Hi guys ☺,
I bought today G4 eu model,it came with Marshmallow 6.0 V20d version.
I want to root it because of Greenify and Xposed,to increase the battery time,maybe later to flash some rom but...
There is a lot of topics on this subject,I started to read but I'm lost right now...as far as I saw,I can't root Marshmallow without unlocking the bootloader,only Lollipop,right?
Is it a big trouble to go back from MM to LP?
I'm not new in this flashing and rooting stuff,I had (still have) a Motorola Razr XT910,I flashed it 100 times for sure for 3.5 years but I didn't had to unlock the bootloader (it's impossible anyway) and there's a custom recovery Safestrap,modified Twrp which allows to flash and use 6 different roms,from JB to MM,without changing the kernel...
I will be grateful if someone can point me in the right direction,to give me some useful links etc.
And is there some list which procesess are safe to freeze with TB and which ones I can greenify?
Oh,and the bloatware too...

Hi,
root without unlocking bootloader works only on lollipop, right. Not sure if u can downgrade, but when, u will use "LGUP" tool with the "H81510D.kdz" file. Maybe there exists a pre-rooted kdz to flash.
If u want to root android 6, u need a unlocked bootloader. Rooted Android 5.1.1 or unlock bootloader with rooted android 6.x.x

In my case I wasn't able to flash recovery on the stock kernel, I had to flash boot.img unpacked from the custom kernel like SimpleGX and only then I was able to flash recovery and full kernel through it.

the method i followed was-
1. boot into twrp recovery with adb command(you need to have the twrp.img file in PC and also copy it in internal memory of your phone with SU)
2. flash systemless root with twrp
3. reboot
4. install flashify
5.flash twrp.img from your phone.
6. done
but there aren't as much benefits of rooting as any other phone. viper4android doesn't work. spirit fm doesn't work. xposed doesn't work properly.(these 3 were the main reasons for which i rooted)

I didn't know i could flash something other than .zip files with twrp.
As for viper4android i tried normal way, flashed it with twrp, flashed extreme music mod with v4a fix. None seem to work. The drivers never get installed.
Xposed i haven't tried. I was in process of getting more information about it by reading various threads. But all seem to point to problems like bootloop, fc and Bluetooth issues. Can you guide me towards the best version of xposed for v20d with way to avoid problems or with as less problems as possible?

Download XposedInstaller_3.0_alpha4.apk and install it.

Flash Imperium Kernel or SimpleGX Kernel. I used their kernels and ROMS on my older phones, they are legend. I suggest you to flash Imperium Rom. It includes kernel and everything and it is updated regularly by its dev.

As you have you bootloader unlocked, you can root your h815 M6 V20d with this method.

and now my g4 is rooted

I think doesn't need to install recovery to root the phone.
Just this:
1) adb reboot bootloader
2) fastboot boot TWRP-2-8.7.0-h815.img
Wait a second and it will open, on the phone, the recovery.
Once open go to Advanced -> ADB sideload and take a swipe to start it where it says "Swipe to Start sideload".
Now on the PC write
3) adb sideload BETA-SuperSU-v2.67-20160121175247.zip
( If it says after the instalation to install supersu etc just abort it)
And then, when installation is complete, press "Reboot System"
I rooted it this way, without install TWRP Recovery

Yeah - but the question has to be asked - why unlock the bootloader and root and not install TWRP? If you've got as far as unlocking the bootloader you might as well make life easier for yourself and install TWRP - that way anything you want to flash in the future can be done without being tethered to the PC, and also allows you to take proper full system image backups etc.

Of course , i agree with you. By the way, we can't root g4 on m6 without unlocked bootloader.
And finally, i decided to pass twrp on my phone, for every file i want to install from twrp, and not every time to boot from pc

I don't really need a custom recovery (I don't know of any features custom recovery will give me I really need?) and for now I'm fine running stock roms (I always give stock a few weeks just as a baseline before I start custom roms) but I was wondering, how would one go about rooting the OP3 without installing a custom recovery?
Is it possible / easily doable? Or am I better off just to flash some custom recovery and ditch the stock one?
The reason I don't want to go away from stock just yet is I know oneplus is still updating the rom and custom recoveries, historically, have made OTA updates problematic.
Rooting will also mess up Ota too, but if u install a custom recovery, now that we have stock recovery it will be very easy to revert back for OTAs, there should be a way to root without a custom recovery but I am not sure how though, but with how oneplus makes it so easy to unlock bootloader and flash customers stuff there is really no need to stay stock
You can simply connect your OP3 to a PC and boot to TWRP without flashing it:
fastboot boot twrp.img
Then do a backup with twrp before rooting. I use the above method with systemless root
and also don't really need a custom recovery at this point. This might change once CM13 matures on the OP3...
OTAs might work this way in the future. If they don't, restore your system + boot (kernel) partition
and try the OTA again.

As far as I know, you'd have to have TWRP to get root.
I don't think getting it rooted will mess up the OTA updates, other users sprovide flashable zips for the OTA anyway.. so you can still flash the zips manually with TWRP to keep you updated.

To get root yes, you would need TWRP to flash to certain partitions but to keep root no. Your phone will operate just fine with root and stock recovery. Check what the user a few posts above mine said about temporary flashing TWRP to achieve your short term goals

Yes, I have the stock recovery and it is rooted.
The recovery partition has nothing to do with all the other partitions except that it can read and write them.
This is the zip I flashed to get systemless root:

Some users reported that some Root-apps are not supported this way.
I am using Titanium Backup, Adaway, Trimmer and Root Explorer without issues.
Keep in mind that I did not get any OTA so far since running this setup, so I am not sure if official OTAs will or will not work.
All I did was manually flash OxygenOS 3.1.3 in TWRP (not flashed but booted) and reflash the root package afterwards.

I have an unlocked bootloader and tried this on my PC:
C:\adb>fastboot boot twrp.img
downloading 'boot.img'...
OKAY [ 0.709s]
booting...
OKAY [ 0.373s]
finished. total time: 1.092s
Nothing happens, bootloader start screen stays frozen. Until I hold down the power button. Might you know why?

i tried to boot into twrp recovery with above command, but the phone seems to be stuck in the bootloader and not responding. Any ideas?

Thanks, that twrp img worked for me. The one I was using didnt allow me to boot to it.

I really like the Op3 and dont wont to change anything except i would like to habe root access. Your method seems to be the best way to achieve that.

The updater will recognize root on your device and download the full 1.3 gb Rom file.
But after updating root will be gone, so you will have to reflash root after each ota.

Just to make sure, if I root using this method nothing will change, except I have root access, my bootloader is unlocked and the updates will be big, but I can update the normal way, I will just lose the root access? Is that correct or am I missing something?

One more thing:
If you have TWRP, automatically installing the big OTA will remove it and go back to the stock recovery.
I always manually move the downloaded ota from android/data/com.oneplus.ota/files/.OnePlusOta
to my download folder, boot into TWRP and flash it + SuperSU on my own.

So you have TWRP installed? I thought you won't get OTAs if you have a custom recovery? So i could just flash TWRP and root and still get OTAs?

Yes, OTAs will come and because of Root you will get the full OTA regardless, which does not cause any issues with TWRP.
I tried my previous method and the regular OTA would fail because of root which changes the kernel or the system partition.
OnePlus reacted to this and introduced the full rom OTAs at some point.
So with root on my device this is how I do OTAs now:
- get the OTA notification for the full rom
- download but don't install
- move the downloaded zip from android/data/com.oneplus.ota/files/.OnePlusOta to my download folder
- manually boot into twrp and flash full rom zip + SuperSU

If you read the screen properly ull see the instructions on the screen itself do everything the same way you unlock the bootloader just instead of oem bootloader unlock type oem bootloader lock ...but make sure you're on stock rom and recovery

But then My root access will be wiped??
I want root access and dont want than annoying screen
two questions different answer but I would bet if there is a way to remove nag screen a google search would find it. Keep searching threads
there is no reason to re-lock bootloader, its still under warranty through Oneplus even with unlocked bootloader. but if u really want to
1. fastboot flash stock recovery (fastboot flash recovery recovery.img) (make sure u download the file, its somewhere here on the forums
2. reboot and then reboot to fastboot (fastboot oem lock) (i have never re locked a bootloader so i am not sure if it will rewipe ur device again like unlocking it does)
3. boot to OS and get developer options again and uncheck OEM Unlock (do this last)
i would not recommend re locking since it wont void warranty and seemed like a lot people screwed up their devices relocking it, but they also unchecked the oem unlock before flashing stock recovery, also i am not sure if step 2 is needed, i would just make sure u flash stock recovery 1st before doing anything

What happens if i follow same steps with installed FREEDOM OS on my oneplus 3. You said make sure you are in stock OS.
Once i have unlocked the phn my device doesn't get recognised by the pc when i use command" fastboot devices".. Now, i'm unable to flash twrp, plz solve my issue.!!!

What part of be on stock OS is so hard to understand?
If you're not absolutely stock when relocking, you will brick your device.
Then good luck trying to enable OEM Unlocking when not being able to boot.
As someone who messes with their phone, relocking your bootloader is one of the worst possible things you can do.
If not done correctly, it WILL brick your device.
If you want to go back to stock, then surely do, there is absolutely no need to relock your boot loader unless you're selling your device to someone or if you're looking to pass SafetyNet for Android Pay or something.
Also, you cannot have the cake as well as eat it. You need to have an unlocked boot loader for root, exposed, etc. There is no way around this.
Phones previously had to be reverse engineered and exploited to gain root access, now OEMs freely allow unlocking.

I hope you can read this. I'm not a noob and I am looking to relock my bootloader because I am going to sell it. The person wants it fully stock so I need to relock the bootloader in order to regain access to official Ota updates.
I need to be on complete stock (stock recovery and rom) right? Would you please kindly point me to where I need to go to download the stock Rom and recovery. There's some TWRP flashable OTA zips on Oneplus forums that restore stock Rom and recovery but I want to be sure that that is enough and that I don't end up bricking my device for something as stupid as this. Any help would greatly be appreciated!

I need to be on complete stock (stock recovery and rom) right? Would you please kindly point me to where I need to go to download the stock Rom and recovery. There's some TWRP flashable OTA zips on Oneplus forums that restore stock Rom and recovery but I want to be sure that that is enough and that I don't end up bricking my device for something as stupid as this. Any help would greatly be appreciated!

Follow all instructions from here (except I would suggest sideloading the StockROM before relocking).

I followed the same guide posted on OnePlus Forum to re-lock my bootloader. Just follow them, it works.
Here is that link from OnePlus forum.
1. I restored my stock rom backup from TWRP
2. Flashed Stock recovery
3. fastboot oem lock
4. Sideload stock ROM
Done.
I unlocked because stock ROM I felt was much stabler and hassle free. Have rooted and played with custom ROMs enough in my Nexus 5 days. Just too much stress and can end up with non-working features. Might root again in future if I find something compelling in custom ROM.

If you unlock device, you will still be able to apply OTA. If you rooted by modifying the /system partition, OTA will fail, but if thou rooted using systemless method, you can apply OTA.
Iam on stock OOS 4.0.3 and i was plagued by the same error
--adb sideload the complete rom (with locked bootloader)-- method worked for me.
Previously i had unlocked bootloader and was on freedom OOS 2.3 with TWRP and then i realized that stock updates are better.
So i installed stock recovery and and tried to flash Stock Firmware 4.0.3 through sideload command and it failed.
then i installed TWRP and then installed stock OOS 4.0.3 and it installed fine but with some error.
Then i installed stock recovery
So i rebooted it and after long time it was installed but then i started getting dm_verity error and also i was frustated with unlocked bootloader message.
So i locked my boot loader first from fastboot oem lock and then sideloaded the stock 4.0.3 again and it really worked.
So now i am on stock rom and stock recovery and no more dm_verity error or unlocked bootloader msg to wait for 5 secs...
Now iam really loving my Oneplus 3..

I believe you might be able to with a systemless root. This may cause issues though without the bootloader unlock.
What I'd do, and I've already unlocked my bootloader, is boot TWRP, this won't replace your recovery and will disappear next boot, then flash magisk systemless root.
This should allow root with a locked bootloader BUT I can't try this now as I have an unlocked bootloader.
You'd do this through fastboot.
Be prepared to reflash your stock rom if you do get a soft brick...

Thanks ultramag69 for info. Have you a guide for safe root? The only guide that seemed trustworthy that I found on the internet, unfortunately it was written in Chinese.

OK, if you are game...
As I said, my phone has bootloader unlocked so this worked fine, I don't know if it will work.
Essentailly you replace the stock recovery with TWRP TEMPORARILY, just one boot.
Download magisk systemless root file and put on sd card. Also activate developer settings and tick " USB Debugging".
Put TWRP file in folder with fastboot files on PC, hold shift and right click. Select "open CMD window here".
Put phone in fastboot mode. Attach to PC with usb.
Type in cmd window "fastboot devices", you should see you're serial number come up on another line if you are connected.
Type "fastboot boot twrp.img" - make sure the twrp file is named this.
You should reboot to TWRP. Make sure you DON'T select "Alter system files" as you're bootloader is locked.
Install magisk systemless root file from TWRP.
Reboot and see if it works...
As I said, I did this after I unlocked the bootloader but as magisk is a systemless root I don't see this not working.
That said there is always a risk when doing this sort of thing and I would urge you to unlock bootloader 1st as this makes it a bit easier to fix if things if something does go bad...

If you unlock your bootloader then yes there is a TWRP you can flash and from there gain root by either flashing SuperSU or Magisk.
I prefer not to replace my recovery as when I was trying to gain root there was a problem with TWRP registering the touches in a reversed position, top right corner would register bottom left corner and so on. So instead I booted TWRP and installed Magisk, this gained root access but allowed flashing OTA updates instead of having to download a 2gb rom by keeping stock recovery.
Twrp has since been fixed and should be fine now but I still prefer to keep stock recovery, it's really up to you, either use "fastboot boot twrp.recovery" to temporarily replace stock (it reverts to stock when you reboot) or "fastboot flash twrp.recovery", this will flash twrp to your device permasnently (or until you want to replace it).
At the moment, magisk is not allowing safety net to pass but there should be an update soon that will fix this, flashing supersu will never allow a safetynet check to pass...
Again, up to you and how you use your device but either way will give you root access....

Thats the question, can "easily" install magisk on stock rom (.236) unrooted ? since magisk thread says that root is not necessary, its ask for stock boot img that cant be obtained w/o root

Never tried, but even though root may not be needed, unlocked bootloader probably is. Magisk non-system works by patching boot img... If you unlock bootloader you probably can use it.

You can unlocked bl by official Sony method, then flash recovery with adb. Boot to recovery and flash Magisk.

perfect. thx! i was already wondering, if i had to downgrade my z1c in order to get the recovery back. but now, how i do i flash magisk from here?
when i try to flash, i get an error message saying, that the ftf is in sony elf32 format and that i need bootbridge from @AdrianDC to flash.
anyone ever did that or has a better idea?

It is many months after this post, but in case this helps anyone, here is the answer.
BootBridge method is pretty simple and it worked for me.
On an un-rooted device. (important)
Just rename magisk zip to "install.zip" put it in a folder called install.
Then with 7zip, create a zip-file, include the bootbridge folders, "META-INF" and "scripts" with the "install folder" you just created.
Then name it "anything_you_like.zip" and flash with TWRP
Basically Magisk is SuperSU alternative and provides SuperSU service for your device. ( roots it )
No problems for me at this point. Working on 14.5.A.0.270 and can also get working on 14.6.A.0.236 but have other problems related to getting compatible recovery on 236.
Eventually in recovery, system mount and unmount break for me, then other mounts eventually fail after trying to get Nanodroid working (My Goal to UnGoogle my Z1c) and can't wipe format or anything (only way to fix is reflash with flashtool)
Deodexed ROM seems to be necessary for Nanodroid and this is causing additional problems for me.
If I have to run with unlocked bootloader, I think AOSP may be a better starting point.
