Spen vs wireless phone charger - Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ Questions & Answers

Hi,
I have a question about whether wireless phone charging affects spen. From about March to November, it happened to me twice that the phone said spen disconnected. After inserting it a few times, it connected again and worked. It's been happening every day for the past month, and for the past week it's been constant and won't connect. I read something about magnets in the discussions, but the phone did not come into contact with anything like that. The only thing I can think of is that for about the last year, the phone has only been charged wirelessly, by leaving it on the charger overnight. The charger is not original Samsung. Is it possible that the spen broke due to the charger? I got a new one today, it works perfectly again and I would hate to destroy it again. What is your opinion?
Please excuse my English, I'm using a translator

Interesting. Spen's seldom fail unless physically damaged. Sometimes they can be hard to get to initialize especially if not used for weeks. Eventually they will initialize though, the first indication is they show as charging. The old spen may still be good... just being stubborn.
Best to use Samsung chargers. The wireless charger shouldn't effect the spen if not actively charging. The Spen has it's own charging coil built into the phone. However not sure if the spen is shielded from outside RF. Unless the external wireless charger gives the spen a substantial over voltage if it can even charge it, it wouldn't harm it. The spen uses a super capacitor for it's battery and can't be overcharged. Over voltage may kill it. This is a question for Samsung engineers... good luck with that.
Spen's and magnets don't get along but a permanent magnet exposure shouldn't cause any permanent damage.

thanks for the reply
it's just my guess, because otherwise the spen was always fine and I don't know what else the phone would come into contact with.
Girlfriend still has my old Note9 and spen is still no problem and she basically doesn't even use it.
He is not physically damaged in any way. Over time, it just started to get worse.
The last two weeks or so, he was almost unable to connect. Rather, he was still disconnected. When I managed to connect it after a long trial, in the settings it showed charging from approx. 60% to 100% and for a very long time. Sometimes it even managed to charge, if it hadn't lost the connection by then.
When it was working, the battery dropped from 100 to 80 immediately after pulling it out, and then it wouldn't connect again after inserting it.
At least I'm glad it was spen and not something inside the phone

You're welcome.
Could be the spen failed electronically which is very rare unless damaged. Guess if the new one fails you'll have the probable cause.
Wired charging puts less strain on the battery and is faster... so you may want to consider using that instead. The C port is generally very robust and is good for many thousands of use cycles. In the N10+ it's fairly easy to replace and is an inexpensive part. So don't sweat it... enjoy your N10+, it's Samsung's best phone to date!
Just a joy to use and very capable.

Charging Issue

Hi guys,
i have some issues with charging my inc2.
it is not accepting any charge anymore, tried diffrent chargers, cables, even on my pc but nothing. The orange charging LED just flashes slowly on and off...
Any ideas?
Need to replace phone or replace charging port.

Yes, unfortunately it is a known hardware issue. Over time, the charging port starts coming loose. Like mentioned above, you CAN fix it yourself. There are video tutorials on YouTube and the replacement part can be had for under $10. If your device is still under warranty, Verizon will replace the phone. If it's not under warranty (or if you just want to give it a go), the port replacement process is pretty straightforward.
I might give it a try. Does anybody have a video or a link?
The weird thing is, that the battery is discharging very fast, could it be just a bad battery?

Could b the back door on your inc 2. I believe you need the back door on to charge cuz it goes thru contacts on the back. I dropped mine one day and charging and getting signal was almost impossible till I figured that out and bought a new one
Ok.
Seems to charge now. Won't touch it until it is full. After that I will check what is going on.
I don't know where this issue came from.never dropped it nothing. It was even in a Otterbox

The issue stems from regular use. The charging port is essentially held in place only by the connections to the board. Repeatedly plugging and unplugging the power cable causes it to break over time.
actually just replaced the charger port on my incredible 2 today. It really wasn't that difficult at all. If you have any questions feel free to PM me
yeah it has to be replaced. happened to me last month. It's honestly like the worst flaw with this phone

Def need to replace it. Same issues I was having at one point with it randomly taking charge. I found that if the charger is plugged in a held a certain level ( i placed the phone on a flat surface with a book under the cord for leverage) it would charge just fine.
If you are rooted and sending back, make sure you revert to stock to avoid any annoyances.
I've managed to solve this issue without messing around with the phone's innards (the last time I did it was a disaster and I was forced to buy an entirely new phone). It's not pretty, but if you twist a rubber band around the micro usb end of your charger, plug your phone in, twist that same rubber band around the phone itself, and make sure the connection very tight, you might get some more life out of your charger port.
Ugh. I can't wait for my upgrade.
Nice name there Dave.

While, I give you major kudos points for MacGuyver-ing a solution, that's more of a quick band-aid than a real fix. I could imagine having a rubber band around the phone could potentially hinder usage.
But hey, way to think outside the box! :good:

Thank you. You're telling me. Do you know how hard it is to use a touch screen with a rubber band across it? Oy.
Right. The caveat here, of course, is that this technique will only help charge your phone until the charging port becomes so disconnected from the board that no amount of force will reestablish this contact. And this will inevitably happen because you're going to keep plugging and unplugging your phone from the charger which is what created the issue in the first place.
If you know you have big, sweaty, idiot hands (like me) that are going to destroy your phone if you take it apart (like me) and you can tough it out: more power to you. The other alternative is to buy an external battery charger and a second battery. The disadvantages here are pretty obvious (e.g. you have to carry a second battery around; if you forget a second battery, you can't ask another Android user to borrow their phone charger, etc.).

Note 3 powering off by itself

Hello, I would like to start off by saying I'm new here AND in Android culture. I was an iPhone user, but decided to swith to something different. Since I live in Europe (in Lithuania, to be exact) I figured that it wouldn't mean anything here if I bough a blacklisted T-mobile Note 3 4G LTE phone. Now to the main point - I got the phone yesterday and noticed something suspicious. Firstly, it came with aftermarket charger and usb cable (not usb 3.0, just a simple micro-usb to usb 2.0). My first problem is that when I am charging Note while it's on, it almost doesn't charge at all. Only when I turn off the phone I can expect the phone to charge to 80-90 percent in 8 HOURS! That's insane! Needless to say, I WILL be getting original samsung charger... Now other complaint is that the area around camera gets hot even when changing settings. Not really sure what causes that, so I did 4 factory resets yesterday.... Today it gets warm, but nothing suspicous. Disabled KNOX and other crappy programs. Not sure if it's the chargers fault, but battery life sucks. Phone drains the battery like crazy, the percentage drops about 1 in minute or so. When I use the power saving, reduce the brightness, use airplane mode, it's better, but even If i charge it and use my phone at the same time, the battery percentage still keeps going down
Now, the biggest wtf moment is when the phone is not plugged to charge, if i press the sleep button, the display turns black and after a few second the phone shuts itself off. No sounds, no vibration or notifications, it just silently goes to sleep. I can only turn it on again. I could even successfuly unlock the phone to use with a sim card, the phone is also making fun of me! Not really sure what's happening with my note that i bought off ebay and spent quite the amount of money, but I am starting to get into depression...
Please, if anyone has ANY idea what the hell is happening (apart the stupid charger), i would really appreciate any answers. And sorry for the long post and my english, as it is not my native language!

Could be a counterfeit - Check the serial with Samsung and make sure it has all the crazy samsung sensor, the counterfeits usually don't
Make sure the power button isn't sticking, I had an iphone 4s that did the same thing and it was due to power button hardware problem.
For the charger just get a cheap one off ebay with the right power ratings(find them for your country on samsung.com) and I find Toshiba sells replacement USB3 cables for their hard drives really cheap - That can save you 30$
Blacklisted IMEI phones are a gamble, if you can prove it's a counterfeit then ebay should refund you but it might also be a phone some bad man/woman/other stole and might have been abused. If it's the latter then that's a shame that he ended up stealing from two people...

Thank you for your answer
Well, the power button isn't sticking, I can clearly feel and heal it click when I am pressing it. The IMEI under the battery matches the IMEI in android system settings. I checked my IMEI on swappa and it says that phone was reported stolen (yay..). On imei.info site it says a different model (n9005 instead of n900t), but whatever.
Thank you for the info about toshiba usb 3.0 cables, might as well buy one right away
To be honest, I feel like it's a faulty item (even though seller assured my that the phone is working like new and that he replaced the battery). The battery life, as I said, is terrible, it doesn't hold a charge, the vibration motor seems very cheap (it's too strong, it sounds very strange), speaker seems to be not-ok too (distorted sound not even on full volume), screen-capture with palm doesn't even seem to work properly, I can't choose various music eq's (it says that this eq is not supported with speaker), I can't get my sim to work with this phone. Well, according to the ebay ad, phone should be working properly without any problems. The fact that the battery or charging mechanism sucks determined that was a lie...
Now I'm wondering if this info would be enough for paypal to refund me, because the phone is almost unsable (with self shutting of while it's not charging) and sad battery life...
Sorry for double post, but I noticed something very strange...
Well, turns out, that when the airplane mode is off, the phone gets very hot around the camera and battery is draining like mad. BUT, when I turn on the airplane mode, note cools off, battery still keeps draining, but it seems that not as much... Anyways, is it possible that the cellular module or something like that could be a cause of all my problems? (and to keep in mind that I haven't been able to use any sim with it, as it keeps saying "searching")
Sim won't work unless it's unlocked.
My suggestions are to:
1. Stock restore and then root the device.
2. Just sign in to phone using WiFi and download chain fires region lock away. Roughly $3 US.
3. Then try out Sim card, see if you can get signal.
If you can get that far, it will tell us what other kind of problems the phone is having on its own. Sounds to me at the moment it is trying very hard to find the signal and causing battery drain issues. The random shut downs could be due to the phone over heading and shutting down as a fail safe.

I did everything exactly as mentioned in the thread that you've posted the link to. First of all, booting logo changed, then my phone became unlocked (when I inserted the SIM, it didn't ask for unlock code). However, even with apn settings, it still says "searching" and gets quite hot in the upper-left side of the phone (when screen is facing towards me). I was really hoping this would help, but it didn't do much, as it seems... Anyways, I appreciate your good deed trying to help me I'm really desperate to make this phone work with my phone, but can't seem to manage to do that, which is very sad...

power/charging issue

ive been having a problem with this phone for a while. it has a problem with turning on and statying on. i will set it on charge while its powered off for atleast two hours, but as soon as i turn it on it will last for about 5 mins and turn off.
i first replaced the battery and it has the same problem. so i replaced the charging port and it was working fine for a few weeks and now its back to the same issue. i cant even get it to charge now
so just trying to figure out what kind of other components it could be
Disclaimer: You're at a more advanced level than I am. I've never done phone repair, and I don't know enough about phone hardware to say if there are other components that could be responsible. I'm a software guy.
That being said, I'll chime in with what I do know, on the off chance that it's actually helpful.
When computers get too hot, they do an automatic thermal shutdown to try to prevent permanent damage. I assume smartphones do this as well. You're on XDA, so there's a good chance you like to tinker. Did you overclock the phone? Overclocking generates more heat, which could potentially lead to a thermal shutdown or permanent damage. Or you might be using or storing the phone in a hot environment.
Have you tried using a different charging cable? Maybe the cable or its connector went bad. You could also test the cable with a different device. Maybe the wall outlet, etc went bad. Did you check the connectors that the battery attaches to, to make sure they're clean?
When you opened the phone to replace the charging port, maybe you didn't put it together quite right, so over time something came loose or got pinched. Desktops and laptops use various types of adhesives such as thermal paste, and computer technicians have to remember to reapply new adhesive when putting a machine back together. Maybe phones use some adhesive too, and maybe you forgot to reapply it?
Hopefully someone more knowledgeable about phone hardware will chime in, but the Incredible 2 section of these forums has been a ghost town lately. That's why I'm giving my two cents. If it were me, I'd just buy a new phone.

well i greatly appreciate your lengthly response. to be honest, it is my mothers phone, which is why i want to try and fix it. i gave her an iphone so she really doesnt need this phone but i would like to figure out what is wrong because i do like to tinker with things. i have tried different chords, wall outlets, usb ports on the pc etc. i will reopen the phone to see if everything is back together, because thats the only thing i can think of from what you mentioned.
thanks again. if anyone has had a similar problem, let me know
sounds like you're either having a battery issue or need to replace your charge port on your phone. its a really simple process all you do is order the port from like amazon or ebay and the old one on your phone just unplugs from your phone circuit board there actually is a tutorial forum in the development page for the droid incredible 2 that gives you instructions on how to do this. hope this was of some help to you and if so please click thanks.

The OP already tried both of those things.
Oh ok yeah i just noticed where he put that. Hardware problem maybe. Im more into software myself than i am hardware.
MINE TOO! Omg
This... it's too much. Okay, a month ago the damned power button got too hard to press in, which should have been a warning that the hardware was getting faulty I suppose. But I downloaded an app that let me use the volume button to turn screen on/off. (I won't say which because I half-blame it, unfairly, for killing my phone
(Sorry, I'm still —mourning! the death of my phone I guess.)
The app was an ugly solution, I guess, but it worked. (I couldn't turn the screen off easily, so I set the screen-off to 10 seconds.) And I hadn't used screenshots in a while so that was no big deal; and my ROM could get me to Recovery easily enough, so screw the power button, right?
But then last night, my phone STOPPED CHARGING! I did a batt pull, tried new cords; turned off every useful app. I even went back to stock ROM, which (even though plugged in) left me with 20% batt. Might as well have bricked it, I guess.
Nothing worked. I was able to turn bluetooth back on so I could use my Air Droid acct to get my on-phone pictures, at least (everything else is safe on the SD), and then I charged it overnight in the wall and hoped for the best.
I was pretty thrilled to wake up to 100% charged! —For a few minutes. As soon as I unplugged it, it started discharging fast, and then not even the wall charger stopped it from discharging.
After brooding, for a few hours, I called Verizon tech. The tech (VERY nice, admittedly) said my Dinc2 was just dead. (Damn they're good: he was more sympathetic than a doctor delivering bad news!!) —But I feel so lost. He offered me a DNA or a Dinc 4G (and some motos and crap), but said my Dinc2 wouldn't be worth fixing. He said the power button alone was a PITA, but the dongle thing you plug the charger into was likely the problem, AND it might be the battery. Maybe he said other problems, but ultimately he suggested some pre-owneds he had for sale (I'm trying to keep my unlimited data plan), or try PhoneKarma.com. (He said he didn't recommend eBay, where they have Dinc 2s, but I'm not sure why.)
So ...do Dinc2s just have power issues after (?) 3 years? I guess that's a pretty good lifetime, but boy is it depressing. (I know — hooked on a damned phone. #Sucks.) I mean, it would be stupid to fix this one, or buy another one, right?
@Trebuchette, no matter what machine you use, rechargeable batteries do not last forever. Order a new battery from Amazon or eBay and you should be fine. They're pretty cheap and easy to replace. http://www.amazon.com/HTC-Incredible-6350-BTR6350B-Packaging/dp/B0064SI3QA
A case might make your power button easier to press. The OtterBox Defender is an excellent case that you can get for $15 used (very good condition), if a new battery successfully fixes your problem.
Hey: might be worth a shot! I did try another batt, but it was older too. And I didn't think of an otterbox at all, tbh. Thanks! Might be worth a try!
Hey: does it matter much if my USB cable is LG or whatever? I tried several different USBs too, but I'd been using this LG one (no idea how!) for probably about a year.
No, the brand of micro USB cable should not matter. It's a technical standard.
Don't buy a case until you've verified that a new battery actually fixes your problem. If a battery doesn't fix it, it's only a few bucks lost. In that case, I would then get a new phone.
i just came back to this thread after i basically put the project on hold for a while and wanted to see any new suggestions. so after leaving the phone alone for two months, i pluuged the phone in and i saw that orange ligh indicating it was charging. so far so good, im not using it as a primary phone which is good, but that would be my suggestion is to give the phone a rest for a while
EDIT: yeah scratch that, its doing the same **** now

Save Note 7 from exploding, untill replace

Save Note7 from potential exploding!
1. "Inportant" Disable fast charging under battery settings ( there is toggle to turn off)
2. Use OEM wall charger with OEM cable
3. Before charging phone close all active aplications and clear cashe
4. Before charging turn off wifi, bluetoth, nfc etc..
5.DO NOT CHARGE phone ubder pillow or in bad
Hope this tips help you guys and me
Perhaps we should also all be taking acupuncture and subscribing to new age homeopathy therapies? :silly:
If the battery wants to 'go bang' it will, no options will change that fact.
i'll just take my chances ?

It doesn't, otherwise we would have been advised to turn it off by Samsung before the handset is replaced. Or a software update disabling the feature would have been pushed.

Samsung didn't say a word what to do untill replace, but if you read about fast charging, there says " your device will charge quickly but may become hot"
It's got nothing to do with fast charging, it's a fault in the battery that will heat up and catch fire if you're fast charging or not....

I think a lot of people are concluding that heat is the issue and will create the battery problem. I can't see any evidence that heat causes the battery fault to occur.
Well exploding battery will cause heat.... sooo XD... There probably many other component that cause it but anyone willing to force the note7"C4" to explode?
its a battery fault - the battery cells which are affecting the units are drawing too much power from the mains which in turn heats the battery past limit. i've had mine for about 4 days in the UK and three have told me "no recall or safety instructions have been given by company"
and samsung support have said "none of the problems has occured in the UK so you are fine to use and if it gets hot close all apps and place phone in cool place away from direct sunlight"
but samsung did say they were replacing phones. left details and call back will be in 7days
was on hold for 1 hour waiting for them to answer. might be quicker popping into a samsung store and asking about it.
but if people in UK need a piece of mind and wants to ring samsung the phone number to use is 0330 726 1000 *****THIS IS FOR UK RESIDENTS ONLY*****

I got a phone call from O2 earlier offering me to return the phone for a full refund or a partial refund with a different handset.
the option they didn't advise was to hold onto the phone and they will replace them when they get the new stock, they said this has been the most popular option with the majority of people opting for it, but they also said should the phone show any signs of the problem (getting hot when charging or swelling) I can take the phone in at any time for a refund.
chances are 3 just doesn't have all the info yet, but the recall is every phone, Samsung is probably still communicating with suppliers so it is likely a case of the firms are still learning then they will have to work out how to pass on the information to those affected.
I would have to say it's fast charging...or generic adapters. Because I used the original cable with a generic adapter and after charging for some time, the phone was extremely hot. As in ive never felt any phone become that hot. This was maybe in the first few days I got the phone. I saw fast charging was on so I turned that off.
I stopped using that particular adapter as well (which works for all our other Samsung and apple phones and pads) ... And it never became hot again.
I use another non branded adapter with a non Samsung cable in the office to charge and it doesn't get hot there. Doesn't get hot with my non branded car charger as well.
So my guess is it's the fast charging option. Or just that particular adapter. But so far... Fast charging off... With different adapters and cables.. And it's working fine.. And cool
the problem is 100% in the battery, nothing else in the phone is at fault.
basically when they make a battery it is done with layers of material and a catalyst (acid or similar) inside the battery is compartmented, if 2 of these compartments manage to interact with each other due to a fault in the separator you get a runaway reaction, at best you get a bit swelling or a hot battery, worst case it goes critical and fails (goes pop)
if you have a phone with a faulty battery you can play it safe and turn off options such as fast charging, but the fact is if the battery is one of the few faulty batteries in the wild you are only delaying the inevitable.
the only way to protect the phone is to monitor it carefully while it is charging as if the battery is faulty no amount of changing settings will solve the problem as if that was the case they would have released emergency firmwares by now to minimise risk.
but even then when the phone gets warm it isn't always the battery, my battery normally sits around 30-35C (even while charging) but my phone sometimes feels warm but the problem is the CPU running some times at 50-60C making the phone feel warm and not the actual battery.

Question Z Fold 3 'Too Cold To Charge' after water damage

Okay, hello XDA Forums peoples! Ive been lurking here for like a decade. I feel bad for bothering you nice people, but now I'm at my wits end with this phone.
Okay, so, long story short:
Z Fold 3, let it run the One U.I. 4 update, bricked the whole phone, wouldnt come back on. This happens a week away from being out of warranty. So i get samsung to agree to let Asurion/uBreakiFix repair it (I almost always fix my own electronics, I hate Asurion, I've had problems dealing with them before, but its free so whatever). Well they get it working, i asked what they did and they were basically like 'uhhh idk'. I assume it was just an 'unplug the battery and plug it back in' kind of thing.
Anyways fast forward to a couple months ago. Im walking along the creek, i always keep my phone in my backpack for safety. Zipper on my backpack comes open some, phone falls out and directly into the water for about 3-5 seconds. Goes black within 15 minutes. Alright, so it seems like maybe the boys who worked on this didnt seal it back properly. Whatever.
I let it dry for about 4 or 5 days. Comes back on, everything works except the front screen's digitizer(which is cool for me, because the inside screen still works fine) and its reporting too cold to charge, so now once the battery runs out i have a new foldable brick! Yay! I check the battery temperature thats reported in settings and its completely fine. I hit it with a hair dryer for like 5 minutes to try and trip the thermometer, and nothing happens.
I tried some cheap shots in the dark, i replace the USB charging board, i replace the wireless charging coil, both of which have thermistors on other older samsung phones, so i figured it was a decent guess. Still too cold to charge.
So I find a schematic, or not exactly a schematic, but like a boardview, i guess. So at least i know where the thermistors are to check them. Theres about 10 thermistors on the main and sub boards. 5 of which are covered by metal shielding which i am just terrified of trying to remove, mainly because i havent done it before. So i check the other half.
The thermistors used in these phones are like inverse, so they have less resistance for higher temps and more resistance for lower temps. If one of them is dead, it will have like "maximum resistance", right? Which would report the coldest possible temperature, right? So that all makes sense, to me at least.
The 5 i can get to with my meter to check, they seem to work completely fine. From what research ive done they seem to be like 100k resistors when measured at ~70 degrees f, and i can watch the resistance go up and down when its cooled or heated past that temperature. Okay, perfect. That all checks out.
Because the other ones are under some metal shielding, i assume theyre most likely fine because any water would have a harder time getting in there. So i skip to the most expensive option so far: i buy two replacement batteries. The schematics do not include the battery, so i dont know where the thermistors are on my current batteries to check them, if that was the problem.
Well, batteries came yesterday, i pop them in, still too cold to charge. I've already ran the phone dead checking it, so i cant do any further diagnostics with the phone on. And now the most i get is a Yield sign with a thermometer in it when i plug it in.
Okay, so... Idk?? This problem is starting to get over my head. What do y'all think? It seems like my options are becoming more limited and expensive.
I can try and put a big blob of solder on the top of the shielding and pull it off to check the remaining thermistors, which seems to be how people remove those things. I also have have hot air at my disposal, which is always risky with tiny things because too high airspeed might blow components away on the board and then i'll probably cry.
It could just be a connector somewhere on some flex cable? Maybe? I mean like maybe what if one of them is for reporting temperature, and water corrosion is stopping it from sending a signal through???
Im fine with doing whatever, but i just want a charged battery first so i can recover my data before i do anything that drastic. I mean, back in the day they had 4 big pads on a removable battery. You could buy a universal samsung battery charger or rig a USB cable to charge it, but I have literally no idea what to do here. Does anyone know of some specialized battery charger that will connect to these flex cables?? That would be a gigantic help right now. Or if i knew where to get a Z Fold 3 just to pop it open and charge my battery with? Or maybe just sit there for 2 hours holding two wires to the positive and negative pins?!??!?? I dont know. Someone throw ideas at me, please!
Might be worth buying a bench power supply and either injecting voltage through the phone or connecting it to the cells to trickle charge them back up? Im not an expert it these just throwing ideas
