I've just come from Engadget where an announcement of Gingerbread has been leaked. This is forecast for Q4 2010 and the consensus is collective pity for anyone "saddled" with HTC's Sense UI or similar manufacturer skins.
But what is the pity about? Apparently our inability to update to the latest and greatest firmware instantly leave us at a disadvantage. We miss out.
On what?
So far I've seen these features that may be in 2.2:
USB tethering
Wifi hotspot
Enabling of FM radio
JIT processing for more speed
Install apps to SD
Flash 10.1
OK, a couple of those are big news..but we've had no details on Flash and so far from all the demos it seems to run on 2.1 just fine.
Many have already gotten apps to SD by whatever means, and others are yet to face it as an issue.
We could all use the extra speed, but the Desire is hardly slow.
I personally have no need for a portable hotspot as bluetooth tethering works fine for me...it's no big loss.
The rest of the additions HTC has already been including for quite a while now. Where is the equal envy of all the features people with Sense have been enjoying while stock Android users have gone without? It all seems rather childish to cling to numbers when in reality stock 2.1 has less features than 1.6 with Sense on top.
For the majority you're happy with your phone right now. An extra feature added elsewhere should not suddenly make you think your phone is rubbish if it still performs the same functions you were happy with yesterday.
Gingerbread is 2.3.
FroYo is 2.2 and comes with all the stuff you listed. It's due next week.

I think he is saying it because 2.2 FroYo should be coming to the Desire, which includes all the features you listed above so we don't miss out of anything. Maybe a slight delay while they work Sense UI into 2.2

sorry. your post was unclear. It seemed you were referring to Gingerbread as 2.2.
so I guess your just saying that your happy enough with 2.1 with sense and not having 2.2 is no big loss? Ok I understand.
I really don't think it will be too long before Desire gets 2.2 anyway. Not like the HERO update. I think this will happen faster due to the promise of 10.1 Flash etc. I agree with you though about your comparison of 1.6 with sense having more than 2.1 vanilla android. I have used the Nexus one and I found it very plain compared to the Desire. I think Android is an excellent OS, but it really is like a scaffolding. The Sense widgets and UI make the experience in my opinion.

Fair point, i would personally hate not having Sense in exchange for being able to upgrade firmware a few days/week early.

But that is exactly the sort of attitude I'm questioning. You'd rather you didn't have Sense now (so in other words you would rather have not had the features Sense gave you) so that you could have those same features tomorrow? Despite the fact you;d been enjoying said features for weeks before?
Not what i'm saying, i said i would "hate not having sense" instead of being unable to upgrade a few days quicker. I don't mind having to wait, never said i did. But if it came down to never being able to upgrade firmware or keeping Sense, i would almost defiantly prefer a up-to-date and newer firmware which like you said might include feature we already had plus likely to include even more features and additions.
Ah yes...I misread.
Also, I wonder where this belief that the 2.2 update will hit phones next week comes from. The history of Android has shown the SDK is released first for devs and manufactures WELL before the OS ever hits a handset.

That's because the Nexus One can quite easily gain pretty much all of the features we have by flashing a Desire ROM.
There is only one real reason for Nexus One envy, and that is its unlocked bootloader.

I tried using a couple of different launchers recently, and I just couldn't live without the sense widgets. They're cool.
My only issue with sense is the dock at the bottom of the screen. Could be a lot more functional and less ugly... I really like the one in LauncherPro.
That said, if a 2.2 update is not forthcoming in a timely fashion I'll be ditching sense and flashing a custom rom.

And which Nexus One features have we not been able to get by similar means? I have voice search, we've striped out the 3D gallery and had a hacked Navigation app well before Google turned on the UK servers. Hence my belief the moaning about HTC is misplaced.
I just recently returned the Nexus One because -
1 - Didn't like the stock Android UI.
2 - The tactile buttons were not as great as having the hard buttons on the Desire.
3 - Sense UI IMHO is a lot better then having to flash ROMs.
4 - Bluetooth is a must for me.
5 - Immediately had some reboot problems out-of-the-box
If it came down to up-to-date software (FroYo 2.2) over Sense UI...I would chose Sense, but everyone has their preference.

For every man that uses the Desire ROM on his Nexus One, the nexus one users give in that the Desire is a superior overall experience (due to sense.)

Just by the way, has HTC ever released an updated official ROM with a new version of Android for any of its handsets?
for me, the nexus one is still superior to the desire.
only the ability to unlock the bootloader on the nexus beats all the advantages of the desire ( if it has any).
Seriously, i believe sense is a more polished UI but some are so useless. Examples are the messages and mail widgets. who actually reads sms and mails by swyping to the screens for the corresponding widgets . or do you actually click on the respective icon on the homescreen.
The extra ram on the desire shouldnt be taken into consideration as the bloated sense accounts for that.
For some of you who say that custom 2.2 will be there for desire before htc. well i kinda agree but i am also sure that most of them would be full of bugs. having the kernel source doesnt necessarily mean that porting the froyo would be a piece of cake!
and that too only if a stable root is achieved. Cause if things stays like how it is, i am sure that most of us will end up with the USB/SD..... brick problem. This is just a question of time.

Yes.
The G1 and the Magic got upgrades to 1. 6, and the Droid Eris and Sprint Hero upgrades to 2. 1 (with the GSM Hero coming June).

What's the use of this unlocked bootloader for most / average users?
Why is it a big deal for you?
About 2.2, I like the ability to run apps from SD Card ... Flash 10.1 is a nice bonus if the hardware acceleration works.

While the update is still about 3 to 4 weeks away, I want to make sure certain issues that have previously risen, don't happen on the Glide.
Firstly, If you are unlocked & have CWM installed, do not try to flash the update without first preparing yourself & your device. Updates on devices that have incorrectly made CWM versions that cannot be not overwritten have & will cause issues from simple black screen all the way to emergency dload mode.
to use official updates you need to relock your device & be using a correctly keyed AT&T rom.
My advice to you is to wait for a final OTA to be released & rooted & then sideload the update. ICS will however require a new boot section & possibly radio.
Once I have time, I will write a tutorial based on both my Vivid & SGS2 update experiences.
Until then be happy that you now own the only ICS slider so far.

Does this mean,, the Unlocked (Network Unlock)) has to be restored back the NETWORK LOCKED mode.??
Will the initial unlock key work later also ??
will this issue be more dramatic for the Canadian, Rogers Glide (I927R)? When it comes to Rogers, they really don't announce if an Android device will get (or not) an update...

I can't update OTA the updte from ATT. After the package gets downloaded to my phone my phones reboots and then it cancels the update.
Do you know if it is failing because my phone is rooted?

No, i bought it via wireless.amazon.com and shipped it to germany with borderlinx. All you need is a unlock code and everything works finde
I will release a rooted Version once it is released, so don't worry Canada & Germany! I love my Vivid, but the Glide has really surprised me with some of its nice media functions & overall responsiveness. It is also one of the few devices that will operate on the 5Ghz wireless-n band.
So far, only AT&T has announced plans for ICS on the Glide. Samsung told me the same.
As for lock & unlock, you always need to relock devices for OTA updates, but the one you are getting now is not ICS, just 2.3.6. I suggest skipping that one & waiting for the ICS build which will be here in roughly over 3-weeks. LTE devices are getting first run from AT&T.

Slight nitpick. The Sony Ericsson Xperia Pro has also been confirmed to be upgraded to ICS. Of course, its specs are somewhat worse than the Captivate Glide...
Just a question all this talk about ICS. Is ICS really that much better then Gingerbread. I mean I have seen the slick new interface but will it be better at handling opened apps and will battery life be better. I am just wondering if I should upgrade or since Gingerbread is working fine (If it ain't broke).

To me, being able to have a real in app spellchecker makes it more than worth updating. I hate typing emails on gingerbread because I am such a terrible speller. And I don't have time for all the copying and pasting from one app to another. Anyways hopes this helps.

In ICS Android itself makes better use of the hardware inside the phone. One of the big things in ICS is that Android itself starts using the GPU for graphics, where it used to pass that to the CPU. This means a far more optimised system overall, which should translate to better battery life.
Because the CPU has to do less to little of something it wasn't specifically built for. This should free the CPU up as the graphics load is now handled by the GPU. But it's unlikely that this freed up CPU-time will mean the CPU gets to sit there, idly. It will probably be used for something else. So that could mean that ICS uses the CPU equally to Gingerbread, and uses the GPU more than Gingerbread. This would mean a shorter battery life.
Going on the information I've got I'd say ICS will be a better system overall. But it still remains to be seen, time will really tell.

So we don't really know if battery life will be better or worse. I like that you mention that the GPU will be more efficiently used over gingerbread, but as you said only time will tell. Guess as always I will wait and see what others think of it once they install it and then see if I will upgrade. Thank you for your input.
Does anyone know if in the updates there will be vertical-landscape transitions? The lack of them on here makes me cringe! Is it Samsung enabled/can we reenable them?

Nobody knows when or even if KitKat will be released for this tablet. Samsung does not provide timelines, the only way we know is through leaks. There haven't been any to my knowledge.
I doubt we will get it since we didn't get 4.3. Last time I buy a Samsung tablet

I think you guys are being a bit melodramatic. You have a perfectly functional tablet that doesn't have any outwardly obvious bugs or other problems. I bet you use it with no problems. Sure, it's nice to have the latest update, but it's not like you have significantly outdated software that limits your usage of the tablet. And should 4.4 land on this tab (for the record, I think it will), you guys will be happy for all of about 5 minutes and move on with your day. And of course as soon as a new minor update drops, the *****fest will begin again.
I am running custom build 4.4.2 on my Galaxy S4. Outside of some UI tweaks and ART, it brings nothing significant to the table.

There are many reasons why HTC is failing, but if this is even a reason, it's an insignificant one. Samsung has never been truly up to date on updates, yet they are second only to Apple in the amount of high-end devices sold. Most people, myself included don't really care whether we are on the latest version. We just care that our devices perform well and do what we need them to do. I only complain if an update screws something up.
And lets be honest here: you are running the latest version of all of the Google Apps. It's not like you are stuck on Gingerbread and being on Jelly Bean does not limit you in any way. KitKat will not boost your battery life, will likely not make your device faster, and does not add any significant features that would make a difference in your usage of the device. So what's the real issue? Because it's not that you are unhappy with your tablet.

I wish that was the case but it's not. I'm on the AT&T variant, and I'm still on 4.1.2. I have screen freezes (real and documented) and battery life isn't great. With that said, I haven't piled on the *****fest. But no matter what, this device really needs to get upgraded. I blame AT&T more than Sammy, but there is no reason why I should still be on 4.1.2 with a device that was announced in June 2013 with absolutely no word on when we'll get an update (either to 4.2, 4.3, or KK). That's pretty shameful. And with no releases of any kinds of source code or device info, we have no unlocked bootloader or custom ROMs. So, I'm basically on 2013 hardware with 2012 code.

I fully understand your concern. I have the Wifi-only tab and am on 4.2. I did not experience your issues with 4.1 but I do know that others have. The thing is, problems have to get fixed, and it's a shame that you are still dealing with them. I don't know if it's AT&T or Samsung in your case that's at fault though. My point was more to the effect that I don't care for software updates just for the sake of having a slight bump in version number.

Agreed. I am on the At&t Note 8.0 variant also and I too have freezes and lag. With that being said I know that At&t and Samsung don't have the best business relationship dye At&t loyalty to Apple. So an update may or may not come. If it does let's hope that At&t don't block or rip it up like they do with all Samsung updates

I got wifi only and I get freezes. The way to unfreeze is to turn the orientation of the note to landscape from horizontal and vice versa. I really wish for an update to fix that. And Yes htc has tons of problems but I believe the slow ass updates were the biggest driver of their customers (at least those who root their devices) to Samsung. Those people are also quite influential with their peers on recommendations

I may not modify anything on the phone. However, I do have a question: Does OnePlus update their phones to the latest versions of Android often, regularly, or will she be lucky to see updates at all?

They are generally quite good regarding monthly security updates.
Regarding new android versions, it's not exactly the same. Oh, they will definitely update the OP3 to Android Nougat. Android O won't be out and you'll already have Nougat on your phone ! Amazing ! So fast ! :laugh:
Oneplus are certainly not the best regarding updates but they are probably not the worst.
Don't expect fast updates like Nexus.
Monthly updates are nice, if there're bugs , you may get 2-3 update per month. You surely get the Android N update, but with my experiences with OP1 and 2, you will have to wait 3-4 months after nexus, simply because you are running on a custom android- Oxygen( quite nice now) so they are worth waiting.
and remember you always have HUGE deverlop community here, OP forum &chinese forums( which you could have strange ROMs port ) , so dont afraid ,

The OP3 is a shift for them. I think they're potentially going to change the game up on their whole paradigm simply based on the success of this phone. The public and media seem to be pretty fond of the OP3 at present, and Oneplus will need to maintain that momentum and keep their client base happy. If they're smart, they'll push Android M no later than Q4 of this year.

Had it for close to 4 years now, and still find it difficult to get an upgrade. Tab S3 just doesn't seem worth the extra money - maybe S4 will.
The software is lollipop, but very functional and quite smooth after some debloating.
If it's a WiFi only model, there's a marshmallow touchwiz based rom by bonuzz which is highly rated.

Thank you for your answer from the specs, I think it should do the job for some drawings. And good to know that the software available doesn't really suck thanks
You won't find anything better below 200 or better 300€, especially with a digitizer, and 4G is also not too common in tablets. And there are current LOS and RR roms good enough to serve as daily driver. Seems still not to be an issue that the SoC is only 32bits.
It's a good device, yeah, but since officially it got stuck on Android L, it's definitely started to lose support in software on the Play Store. Seems developers are defaulting to Android 6.0 as the compatibility watershed now. However, if you're OK with aftermarket ROMs, that's not a problem.
