How different is the newest alpha 4 version compared to the one referenced at:
http://code.google.com/p/epiccm/issues/detail?id=33#c9
I installed the linked version a couple days ago after being asked to test to see if the ring of death was fixed.
I guess Im just wanting to know if there's anything major and any reason to flash this versus the one I currently have.
The change log is linked in the OP of the CM9 thread.... try looking there before posting threads like this.....

Edit: just in case you don't know how to click a link here's the change log......
Changelog
CM9 alpha4 Sunday, February 19th, 2012
Fixed the much hated Ringing of Death bug. This was the short chirp before the ringtone, or constant ringtone that would play during or after an incoming call.
Fixed ICS multitouch protocol in qt602240 driver. This should make it possible to play certain multitouch games like Dead Space™. It also fixes the touchscreen driver with CWM 5.8+ (not released by koush yet).
LED notifications have been changed to enable significant power savings. LED notification has been changed to blink every 15 seconds, roughly matching the delay in Samsung's EL30. This alone eliminates ~71% wakelocks, while previously the CPU was unable to sleep at all while the notification LED is blinking.
LED notifications may be turned off entirely for additional power savings. Settings > Display > Pulse notification light. This allows you to continue to hear the notification chime and vibration without the added battery drain of LED blinking.
Adjusted heap settings to match crespo. This is very similar to a popular tweak in the forums. It prevents some Out of Memory crashes (i.e. NPR News). You can use these three lines in /system/build.prop to benefit from this tweak prior to alpha4.
dalvik.vm.heapstartsize=5m
dalvik.vm.heapgrowthlimit=48m
dalvik.vm.heapsize=128m
Dialer will no longer lockup in rare occasions.
Numeric battery % indicator now works!
CM9 alpha3 Monday, February 13th, 2012
Battery Related
Fix automatic brightness setting. In alpha2 you could save power by turning off automatic brightness and manually reducing brightness. This is fixed by updating the array values for brightness levels to match CM7 and stock. This reduces wasted power and hot screens reported by some users.
Capacitive buttons backlights (Menu, Home, Back, Search) now mimic TW behavior by turning off the backlight after a 6 second timeout. This both saves battery and improves the user experience in darkness.
Fix the power profile. Previously battery usage blame percentages were less accurate.
LED charging indicator no longer turns off after you dismiss a notification.
Switched to crespo kernel audio driver. The kernel audio driver (wm8994) now matches the userspace driver (libaudio) we added in alpha2. Should hopefully resolve speakerphone mic issues.
Voicemail default number is set to your phone number and not *86 by default on new installs.
MMS now shows profile faces.
Fix roaming bug. Prior to alpha 3 opening Mobile Networks settings unintentionally disabled roaming. Folks upgrading from alpha2 should open System settings and ensure Auto: Domestic Roaming is selected to enable roaming support.
Added roaming options. Alpha3 includes domestic, international, both, and no roaming options as found in gingerbread TW ROMs.
Fixed the annoying "Data usage warning" that was previously impossible to dismiss from the notification window.
Removed Chinese and Japanese IME. Install the better IME's from Android Market if you need Asian language input.
CM9 alpha2 Tuesday, February 7th, 2012
With alpha-2 and all future versions of CM9, you will no longer need to update gapps after every upgrade. It is highly recommended that you upgrade to the new gapps-ics-20120201. This new gapps-ics has the face unlock split into a separate .zip because it is rather large and not very useful with our low resolution front camera.
4G WiMax curtain toggle. If it doesn't appear automatically, you may need to manually configure it in Settings > System > Notification drawer > Widget buttons > Toggle WiMAX.
Video recording longer than 1:45min retains A/V sync.
"Call has been lost." popup no longer occurs on a far-end call hangup.
libaudio ported from crespo (Nexus S), resolves audio distortion during phone calls and improves Bluetooth audio quality.
Re-enable SEC_ADJUST_LMK in kernel to fix the low memory killer. There was a problem where kswapd0 went crazy needlessly consuming cpu, killing performance and wasting battery.
Manual brightness setting slider now works.
Changing camera resolution no longer crashes the camera app.
CM9 alpha1 Tuesday, January 31st, 2012
Location services - it was causing the CPU to spin for a long time wasting power.
Soft Keyboard dismiss when slider is open.
CWM scrolling

Initial release

I did read the changelog, but was unsure of how many of these updates were included in the test release that came out after alpha 3 but before alpha 4. If the hassle of flashing/setting back up doesn't outweigh the benefits, I may just wait till alpha 5

I believe the test build you're referring to contained only the ring fix and heap size adjustments as additions to alpha3. So all the other changes in alpha4 (multitouch, LED stuff, etc.) are new.
Alpha4 also includes a fairly significant number of changes to core CM9 that were recently mass commited from gerrit, many of which we didn't specifically enumerate in the changelog.
Personally I would update to alpha4. Both alpha3 and that test build are battery unfriendly when you have an unacknowledged notification (blinking LED).
The latest update of 2021 is rolling out today with the Android 12 December security patch for the Pixel 3a, Pixel 4, Pixel 4a, Pixel 4a 5G, Pixel 5, Pixel 5a, Pixel 6, and Pixel 6 Pro.
In the most recent Android Security & Privacy Year in Review, Google notes that “no critical security vulnerabilities affecting the Android platform were publicly disclosed without a security update or mitigation available for Android devices.” Additionally, there was an 84% year-over-year jump in security patches during Q4 2018 compared to the prior year.
Besides the December Feature Drop, this update widely rolls out improvements to the Pixel 6’s under-display fingerprint sensor that were first introduced last month in the US and Japan. There is no update for the Pixel 3/XL this month, with the next release coming sometime in the first quarter of 2022.
The Pixel 6 update will be available next week.

Usually by installing the new firmware, sometimes it also takes specific app updates through Google Playstore, not every new "feature" from a "feature drop" is bound/connected to the firmware as such.

Those international P6 / P6P users are gonna be very upset since they were waiting on the mid Nov patch and didn't get it. Now they wait even further for the FPR updates. Not a great look from Google.
Yep, that makes sense, the phone that is affected by the most issues gets the update last.

Classic Google.
Also don't forget the outside US/Japan users still do not have the absolutely essential Fingerprint fix, so they'll now have to wait for roughly 1 1/2 months after release for that important bugfix.
Android 12 was postponed, Pixel 6 reveal got postponed, the first essential bug fix firmware gets postponed...
Not impressed, Google. Not impressed.
So many issues they need another week to try to correct them lmao. Maybe if their internal testers actually tested things before releasing a half baked OS and phones they wouldn't have so many bugs to fix.
I installed the update manually and the fingerprint sensor still sucks big time. I have an iPad with a build in fingerprint sensor and it reads almost every time on the first try and I only taught every finger once. On my Pixel I taught them twice and it still misses it every other try.

No need for that if you have a big community testing your beta phone firmwares for free, even though Google ignored most bug reports, lol. There is still a heckload of stuff going wrong that was present in the first Beta.
Ahh, just another week of crappy reception - today's highlight: 4G+ full reception with an exclamation mark even after reboot. It's already gotten to the point where I even expect to have no reception when I need my phone on the way. I regret not having returned it.

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully the new firmware will fix these issues for you.
It's a shame that companies release a thousand dollar product, yet it still fails to use the most basic of features without problem. Even if it only affects a portion of the userbase... shouldn't have happened in the first place.
Reception, call quality... I mean, damnit. This is a PHONE. It's DESIGNED to make a CALL. To CONNECT to the INTERNET: And if that is not possible without difficulty... omega uff.
I don't think I've EVER seen so many fixes. Oy vey. Just shows how buggy A12 and the p6's are...
I don't know about any of you, but I'm fairly ticked that we have to wait another week for an update. I've had it with this damn FPR. It works great right after redoing the prints, then after a while it will go from working most of the time to me having to use my other thumb or the passcode. I was really hoping for a big fix today... Also, my battery getting hot during chrome use and some other situations, and the bad battery life...
I've also about had it with Google. A12 has been sooo buggy, and to be honest, material you is kind of a joke. 4 whole colors to choose from, two of which are AWFUL, no font, no icons, not very material YOU. I've actually been keeping an eye on the Samsung s22 launch. I never thought I'd ever own another Samsung phone, but I'm close. The s21 got A12 less than a month from the pixel launch, so, it doesn't seem like I'd have to wait 6 months for OS updates, and, they have a theme store. So, you can actually make it yours lol. Ugh...

Same here. Doing some gig work right now and lost a very good order due to phone dropping data. I should have return mine as well.

I forgot about this. I rarely seem to have full bars, 5G, LTE, whatever. At my house I get one bar... My 4xl had full bars. Pretty much everywhere I had full or almost. I too, regret not returning this phone. If I hadn't gave my mom my 4xl right away, I would have. We'll see if Google actually fixes this BS. If not, I'm sure Sammy will give me most of my money back for a trade for an S22.

Yep..... material you is hideous. Love how it changes the hue of the greys instead of just the accent color. Thought I wouldn't say it either, this will be the last Google phone for me. Can't wait to get rid of it.

Back in the day, Pixel firmware updates never had these many fixes - it's a shame, and quite frankly, pathetic, that Google released Android 12 - after a 3/4 year of public beta testing ! - in an obviously broken state.
And jea, I can only agree with your assessment with Material You. We lost a lot of customization and are now forced to endure a UI that was made for an 80 year old colour-blind, requiring moon-sized letters, widgets and unicolor-backgrounds across the board.
If I could, I would immediately return the entire UI to Android 11 - that one was beautiful and just worked. I see no advantage in Android 12. It's the first Android update - in my Android phone owning years - that felt like an actual downgrade, instead of an upgrade.

Sideloaded the update myself but for those not prepared to do that it's been a long stretch to wait for the FPR fix Google saw fit to issue to their 'important markets'.
