Question Is there an easy way to Backup/Restore the desktop? - Google Pixel 6 Pro

My 256gb Pixel 6 Pro has a dead usb data port, so I have been sent a replacement. I'd like to restore the look and feel of my current phone's desktop. Is there an easy way to do this. I will definitely make a backup with adb when I get the new phone set back up, but I'd like to not have to do it manually. I have a backup of the phone using "MyBackupPro," but it doesn't restore the look of the desktop, just the files. My current phone has 5x6 icons on the desktop, and changing the settings of the Display Size, I can't get it to go any smaller.
Is there a way to do this? If this has been discussed on a previous thread, please send the link, because I couldn't find it.
Thank you.

What launcher are you using? The stock Pixel launcher? I was under the impression that if you use Google's built-in ability to backup user app data to your Google account, you could restore it for the Pixel launcher. I don't have experience with that since I use Nova Launcher Prime. I *think* that it too has the ability to restore backups automatically from Google's cloud when you first set up the phone, but I use Nova's ability to manually backup my home screen/app drawer setup every time I change how it's set up. I save those backups directly to a folder in Google Drive that I made for the purpose.

Stock Android 13. All current apps, contacts, and photos are installed at setup. Apps for older versions of Android are not installed (even if they work), nor are SMS/MMS messages. It's the "look and feel" that I want reinstalled.

Understood. I believe Google's optional automated backup (and optional restore) includes the app data for the Pixel Launcher, which is what you would want to restore from Google's built-in backup option in order to get your launcher setup restored.
Only apps where the developer has included Google's API for automated backups work this way. I'm working from memory about the Pixel Launcher because I immediately install Nova Launcher on any new device. I believe Google has implemented their optional backup in their Pixel Launcher.
Go to your phone's settings' search field and search for Backup. I do pay for Google One since a year ago, but the ability to backup and restore exists for totally free Google accounts as well, and I've been taking advantage of it for the past 6-7 years.

I found that the "wallpaper" has the grid settings, and that I had a 5x5 (not 5x6) grid on my old phone. So, that has been solved. I looked at the native "backup," and I haven't saved one. I'll do one on the old phone and restore on the new and see where that gets me. I have 29 days left to send back the old phone.

Note that I believe you can only restore data from Google's automated app backups when you set the phone up fresh. At the point where the phone asks if you have an old phone that you want to physically connect via USB-C cable, just choose the option telling it you don't have a cable or old phone (I forget what exactly the language is of the options available), then it'll proceed to offer to restore from Google's backup, assuming you're connected to either Wi-Fi or mobile data already.

Choose restore settings after reset and restore, will restore 90% of what you want look and feel, including ALL your desktop layout and apps, note generally not all apps will restore if they don't support some google backup and restore protocols for me that is about 10 out of 280, widgets you will most likely need to reconfigure, thats about it.

I had to go with the Google backup option because the data connection was not working. Unfortunately, it only reinstalls apps (that are still available in the app store, not apps for older versions or ones no longer available, or ones that were side loaded), and photos, not text messages, nor settings customizations that were made in apps. At least I have a working phone again.

Did your desktop layout and android settings restore back, since this was the context of this thread from the title?
Yes and it also doesn't install some apps that are still in the playstore if they don't conform to some google backup protocols.
Photos should remain in the cloud and will autodownload if you want to view them? If you didn't have them backed up into the cloud and didn't manually back them up via computer then...
custom app config, if not handled by the app designer should be, when I sign back into quite a few of my apps this come back, others not, can't blame google for that as much as the app builder.

MIUI Backup Question

Hi everyone,
Quick question about MIUI's Backup App. I haven't used it yet, but I was wondering if I use it, what all will it actually backup for when I eventually switch to a new phone, root and install a build of miui. Obviously contacts don't matter because they're tied to my google account anyway, and apps don't matter either (and I doubt it backs up app data like game saves and stuff, right?) but I'm guessing it will backup my themes, folders, arrangement of icons, widgets I currently have active... What else? Also, when I get the new phone, i'm guessing I'd have to wait until I have all my apps & widgets reinstalled before running the MIUI Backup Restore option or else how's it going to rearrange my icons and all that after they're installed? So that would in theory be my LAST step after getting a new phone, right?
Thanks for the info.
I'd like to know this also
do not choose to backup/restore your contacts. When you use MIUI's built in back up for that, it will not sync with your google account, I found out the hard way.
MIUI's built in back up is a bad ass feature! When you back-up apps and data, I'm fairly certain that includes games saves and whatnot, I don't play games on my phone so I'm not 100% on that. But the homescreen backup actually remembers where you have your apps put, the location on the screen, folders, etc. the only thing that doesn't restore when you do this are widget's, I'm always having to put my weather widget back when I do an update.
You can also back up your data to the MIUI cloud servers when you sign up for an account
MIUI's Backup/Restore Application is amazing. It backs up literally EVERYTHING on your phone and when you upgrade your MIUI ROM, it restores EVERYTHING back to how it was before you upgraded, its one of the best features on MIUI, in my opinion. It takes out the hassle of re-installing applications. As far as I know, it should save your current game saves and states. It saves everything about an application. But make sure and not to backup your Contacts because they are synced to your Google Account. It duplicates your Contacts when you restore.

[Q] Backing Up N7 2

Hi All. First time poster. I've been an iOS guy since the 3GS, but over the last 6 months or so started to look at moving away from Apple due to their price structure. After picking up a N7 2 for a fraction of the cost of an rMini, I couldn't be happier and might never go back to Apple. I'm still getting use to the differences between the ecosystems and the differences in how things worked. It's amazing how many things are different.
The one nice thing I liked about Apple/iTunes/iOS was the way you could backup a device and when you restored it even GUI preferences were restored. So if you had a News folder all your news apps were in the folder in the same location on the screen.
I've done some searching, and I know there are some third party apps that do local backups but I haven't been able to find if there is anything, including the stock Google backup, that will do a backup to include system settings to the same level of detail as iTunes did. Can someone point me in the right directions? Does Titanium Backup do this? What all does the stock backup program backup? When you restore an Android device is it smart enough to redownload all the apps that were on the device? Is there a part of this question that I'm missing?
System settings don't get restored for the most part. This is due to it causing problems (especially when flashing ROMs). Homescreens can be saved if you use a third party launcher such as nova or apex. Titanium can backup system apps like settings and restore it, but that can cause major issues, so just avoid it. Stock backup can backup apps, photos, pretty much just core things. When restoring, there's an option to allow the device to restore all your apps.

So what I'm hearing is that if you want to make sure that you get a good restore it's best to always start from scratch.

Not always. The restoring of apps is usually only an issue with restoring data of ones that were used on ICS and then you flashed a jb ROM. I've always restored app and data with titanium and never had an issue. Just don't do that with system apk's.

[Q] New Note 3 owner from Nexus 5 - have issues & questions

I have the Nexus devices (5 and 7) and it was a breeze to to configure the phone (rooting, etc.) and easier because there is only one version of the phone. Now I have the T-Mobile Note 3, I tried to read as much as I can but there are so many questions due to the many variables on the phone (carrier version, locked bootloader, etc.) So I thought I will ask those I couldn't find the answers.
My phone is rooted using Kingosoft, KNOX is not tripped and on stock ROM with T-Mobile SIM card.
Problem: Wi-fi instability
Often times, the Note 3 will lose connection to my home Wi-Fi. I have not changed anything on my router and the Nexus 5 and 7 works fine - no disconnection. The Note 3 is connected to 5Ghz N with WPA-PSK and dynamic IP address. Any fix on this?
Q1. Text-to-speech
How do I change the this to use Google's instead of Samsung S-Voice? When I got to Settings, only S-Voice is selectable. I want to change it for navigation purposes
Q2. Home button - double click
Any change to configure this for something else, like Google Search? I've frozen S-Voice so double-clicking the button now does..nothing.
Q3. Disable My Magazine swipe-up
Quite often I accidentally swiped-up. Any way to disable this?
Q4. WTH is Beaming Service for Beep'nGo??
Went to Google Play --> My Apps and there is a new update for Beep'nGo. I did not install this, but I found out I cannot disable this - I could not find it under Titanium or Application Manager. How do I disable this? I am sure it's running in the background and eating battery of some sort
Q5. What is safe to Greenify?
From Nexus 5, there are just a few built-in apps in Greenify. But with the Note 3, there are tons of them, not including the apps I installed. Which one of these I can disable? See screenshot below.

I am referring to question related to the configuration, not problem that will be fixed by "reset" or restore to stock ROM. Example:
Q1: Changing text-to-speech --> out of the box, it default to S-Voice --> doesn't matter if I restore to stock
Q4: Beepn'Go --> out of the box, it exist --> doesn't matter if I restore to stock
...and so on.
Im sorry, then I dont use those features so I cant help u,, I just looked at mine, its samsungs aswell. Seems like an apk would add the feature..

That's interesting.. I know Google TTS is installed out of the box, but when I went to Google Play, there is nothing under "My Apps" to UPDATE this. When I search for Google TTS, it said I can "install" it. So for some reason it was not installed in my Note 3, BUT it exist under Settings. I'll try to install it

I disabled S-Voice (freeze using TB). Do I have to unfreeze this to get this to work?

1) Great. Lemme know if it worked after installation.
2) I think mostly yes, you have to unfreeze it, as the app launches Google Voice Search when S-Voice is activated. But I am not sure. You can always try it and let us know
Google TTS used to be installed on Samsung devices by default until recently. You just need to install it off of the Play Store and it will show up under Settings as an option.
For questions 2 and 3, I assume you're still using the TouchWiz launcher? You can install a launcher from the play store that will let you change the look and feel of the device, including changing\updating gestures such as double clicking the home button or swiping up. I'm using Next 3 Launcher right now and I set it so I have to swipe up with 2 fingers for My Magazine to launch. Previously I was using Apex launcher and it actually has more settings for you to play with. I just wanted to try a new launcher so I switched. Other notable launchers are Go Launcher Ex, Nova Launcher, and ADW Launcher.
I have no clue on questions 4 and 5.

Anyone used Google's app/data restore successfully?

I let it restore, seemed like it was gonna take a hundred years for 79 apps, so I stopped halfway through and used titanium. But from what I could see, none of my user apps were having any data restored on them. System settings restored fine, but you could already do that before Marshmallow. So has anyone used Google's restore AND had their app data restore?
I got the 5X on Saturday and restored from my Nexus 4 backup .
Restored 79 Apps, it missed a few I think because Marshmallow required a upgraded version

Did it restore the data for all the 79 apps as well?
When I restored my Nexus 5X from Nexus 5 (Marshmallow), it restored fine for system settings, apps themselves & the most of Google Apps data... but not Google Authenticator data. Any 3rd party app data (include games) were not restored, as far as I remember.
As I remember their was a new option for restoring .. Something about all the accounts and settings
Did not try that one

I've noticed this as well. Because I read that apps are supposed to restore their data even if you re-install it down the road, outside of the initial phone setup restore. In doing some research, I believe I read somewhere that the third party apps need to support the backing up and restoring of user data. So my assumption was just that maybe not many apps do support it?
Edit: Turns out I read that in the Google documentation. This page points it out in two places -- "third-party app settings and data (varies by app)", and it requires the "app also uses the backup service".

If you look in the settings of Google Drive you can see what apps are using the new backup features.
From what I understand, existing apps will need to be updated to the new API level and may need to have the feature enabled by the developer. New apps written for the new API should automatically have it enabled but the developer still have the option to turn it off if they want.

Question Notifications Issue (After Data Transfer from S21U to ZFold4)

Hello all - I apologize in advance if this may not be the correct way to approach my issue; whether that be post locale, or otherwise..
So.. Not long ago (4-5 months ago) I went to ATT to transfer my S21U to someone else on my plan, and upgrade to the Z-Fold 4; I did the whole "Smart Switch" rigamarole, and all seemed to go over smoothly. After about 3-4 weeks into using my Fold4, I realized that I wasn't getting notifications as promptly, or regularly as I used to. In fact, I was getting what I have aptly named "Ghost" notifications.
What I mean by that is I would get the usual notification sound, but nothing to show for it. No evidence of any app having new data pushed to my phone whatsoever. I did quite a bit of research.. looked into the Notification History, checked each apps Notification permissions/settings.. nothing was off/out of the ordinary. Eventually, after not finding *any* sign of how to fix this.. I turned off reminders, as I would get constant notification sounds without any idea as to which app was prompting me. The biggest contender to this issue is Snapchat. I've quadruple checked in-app settings, and sextuple checked phone settings - everything is cranked to the max to make sure the notifications reach me visually, and audibly.
There are some other apps that I believe have the same issue, or a similar but less regular issue. GMail app will send me notifications as you'd expect.. but I will get 10-20 email notifications all at once, instead of seeing them come in 1s or 2s like I had before on my S21U; not to mention I can no longer get the "Is this You?" login notification from GMail when signing into a new/forgotten device.. Same for say Steam/Steam Chat apps.. I don't get many notifications from those, but I don't see them at all, anymore. The Messages app is the only consistent/normal behavior I have as far as I can tell. Among some more background oriented notifications like State Farm's "Drive Safe & Save", and system apps like Modes and Routines etc etc..
So, my question is.. ultimately, how do I fix this?! Is there maybe a file that was brought over from the S21U that might be causing conflict? Some kind of system cached files preventing the apps from sending the data down the right 'pipeline' so to speak? I've tried forum after forum in researching this.. I could not find an answer. I'm finally Fed. Up. I don't want to have to completely wipe/reset my phone as I've a lot of apps, and data that I would very much like to not have to back-up, or set up again. It takes me hours.
I was using the Nova (prime) Launcher for quite some time.. and did Smart Switch while it was active on the S21U; but decided to switch back to OneUI once the newest update came out.. ((really like the quick-access toolbar when unfolded - which doesn't work with launchers)) .. Could the launcher have caused some weird rare issue?
I'm at a loss here. I've no clue where to go; I've been on Windows systems my entire life, other than the slightly more advanced use of Android in between. To finish off the info, all apps are up to date.. Android OS is up to date.. as far as I can tell, I'm never more than ~5-10% behind on updates when I check based on the amount of apps, and data I have on my phone.
Help. Please. Lol
Thanks, ahead of time. Will check back every couple hours to see what questions/answers might come along.
Regards,
-Fordo
Don't use SmartSwitch especially to backup critical data as it can fail you miserably. It may fail when used between different models or OS versions.
Try clearing the system cache from the boot menu, that might solve it.
Otherwise factory reset.
Backup all critical data redundantly first. Copy/paste. Verify size and if readable.
Factory reset from settings, deactivate Google and Samsung accounts first. Make sure you have copies of all your pass words!
Do a clean load after factory reset. Hand load it, take your time and think it through first from start to finish. Do it right the first time...
ApkExport can be used to make installable copies of your current apps. No Playstore needed, speeds reload time and reduces headaches.

If only I had known before-hand. I'd used it a couple times before with no issues.. but I guess there's a possibility this is the first. Rough...
Since system cache wipe is quick, I went ahead and did that for now.. so far, still nothing from Snap; not that it's important to have notifications from it.. I have ~10 people on there, mainly family.. just annoying - and makes me wonder what else isn't working that I've not realized.
Looks like I'll end up going through a factory reset sometime this week. PITA for sure. Thanks for the tips on that; I'll check out the APK Export, too.. seems very convenient! Cheers.

I've used SmartSwitch's predecessor, Kies. It was worse. It only takes one screw up by either to make a huge time consuming mess to clean up. Worse critical data may end up being lost.

It may be an incompatibility with that OS version.
Make sure the app is updated. Sometimes clearing its cache and if necessary data can resolve issues.

It's always best to do a clean load. I don't upgrade or update my firmware as that can easily screw up an otherwise good load. With a major firmware upgrade you should do a factory reset.
This stock N10+ is still running on Pie, last update was over 3 years ago. The current load will be 3yo in June, still fast and very stable with minimal maintenance. Security simply is not an issue; no malware in that time frame. This is what Android is capable of, it can be a very robust OS.
There a few things I do to mitigate the chances of existing security holes. Wifi is always disable, I run a firewall, use only Gmail and most importantly I'm very careful with any apps I install. Any side loaded ones are scanned with online Virustotal; any doubts they don't get loaded. All apps the absolutely don't need internet are firewall blocked. I don't allow apps to update either as that's a known payload upload strategy that's happened more than once.
Brave browser* is my primary browser as it's near bulletproof. I also use this DNS setting to globally block app adware and some blacklisted sites.

*I'll back out of bad sites if that fails I'll close the browser, reopen and try to close that tab. If that fails I clear the browser cache and if all that fails I'll clear the browser data as a last resort. I had to do that only once with the Samsung browser.
I also police the download folder daily for anything I didn't authorize. All files are vetted before being moved into the database. At the minimum I'll open jpegs to make sure they are clean. I've encountered a scripted jpeg on Android; damage was minimal as it was caught in the download folder. Had it made it
Into a larger folder of files it would have made a mess. Best to store files in a folder as it acts as a firewall to this type of malware. That's how I handle media files like mpegs.
My backups are complete and time staggered on separate hdds and flash drives so even if one gets compromised I don't lose all my data. All critical data is redundantly backed up multiple times and stored in different locations, off line.
Develope a plan, think it though and implement it. Digital data can be very fragile...
