Dual SIM: active eSIM & SIM

Fellow XDA Devs:
A capability that a few of us approximated but never fully accomplished was using two Carriers on the Pixel 2 XL (active and passive modes).
Now that the Pixel 3 class is released, does anyone have insight on the feasibility of Active eSIM & Active SIM? That would be such an amazing feather which some much cheaper phones accomplish. I recognize that the Telecom overlords (i.e. Verizon and AT&T) would fight tooth and nail against this capability as the technology would diminish their control).
Thus, it may require playing under the hood and determining if the hardware can support. Appreciate any perspectives or insight you may have

I'd be really surprised (and a little disappointed) if the hardware didn't support active/active, so fingers crossed it happens at some point - or is made to happen by one of the resident geniuses here.... but the box shots I have seen only have one IMEI so who knows?

Unfortunately, no reason to believe the 3 will be any different than the 2 with regards to active dual sim.
Another 'issue' would still be the eSIM can only be used with Project Fi (unless Google changed their mind).

Yes, but imagine Google Fi on the eSIM and the ability to install any other carrier (domestic or ESPECIALLY International) on the nano-SIM. Appreciate the feedback, markd66 and uicnren. Cheers, Herb

Well, you can do that now, you just can't use them concurrently.
Obviously having both active simultaneously is what is desired, but given past history, its not going to happen.

I spoke to the Google Pixel Support and they confirmed that it won't support dual sim.

Ha dual sim? Verizon is not even letting you use the esim in the Pixel 3 XL. At least th 2 XL let you switch between sims. Not true dual but better than nothing. I used the fi for work calls and used the verizon for my personal calls. The sad part is this will not be a major issue so it will be ignored. I will either have to go back to 2 XL or walk with two phones...

Are you saying active/active is blocked or the e-sim. On my pixel 3 xl I can now scan a qr code from any carrier or enter in the code manually to activate e-sim. Unfortunately T-Mobile doesn't do esim yet.

My wife is looking to get a pixel 3 and switch to Fi, and was hoping to use the esim thing to also have her work Verizon # on it. Is that a thing that's even possible?

If she or you are buying through Google, that should be no issue.
eSIM only works on Fi anyway, so you'd then need to get a VZW SIM.

Can confirm, can't buy a VZ phone and use eSim. It is disabled

I believe that you can only use one sim at a time. At least that was my experience with the 2XL. Both sims (e and nano) can be active, but you have to switch service to use. I did this traveling internationally.
As for blocking the sim, I cannot comment since I didn't experience this (Google version).

Pixel 3 supports eSIM with any carrier by scanning QR code provided by the carrier the same way iPhone XS does. There are few carriers supporting QR code eSIM right now, but launch is imminent on iPhone XS for more, and QR codes should work on Pixel 3 too.

How do you use the eSim on the Pixel anyway?

I wanted to bring this thread back to life as I am interested in the potential capabilities regarding active dual sim, but also wanted to clear up a few things.
the eSIM is not locked to project fi
the eSIM is not disabled
Verizon does not support eSIM (yet)
T-Mobile US does not support eSIM (yet)
the eSIM isn't being 'blocked' by anyone.
I want to know if the hardware would somehow allow dual active. I have two of these devices to test on. I don't know where to start

I'm on Project Fi using eSIM and also have a Giffgaff physical SIM installed just as a backup. It's very quick and easy to switch between them. When I first contacted Fi support to set it up I asked if this was feasible and they said definitely. So confirming that setup does work, but not dual active.

I know the Apple 3 watch also uses eSim. I'm just waiting for Apple to put the hammer down on Verizon and demand eSim support. Then we'll have it on the Pixel 3 / XL for other than Fi. I'm figuring early 2019 but we'll see. Even so, this will not be eSim dual active but dual standby. It will be some time before manufactures (major ones) will go dual active. Pixel 4, iPhone XI?

Hopefully this will entice developers to buy the phone and develop more ROMs and kernels for it. $440 is really cheap and to me, it's like a flagship killer all over again.

If you buy this Asian variant, you might be missing out on boosted download speeds in various markets. Will it work, yes. Fastest speeds everywhere, no.

I read on Reddit that the Chinese version works fine on VZW as along as you have them provision it as a "non-CDMA" device on their network. I hope this is accurate because I have two of the 8GB/256GB CN variants in-bound to me in the US and I only use Verizon.

No, the correct provisioning is "CDMA-Less" and you also need to confirm you have "HD Voice" for the phone to work. Wouldn't hurt to also ask them to remove the "LVC-Block" that gets added automatically when they populate your IMEI number (for Video Calling).
The phones WILL technically work as they support the Band 4 subset... but you wont be able to benefit from any of the latest Band 66 coverage that Verizon has been adding over the recent year, most of which is to boost download speeds (B66 is unpaired/asymmetric, with more allocated to downlinks).
Take a look on this page. The Chinese variants are lacking Band 66... so they won't connect to VZW via AWS-3 Blocks G-J or anything on AWS-4.

Bottom line, yes, you will get a connection... you just won't get the best connection.
EDIT: On a good note, unlike any Pixels... you will be able to activate both nano SIMs on Verizon. The 7T, along with the 6T, are one of the few Android DSDS phones that are whitelisted on VZW's "Open Development" platform. After carrying 2 phones around for over 10 years... I now have both lines one one device. Joy!

Yeah, that's cause Band 25 is their backbone... makes sense.

New to one plus phones. I'm on verizon in the US but I'm unsure what phone to purchase. I want the 7t phone at the best price. I'm currently using a ancient galaxy s5 rooted/unlocked. Asked verizon about the oneplus and they wouldn't guarantee that it would work. they Really tried to push Samsung and pixel 4. I just want to ensure the oneplus I purchase will be compatible with verizon. Any input is appreciated. Thanks

No problem, happy to help. I've been on Verizon for 20+ and recently owned the 3 pixel xls.... I ordered the Pixel 4 XL then returned it. Bought the 7T direct from OnePlus and couldn't be happier. Newer tech, less annoyance... plus you save a LOT of $$.
When you get the phone, call VZW and ask for a Tier 2 tech. Then tell them you want add/remove the provisioning I listed in a previous post ^^^.

That's what I was wondering. The other variants seemed cheaper but I questioned it. Not sure what you mean by provisioning. I read the posts but it's all new to me. Also can I get the 7t with 256 or is it just the 8/128.

For the US version, you can only get the 8/128 on that page. There is "technically" a 256 US version that was in the works but the codename never made it out and it didn't go to market. Same as a Gold color for Asian markets...
So to clarify, here's all the 7T variants:
Global / International / Asian / Chinese - missing US bands, available as both 128 and 256 <--- DON'T GET THIS
US T-Mobile - available as 128, locked bootloader <--- DON'T GET THIS
US Unlocked - available as 128, unlocked bootloader <-- YES, GET THIS
Here's some clarification on the provisioning. Simple version is these are the features that are added and/or removed from your account based on your subscription choices and hardware support. Premium Visual Voicemail, for example, costs $2.99 per month. When you choose to add this to your phone, VZW "provisions" your account to add support for the feature. There's also provisioning that's required to support iOS devices... or LTE... or WiFi Calling, etc. So although the 7T has been whitelisted (link) and can be activated on VZW, some of the provisioning isn't automatic and you'll need a quick call to Tier 2 support to get all the phone features working.
Here's the steps. First, if you're moving from an iPhone... there's a small chance things can get hairy when/if you're planning to use Dual SIM (two discrete phone lines). If you are, let me know, I'll add some details. If you don't plan to activate two lines, then here's the easiest path coming from an iPhone:
1) turn off iMessage on your iPhone (very easy, google it).
2) not required... but if you can, it actually makes life easier if you first transfer your line to an old Android LTE device. This can be done online and doesn't cost anything. What this does is push some provisioning to your account that sticks around when you then activate the 7T. If you're already on Android, you can skip these two first steps.
3) then call VZW, ask for a Tier 2 tech to activate the 7T.
4) confirm "CDMA-Less" provisioning has been added.
5) confirm "HD Voice" provisioning has been added.
6) Optional... but you can also ask them to remove the "LVC-Block" provisioning that gets added automatically when they populate your IMEI number (for Video Calling).
All set. The only item that isn't working yet is Premium Visual Voicemail (transcribed to text). Visual Voicemail works. Also, if you know how to do it, you can activate RCS messaging.
I think that's about it... good luck!

You are awsome. Thanks for the info. I'm gun shy on this purchase. I've used galaxy s5 since it came out and know it inside and out. Will the 7t have the options for root/unlocked BL/TWRP and custom roms? Are there any accessories I need for this phone. Sorry about all my questions/apprehension. Think I'm going to do it.

Trust me, sounds like we've both been on the same path... I had the s5 long ago. Yes, this phone can be unlocked and you can install custom roms. Here's the kicker, unlike all of our previous phones, the OnePlus actually grew out of the custom ROM community. Their first phone, the OnePlus One shipped with the Cyanogen OS operating system pre-installed, a commercial variant of CyanogenMod. It's grown up a bit since then... and today it's on OxygenOS, which is pretty much a clean version of Android with some additional features added. Bottom line, this phone feels less-bloated and constricting than ANY of my previous Androids, including the Pixels and Nexus'. Everything is available and Oxygen OS adds some awesome features I've never before seen on a phone.
Once you are up and running, make sure to check these apps out... they'll help to keep you plugged in and backed up when updates go wild:

Quality and fit of both accessories was a HUGE surprise. I've never had such a high grade glass protector that feels like butter... in ALL my years. And the case has a sandstone texture to it that both looks awesome and helps with grip. Everything else is optional... but I also got a second Warp charger/cable (this is a proprietary charging protocol that is way faster than others). Everything else can be purchased elsewhere.

CAUTION!!! Just had my first experience with OnePlus After-sales Support via chat... HORRENDOUS! I was crazy enough to buy 2x of these screen protectors for $59.98 last month. Yesterday, my first cracked so I just opened the second package. I did all the right steps... after installing it, I noticed the top right corner wouldn't stick. Upon inspection, I could see that about 1x1.5cm of the corner was missing the sticker layer that adheres the glass to the phone. I won't walk through my experience step-by-step... but here's some high points. First rep, Lucy Francis, told me that I was supposed to notify them of the defect BEFORE opening the package (wow, that makes a lot of sense!?). She then continued to blame me for the defect and eventually disconnected the chat, dropping my connection. The second rep, Ethan Maximus, went back to the same flawed logic with "As per policy, the defect or damage should be reported within 72 hours of purchase." It took me 15 minutes to walk them through the fact that I bought TWO and that there's no way to discover the second was defective UNTIL IT WAS INSTALLED. Bottom line, considering the exceptional premium you pay for OnePlus accessories, I was expecting at-par support as minimum. This was excruciating!!! The reps are stuck on their scripts and do whatever they can to avoid ANY costs on their end. Never again, neither the phone, nor their accessories. This is easily the worst, most illogical support experience I've had in 15 years. My updated recommendation --> AVOID THEM AT ALL COSTS!

I have read that there is no difference between the China (HydrogenOS) vs the International (OxygenOS) variant, in terms of hardware. Does that mean putting OxygenOS on the Chinese variant will be able to use same network bands as the International variant?

Weird. I've been with Verizon for 2 years now, and always have brought my own device. Esim has not been an issue.

Same here. I actually brought a pixel 6 and pixel 6 pro from Google to Verizon via eSIM, and recommended to do so by support agents when asking for a new sim card. No issues.

Strange indeed ! I'm with T-Mobile.

No problem here, activated mine over the phone with them.
EDIT: Just read through that page and they claim support for S22 series is coming. BS, it works already! Mine has been on esim for nearly two months. I'm thinking this is more of an OFFICIAL support thing meaning if something breaks you're on your own.

Nope...bunch of android phone support esim including Oneplus 11(global version), Pixel, Galaxy etc.

Esim is ok..but if you get a new phone.. that dont offer esim , it kinda sucks. Now you have to go to cell company and transfer esim to a sim card . I had esim on pixel 6 pro

That's not what I posted.
Other brands have but not to the extent of iPhone - where you can juggle many eSim profiles simultaneously, it's why I still use it in addition to Android.
As far as OnePlus 11 I haven't found a single confirmation. Even OnePlus forums state no.

I like the way iPhone handles it. Simultaneously I had capped base plan and added free monthly trials from T-Mobile and Verizon. In settings you can designate which carrier is primary for call&text, which one for Data.
You can store over dozen e-Sim profiles, enable or disable at will...

eSIM in OP11 is.
even the help in the smartphone mentions it and informs you that if you activate the eSIM, the second SIM slot is no longer active.
Simply eSIM replaces SIM2.

BTW - I don't have my traditional SIM card inserted yet, because after the initial "play" with OP11, I will probably reset it to factory settings and root it.

With a physical SIM card I can swap it between any phones however and when I like. With a eSIM card you are a slave to your cellular provider. And good luck restoring your eSIM number if you left your country.

There won't be. OppoPlus has again locked the MSM Tool behind a technician login so the risk of having a brick is unacceptably high. It will be just like all phones since the 9 Pro - little, if any development. Developers are moving away from OnePlus en masse.

I'm going to be moving to the OP11 from OP7T - even though it has eSIM/SIM - does it allow you specify a ringtone for each of the SIMs? This is the reason I moved back to my OP7T from the Pixel 7 Pro, now I have (1) expensive paper-weight sitting on my desk and hoping the OnePlus 11 will have this option like my OnePlus 7T.

I'm about to set up a new OP11 but I don't want to use eSIM. I'd rather have two physical SIMs. When you start setup I don't see an option to disable eSIM. I don't want to insert my SIM to learn, that I won't be able to go back or cancel this operation. What do I do?

Question Does Oneplus 11 work on AT&T?

Title says it all. I remember reading in the past that there was some issue with their phones working on AT&T.

The OnePlus 11 is fully certified to work on AT&T, including 5G. Only thing you won't have is mmwave as the 11 doesn't have mmwave.

OP 11 works on all major US carriers it's on the OP website.

Yes it will work. Unfortunately WIFI calling won't.

Are you saying if I use Google Voice wifi calling it won't work or are you saying that 'native' wifi calling won't work?

I'm using a OnePlus 7T on AT&T and ATT Support had to enable Wifi Calling on my account, it works w/o any problem and should still work when my OnePlus 11 arrives.

No. ATT Support just had to enable it on my device (OP 7T).

AT&T is pretty hit or miss with OPlus in my experience. They forced me out of their network when I had a OnePlus 7 Pro. Told me to upgrade, gave me the 3G network nonsense. Bought the 10 Pro, called support, they enabled all the switches on their side... two weeks later they cut my service completely right after a billing cycle and I couldn't text, call, and didn't have data. They kept telling me **** like my phone wasn't certified or something for their network, a brand new device bought from best buy, lol. The gall.
For OPlus I would use T-Mobile, as that's their "licensed" vendor so even global, EU, or CN Oppo devices seem to work fine. But that's just my personal experience last year, perhaps others are different.

That used to be the case but not since the 10T. OnePlus is now officially certified for AT&T network (but only the 10T and 11). In the past though, it wasn't certified and AT&T loved to kick people off for using a non-certified phone. As far as T-Mobile though, yeah OnePlus devices fully work on their network without any nonsense. They also fully work on Verizon without any nonsense too.

The phone works EXCEPT that the Hotspot does not start. I have a oneplus 7 pro that has no problem starting the hotspot with the same sim.
