ive been having a problem with this phone for a while. it has a problem with turning on and statying on. i will set it on charge while its powered off for atleast two hours, but as soon as i turn it on it will last for about 5 mins and turn off.
i first replaced the battery and it has the same problem. so i replaced the charging port and it was working fine for a few weeks and now its back to the same issue. i cant even get it to charge now
so just trying to figure out what kind of other components it could be

That being said, I'll chime in with what I do know, on the off chance that it's actually helpful.
When computers get too hot, they do an automatic thermal shutdown to try to prevent permanent damage. I assume smartphones do this as well. You're on XDA, so there's a good chance you like to tinker. Did you overclock the phone? Overclocking generates more heat, which could potentially lead to a thermal shutdown or permanent damage. Or you might be using or storing the phone in a hot environment.
Have you tried using a different charging cable? Maybe the cable or its connector went bad. You could also test the cable with a different device. Maybe the wall outlet, etc went bad. Did you check the connectors that the battery attaches to, to make sure they're clean?
When you opened the phone to replace the charging port, maybe you didn't put it together quite right, so over time something came loose or got pinched. Desktops and laptops use various types of adhesives such as thermal paste, and computer technicians have to remember to reapply new adhesive when putting a machine back together. Maybe phones use some adhesive too, and maybe you forgot to reapply it?
Hopefully someone more knowledgeable about phone hardware will chime in, but the Incredible 2 section of these forums has been a ghost town lately. That's why I'm giving my two cents. If it were me, I'd just buy a new phone.

well i greatly appreciate your lengthly response. to be honest, it is my mothers phone, which is why i want to try and fix it. i gave her an iphone so she really doesnt need this phone but i would like to figure out what is wrong because i do like to tinker with things. i have tried different chords, wall outlets, usb ports on the pc etc. i will reopen the phone to see if everything is back together, because thats the only thing i can think of from what you mentioned.

sounds like you're either having a battery issue or need to replace your charge port on your phone. its a really simple process all you do is order the port from like amazon or ebay and the old one on your phone just unplugs from your phone circuit board there actually is a tutorial forum in the development page for the droid incredible 2 that gives you instructions on how to do this. hope this was of some help to you and if so please click thanks.

This... it's too much. Okay, a month ago the damned power button got too hard to press in, which should have been a warning that the hardware was getting faulty I suppose. But I downloaded an app that let me use the volume button to turn screen on/off. (I won't say which because I half-blame it, unfairly, for killing my phone
(Sorry, I'm still —mourning! the death of my phone I guess.)
The app was an ugly solution, I guess, but it worked. (I couldn't turn the screen off easily, so I set the screen-off to 10 seconds.) And I hadn't used screenshots in a while so that was no big deal; and my ROM could get me to Recovery easily enough, so screw the power button, right?
But then last night, my phone STOPPED CHARGING! I did a batt pull, tried new cords; turned off every useful app. I even went back to stock ROM, which (even though plugged in) left me with 20% batt. Might as well have bricked it, I guess.
Nothing worked. I was able to turn bluetooth back on so I could use my Air Droid acct to get my on-phone pictures, at least (everything else is safe on the SD), and then I charged it overnight in the wall and hoped for the best.
I was pretty thrilled to wake up to 100% charged! —For a few minutes. As soon as I unplugged it, it started discharging fast, and then not even the wall charger stopped it from discharging.
After brooding, for a few hours, I called Verizon tech. The tech (VERY nice, admittedly) said my Dinc2 was just dead. (Damn they're good: he was more sympathetic than a doctor delivering bad news!!) —But I feel so lost. He offered me a DNA or a Dinc 4G (and some motos and crap), but said my Dinc2 wouldn't be worth fixing. He said the power button alone was a PITA, but the dongle thing you plug the charger into was likely the problem, AND it might be the battery. Maybe he said other problems, but ultimately he suggested some pre-owneds he had for sale (I'm trying to keep my unlimited data plan), or try PhoneKarma.com. (He said he didn't recommend eBay, where they have Dinc 2s, but I'm not sure why.)
So ...do Dinc2s just have power issues after (?) 3 years? I guess that's a pretty good lifetime, but boy is it depressing. (I know — hooked on a damned phone. #Sucks.) I mean, it would be stupid to fix this one, or buy another one, right?

A case might make your power button easier to press. The OtterBox Defender is an excellent case that you can get for $15 used (very good condition), if a new battery successfully fixes your problem.

No, the brand of micro USB cable should not matter. It's a technical standard.
Don't buy a case until you've verified that a new battery actually fixes your problem. If a battery doesn't fix it, it's only a few bucks lost. In that case, I would then get a new phone.
i just came back to this thread after i basically put the project on hold for a while and wanted to see any new suggestions. so after leaving the phone alone for two months, i pluuged the phone in and i saw that orange ligh indicating it was charging. so far so good, im not using it as a primary phone which is good, but that would be my suggestion is to give the phone a rest for a while

Hey guys-- got back from the t-mobile store and they told me the data port is dead (from water damage). It turns on with a fresh battery fine, but apparently I'm getting an error code. That code is probably that the data port is messed up because I can't charge my battery. I'm assuming I have to replace it. Does anyone know of a video tutorial or something that will show me how to do it?

the chances of the data port being physically damaged by water is very slim- I think they are trying to tell you the circuitry is faulty. If you had ripped the charger out and bent or broke the port, then I could see it- but water cannot bend or break that way and corrosion is unlikely unless its been sitting a while.
Back to the original subject though, I just replaced a faulty USB port on my friends Moto Q. It wasnt bad, but you need a very small pencil iron (I use a station) and good eyes, otherwise you will bridge the tiny connections and be fubar'd.

find a bricked one on ebay or something..or someone selling one with a cracked screen etc...use it for parts
welp, i've never soldered... guess you gotta learn sometime. ports are bout 25 bucks... Guess I have a new hobby. Or maybe I should just buy an external battery charger... soldering sounds more fun though. Yeah, what i meant by getting an error code is when i plug in the charging cord into the cell phone, I get a red light instead of yellow/orange. But, I have to push up on the cable where i insert it into the port to get anything. So, its not dead, but either dying or drunk....... drunk from oil.... which it swam in... and got sick from. vegetable oil, not motor oil... which would be a waste of oil. Anyways, thanks for the replies and if you stumble upon a vid for the dash, please post it. I found some on blackberries, but not an excaliber.

I could just always link from here; but anyway, I received a new battery that I ordered before the geniouses at t-mobile told me that a red light is an error code, my old battery is perfectly fine, my data port is broken, and no... a new battery won't fix it. *** what's my point you ask?***
They don't know jack fecal matter. I just popped in the new battery and 1) my phone turned on, 2) my charging light turned orange, 3) my plug doesn't need adjusting to charge the phone, and just now 4) my phone has signaled to my through a pretty green light that the new battery just finished charging.
So, to recap, the guys at t-mobile said my port was fried and that all my problems were due to that. My theory was that oil (and come to find out water) damage caused the battery to malfunction and thereby refused to allow a current to charge it resulting in the errors. Turns out, I was right.
Thanks speed and all for your replies. If I need a cheap miniusb port in the future, I now have a good source. Now, Anyone know if a new lcd will fix the splotchy marks on my screen (look like dark puddle spots). I'll post a pic in a new post in a minute.
Yah you can grab a new LCD off ebay (fairly cheap) and then go to youtube and youtube "fix dash screen" and there is a tutorial on there that will guide you on replacing your screen.
just make sure its the lcd thats the problem- the outer clear part that you can touch is separate, and comes with the case. Mine are scratched to hell on both my Dash's but I refuse to buy new cases to fix them

I don't know what to think of this thing anymore. This morning it wouldn't turn on, even though I had the green light on the device as it was plugged in all night. So, I kept fiddling with it hoping it would turn on so I could have ATT do a remote hard reset. Well... it wouldn't cooperate. So, I left it alone. Then this evening I was about ready to bury it and I tried the power button one last time and it turned on. But, the battery was really low and I got the red light again when I plugged it in. I guess the battery got a bit of a charge in itself just sitting there. So, perhaps the t-mobile guys do know what they're talking about. Well... i did actually get the orange light while it was on for that sweet minute, which should mean its charging, but I guess its not actually charging the battery. I suppose the last way to go is external charger. I'll probably pick one up off ebay for 15 bucks.

Yes, unfortunately it is a known hardware issue. Over time, the charging port starts coming loose. Like mentioned above, you CAN fix it yourself. There are video tutorials on YouTube and the replacement part can be had for under $10. If your device is still under warranty, Verizon will replace the phone. If it's not under warranty (or if you just want to give it a go), the port replacement process is pretty straightforward.
I might give it a try. Does anybody have a video or a link?
The weird thing is, that the battery is discharging very fast, could it be just a bad battery?

Could b the back door on your inc 2. I believe you need the back door on to charge cuz it goes thru contacts on the back. I dropped mine one day and charging and getting signal was almost impossible till I figured that out and bought a new one

The issue stems from regular use. The charging port is essentially held in place only by the connections to the board. Repeatedly plugging and unplugging the power cable causes it to break over time.

Def need to replace it. Same issues I was having at one point with it randomly taking charge. I found that if the charger is plugged in a held a certain level ( i placed the phone on a flat surface with a book under the cord for leverage) it would charge just fine.
If you are rooted and sending back, make sure you revert to stock to avoid any annoyances.
I've managed to solve this issue without messing around with the phone's innards (the last time I did it was a disaster and I was forced to buy an entirely new phone). It's not pretty, but if you twist a rubber band around the micro usb end of your charger, plug your phone in, twist that same rubber band around the phone itself, and make sure the connection very tight, you might get some more life out of your charger port.
Ugh. I can't wait for my upgrade.

While, I give you major kudos points for MacGuyver-ing a solution, that's more of a quick band-aid than a real fix. I could imagine having a rubber band around the phone could potentially hinder usage.

Thank you. You're telling me. Do you know how hard it is to use a touch screen with a rubber band across it? Oy.
Right. The caveat here, of course, is that this technique will only help charge your phone until the charging port becomes so disconnected from the board that no amount of force will reestablish this contact. And this will inevitably happen because you're going to keep plugging and unplugging your phone from the charger which is what created the issue in the first place.
If you know you have big, sweaty, idiot hands (like me) that are going to destroy your phone if you take it apart (like me) and you can tough it out: more power to you. The other alternative is to buy an external battery charger and a second battery. The disadvantages here are pretty obvious (e.g. you have to carry a second battery around; if you forget a second battery, you can't ask another Android user to borrow their phone charger, etc.).
A while back i used to "try" to root stuff. I sucked at it BAD. Anyway, I have a Galaxy Note 8.0 (GT-N5110) that I had rooted to a certain point (very superficial) and I just kept it the way it was, that way I could use Multi-window for any app. This morning I unplug my tab from the charger only to be disappointed that it will not turn on. Ive tried different power outlets, different cables, different base chargers, even the whole "power+vol_up+home" thing... nothing. I never updated the tab when Kitkat came through the pipeline. Im freaking out that a new major update automatically happened overnight or something. Im sorry to trouble you all, but does anyone have suggestions? Since it's rooted I can't take it to Samsung or Best Buy. Honestly if I could just get it back to stock, that would be awesome, but im more concerned about getting it to simply turn on. Any Ideas?
If your device is rooted you won't get an OTA update so that could not be the problem. You can try to unplug battery (mus open the device)"and see what happened. Maybe your battery is faulty or someting else.
K... I appreciate it Ill take a look. But, lets say I actually open it (without making things worse), how do I determine if the battery is in fact faulty? If it is, can I get a replacement? preferably an official samsung one.

The problem with this device is you cannot pull out the battery easily. Maybe after that steps it boots up again.
Battery removal wasn't bad... now I'm just waiting for a new one (ordered on ebay, crossing fingers hoping it was legit). What did you mean "after that steps it boots up agin."? Will the tablet boot up without the battery if it's plugged in or something?

Wow, that suck. sorry for you man. For now, try to plug the tablet to a computer and while device manager opened and see if there is change. If the change say "qhsusb" or something along that line and not your model number . . . changing battery wont do anything because it's already hard bricked. if not, finger cross.

No. But sometimes after this step and reconnecting the battery the device boots up. Also a battery calibration is done.
I tried plugging in the tablet to the computer with the old battery and then without any battery. Neither one prompted anything in the device manager. Today I got the new battery (assuming its legit and in good condition) in the mail. I plugged it in, and nothing. Plugged the tablet with the new battery to the wall charger, nothing. Plugged the tablet with the new battery to the computer while running device manager, nothing.
I'm going assume that the new battery is dead and let it stay connected to the wall charger for 8+ hrs, and see if there are any changes.
I just really don't understand what the deal is and why this would randomly happen. Ive never had problems with the firmware or anything. I have felt like there was an issue with the battery being that it doesn't seem to be keeping much of a charge... but for it to just Hard Brick like this seems so out of the blue. Can anyone provide me with additional suggestions please?

Is there any way to test if the batteries are food? That way I can at least determine if the tablet is in fact hard bricked or just bad batteries.
Might not be what you want to hear, but if different cables, chargers and batteries don't work, then maybe there was a power surge overnight while the device was plugged into the wall that took out the device (I once lost a computer that way and now I only use surge suppressors (note that not all power bars are proper surge protectors! See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surge_protector ) that are UL 1449 certified with a low clamping voltage and high energy absorption rating as a minimum; the fancier ones can even tell you if your wall outlet has a grounding problem). Or your tablet's USB port is broken, but that doesn't make sense based on what you've said thus far. Or you're just super-unlucky and all of your replacement parts are also faulty (it could happen). Either way, I've got my fingers crossed for you!
In the meantime, a multimeter would be able to tell if the batteries hold a charge, and whether or not power flows to the device when the battery is attached or the device is plugged into the wall or computer.
Just make sure you read up on how to use one first so you don't accidentally electrocute yourself:

Ill definitely be looking into this option in depth tomorrow, and deeply appreciate it. At least it's something. T_T I don't want my tablet going to electro grave. This sucks so bad. This has been a month from hell
First my printer decides its time to start printing crooked over a couple of months, getting so bad that it jams up a few weeks ago, requiring me to get a new printer, which has been a fiasco in and of itself that still hasnt been resolved. Ive gone through 4 printers in one week, all of them different model printers, all from HP, and each and every one of them defective.
Then my laptops video card tweaks out because of installing Splashtop Stream, which starts a domino effect requiring me to do a factory reset on the laptop.
Then my Tablet just decides to kill over.
Then my Microsoft Arc mouse decides it doesn't the want to wheel to work requiring me to purchase a new one, and when I receive it, the cover for the battery compartment is missing and the wheel click is defective. It took 2 and a half weeks to resolve
Then I get bronchitis.
all in less than a month.
Alright, ya... it's dead. Oh well. Here's me trying to make the most of it: are there any places that buy bricked tabs? I figure the parts have to have some sort of salvage value.... maybe.
You can't go to a Samsung service shop? They might not fix it under warranty, but I assume they'll have a look at it and give you an estimation? I feel for you, we all have had these awful weeks... I soft bricked my pad, my computer started to play up, my other computer decided it wanted to die after years of hard work and not skipping a beat, my son got the flu, the missus was on her monthly(grumpy wife..take cover), and when I took a break from it all on the toilet I found that we had run out of paper! To make matters worse, my favorite football team lost from a second division team.. This all happened in one single day! So chin up, it might take a week, but when all it's fixed again you'll experience deep appreciation for the things you have taken for granted.... (xda fixed my tablet, time fixed my wife)

K, So first off I took the tablet with extra battery to a tech place in the area that said the batteries are fine, but when they put a multimeter to the motherboard nothing came back. Basically its dead according to them. There's one more shop in the area I want to get a second opinion from. Next, does anyone know anything about an app called "Splashtop Stream"? I'm a fond user of Splashtop to control/view my computer straight my tablet, but when I installed "Splashtop Stream" to use the tablet as an extended screen (not just a cloned second screen), my tablet and both computers I tried it with did NOT like it. I immediately uninstalled it, but it dawned on me that it was just a matter of days later that my Tablet died. I hate to grasp at straws, but if an app like that is too resource intensive, I'm okay with seeing a connection that it fried my tablet. I can't just ask Splashtop "Hey, does your app fry motherboards", so I need a way of researching legitimate known problems. I can't afford a $400 tablet right now.
The reason why I'm using Samsung as a last resort is because it's outside my warranty time, and the moment they know that I did even the simple fast-mod on it, they'll slap it down and won't help. There no custom boot or Roms on it.
With all this said, any suggestions anyone?

I immediately uninstalled it, but it dawned on me that it was just a matter of days later that my Tablet died. I hate to grasp at straws, but if an app like that is too resource intensive, I'm okay with seeing a connection that it fried my tablet. I can't just ask Splashtop "Hey, does your app fry motherboards", so I need a way of researching legitimate known problems. I can't afford a $400 tablet right now.
The reason why I'm using Samsung as a last resort is because it's outside my warranty time, and the moment they know that I did even the simple fast-mod on it, they'll slap it down and won't help. There no custom boot or Roms on it.
With all this said, any suggestions anyone?

I randomly bumped here and I'm no expert, but if your tablet's motherboard is indeed dead, I believe there is absolutely no way they can tell that the device got rooted at some point. You did not "hard brick" it, that's a whole other thing, or at least so I've learned in my not-very-long experience. "Hard brick" should be the result of flashing a kernel made some other device, which definitely is not your case. Moreover, that does not kill the motherboard, it just makes anything unbootable: it's a software problem, so it can actually be detected. You had a hardware failure that most likely completely wiped any proof that you have ever modified your device, so the only problem that you might have, I think, is them telling you that they take no responsibility for what your power outlet has done to the device, but they shouldn't be able to detect any modification that you have made. In my opinion technical support is worth trying.

Just thought Id let everyone know that I managed to get Samsung to compromise on the matter since the Tablet is only 5 months past warranty (1yr 5mnths since purchase). So, not much longer and hopefully Ill have a tablet that works yet again.
I'm at a loss as to what's going on. A few months ago I was changing up my ROMs and went to charge my phone and left the room. When I came back I was smelling that dreaded burning circuit board type of smell. Now none of my stock USB cords work with my stock charger. In fact I have 50 or so USB's and the only one that will still work is an old one from my Samsung device.
Just today I got a quick charge 2.0 and plugged it in and to my surprise it worked! Then about 30 minutes later noticed it was not charging. Hold the phone up to my nose and sure enough I smell a slight burning smell again. Is my device no longer going to be able to charge normally? I can't think of anything else to do. Could it be kernel related? Any help or troubleshooting ideas would be wonderful. Thank you so much guys!
Seems like that is a problem with your phone components not with software.Tell me about your battery life.If you connect your phone to a PC did your phone charge?Did you tried changing your rom with the original one?

Thanks for the reply. PC only would work if the cord being used was one of the 1 or 2 that actually work. I did have a little increased battery drain that seems to be decreasing my battery about 30% or so faster than before. I was going to investigate further, but it wasnt at an alarming rate as of yet. I honestly chalked that up to the ROM. I have Multiboot installed and CM6 is the same...100% hardware issue at this point...just not sure if the root of it started from the kernel or not.
I do have an update though...so it seems the part that burned last night was the final straw and now even the 1 charger that worked won't do anything...seems like I'm dead. Took it into Sprint (I have insurance) and they are going to replace it. Sadly looks like it won't be here until Tuesday. I tweeted Sprint about the issue and they'll be calling me shortly. If my insurance/warranty covers my issue and it's believed to be a defective phone I do not understand why I should be without a phone for 6 days. At the very least give me a loaner...but even that doesn't seem to be the best solution for an issue such as this. Good news is my phone won't take a charge so there's no need for me to try and make sure they can't tell I'm rooted.
Sprint used to be really good about customer service w/ having phones overnighted to your house or in store exchange. Those are distant memories now though.

Okay, hello XDA Forums peoples! Ive been lurking here for like a decade. I feel bad for bothering you nice people, but now I'm at my wits end with this phone.
Okay, so, long story short:
Z Fold 3, let it run the One U.I. 4 update, bricked the whole phone, wouldnt come back on. This happens a week away from being out of warranty. So i get samsung to agree to let Asurion/uBreakiFix repair it (I almost always fix my own electronics, I hate Asurion, I've had problems dealing with them before, but its free so whatever). Well they get it working, i asked what they did and they were basically like 'uhhh idk'. I assume it was just an 'unplug the battery and plug it back in' kind of thing.
Anyways fast forward to a couple months ago. Im walking along the creek, i always keep my phone in my backpack for safety. Zipper on my backpack comes open some, phone falls out and directly into the water for about 3-5 seconds. Goes black within 15 minutes. Alright, so it seems like maybe the boys who worked on this didnt seal it back properly. Whatever.
I let it dry for about 4 or 5 days. Comes back on, everything works except the front screen's digitizer(which is cool for me, because the inside screen still works fine) and its reporting too cold to charge, so now once the battery runs out i have a new foldable brick! Yay! I check the battery temperature thats reported in settings and its completely fine. I hit it with a hair dryer for like 5 minutes to try and trip the thermometer, and nothing happens.
I tried some cheap shots in the dark, i replace the USB charging board, i replace the wireless charging coil, both of which have thermistors on other older samsung phones, so i figured it was a decent guess. Still too cold to charge.
So I find a schematic, or not exactly a schematic, but like a boardview, i guess. So at least i know where the thermistors are to check them. Theres about 10 thermistors on the main and sub boards. 5 of which are covered by metal shielding which i am just terrified of trying to remove, mainly because i havent done it before. So i check the other half.
The thermistors used in these phones are like inverse, so they have less resistance for higher temps and more resistance for lower temps. If one of them is dead, it will have like "maximum resistance", right? Which would report the coldest possible temperature, right? So that all makes sense, to me at least.
The 5 i can get to with my meter to check, they seem to work completely fine. From what research ive done they seem to be like 100k resistors when measured at ~70 degrees f, and i can watch the resistance go up and down when its cooled or heated past that temperature. Okay, perfect. That all checks out.
Because the other ones are under some metal shielding, i assume theyre most likely fine because any water would have a harder time getting in there. So i skip to the most expensive option so far: i buy two replacement batteries. The schematics do not include the battery, so i dont know where the thermistors are on my current batteries to check them, if that was the problem.
Well, batteries came yesterday, i pop them in, still too cold to charge. I've already ran the phone dead checking it, so i cant do any further diagnostics with the phone on. And now the most i get is a Yield sign with a thermometer in it when i plug it in.
Okay, so... Idk?? This problem is starting to get over my head. What do y'all think? It seems like my options are becoming more limited and expensive.
I can try and put a big blob of solder on the top of the shielding and pull it off to check the remaining thermistors, which seems to be how people remove those things. I also have have hot air at my disposal, which is always risky with tiny things because too high airspeed might blow components away on the board and then i'll probably cry.
It could just be a connector somewhere on some flex cable? Maybe? I mean like maybe what if one of them is for reporting temperature, and water corrosion is stopping it from sending a signal through???
Im fine with doing whatever, but i just want a charged battery first so i can recover my data before i do anything that drastic. I mean, back in the day they had 4 big pads on a removable battery. You could buy a universal samsung battery charger or rig a USB cable to charge it, but I have literally no idea what to do here. Does anyone know of some specialized battery charger that will connect to these flex cables?? That would be a gigantic help right now. Or if i knew where to get a Z Fold 3 just to pop it open and charge my battery with? Or maybe just sit there for 2 hours holding two wires to the positive and negative pins?!??!?? I dont know. Someone throw ideas at me, please!
Might be worth buying a bench power supply and either injecting voltage through the phone or connecting it to the cells to trickle charge them back up? Im not an expert it these just throwing ideas
