Privacy / security benefits of using encrypted app on LineageOS phone? - LineageOS Questions & Answers

What is the difference between the privacy & security of using an app with encrypted communications (eg. Signal) on a phone running Google Android vs running it on a de-Googled OS like Lineage? Is there a meaningful difference, since the communication is already encrypted?

Can someone explain pros and cons of encryption and decryption?

Hi. I bought a nexus 5x. I am wondering pros and cons of encryption and decryption? And does this encryption thing available in the aosp or cm based roms?
Encryption pros: your data is safe, because if the phone gets stolen, thief can't read your data and adds the possibility to enter password before Android boot. Cons: this makes read/write operations become slower, but not noticeable in daily use, only on synthetic benchmarks.
Decryption: faster r/w, but no security.
Encryption is available on every ROM. Stock Google firmware is encrypted by default.

Are Third Party Apps Optimized For Nougat?

I've been using the latest nightly build of LOS and I've encountered stutters. Much noticeable when you're for example scrolling down the Facebook/Twitter feed. While Sense Based ROMs are so smooth!
So I'm wondering if Nougat is still unoptimized or is it just the Lineage OS, maybe to conserve battery?
Facebook is unusable nougat for me. Sometimes I even had reboots using facebook
I don't think the problem is Nougat in itself (and whether apps are optimized for it). Facebook runs perfectly on my OnePlus 3T running Nougat. So the problem is likely the ROM, or some other device specific issue (plus Nougat?).
Whether apps are optimized for Nougat, completely depends on the specific app and its developers. Some are, so are not. But since Nougat is a few months in at this point, most popular (and well supported) apps have at least been updated to support Nougat. Although how much this constitutes "optimized" will depend on your definition and personal opinion.

Switching ROMs

I'm thinking of switching from Lineage OS to Copperhead OS, but I'm worried about losing the apps and games that I have. I know there is Titanium, but I'd like to keep the ROM as secure as possible, so what is an app or website I can use to keep my apps updated without needing Google Play Services?

Great battery life
Tried this ROM today. Battery friendly like the JDC. Only Camera interface looks too old-school to my liking. And using the Camera toggles the maximum brightness which could be inconvenient in darkest environment.
Other than that, Weather location could also be improved as it detects my neighbour town instead of my own. Besides these 2 issues, all other pro/cons are quite the same to other 7.1.2 ROMs out there.
Google play support present?

If I use this Rom it's because I don't want to use Google Play Store anymore. So I don't even check it. =)
Does this use microg?
If not, is the location provider better than the mozilla location provider in microg?

Uses original market "Apps". And maby downloaded cool store - aurora store.
Why did you choose android 7.1 instead of using 8.1 or even better 9.* ?
I appreciate the works focused on privacy and in contrast with google policy, but I don't understand why you based the software on an old version of android(Lineage).

this is planned, but a little later.
Nice one, but it will be great if you'll add OMS support to the firmware for Substratum use.
Just using this rom for 2 day and there is (many) bug and the way it looks (ui) just not something like any other android rom here(more like apple). But i really like the concept and i hope it will update the android version till at least 9 and maybe more.
If there is more people interested in this rom maybe the developer will update this rom faster :fingers-crossed:
Is much to work. Rom is good, but have many bugs. I will try it later, when it will work without bugs.
As for efficiency, I can say that it is the fastest and most stable. I tried all the existing rums. But as I said, there is still a lot of work to be done on this rum. It's worth investing in. I am sure that many will pass on this rum. Reminds me of Iphone 4)) microg often shuts down. Many applications are not downloaded from Apps, I had to search for them from the browser (WhatsApp, youtube, etc.) Many applications generally do not exist, which I again downloaded from the browser. It would be useful a built-in call recorder, it would be good for gmail account to be able to connect it to the existing mail application. I have a lot of information there, which I would not want to give up. The camera app should be updated. So is the Weather app. But as a very fast, smooth and stable core. Well done for that.

Question Consumer-grade OS

Hi,
I'm looking for a consumer-grade OS for Poco F3.
I'm currently using official MIUI, but they require Mi Account to use Wireless ADB etc.
They don't allow disabling second-space feature which makes parental controls impossible.
I'm looking for a custom ROM that:
- passes Play Integrity (formerly called SafetyNet) and has big chances of not breaking it in the future
- has no issues with DRM etc.
- bootloader can be relocked
- NFC, Bluetooth etc. are working
- is not made by one person & it's security and privacy settings are recognized
- gets updates
- big plus if it is undervolted, or disables the heavy cores altogether
I'm not too well informed, but probably MIUI EU or Pixel ROM would check the most boxes?
I know the manufacturer should fix all these problems, or I should not buy from Xiaomi for delivering low-quality software., but this community is the hugest on XDA, hence my expectations are high Don't make me think that there are only subpar ROMS with weird names coming and going every week.
Thank you

Eu is the most suitable for your needs, but you will not able to relock bootloader on any rom except global.

Why? There are lots of people saying it works. Yeah, i'd do as you say, the risk of someone stealing the phone is not that high, the bigger problem is Google disabling apps for failing to comply with Play Integrity / SafetyNet

its not about stealing the phone or safetynet
if something went wrong when locking the bootloader, youre done... your phone is now hard bricked and you need to go to the service center
if you encountered a bootloop on a locked bootloader, your guaranteed last resort fix is just a factory reset, some custom roms are fcked up in a way that a factory reset wont fix the bootloop, if you encounter this, youre gonna need to go to the service center.
its never good to lock bootloader on custom ROMs or rooted stock ROMs
