Hi all,
I'm currently on Arrow OS but this seems to also affect other AOSP-based custom ROMs. I don't recall whether stock is affected.
Placing my Mint Mobile SIM into the POCO F3 works just fine; I can tell there's 4G and 5G, even if there's a slightly lower speed than on my Pixel 5. Keeping it in the F3 and moving out of a cell tower causes the signal to inconsistently drop; there are times when it will constantly connect and disconnect (with the exclamation point indicating no data). Other times it'll be rock stable.
My question is: Has any one else experienced this issue, and is there resolution for it? For me, it's a deal breaker because I need reliable data (even if it's not very fast).
PS: I heard that Pixel 6/Pro owners were experiencing the same thing, right down to the signal interruptions and slower speeds. I am also aware that some ROMs seem to mimic the 6/Pro in software; does this seem to relate?
On T-Mobile US, and this also happens to me. While my connection is stable at home, it gets unstable in an urban area or while driving. I heard that this caused by the modem crashing due to a bug in the firmware and that this only happens in North America. This issue used to cause the entire phone to crash and reboot, but the kernel in most AOSP ROMs was patched to restart the modem subsystem instead, which is why you'll lose reception for ~10-30 seconds. I don't actually remember if this happened on MIUI or not.
The only things that you can do about it is to either try switching to 3G only (which will only work for so long until T-Mo shuts down their old towers) or switch back to MIUI and see if the signal still drops. However unless Xiaomi releases a firmware update to fix the modem crashes (and who knows if they will at this point), I doubt that we'll see a fix for the signal drops.
I'm also having the same/similar issue quite often. I'm still completely stock, have been using the phone since late December on Tello in the US.
The service I believe runs on T-Mo towers and is in a rural area where I go in/out of service quite a bit and it seems to really mess with the radio/modem. It seems to constantly try to connect to 5G or 4G, whichever signal is stronger. This makes it constantly lose data connection, unless I go to the phone dialer and type *#*#4636#*#* and change the radios from NR/LTE/GSM/WCDMA to just NR/LTE. Then the connection is usually ROCK solid.
Only problem is the phone will default back to NR/LTE/GSM/WCDMA shortly after. Also, I often find that text messages and phone calls have stopped coming in and I have to turn on airplane mode for 10 seconds or so and then off to get the radio/modem to reset and reconnect to data.
Came on here hoping to see that someone had a fix for this issue baked into a ROM or something, but sounds like it's still an issue... :/
Was also going to research a new phone as well because it's finally driven me crazy enough to make a change, but sounds like f4 is the only decent thing out right now?

I'd be a little cautious about getting the F4, since it has the same Snapdragon 870 as the F3. If Xiaomi hasn't fixed the modem issue in the F3, who knows if they fixed it in the F4?
hhmm I have Tello here in the USA and never had the problems you guys have and have installed different roms back & forth Arrow then the EU weekly while under preferred networks I always choose LTE since 5G seems no faster north Chicago burbs area

Thank you for this comment! I didn't even think to check the SIM settings for preferred network. Just switched it to LTE instead of 5G, now the radios are showing as (PRL) GSM/WCDMA/LTE.
Maybe this will fix my constant intermittent connection?

Let us know what happens!
hey buddy, i've been using f3 global variant for more than a year (vanilla Crdroid+microg) with T-mobile, i have nothing to complain about in urban areas, signal works 100% outdoor never lost signal but it happens inside buildings usually i notice when i'm on a call and go inside it will cause modem crash, i use osmand~ for navigation, all maps are pre downloaded into the phone so i don't really use data when travelling not sure if using google maps would cause modem crashes but i do stream videos or music and it does cut off due to weak coverage, i use a prepaid red mobile sim on att and it's excellent in rural areas, when it happens i turn off T-Mobile and redirect calls to the other sim, since coverage is way better on ATT when travelling cross country.
I'm in the US, on T-mobile, and have suffered from inconsistent mobile data as well. Some steps I took to resolve on this on A12:
- Use the latest EU firmware
- Flash Pixel Experience, format data, and reboot system (optional)
- Flash Evolution X, Gapps, Magisk
- Format Data and reboot system
- Enable roaming and wifi calling, and set the preferred network to LTE (I believe the F3 supports mot, if not all, of T-mobiles LTE bands while only supporting one 5G band)
- Try different Access Point Names. I'm using the US Mobile PWG APN
I'm connected to LTE+ with with 98.4 Mbps on the last speedtest after following these steps. I'm around my home now and TBD how well the service is when I travel away (service would become unusable if I was outside a 3-5 mile radius of my home).
I'm still bone stock. Haven't made any changes yet other than the preferred networked being changed to LTE now.
Still getting modem crashes frequently. Seems like it's always when I come and go from my house. I have absolutely zero service inside my home and I've got a weBoost Home Studio Omni setup which gives me service in the living room, but I still lose service often and I think this causes the crashes. I've been testing with the wifi calling turned off too because that has always been hit or miss as well too.

Yep, I have the same settings.
If I get some time today I think I'm going to try factory reset/clear data and flashing some new roms to see if it acts any different...

Likewise, I recently switched to the EU firmware from the Global and, contrary to what I thought, it actually works quite well! I haven't yet tested with this firmware situations where I lost data before, though. I'll update if the problem is improved or resolved.
Same problem, I have poco f3 global firmware and I try with eu firmware, same problem in both firmwares, I have AT&T and Telcel in Mexico, the problem is that the battery runs out and two lines drop, the problem is solved by putting 3g in telcel, with at&t i don't have this problem.
Nope, still there.
I'm sadly experiencing this issue in Canada running A13 custom ROM on my Poco F3. No solution in sight unfortunately.
Well, UPDATE: I switched to AT&T Prepaid in the USA and the cell connectivity issue is mostly resolved. As far as I can guess, Mint Mobile (and other MVNOs) seems to do something extra to the signal that the F3 does not like.
Same issue on Fido in Canada. The issue started more recently for me since MIUI 14. It is also around the same time Fido started to role out 5g which could be a hint as to why.
Same problem in Canada with Public Mobile for a year now. When switching tower or bands, modem crashes. Sometimes it recovers. sometimes not and I lose data and have to reboot phone...
see https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/modem-always-crashing-losing-voice-data.4581429/
As far as I can tell, both Fido and Public operate as MVNOs in Canada. If my guess is correct, your F3s are going to continue to encounter these issues unless you switch to one of the four major carriers (if they have the band support, of course).

Ive recently attained a captivate glide and unlocked it to use on t mobile. Like you would assume at first glance i had an edge connection. Although after messing around with it i realized by going to
Wireless and network > Mobile networks > Network operators >Default setup > Manual it gives me the option to choose to connect to att/ tmobile and when i chose tmobile and it registers on the network i get H+ speeds for a few minutes then it just defaults back to edge
is there a way i can keep my phone on H+ at all times because its capable

I have this problem too, but only into my house. Outdoor that´s right. I´ve tested with all modems, and I think the best for me is i927UCLH2.
Which rom, kernel and baseband do you use??
I´ve done some tests with my glide and my mother´s galaxy chat, in different places. In the street I have H+ and she H, but when we are into any house, under any roof, she still has H, and I only have E.
Does it happen to you?

Doesn't this just sound like a basic signal issue? When the signal gets worse (indoor vs. outdoor) it will drop down to a lower signal.
Also, are you sure Tmo has fully rolled out the 1900mhz band in your area? They may not have complete coverage yet.

i'm sure that it is a phone or a software phone problem, cause i've put my sim card in my last phone (xperia pro) and it has H signal too
i've tested all rogers and att modems, and still have the problem..
Hi, I have a similar prob, I'm in the uk and need it to stay on H+, as it'll drop off to 2g in the house, I've always used miui roms in the past and they have the option to force 3g etc. The only way round this I could find is to use 'pimp my rom' which allows you to select which network you want manually, such as gsm, edge, wcdma etc. Download it, go to tools, device hidden menu, turn off radio, wait, turn radio back on, then quickly select from the drop down box what signal you want, I select wcdma only. If the radio does not come back on, put on flight mode then off again, and will work.. bit annoying but works..
That happen to me too, but not for t mobile, for a operator that use 1900mhz in my country.
My N900T has much worse signal than my previous Note II - between 15 and 20 dBm worse, so essentially unusable out in the fringe area I live in.
I'm running SlimKat 9.0 (4.4.4) baseband is N900T UVUENK3 (which I think might be the most recent modem).
I'm using a StraightTalk ATT SIM (phone is unlocked) but that shouldn't matter for signal strength
I've got Preferred network type: LTE
And in service mode / phone info, I have preferred network type: LTE/GSM auto (PRL) - unchanged from standard.
I've removed the back cover (the one under the battery door) and made sure all the "fingers" make good contact with the contact pads that are built into that cover (fixed my GPS but not baseband)
Anything else I can check? Should I try some ATT radios to see if signal improves?
Or is this just the nature of the beast? Move to the city or get a different phone?
Thanks for any input!
Had this problem but hopefully the fix I used will work better. I flashed pac rom from nightly and resulted in no signal even though showed 3 bars(never higher or lower) but no connection in reality. Tried this and got signal kinda ( very slow and missed calls and sms)
Anyway
On tmobile network but might help either way idk never had att.
First goto
Settings/More Networks/...
Then first try the lte if not heard using 3g can fix signal connection with custom roms.
Check your apn settings and verify with att/simple talk
And if needed hit the mobile operators and let it do its thing.
Still not working can try fixing another way let me know.
Screens attached and can't post link ig but quick Google search should net you the setting. I did keywords "att apn settings"
Let me know how it goes. Flashing pac rom see how update goes this time for me lol
The signal got a good bit better when I replaced the antenna signal cable. Cost a whole $3.
I'm still 5 or 6 dBi down from my old note 2, but, from my forum reading, that might be the nature of this beast.
I have same problem, poor network, and sometimes when I go to some club or cafe I dont have network and on S2 same network I have full signal 3G, H+
So, i'm in the UK with my nice shiny OP3 (on Three UK) - I am rooted with twrp, but same applies on stock.
The radio in this phone seems to prefer H+/3G to 4G, even though where i live, i have full bars on both. My nexus 5 always prefered 4G, and the OP3 is set to prefer 4G but 90% of the time drops to 3G/H+
Another interesting thing, if i use the testing menu to force LTE only, even if it's on 4G already, completely stops any signal getting through for a number of minutes until it decides to connect sometime later. I have full LTE signal in my room too.
Is this a radio problem that could be solved in the future with a software update? not seen anyone else with this issue!
FYI, when it is on 4G, it's super fast and stays connected until a reboot, where the whole process starts again

APN Is exactly the same as my nexus 5, and i even added a new one. Same deal.
I'm an IT Professional, just not a developer. i've done everything i can think of. 4G does work, but only when it wants to. My phone is also registered with my carrier correctly.
Bump on this anyone?
I am having a similar problem I guess. I have the dual sims installed and one sim randomly shows no range. Further, the network preference is not the way it is supposed to be - Chose it as 4G and if 4G is not detected it falls back to 2G.

I did notice when I do have LTE it's fine but it won't re lock onto LTE after a call on Three where it has to drop to H
I'm having a problem where the phone catches 4G+ "carrier aggregation" and it'll jump from to 4g+ to 4g and back to 4g+ really fast like almost flashing . And speed test are showing low numbers. T-Mobile USA.

I first put my sim into slot 1 when I first got the device, I was having the exact same issue. I found that the data priority sim, or if you only have one sim needs to be in sim slot 2.

Yes exactly. And even then it doesn't show up straight away despite 3/4 and usually full signal. Sometimes just putting it into standby mode and leaving it 20mins can sort it... Until I get another call lol. Wondering if it's just a software or firmware issue that could be patched. Lte is fine it's just never preferred despite the options being set

APN is not the universal response. Here he faces a problem of inaccurate network type choice, APN is only to have acces to internet through the provider's proxies. It's a radio problem clearly, the baseband is probably to be corrected by OnePlus.
It's really a strange thing to see those network type issues, MMS issues are still present after all those years.

This is what I thought. It's probably an easy fix for oneplus or rom developers. Custom radios are nothing new. Let's hope so anyway!

Same issue here, have never got it to say 'LTE' for me since I got the phone, best it does is 4G whilst my Galaxy S5 would happily pickup LTE. Sorry, i mean my OP3 shows LTE in statusbar but it runs with 2G speed
S-OFF, LOCKED
Running 100% offical 1.80.401.3
4G does not work. It show 4g/4g+ and max reception in status bar but when i try and run speedtest it fluktuates from 2-5 bars and flip between 4g/4g+. Speedtest failes after 30 sec or so.
Same sim card and same location gives me 110/mbps (yes!) on a Samsung s6 so its not the network or the sim-card.
this is after a full factory reset.
any tips?
To add to this, 3G works just fine if i switch to it manualy.

100% official 1.80.401.3 ..... says so in the first lines. So my guess would definitely be NO custom rom !
There have been many threads and complains about wifi and 4g reception. My wifi works fine (not the best, but its decent). However, 4g reception is pretty bad. Mainly in indoor places, 4g shows no bars. I guess the problem also lies in the phone not automatically switching to 3g when 4g is bad. Sometimes i get no signal when there is actually 3g service. If I force the phone to 2g/3g only i get full bars. It's probably a firmware/radio issue that will be fixed in the next update hopefully. Chek the threads about weak wifi and weak lte for updates
Sent from my HTC 10 using Tapatalk
FYI: reception is 100%, ie full bar. Same sim card in a phone laying 10 cm away gives me top 4g+ speeds.
Installed 1.80.401.1 firmware and 4g works as it should (ICE rom)
Ever since the 1.80 line of software came the phone has felt slow at bootup and generaly not as fluid as on on 1.30. For instance, the animation on initial setup (rotating planet etc where you pick language) runs 100% smooth on 1.30 but on 1.80 and later, its lagging and stuttering.
it's quite weard if you ask me, why would a later software version run worse?
after a bit of investigating I can notice that the problem is the phone keeps switching cel tower.
It changes every second - it goes to close one with 4g+ and 5 bars, to another with 2 bars and 4g and up and down.
If i go to dialer and enter *#*#4636#*#* and then go to phone information and under "location" it says "CID = somenumbers". the numbers after CID are the cell tower.
It changes all the time. Phone never sticks to one.
Same sim card in a SGS6 or N5X gives me 100+ mbps 4g+ speed in the same location, but the HTC 10 is unable to stick to one tower and just keeps switching.
If i force 3G it will stay on one tower.

Exactly whats happening to me. Sometimes I also lose signal completely and phone will not downgrade to 3g. If i force it to 3g only, no problems at all. I hope its firmware related. I know someone who escalated the problem to htc and waiting for a response. I also notices that due to this problem my clock is sometimes off, as i have selected "use network provided time" under time settings.

This is only on some locations and esp where there is lte+, at my apartment with regular LTE it works just as good as any other device i have tested with. But at work i get 100+ mbps with a S6 or N5X, but the HTC refuse to get a solid fix on a tower - it keeps switching.
UPDATE: I installed the latest firmware (from maximus), 1.90.401.3. New radio or something fixed my problems with 4g!
Now i connect to 4g and 4g+ like it should and gives me around 100mbps download speeds, like on other devices.

I dont wanna do anything custom, i hope they release this update soon enough
**EDIT**
Forgot the random outgoing call issue.
Since getting my OP8P, it doesn't seem like any of the radio issues have really been satisfactorily addressed. I'm not sure if there is anything that can be done on our end to fix them, but I figured I'd create a thread to track them, and fix them if possible.
Please include your carrier, or any other differentiating factors:
MMS issues (T-Mobile): MMS messages do not come in reliably or at all with wifi enabled. SMS and RCS messages are not affected.
Fix: (Workaround) Disable VoWifi, which doesn't seem to work on as many APs as the OP7P and prior did. If that doesn't work, turn off wifi altogether to allow messages to send/receive.
--------------------------------------------------------
Wifi calling issues (T-Mobile): Wifi calling will not stay activated. Icon appears for about 30 seconds after turning on wifi. Also seems to be affecting MMS messages not sending/receiving when connected to WiFi, and potentially outgoing calls not going through reliably.
Fix: (Workaround) Possibly affected by APs that allow TKIP encryption method. Reports of only allowing AES/CMAK helping. TKIP has known vulnerabilities, but older devices may still require it be enabled.
--------------------------------------------------------
Wifi connection issues: Wifi seems to go dead 1-3 times a day. Wireless still shows a strong connection, but no data actually passes (SMS still works).
Fix: (Workaround) toggle wifi
--------------------------------------------------------
Poor 5G performance (T-Mobile): While this could be a T-Mobile issue, as they seem to have turned on 5G over most of our area using UHF bands (300mhz to 3ghz), performance is pretty choppy. Uploads seem to be more negatively affected, with speeds less than 1mbps at times. Download speeds can be up to LTE speeds, but often are not, and are almost always jumpy and not smooth during speed tests.
Potential fix: Disable 5G under: SIM & network settings > Preferred network type
--------------------------------------------------------
Occasion outbound call issue: Sometimes making an outgoing call takes 2 or 3 tries. I can't remember the error, off the top of my head, but it's something like "service not available".
--------------------------------------------------------
Can ONLY receive MMS on WiFi calling not on mobile data, SMS not affected. (details here)
Fix: use 3rd party SMS app, revoke all permissions from stock app, disable stock app

You can disable 5G in the SIM and Network settings ??*
With my old phone if I disable wifi it connects to Lte instantly and I can start surfing. With my 1+ now if I disable wifi it takes about 10sec until there's Lte but I can't start surfing. I have to switch from Lte to 2g and back to get it working. Same Sim in both phones

Good grief. I have no idea how I missed that. Thanks! I'll test and update the thread if LTE performance seems better than 5G. This very well could be a T-Mobile thing, since they just recently turned it on in my area.

I have noticed the exact same thing. I'm not sure why it takes so long... especially with dual-channel network acceleration enabled (and the fact that VoLTE is established before I shut wifi off).

My wife and I have similar problems with mobile data and wifi both occasionally showing strong signals but requiring a toggle off and back on before data passage resumes. Both OP8P and OP8. Verizon for carrier.
Well, I guess it's good to know it's happening on Verizon too?
Seriously, this needs to be fixed. If it was just one carrier, I could see it getting out the door. But more than one (very different kinds) of carriers is pretty ridiculous.
Issue: can ONLY receive MMS on WiFi calling not on mobile data, SMS not effected.

Updated OP.
I've found that disabling Voice over Wifi altogether seems to help with the MMS while on wifi issues. I still get a few that don't go through and have to shut off wifi altogether, but it's much... much better.
I'm wondering if this is also connected to my outgoing call issues. I'll be testing that also.
**EDIT**
While I still think disabling VoWiFi helps, it is still very much a crapshoot whether or not an MMS message will send or receive. Between this and the dual sim issues, I may need to see if OP will let me return this.
No idea if it's related but in comparison to EE, three is absolutely crap. Truly a horrific network, 50% of the coverage and 59% of the speed.
Have noticed that the phone aggressively tries to hand over to WiFi even when I'm not connected.
Removing 5G from the equation helps a lot, least in my instance.

Curious, how are you seeing it's trying to hand over to wifi?
I'm so upset over this stuff. It would be more tolerable if OP had some sort of official status on some of these issues. Ignoring them won't make them go away.

So it looks for WiFi constantly, also tries to switch between networks. You can disable it

Are you talking about the "Scanning always available" setting? I already have that disabled. I seem to be ok with 5G lately. Pretty sure the bad upload speeds are just due to T-Mobile working out the bugs.

Then you're fine. Don't worry about it.
I thought I'd chime in a bit with T-Mobile 5G. Minus specialized cities featuring higher frequency 5G, T-Mobile nationwide works off of the 600Mhz band, AND REQUIRES the 1900Mhz or 2100Mhz 4G LTE band to properly function at this time. So if you experience poor 4G 1900 and 2100 frequency in your area, but strong 5G, it won't work well for you, and you are better off doing 4G LTE 600mhz instead.
Call your local rep and confirm the strength for those two frequencies for you. Just thought I'd chime in about the poor 5G performance nationwide for T-Mobile for some. Nothing to do with the phone exactly.
My OnePlus 8Pro sometimes disconnects several times a day the radio conection. It's hapend with LTE on Telekom. 5G is not available yet. It's happend also in places where I have very good LTE network coverage.
Restart the cell phone is the only option to reconnect.
Switching OFF/ON the Airplane-Mode, reset network settings or a Full Wipe bring no improvement.
I have already replaced the SIM card against a new one by my network provider (Telekom) to rule out a defect.
I also have no problems with my previous device.
So I'm currently using my old device in parallel with a Multi-Sim.
A network fault therefore can be ruled out 100%.
The latest software version has also been installed.
The crash normally occurs while surfing the LTE network and is noticeable that the Internet is unexpectedly no longer working. The Radio display on the phone show me a few minutes more that i have still connection to LTE and than it jump to "no network" as already described, "ONLY" restarting the device allows to log in to the network again.
It was also tried with intelligent network connection or two-channel download acceleration on and off.
With WiFi the internet works continuously.
The Device runs with Stock-Rom.
I also have contacted the OnePlus Support, but maybe someone here has a solution for me.
Many Thanks

That is crazy. I think they may have fixed the wifi disconnects for me with the latest OTA, but when I did get them, toggling wifi worked for me. I never had to reboot over it. Your case definitely seems worse. Hopefully you don't have a hardware issue.

I have exactly the same issue with the same carrier (Telekom Germany) with 2 SIM cards tested. Gotten worse with the 10.5.9 so I rolled back to 10.5.8 where the issue isn't happening that often. I haven't got this issue when enabling data on my secondary SIM (O2 Germany). I have also tested the new Android 11 beta where I got shortly disconnected from the mobile network and then the LTE+ logo changed to "g" and everything was fine again. The phone was still connected to LTE with full DL speed (did the whole initialisation with mobile data + 20gb music download). However the beta is not usable at this stage. Since I have an unlimited data plan on that Telekom Sim I cloud test the **** out of it and it seems that the disconnect happens when the phone tries to change or adds the cell connection while using data. I have sent OP the required logs and after that they ignored me.. hope they going to fix this as it seems to be a software/compatibility issue with that certain carrier. Also 10.5.9 isn't really coming to German devices with ota so they might know about that issues.

Thanks for the feedback.
That the Problem with 10.5.9 got worse i can confirm. I loaded this Version in Germany by using the Oxygen Updater. But that gives hope to me that it is really just a software issue and no defekt on the device. So I will not send the device to OP for an unnecessary repair in the hope that there will be fixd with an update soon.
On the Facebook Oneplus page I have already heard from some people they have exactly the same problem, all of them use the German Telekom network.
Hopefully you get right, with that presumption, that 10.5.9 isn't really coming on German devices because they know the problem. So the fix will come very fast.

You guys haven't heard any buzz about 10.5.10 yet? I'm on 10.5.10 in the US, which I feel has been a lot more stable than the previous two versions (which had alternating issues for me).
The biggest issue affecting me remains the issues sending MMS while on wifi.
