Hey, so I bought this phone around a week ago and while I love its hardware, I'm having real trouble getting it to move smoothly.
Specifically, I noticed that the screen drops to 60 Hz or less in many apps (confirmed through developer options), slowing down things like the drop-down menu as well. Now I understand that YouTube and most apps do not support more than 60 Hz: however, I do not understand why the phone slows down the scrolling and the notification menu as well. I previously had a One Plus 7 Pro that remained buttery smooth in the menus, even when running YouTube.
Is there a way to force the screen to 120 Hz for Vivo phones? I have tried a lot of the options which work for other brands (tried Setedit, ADB commands, SmartHertz etc), yet they do not do anything on the X80 Pro.
Did anyone manage to force the refresh rate in any way on this phone or on another recent Vivo phone? I haven't been able to find much for X80 Pro specifically.
None so far, and all the apps support 120hz unless coded differently.
On mine ROG6, ALL apps works at ALL the refresh rates, on the vivo however, Youtube and spotify stuck on 60hz no matter what, it's purely Vivo's fault and i hope they'll fix it in the upcoming updates.
I hope they fix it soon as well, my Vivo is laggier than a midrange phone in daily use, despite having stellar hardware and great results in benchmarks. Certainly didn't expect that lol.

Yeah me neither, still shocked how slow it is compared to any phone, actually.

I am on W30 funtouch OS 12.0.12.12 and I noticed that Show Refresh Rate is now showing 120 Hz all the time if 120 Hz is selected in settings. Even Youtube is at 120 Hz which is great. Even in Smart switch mode the refresh rate only toggles between 60 Hz and 120 Hz . In essence LTPO has stopped working and I did not notice battery drainage as such so I am happy also due to concerns on LTPO safety on eyes and the phone feels fast irrespective of whether an app supports 120 Hz or not
I had to choose 120 Hz specifically, when I used "Auto" mode it was down to 60 Hz in e.g. Chrome/Brave. Now it's 120 Hz there. Only app I can see with 60 Hz are games and youtube.
Latest SmartHertz version now supports manual modes, maybe with forced mode it will work on Vivo. Try it!

Can the LG G7 force the screen refresh rate to 75Hz or higher
I do wish it has higher refresh rate display, but unfortunately, upon the longer the system standby timer, the the less UI smoothness it will be. Despite having a 60Hz display, there are some hiccups, dropping out frame rates. The annoying resolution is to restart the LG G7 ThinQ every 2 or 3 days to feel smoother & faster. I wished the higher refresh rates would solve the problem, really it does not solve the problem. In 2020, a midrange SD 765 device with 120Hz display definitely has seen UI hiccups or stuttering. I surely blame LG for not providing us unlocked bootloaders, so we can enjoy custom kernels, which helps us change the CPU governors etc, which would greatly improves LG G7's overall performance even with custom refresh rates, i.e Google Pixel 3 or the One Plus 6 has smoother performance than the G7, despite all uses 60Hz displays. I surely will switch to any device with 2K resolution bearing 120Hz displays, eagerly waiting for the One Plus 8 Pro.
After using the 120hz mode on S20+ Exynos, I'm finding it really hard to adjust to 60hz
Everything runs very choppy and I can notice it deliberately cut the frames
This lag is not noticeable on other pure 60hz phones
Either something is wrong with my device or it is how it is?
My guess - It feels like Samsung is just slowing down the CPU power to animations to make it feel like 60hz??
Is it the same experience for yours too?

it is known that samsung underclocks the cpu in 60hz mode.. that is why you see lag.. my wifes s10 runs smoother at 60hz than my s20+

Exactly! Is there a to improve speed to make it look better on 60hz?
Maybe not as bad as samsung 60hz but i have compared with my sister's iphone 11 and for sure there is a huge difference between 60 and 120hz display
lol, it's not laggy, it's the hz and how the eye perceive the animations...
Try to debloat:
-game optimizing service
-smart fps aduster
-others that contain "mali drivers" or "galaxy drivers"
Funny enough I tried 60 earlier and I noticed the lag...but as noted your eyes have just adapted to a better refresh rate...
Funny I use a note 9 and 60hz doesn't feel or look as laggy as it is on current samsung 120hz panels when in 60hz mode. I believe samsung make 60hz perform worst intentionally. Dirty scum bags.
Same f*cking here on Realme Q5 pro!!! PLEASE SOMEONE DO ANYTHING WITH THIS. I CANT HANDLE IT ANYMORE
Just trying to play Donkey Kong Country Returns on the Snapdragon 860 Xiaomi Pad and I notice fps drops on 1x and 4x. Try every setting, nothing changes. Even Gpu usage is only half.
Then I enabled fps counter and whenever it hits 30 C max it throttles to super low fps and doesn't go any bit higher. Explains the stutters I had in other Games.
30 C is nothing, feels like a scam, it runs like a low-end device.
Is there any fix? Any tutorial that works? With root or so? Just 35 C would be enough, It’s just 10 C here too. If not don’t buy Xiaomi for games, it’s not playable at all! It’s like a bad joke.
Over here the same problem and stuttering in fixed 60hz emulators

Sucks man, surprised no ones talking about this. The device is easily strong enough for 3DS and even some Switch games, but with this maybe it can't even do some older emulators smoothly, will do some more testing.
So here is the Video:
Flickering is due to the video recording only, but you can still see that it runs fine until the temp hits 30c, then it becomes very slow. You can see the graphic turn orange.
hopefully a developer can port a kernel of the xiaomi x3 pro that they share the same soc and all these problems can be solved, since I bought it for emulation and it does not work smooth as silk
I hope so! But I found a fix for this problem at least, you have to use Citra, not Citra MMJ, there seems to be a problem with that version. In normal Citra it runs at 60 fps at over 35 C but it still has some frame drops from time to time.

I have Poco X3 Pro... it does have thermal throttling also... but I managed to get rid of throttling by flashing a HAVOC OS custom rom...
MIUI is known for throttling SOCs...
I have the same problem when playing Hearthstone. Anyway to turn off thermal throttling completely ?
All setup. Now to go through some testing.
My biggest fear are all the heating videos on YouTube. I see in settings that auto screen refresh rate has the phone constantly refresh at 120hz!. So you basically have 120, 60 or 144hz, each staying constantly at those refresh rates. I'm not happy about that. 60 it is then. No wonder it got so warm during setup but now at 60 it seems OK.
It's lighter than I expected. Tired of heavy phones. I have a toolkit and sealant on the way. If heating is an issue I'm gonna open up the thing and give it some liquid metal thermal paste treatment. Lol what not. The phone was fairly cheap at £500
I read auto changes in some rates. 48,60,96 and 120.
And screen have a good quality?

No. Auto is a constantl 120hz. That's not good. No wonder YouTube is reporting bad battery life.
I blame android 12. My pixel 6 pro had terrible refresh rate control too
This may seem too obvious but think about it. Turning on show refresh rate option shows you a continuously changing refresh rate 10-24-30-60-120 Hz . LTPO can bring down the refresh rate to 10Hz but that constant switching between refresh rates may be adding flickers not consciously noticeable but may have an effect on the eyes in long term ?
This is to save the battery but can eyes adapt to a such a high degree of variable refresh rate ? Does anyone know the PWM frequency of Vivo X80 Pro LTPO 3.0 ? I did check with a slo-mo camera and it does show flicker (black lines moving across the screen). Honor 4 Pro is claiming a LTPO screen with highest ever PWM frequency for eliminating flicker. Any insight into this will be much appreciated.

Honor has 1920PWM if i remember correctly, idk how much the vivo has.
But i'll break you a myth, the LTPO does NOT improve performance unless you maybe watching YouTube all day and even so.
So far all the smartphones that has poor battery life, including the x80 Pro, has LTPO.
Based on my use, i just use the 120hz and it goes down to 10hz when possible, coming from the Mate 40 Pro which has 60 or 90 only with no LTPO, the Mate 40 Pro had better battery life.
They is no eye strain with either of them if you sit in the proper angle, i haven't noticed anything anyway.

Thanks for replying. Firstly Congratulations for your ROG6 phone . LTPO may be saving a little bit of battery but there are many other factors especially SD Gen 1.
But I am worried about LTPO's constantly varying refresh rate. In my 2 months of usage of X80 Pro I had two or three episodes of headache which may be very well be coincidental due to other factors. It did prompt me to research more on PWM frequency of X80 pro and what effect does LTPO have on eyes.

That's a good point that no reviewer actually checked or researched.
I had the X80 pro for a month and never had any headache, you might be sensitive to certain PWM frequency.
If you can check the Honor Magic 4 Pro you might deny or confirm that.

I have no way to check magic 4. Also , I did not find a way to force 60 or 120 Hz on X80 pro. Tried adb command and SetEdit. At least locking it to 60Hz minimum will be good enough even though it defeats the purpose of LTPO.
Does anyone know how to do that ?

It should be under the display settings>refresh rate.
Don't choose Auto, choose 120hz, and it will be 120hz all the time unless there is no motion on the screen.

Choosing a refresh rate in settings just sets the maximum refresh rate. I would like it to be at least 60Hz at all times which happens in all non-LTPO phones .

If you trigger the "show refresh rate" at the developer menu, you'll see it drops from 120hz to 10hz quite often.
Even if you'll force 60hz it will drop to 10hz, that's just how it works.
I don't think you can put a threshold of 60hz as minimum as opposed to 10hz.

Right. That's how LTPO works but in other phones , it will stay at 60Hz even if it is static picture. The flicker at 10Hz could be more than 60Hz unless the PWM frequency is high enough. Am I getting it right ?

Indeed.
But Vivo hasn't published information about the PWM frequency, so we're in the dark for now.
There is a new Notebookcheck analysis of X80 pro, but the frequency is pretty low
Vivo X80 Pro smartphone review: Primus camera with huge fingerprint sensor
In our review, the Vivo X80 attempts to impress with a quad camera, Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, ample storage, fast charging and probably the largest, fastest and most versatile fingerprint sensor.
