Question If i was to root my Z Fold 3, can you trick Android to thinking you have a different phone - Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3

So I've had a z fold 3 since release, when it first come out I read about rooting and it can mess up the Camera, I belive that's been addressed? however one of the biggest flaws with this phone is not bring able to create YouTube shorts!
As a content creator I need access to audio library via the YouTube app but foldong phones aren't supported for creating them.
If I decided to root, Is it possible to trick Android into thinking I have a different phone, to allow shorts to work? Or does it not work like this?
Just really need YouTube shorts to work otherwise might have to get rid of the phone. I imagine no1s figured out any work around to get it working legitimately yet, you can view shorts but not edit / upload them whilst using the audio library etc.

The short answer is no. The hardware will tell any software the model.

Okay thanks shame.
Really need to be able to create shorts, so might actually need to leave.
US samsung offering 1k trade in atm which is great for a s22 ultra.
Yet uk offering 600, not even close, so I'll wait.
Would love the fold 4, but if it doesn't work on the 3, it won't work on the 4 either lol

Do you mean, you can't install the Youtube Shorts App or does the app not support all functions as on non foldables phones?

EVO and DRM itunes video

Ok, I have been working on this since the EVO's launch. I am sure that there are lots of threads about this (I've read several) but I have never been able to get it to work. Basically I'm looking for someone to hold my hand.
I have all of my digital copies of Blu-Rays on itunes. The largest mobile device I had was a ipod touch and it made sense at the time.
I have tried several programs (handbreak, dvdfab, ect..) to remove drm. I can never get it to work. I need some help.
On a simi-side point. I know this isn't precentral but how on earth did Palm trick itunes into thinking a Pre was an ipod, and why can't a rooted evo do the same?
well idk how palm did the trick but if you want to go from -----------------------------------

I am not sure you will get the answer here since i think it would go against forum rules by giving you information to break DRM on these.
on the side note, i am sure eventually if it is possible our amazing devs will make it happen. I think a lot of focus is still on the ROMS but i am sure once 2.2 roms get to a point where they are fully functioning tweaked and stable we will see all sorts of stuff like this being played with.

Yeah, i wondered about that. I don't even want to break the DRM if I don't have too. I would rather trick itunes into thinking my Phone was an ipod. I do find it funny how all of these custom roms and apps with "donations" are kosher but we can't speak of DRM. Its like a paper bag law. Putting a video that i bought on a phone that I bought shouldn't be an issue.

I did some of my digital copies from Blu-Ray in Itunes format and some in Windows media player. Neither will play on the EVO no matter which program I try.
Aren't these LEGAL copies that we are supposed to watch on our device?

[Q] [IDEA] HDMI-out on AOSP rom?

Hello, I am not a developer and I am just looking for an answer to my question.
I know that there was released a google-edition of the S4 some time ago, which has the same HMDI-out (MHL2.0) as the Note 2 has. From what I have read about the google play-edition of the S4 you are still able to mirror your screen to the TV with the HDMI-out, which you are unable to do on the Note II if you use AOSP-roms. Since the Google Play Edition-phones are supposed to be open source just like google, I thought maybe the MHL2.0 driver was possible to port to other AOSP-roms on phones that uses the same MHL2.0-port as the S4... Which is the same Note II use!
This got me thinking and leads to my question:
(tl;dr)
Is there a way to use or port the HDMI-out driver from the S4 Google Play-edition and onto the Galaxy Note II's AOSP-Roms?
Please correct me if I've understood something wrong. I would be happy to get a proper answer.
(Currently using Paranoid Android-rom on Note II, and the only big flaw about this and every other AOSP-rom for the Note II is the lack of HDMI-out and Miracast.)
bump
Obviously Samsung gave Google the drivers. The *only* way we will ever see HDMI/MHL working on a non Samsung rom is one of three ways:
1) Someone with a sword of +10 to Autism Intensifies is able to reverse engineer every single protocol related to the signal coming out of the micro-USB port, and I am talking about someone with the ability to touch their tongue to the actual bared wires of a working MHL cable and from the taste tell you whether the movie being played is using AAC or 5.1 sound kinda thing. If there are a precious handful of clues in HOW various apps access and control this system, it is *possible* that a driver could be cobbled together to emulate the real thing. Will this happen? Probably not, there simply isn't enough interest.
2) A grass roots campaign is organized to beg, plead, threaten, abduct children of Samsung CEO's, do whatever it takes to get them to release the code for the drivers. This is unlikely but Samsung has begrudgingly helped with things like this before. Of course, we are also talking about a company that cheerfully has started putting e-fuses into their bootloader tripwires, so... Don't count on it.
3) A specialized unit of combined Ninjas and Belarus mercs storms the Samsung heaquarters and steals the source code for the drivers. There could be hostage situations, some mild torture to extract the pass-key to the RSA 32768 bit encrypted data center, military intervention and possibly airstrikes from American interests, North Korean EMP attacks when they get caught up in it... Still - doable.
Your other option is to simply keep a nicely fleshed out Touchwiz based rom nandroided away and just reload that for when you want to use your HDMI out the odd time.
I like #3 lol
But yeah... best to use a sammy based rom if you want that feature (can look here for them: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?key=0Apatc-TEE7sNdHVUbXBkOHI2X1FhTlBRb1BmTUdBQmc&output=html)
Done with it.
HTC is also guilty of this. My Sensation also has MHL out, but it won't work on AOSP (which frankly infuriates me). http://piloty.eu/samsung.html
Reflashing Touchwiz-based rom every time.. this would be a nightmare. I... I can't. No. Whole pile of nope.
Things like that make me sick of Samsung. I had pleasure of playing with Note 3 for few days, and now I'm done. My next device will be any open phone.

Did someone find a way to install a Custom ROM for the Fire Phone?

I stumbled across this website with instructions for installing a custom ROM on the Fire Phone. Can anyone confirm this? I'm only know enough to follow instructions.
I'm too new to post a link. Just Google:
custom ROM fire phone
You're looking for the nsme rom-lollipop.
It may be a scam. It asks you to complete offers to download the files. But, people in the article comments say it worked.
It's just ads / survey scam behind shortened links, as you said. The people in the comment section aren't "real", also just fake accounts used to make it look more legit.
Just remember the site layout and graphics, because the people behind this have dozens of domains registered, that lead to sites that look just like the one you found.
that's too bad. i just find it hard to believe we have a root method and no custom recovery/bootstrap. I remember when palm went under and had firesales on their phones and tablets. dev's crack it open and loaded android on them. this is a decent spec device and with all the cameras you'd think someone would eventually get some project tango features integrated.

Look at it from Amazons perspective: they want their devices to be (almost) closed plattforms. Providing a method of unlocking the bootloader for all their devices is not in their interest. (I'm not going to start discussing the HDX bootloader case ^^)
Yes, the device is decent, but there are so many alternatives. So as of now I highly doubt that anyone will be looking for an exploit or any possibility to unlock the bootloader.
i'm not worried about the locked bootloader. it doesn't have to be unlocked for custom roms, plenty of devices with locked bootloaders have custom roms. we have root so we should be able to have a bootstrap method. we're just lacking in dev support. i can't blame them at all, i'm just saying for about $100 device (if your already renewing prime) this is a pretty high spec device and has hella potential. wishing it had the support of the old palm's.
I'm also confused - Fire Phone is brutal device for current price. I was expecting much broader adoption after drastic price drop.

of course. but if no one adopts it, no one cracks the bootloader: its a catch-22. but again, everyone worries about the bootloader but that's not everything. with proper root we can have a bootstrap and custom roms which would be a million percent improvement... for example: every verizon galaxy since the s4...
this is my first fire device and thought "for the price, what the hell". turns out i absolutely hate fireos, haven't used the device at all until the latest update with root, google play, and a proper launcher.

huge pricing error in germany. many people got it for that price.
10 euros is an amazing deal. Really the price tag on this phone is amazing even at the non German price. So much so that I hope I get a chance to buy another one before they liquidate completely. Did some benchmarks and got performance better than the Galaxy s5 (as listed using vellamo) except for the single core test.
Anyway it seems to me that developers would adopt the phone, but it was also such a great flop that it might just continue to be neglected. I'm okay with that, but I would really like to see some development to replace some of the less functional bits of the fire os
It's too hard to get a custom ROM for Amazon fire phone.
1. The bootloader has been locked and no way to unlock.
2. We haven't found an available recovery for it.
3. We don't have the drivers of the phone.
4. Some software by amazon are used for the adaptation of the device, but we cannot make sure we can still use them in the new ROM. Such as the fix of the position of touch.
I agree, that's a bummer to not have dev support. No one wants to spend time developing for Fire OS and limit themselves to a small market niche when they can develop native Android apps and target 60%+ of the smartphone world. I bet so many cool things can be done with 5 front facing cameras, given development hours and diverse creativity input. Such a waste :/

I don't think "5 front facing cameras" is a good design.
Actually I disabled it immediately when I got my phone to save power.
It doesn't make sense.
5 front facing cameras
I am wondering if the camera system will ever be able to scan objects for 3D information, and send data to some 3D printer setup. Might be fun.

It seems the 4 cameras in the corners are "ultra-low-powered specialized cameras", so I guess they work just for the sake of the gimmicky Dynamic Perspective.
If it's like that, what a waste of cameras.
The 4 cameras and pseudo-3D was a gimmick, in hindsight it would've been better for amazon to do its own gearVR-like accessory instead given that eye-tracking doesn't come anywhere close to the quality of VR
Besides the VR market its nowhere near the saturation of mobile so amazon could've gotten its foot on the door rather than competing with android in that respect
As for the bootloader situation has anyone considered posting a reward to get more devs to try to unlock it?
There is (or was): http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-phone/help/bootloader-unlock-development-t3022030
And there was a change.org petition for Amazon to unlock the bootloader (I doubt they care): http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-phone/general/petition-posted-to-change-org-to-unlock-t3009342

AT&T Note 5 unable to root

glad I left too..
Had no desire to root my note 4, and have no desire to root the 5. Besides for some bloat (that can mostly be disabled), I don't see a need for it.

I won't buy a phone that cant' be rooted. I refuse to go back to having ads on the internet and deal with the samsung bloat.
Root, at least for the latest Generation of phones, in my personal opinion is a bit over rated. The phones run quite nicely, granted not the biggest fan of seeing Ads and the phones bloatware which I would love to strip out so I could recover some space. Still not the biggest deal breaker considering how well it works.
so, if your ATT was able to be rooted, are you saying you would not root it?
Package Disabler Pro app on Play Store will allow you to disable most apps and services.
Disabling the apps isn't the same as actually deleteing them. We all know that with root, when you debloat, the phone runs even smoother, more freed RAM and faster start ups. I hate not having root. I can live without an unlocked bootloader and having custom Kernels and ROMs but root is a need for me. I have so many root apps, xposed is always nice, Lucky Patcher is fun to have, DPI change is amazing for these big, high PPI displays and the main reason, debloat.
I'm sure the devs will figure something out. I have faith in them.

I agree. Will be taking this one off the list of phones I might upgrade to. Due to trade in my g3. Shopping now. I think I should just wait and see the new nexus devices.
the note 4 on ATT is still unrootable....
Android is becoming the same as the iPhone cat and mouse game. People are afraid and want more secure phones so carriers are locking stuff down. I'm all for unlocked devices, in fact I still have my Nexus 6 also but I can only imagine how many devices a carrier or manufacturer get returned because someone that doesn't know what they are doing is returned. We see it all day long on xda. Get a Nexus and swap between a locked phone when you want stable. If you feel like messing around hack your Nexus.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N920A using Tapatalk
"Android" is becoming like Apple? Google/Android does nothing to lock down the phones. That is the manufactuers and more importantly carriers that request it. You want someone to blame for this? Blame AT&T. Even Samsung phones with Knox are rootable out of the box, it just throws a permanent flag so that they know if you try to warranty it. The carriers are to blame for the phones being locked down and no one else.
This will be the worst forum for a phone yet!
Anyone thought about putting up a bounty? I could care less about a custom recovery but I REALLY miss root. Enough to put a few bucks into a pot for anyone who figures it out.

From what I understand we need firmware first with the "anti-root" buzzing around the phone would be disabled tell it came out making it almost pointless to try tell then. I got dm-variety verification failed and my phone wouldn't turn on just from a failed and upload from the sdk.

Nope the AT&T Note 4 forum has this beat....for now.
They have had a year to get it that way... Give this one some more time for the butthurt to settle in.
It is amazing how many tasker tasks I had that needed root... Oh well, it does have a nice camera...
I bought a international version in gold and couldn't be happier, no lock crap on it, flies on cricket which as we know is AT&T
Bought this phone. Now I am sad because no root. Maybe switch it with a LG G4.

What features are you going to miss, love or are concerned with when buying the Fold?

Without ever seeing the Fold in person and actually handling it I going to miss a few features based on the Specs I've read and videos I've watched. Here's my list.
Features I might miss:
1. Larger front facing screen...my caveat here is if the screen was larger it would probably be way too skinny anyway and would look really weird because of the dimensions..
2. Iris Scanner - love this feature on my N9. I know it's already gone on the S10's but it just works so well.
3. Update :MST for Samsung Pay is Probable for all phones. From what I've read, we're only getting NFC at least on AT&T but their website could be wrong since Samsung says it will have MST & AND NFC. That is always the beauty of Samsung Pay over various other Pay technologies. Worked just about everywhere for me.
4. MicroSD slot. OK, I might not use up the 512GB but do love the MicroSSD option which is great to easily move files and backups around., etc.
5. Waterproofing. I'm guessing that the Hinge is the problem and it would be difficult to waterproof the phone because of it.
6. The Fold would have been perfect if it had an S-Pen...with a selfie camera in the S-Pen (LOL!).
Features I'm not happy with (but I'll still live with):
1. That damn notch with a bezel on the big/inside screen. Almost made me bypass the pre-order. If that screen wasn't so large, I definitely would not have bought the phone. I swore I'd never buy a phone with a notch...Oh well.
2. (I know that this should probably be number one) The Crease! It remains to be seen but every video displays the crease in some manner. I find it funny that any article that I've read where Samsung has replied states that the crease is only seen in these **pre-production** models and the crease will not be seen on the final Fold versions. I'm not holding my breath on this one! So many reviewers stated that looking at the screen straight on and/or with a different wallpaper that the crease is barely visible or not visible at all. Now looking at the screen off to the side, the crease can be seen.
3. The batteries. They should have installed greater mAh capacity batteries. C'mon Samsung! You're using 2 separate batteries, give us more juice. You know we'll be on the 7.3" screen constantly!
4. I'm not really mad that they removed the headphone jack. I love options but 99% of the time I'm using BT headphones anyway.
5. The cameras. OK, we have LOTS of them! But for almost $2000.00 these cameras should have been even better than the S10/S10+'s cams. This Fold phone is Super Special and should have had a little bit more (can you say 10 X optical zoom? Might not have fit though).
6. I am still not fond of the Bixby functionality in comparison to Google Assistant. The Bixby routines are probably the best part of Bixby. I'll probably bypass Bixby.
7. Bixby button also being the fingerprint scanner. I'll lose my mind if I continually activate the Bixby button instead of unlocking my phone. That would make me crazy so I would use other software to disable Bixby altogether.
8. Many early articles on the Fold stated that Samsung would give us a free year of Samsung Premium Care+. I'm hoping that when I receive the Fold, I'll be surprised and find documentation to sign up for our free year. I'm probably dreaming...
9. They should have offered more for Trade-ins. Only up to $300.00 where it was $550.00 for the S10 possible trade-in values. (I'm kind of glad though since I may just need to keep my Note 9 around for awhile).
Unknowns:
1. It remains to be seen if the developers will build apps to work with continuity and sizing, etc. If that isn't done then we might own a $2000.00 boring paperweight. I need my Kustom suite of Apps and if they don't work, the Fold will be almost useless to me).
2. Will the Fold just be too long to easily fit in my pocket. I never put any phones in a back pocket but occasionally put in front pocket. Most of the time it's in a zippered pocket in a jacket or purse or backpack or small waist pack. I'm really not too worried..yet! Hahaha!
3. We definitely need a variety of cases. I'm sure they'll come. The interest in the Fold has seemingly surpassed Samsung's expectations. Samsung kept the final Fold design under wraps so long that I think that's one of the reasons the case makers haven't delivered yet (or they thought that the Fold wouldn't have much interest). I need a super protective Clear Case. I want to show off that Martian green with Gold Hinge!! (and I want to look at it too).
Final observations:
With all of the unknowns and possible negatives, don't get me wrong. I want the Fold!
I love being an early adopter and have saved up for this thing. I've been following Samsung over the years and drooling at all of their foldable prototypes.
With Samsung's track record on gorgeous displays, I know I'll love the tablet screen. I think that the small front screen is not a deal breaker because I liken it to my Lock/AOD screen where I glance at information then move on to the larger screen. It will be just one more step to fully open the Fold. Not inconvenient when you know what's coming! A huge, beautiful screen.
The COOL factor for the Fold is priceless! I am so anxious to get it and I know the feeling will continue as others spot the phone and want to check it out.
If the Fold ends up being a fantastic phone for me, then I'll be selling off a few other Tablets I have as well as my N9.
This is going to be Big! Cannot wait to play!

Based off of the limited amount of people that will buy and have this device probably not, but I could be wrong ?
I'll miss the spen even though I don't use it that often, but the main thing I'll miss about that functionality is being able to capture video as an animated gif (I don't know if this exists on the S series as I've only used Notes as far as Samsung's go). I'll probably use my old Wacom dumb capacitive stylus that's been sitting a drawer for a few years for the simple diagrams I draw in meetings using One note. It did the trick when I used to use an iPad all of the time.
The small screen might get irritating if I want to tap out a message as I already find it difficult using something as small as an iPhone SE. Although with keyboard customisation maybe bigger keys can make that easier.
The notch doesn't really bother me. A hole punch would be equally as distracting as a notch to me on a regular phone, but in a screen that big I can't see it being a problem.
I'm definitely changing the scaling and fitting more on that display. Apparently that's how you get many apps to use tablet mode rather than a big phone layout, so I'll be really happy if that's actually true. But I'd set my mind on getting one even before I heard about that so I won't mind if it doesn't work on everything.
I haven't seen whether Dex is available in tablet mode as it is on the larger Samsung tablets. That would be a killer app for me. I know we can use up to 3 apps, but it's not the same as having a few windows layered and tapping between them, especially if you're copying and pasting between a few documents and you want that bigger layout on each to see text placement properly. Maybe someone will manage to extract and develop an apk that doesn't require root for that.
With regards to the above, I used to have a Toshiba PDA that ran Windows Mobile and with it's 800x600 display you could change the screen scaling and achieve a similar effect. It was pretty great.
The thing I'm mainly looking forward to is reducing my travel kit from a phone, tablet, and kindle to just one device. Ok maybe not just one device, I'll have room for my Switch more often now. Airport security love giving my bags an extra search due to all of the gadgets I end up carrying, and hopefully this will mean I just sail through like most other people.
And while it may be an elitist prick move, I want people to notice it. Most friends and colleagues know I'm a tech geek, but nobody notices the tech anymore, as all of the phones and tablets look so similar. They don't realise it's something new or cool and don't ask. Plus, nowadays all it involves is showing off something a bit faster with more storage and a better camera. Nothing has done anything new for years now. This brings back that wow factor when new phones had something brand new and sparks conversation about the future again.
The US devices will have locked bootloaders just like the other US Samsung devices. Unless I've missed it there is no word on international devices yet. If you're like me and root is a necessity you might want to consider waiting until the situation is sorted out.
Edit... One other thing I ran into today in regards to a potential S-pen is that a reviewer was opining the screen was too soft to support writing. That was a stated opinion not a fact from Samsung. So a guess but not an unreasonable one; It isn't hard to imagine the screen not being able to hold up to a pen.

This would be great! I'm wondering if it's for Non US Folds. I'm hoping it's for everyone. I wish I had the eSim/nano sim option but not with my carrier (AT&T).
MST not listed in their specs but hopefully it's just incorrect. Thank you for the clarification.

I'm out of here. I'm a rooter and right now I'm now feeling the love with dropping 2k on this device and then killing the warranty. This isn't a complaint per se, it's just not the right tree to be sniffing around for those like me that will most def flog the thing. I do hope all who buy in enjoy the bejesus out of themselves. Good luck gents.

I was just reading AT&T version of the manual & no mention of MST, only NFC. THAT would be stupid to me & I'd really miss it.
