Question Help with Google Voice (Voicemail) on this device - Google Pixel 6 Pro

This used to work well on past devices but um not so much anymore lol.
All I'm looking to do is have Google Voice pick up my voicemails. I'm on Verizon and the part I'm not fully understanding is do I need a Google phone number to complete this action?
This used to work with just my basic cell phone number.
Any help would be appreciated

I honestly don't know the question to this, but I suspect people have to call you using your Google Voice phone number in order to be able to leave a voicemail. If you've signed up for Google Voice, then you have a Google Voice number, whether you're using it (or giving it out to others) or not.
It used to be you could select Google Voice as the voicemail provider in the Google Phone app. Then, several years ago when the Voice app v5 came out, I found we had to use a workaround to still be able to select Google Voice as the voicemail provider. At the time, you had to install the old Voice app v4.7, which you could then set up (sign into) and then select Voice as your voicemail provider, then you could upgrade the Voice app. As long as you never manually selected anything differently, the Phone app would visually show that nothing was your voicemail provider, but Voice would remain it.
Eventually, I found that I could no longer sign into the v4.7 Voice app on fresh setups and new devices, so it became impossible to set Voice as the voicemail app at all.
I know people still leave me voicemails successfully without this workaround, but I've given my Google Voice phone number out as my preferred number for the 11-12 years I've used Google Voice.
I'm always surprised Google doesn't kill Voice. I think they're waiting until everyone gets completely comfortable that they're not going to get rid of it, and then hit us when we least suspect.

I thought it was dead years ago when I couldn't get it working, but reviews show some people are having success with it.
From what I gather, I got to get a Google number. Set up a voicemail. Dial *72 (or something) with the new Google voice number to have calls forward from my cell phone to the Google number for it to go to G voice voicemail.
Technically this is a lot of work just to get a transcript of what's being said but that's the thing I miss the most

I'm a little confused. If you already have signed up for Google Voice, then you have a Google Voice phone number. On a computer or in Chrome on the phone, when you visit https://voice.google.com/, do you see your Google Voice phone number on the right? I've circled it in red near the top right where mine is displayed.
If you have the Google Voice website's window too small it won't show the right-hand side information, at least by default. You can also click the Gear icon at the top right above where your Google Voice phone number is displayed to set up Voicemail options. I used to use a personalized voicemail message, but now I use a default that Google provides since I have so many SPAM calls and I don't want it to give my name to them - although the Phone app automatically handles most SPAM for me, I'm including phone calls that I just don't want and lumping them in with calling them SPAM too.

I don't remember about this part. I might have, but since I don't experiment with flashing ROMs, or factory reset for any other reason, I just don't have to set mine up often enough to remember. I know it tells you what you need to do, but you could achieve the same thing if you're already signed up for Google Voice by wiping the Voice app's data and cache, launching it, and setting it up from scratch.

It's always been well worth it for me. I can't tell you the last time I've actually listened to a voicemail - except for some unwanted calls, just verifying the voicemail was blank since there was no transcription. I also have Google Voice email me the transcription as well.
I'm sure that Google's improved their transcription ability, too, as it used to be that I only had one or two particular family members who spoke more slowly, whose voicemails would be transcribed more accurately, but now even some others who didn't use to be, are more accurate now.
I mostly use Google Voice to be able to text from my computer. I know I can set Google Messages up to be able to text from my computer or use Microsoft's Your Phone, or whatever they're calling it now, to do the same I think, but I just prefer using Google Voice since I don't have to do any special setup in Windows for it or have any additional software running.

Nope no number. It gives me the option to request one. No problem. I just didn't need to do that in the past for this to work.
I see Verizon also offers visual voicemail. I can turn that on in phone settings but I can't find a Verizon Visual Voicemail app.
I don't know where the transcripts would be stored. I hope it's not on that stupid My Verizon app

The only number it shows linked to my Google voice account is my cell number. But that by itself does nothing. I wish after 3-4 rings In could just have Google voice take over. But that's not happening. Like you I used TB in the past to backup and restore so I don't remember what the proper procedure was either but I'm pretty sure it's changed

I see, thanks. I guess it's also been too long for me to remember that you could get Google Voice without a GV phone number.

^ I was just about to suggest the My Verizon app, but it also has been 5-6 years since I've used Verizon and I never used their Visual Voicemail. I have no idea if this Verizon Visual Voicemail FAQ is up to date. They say just use the app without telling where you get it from, so they assume it's already on the phone I guess:
How do I use Visual Voicemail on Android?
To use Visual Voicemail on your Android phone, open the Visual Voicemail app to view a list of your voicemails. You can play, delete and manage them in any order. If you would like to be able to read a transcription of each message on Android, subscribe to Premium Visual Voicemail.

Maybe this Verizon page will help since it has a "Get it now" button. I wouldn't hold my breath, though. I like keeping away from carrier-specific solutions, although in your case, if phone calls to your real cell number don't go to Google Voice voicemail even after you get a GV # and do any optional setup, then I suppose it will be easiest on everyone to use Verizon's solution unless you find it just doesn't work that well. I know others have sworn by it, from what I read over the years on XDA, but I swore by my 2008 Verizon flip phone's GPS service, which worked great for my purposes at the time.

Hopefully, I'm wrong and after you further setup GV the calls to your regular # go to GV voicemail, although it won't surprise me if that's not the case. So much changes with Google constantly, it's impossible to stay on top of every change that affects us - I deal with that at my work where we use Google for everything, and our small department deals with them much more than the average person at the company.

Well I think I'm up and running. Requested a Google voice number. Dialed *71 with the new number (for Verizon)
Google Voice picking up voicemails ever since.
Thanks Roirraw

[Q] Google Voice Voicemail Transcription

I have seen various people advise that using Google Voice for voicemail-to-text is better than the other web based or verizon paid services.
Has anyone done this and can they provide instructions on how to set up an Incredible to function as normal (using the REGULAR cell phone number; not GV), but which will have GV act for the voicemail and handle transcriptions?
Also, is there any cost to whatever the method is? In searching for this answer before posting, i saw an ancient LifeHacker article which talked about setting up the cell to do automatic call forwarding; but that there may be a cost for that.
Thanks!
First set up your GV account if you haven't yet.
Second add your cell phone # to your GV account.
Third, on the GV settings make GV your default voicemail service.
Now whenever someone calls your cell # they will get forwarded to your GV voicemail. Using the GV app you can check the transcription on your phone. When you are setting the app up be sure not use GV as your default dialer and that should take care of everything.
Thanks
So I take it the more exact steps are:
1) Log into Google Voice
2) Settings -> Voice Settings
3) Add your cell phone number
4) Go to VOICEMAIL and TEXT
5) Set up your outgoing message, name, and other settings
6) Go to PHONES
7) Click on "ACTIVATE VOICEMAIL ON THIS PHONE"
How can #7 possibly actually work?!? Its up to Verizon to know, not Google!
What does adding the GOOGLE VOICE app to the phone do in this process?
I don't know exactly why the #7 thing works but it does, undoubtedly its a common code for changing voicemail (think corporate voicemail). The google voice app allows you to see the transcription and hear the message without going to the gv website directly. It also alerts you when someone left a voicemail.
If memory serves, there is also somewhere you have to go in the phone to tell it to use GV. At some point in the process, there will be a prompt showing a sequence that you have to dial to complete the changeover... or it may just offer to do it for you... it's been a while.
EDIT: Be advised, the transcription SUUUUUCKS! It is, however, quite entertaining to read some of the attempts. That being said, my absolute favorite part is just being able to press a button and play the voicemail.
Hmmm

Google Voice routing bug

So I just got my GN, and it's pretty freakin awesome! One thing I noticed though is that if I swipe calls to the left to ignore, it sends them to my new voicemail on verizon as opposed to my GV. If I let it ring all the way through though, then it routes to GV. It's not a super big deal because I can just push the power button and ignore calls that way, but still...
Also, the messaging sends through regular texts, and not GV...this last part I had heard before, but in case anyone else didn't know that.
Here's hoping they update the GV app to take care of these things.
My voicemail routing works correctly, however you're right on the auto-reply texts. Even with Google Voice set as the default action for messaging, they still send via the stock app.

Are you on verizon?
I went through a hassle to get Google Voice setup correctly on this phone. Had to upgrade my Voice account to a full Google Voice number, instead of just a voicemail number. Doesn't really matter, since I'm only using the voicemail functionality of it, but still.
Go to the phone and call *71 and your number (so *718001112222 if your GV number was 800-111-2222) and it'll set the call forwarding up correctly. Just have to make sure it's a *FULL* Google Voice number (can be done on the website - voice.google.com)

Yes, I am on Verizon. I use a full Google Voice account for calls, voicemails, and texts, and have call screening services turned off. I now use it on Galaxy Nexus and a Galaxy Tab 10.1; it's a wonderful setup.
On a side note, I did not have to call the routing number to set up my Voicemail forwarding. I simply selected "ok" both times during the Android setup process, ignoring the warnings about "incompatibility."
You should double-check your settings: https://www.google.com/voice#phones

My send to Google voicemail is working correctly when I dismiss a call, but the text messaging option still tries to use the built in messaging app even though I disabled it.
Anyone know a way to force it to use Google Voice for text messaging?
Thanks for suggestions everyone. Just did the *71 thing and will check to see if it worked when I get to work.
Not sure what you mean by full gv account... I use it for everything, so I'm assuming I am on full.
I also pushed OK and ignored the incompatible warning, but that didn't work last night... Maybe because of 4.0.2? Either way, hopefully im fixed now.

Edit: Just checked, the *71 plus the GV number did the trick. Thanks again everyone.

Problems with google voice on CM7 Droid Incredible

My gf's phone has been having some issues with google voice for awhile now. She's always wanted the stock incredible VVM back, but no one's ever been able to find it on other forums. If anyone has the stock VVM for the phone, I think she would like that better.
If not...
Her issue is that whenever someone calls her phone it always has different responses. Some people call and say the number is unavailable, others say it asks for her subscriber number. I've called three times now and i've had those two errors along with one that actually got through. The problem is that she isn't receiving all her calls, which anyone on this forum can attest that this is a MAJOR issue, especially while she hunts for jobs. If ANYONE can figure out a solution to this problem it would be awesome. I've searched the web for weeks trying to find a solution or even an alternate VVM, but I haven't had any luck.
I just need to figure out one of the following:
- how to get back stock Incredible VVM
- how to fix or permanently get rid of google voice
- find an alternative VVM that works decently and can get past this google voice issue.
Any help would be appreciated...
Phone is Verizon Droid Incredible running CM7 version 7.0.3-inc
What are her Google Voice settings set to? Open GV and navigate to: Menu/More/Making Calls? This setting should be set to "Do not use GV to make calls." I've been using it for about a year and across different roms with absolutely no problem, so this is a surprise to me.
To remove Google Voice (no don't do it, stop...aight I'm done):
If you want to remove GV, sign into her Google account from a computer, along the black Google title bar click on "More" then select GV from the list of Google services. Now, click the gear icon below your account name and there is a "deactivate Google Voicemail on this phone" link in blue. Once you deactivate Google Voice, your Verizon voicemail should be working. I haven't personally done this, cuz I actively use GV. I believe your Verizon voicemail is *86 if you want to access it over the phone. If you want, call Verizon to ensure the second phone (the GV account) number is disconnected from the account as well. Last step requires you to call and test her voicemail to make sure they come through.
P.s. Doesn't every rom include Voicemail Settings under Settings/Call? Does changing your settings there fail as well?

thanks that got rid of it. i also found how to set it back to the carrier voicemail like you said. i like google voice, but that problem not being able to receive calls 50% of the time just kills the functionality of a phone almost. i wish i knew the deeper problem of it so i could make it fully functional. thanks though, this fix will work for now.
Not a problem, sucks that you had that issue arise. Glad I could help.

Google Voice Question

Currently I have a google voice number and a regular Sprint number, I know when you create your google voice number you can do the integration where Google will use your current Sprint number, which sounds cool in theory, but I heard a lot of issues with doing this, the main one, not getting MMS anymore, and some missed VMs etc...
My question is, when I install the Google Voice app on the phone there is some option asking about integration, from the sounds of it, it seems like this is different than Google taking over your current number. Ideally what I want is to still have two different numbers, but I would like my Sprint number -and- my Google Voice number to both use the Google Voice Voicemail service. This is to work around some AOKP / AOSP issues with Sprint Visual Voicemail app that I've had.
So is this possible? Is this what that install option on the phone does? Once I do the integration can you unlink it?
I'm not sure about the setup you desire, but I think for Google Voice to handle voicemail for your Sprint number, you are going to need to do the integration.
I integrated shortly after the option became available. Google Voice itself will not handle MMS messages, but you will still receive them on the phone -- just not in the GV app. That works fine for me. I haven't had any issues with missing voicemails or otherwise.
Once you do the integration, you have a period of time to decide whether to keep it or not. After that time expires, your old Google Voice number is removed. I think that's 90 days.

Yes it is and this is my setup. Install the app and when you are setting it up it will ask you if you want to integrate, you will press next if so. If not and just want the regular google voice setup just press skip. Do this, press skip. Then link your google account, setup which calls you want google voice to handle and then finish..you're done.
Thanks ... I set it up and deleted the Sprint VVM app, don't have a way to test it though, tried calling my phone with google voice, but the phone doesn't ring, I'm guessing that's because I'm trying to call the phone GV is set to forward too... Oh well, looks like I'll just wait till someone calls

You actually want to SKIP integration.
I have mine setup so that you can call my google voice # or Sprint # and both ring on my phone.
If you integrate (during the app setup) you turn your Sprint number into your GV #.
To fix this you need to login to google voice and there is a setting to (basically un-link) the GV # from your sprint #.
Uninstall and reinstall the app on the phone, this time skip integration.
Hope this helps.
if you want to keep google voice number and your sprint number separate than when you set up the google voice app skip the first option and voice mail integration and just get the text and call forwarded to your phone via gV..I like to keep them separate to keep business from personal

[Q] Google Voice and the Note 2

I am having issues with getting Google Voice to be the Voice mail provider on my T-Mobile Note 2. I searched and did not see any threads in the T-mobile section for the Note 2. I went through the setup after installing the Google Voice app and it said that it was set up. I know it worked for the first day because I got a voicemail that showed up in the Google Voice app and a notification like I was supposed to. Now when I call my phone I am only getting the T-Mobile voicemail. I have only had the phone since the 2nd.
Elsewhere on the net I found that some Verizon and Sprint Note 2 owners are having a similar problem but not any T-Mobile users. I followed the suggestions in this post (which I can not link to because I have not made enough posts, google: note 2 google voicemail it will be the first result) to try and get it to work but found that it only works if you reject the call with a message. I am wondering why the manufactures ROM's never work. I had less problems with CM10 nightlies on my T989 SGS2.
I would appreciate anyones input since I use the Google Voice number for my company and it is the only number we have. I don't get many work calls, 5 or 6 a year but I still want to be sure my clients get the right message or even me when they call.
It works fine here. Just tested it.
If the Voice app doesn't set it up properly, you can do it manually by dialing the following string directly on the phone:
*004*1XXXXXXXXXX#
The Xs represent your phone number of voicemail number.
If you log on to Google Voice on the web, go to settings, there's a link right to the right of the phone listing that pops up instructions for your carrier.

Be aware that you cannot use google voice as your voicemail if you are on a monthly 4G - no contract - plan.
I already went through the process of doing the ##004# to de-activate the Google Voice forwarding to my phone and then reactivated it with *004*1XXXXXXXXXX# but still had no luck with getting it to work. T-Mobile voice mail picks up no matter what. I went through the settings online for Google Voice also but found nothing. It has been working with my 4 other Android Phone sin the past on T-Mobile, all rooted and flashed with different ROM's almost weekly.
I am on a contract plan with T-Mobile so I don't think that should be an issue.
Thanks for the input.
With the Verizon and Sprint versions of the Note this seems to be a problem for more users than here on T-Mobile.
Go to Phone > Call Settings > Call Forwarding > Voice call > and change "Forward when busy" "Forward when unanswered" "Forward when unreachable" to your google voice number +1xxxxxxxxxx
Also make sure Voicemail service in Call Settings say Google Voice.

I have done all of that. I checked and doubled checked that all of those settings are correct.
I found that I can force it to go to the google voicemail if I select a quick response message when someone calls ie. I am driving now. This only works if someone calls the T-Mobile number though, not the Google Voice number.
My phone is just not forwarding to my google voice number like the settings are telling it to do. All the settings say it is but in practice it is not.

I have done all of that. I checked and doubled checked that all of those settings are correct.
I found that I can force it to go to the google voicemail if I select a quick response message when someone calls ie. I am driving now. This only works if someone calls the T-Mobile number though, not the Google Voice number.

I had the same problem as you, but I saw forwarding wasn't setup properly even when it said Google Voice as Voicemail service, but I changed it to gv number in forwarding it works like a charm.
Don't know what else to say. Sucks that it doesn't work for you.
The call forwarding settings and yes it is the right phone number.

Same happened to me, fixed by logging into Google voice account via website to enable setup/settings, don't know why I had to go through that since it was set up already from previous phone, but this fixed issue
I will have to mess with it again today. I am surprised it is having an issue.
I am going to disable and reset it all today and then reinstall. Hopefully that will fix what ever my bug is. If not it might be time to root, never have these kind of problems when I control my destiny.

I was having the same exact issues with you and I tried everything that was suggested in this thread in various order with no luck. Then I tried it in this order and for some reason it worked:
Deactivate Google Voice on phone by pressing ##004#
Uninstall Google Voice app
Activate Google Voice on phone by pressing *004*1XXXXXXXXXX#
Install Google Voice app
Best of luck man, hope it works for you too!

NP I'm glad it worked!
The x's represent my phone number, right.... not Googe voice number? If so, how would I find my Google Voice number. Same problem here.

The x's represent your google voice number. Go to your Google voice account with a browser to find your number. It is listed in the settings.
It is slso listed in the Google voice app in settings. At the bottom it says my Google voice number.

I'll have to go to the site. My app doesn't show my number. Thanks though, I'll give it a try.

yea, but the question is, how long will it work? I set it up on my phone, 2 days later it didn't work, did it again, a week or so later, yesterday actually, it didn't work again. I signed out of google voice, went back in, configured again, did the deactivate voicemail, reactivate voice mail and nothing.
finally went to the call settings part for forwarding and typed thenumber in manually. I did notice at least for me that the number listed on google voice is not the number you type in there, you must type in the number on google voice that starts with 004.
its working again now, but for how long is the question. really bizarre.
That is what I am wondering also. The other forums said the same thing that it comes and goes. The first day I got the phone I set up Google voice and it worked for 2 days. Then it stopped and I started this thread to see who else was having the same problem and how to get it to work again.
We will see.
