Hello - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My name is Mike I used to think I was a guru at the fire stick. Yet I've never rooted a fire stick. I've been having a lot of issues with downloading to my USB. It was working flawlessly for a while now it has stopped on the 4K and Max not sure what changed but I'm not just talking about apps but downloading movies all kinds of videos from porn and music and locate them and put them onto my SD card from internal . Somehow firestick has taken over the writable permissions to my SD card. Anybody have suggestions or a fix?? Very flustered!! Not having any luck finding any answers anywhere. Do I have to root my Fire Sticks to make this work now where it worked fine before
?? Worked on ( 64 g / 1 ter/2 ter) total Commander, no Kodi. Js.

I use Total Commander for moving files from my computer to my usb stick in my AFTV.
XBMC has config files you can change the location of stuff in them. There is probably a few threads explaining how. I'd do a search.
I use Foldermount to move some of my Xbmc stuff to my usbstick. But I don't download movies thru xbmc, so I don't know if it stores them there.
Google Play store will have your up to date emulators. At the very least, they have links to the dev's websites which usually have the apk's you can download.
I made a directory on my usbstick called ROMS and then I make sub directories, like NES, SNES, GBA, Gen, etc for my roms & bios (as needed).
Thanks for your help! Once I get my 32gb stick tomorrow, I'll get locked down how you said..

Kodi running on USB on new Update

Hello
anybody aware of if it is possible not only to move kodi to USB but also the Data ?
it seems that all the Thumbnails still are stored on the Fire TV and not the USB ( and taking up a lot of space) even when Kodi is running from the USB ?

How do you mean running from USB? Using the normal Android 'Move To' option or with a rooted option like FolderMount/Link2SD?
If you are rooted then you can use the aforementioned apps to also move the sdcard/Android/data/... folders to the USB as well which is where the thumbnails live.
If you are not rooted then I believe you can use path substitution for the thumbnails using advancedsettings.xml but it does seem to have its own problems.
See example 2 here: http://kodi.wiki/view/Path_substitution
And a working example here: http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=201788
Thank you for your fast reply .-) - My Fire Tv is not rooted - running the lastest Update from Yesterday

i have idea how it ist done ?

Possible to connect external hard drive and torrent?

Hey guys. Looking at buying the amazon fire tv for my room to watch movies, tv shows, and maybe play some gta. But im determining if its the right fit for me. So i was wondering if its possible to connect my 2tb usb2/3 hdd to the fire tv, and is it possible to have a torrent client (maybe just utorrent after sideloading play store?) to download lage files to the hard drive. Also i assume ill have to root so is the newest version rootable and can do what i asked above? Im not sure what the newest version is to look it up myself. Any guides on how to do what i asked will be much appreciated!

Yes the latest version of the Fire Tv (AFTV2 4K version) is rootable (v5.0.4), you can find the method in the general section of this forum or there is gonna be a video guide available sometime next week (hopefully) if you can wait? As far as I know you can put a Hard drive on but not sure unless modded you can write to it (unless doing via a PC/laptop because I think at the moment the drive is only readable? (I maybe wrong about that though?). Playstore can be installed but can't be used properly (can login but can't download apps from), but you can sideload apps via a app called Apps2Fire from your Android phone or tablet. Think you can use torrent clients via Kodi anyway or just stream films/tv/sports or what ever from Kodi?

Can someone chime if they've been able to mount and write to an external hard drive? I'm also interested in using the fire tv for torrents.
I have the fire TV 4k with the latest rooted version, I mounted a 3TB WD hard drive with Stickmount. I have used the Utorrent apk to write to the hard drive successfully. I haven't used the Kodi torrent addons tho.
But yes you can read and write to a hard drive. I have downloaded media straight to a hard drive using Utorrent, Kodi, Dolphin browser and Es File Manager.

Which format is your 3TB HDD.
I have not rooted mine and can only get fat32 to read which is ridiculous in this day and age to only support an archaic storage format. You can't have 4GB+ file sizes.

SOLVED (FolderMount) -- Knights of the Old Republic: run .obb files from SD?

Hi,
Excited that Amazon Underground has released KOTOR for free. I sideloaded the .apk and the .obb files on my rooted AFTV2 (running pre-rooted 5.0.5_r4).
I'm having difficulties finding a way to move the .obb files to an external SD card and run the game. I've tried three different apps that are advertised to help in this situation: OBB on SD (Xposed Module), Link2SD, and FolderMount.
In all cases, I first verify that the game runs of internal SD card, then use the software to successfully move the .obb files. Then when I try to launch the game, I get the error, "Downloaded Resources Validation Failed" (screenshot attached).
Has anyone found a working method to move the OBB files (and create symbolic links) in a way that KOTOR is happy with?
thanks!
Foldermount did the job for me. I sideloaded the underground version of the game, started the app and canceled the download after a few seconds.
Next i used foldermount to create the link and started the download again.

Thanks for the tip! I started the downloaded, canceled it, and after creating the link in Foldermount, resumed the download. The downloaded files were showing up in both the internal and linked OBB folder (like normal). However, when KOTOR finished downloading, it gives me the same error as before ("Downloaded Resources Validation Failed"), and then repeats the download. When the download finishes, the process loops.
It seems like it is close to working - did you encounter this error, and were you able to get past it?
Thanks again!

No sorry, i had no problems at all. I attached some screenshots of the settings (in german :/ if something isn't clear, just ask).
Do normal apps have write access to the SD-Card? I'm using a FTV1 with FAT32 USB Stick and folder mount asked me to fix it automatically. Also if you use the "move/copy function" of folder mount: Keep in mind there is no progress bar, so wait some time depending on the amount of data.

Perfect! The screenshots were helpful for me to make sure that I was following the correct steps. I tried a different SD card, and everything worked (KOTOR verified the download and launched... When I check "Internal Space" under "Manage Applications," it shows the correct amount of space on the internal drive).
Thanks again for your help!
I tried the above method and still no luck. Is the Amazon underground apk different from the one in the fire TV store. Is there another way to get this game to work on fire tv 2gen?

I haven't tried the version from the Amazon Fire TV store - just the underground version (since was free). Both are listed as version 1.0.7 (16.3MB) in the Amazon Appstore, so although I can't verify, it looks like they might be the same.
I had to make sure that I had around 4gb free on my internal storage before starting the process (I got a "Downloaded Resources Failed" error if I had less than that). Does the game work if you install / run it from the internal SD?
Good luck - hope this helps.
I've solved my issue with "Downloaded Resources Failed" error. I installed Kotor on my galaxy tab 4 and then used AGK fire to install that app on my fire tv 4K. I installed it from the apps on phone in AGK fire. I had to move it over to the sc card for space. Works like a charm

In addition to installing Kotor from another device, I had to move the the obb files to the sd card. Using the "foldermount" method from Post #4 worked perfectly. I also used the method for "Castle of Illusion"' all the downloads go to the sd card now.
Did you guys root your fire tv? I thought that foldermount was only for rooted devices.

Wow...thanks for this great tip. I have wanted to do this for a long time but never got it to work. This worked perfectly for Asphalt 8. Moved the 1.2 gig data to my usb drive and the game opened right up and played great! Think I'm even gonna fork out a couple bucks for the paid version of Foldermount so I can move more games to usb storage.
thanks again.

Banging my head--WHY is AFTV automatically moving data?

I'm really confused so I'll try to provide details I can recall...
My AFTV gen 1 with OS5 kodi install was a little glitchy so eventually wound up doing a clean install.
This came AFTER MANY attempts to preserve my data.
The last 2 times I tried this I completely wiped every bit of kodi data I had on internal and USB. I installed kodi Jarvis.
The 1st time I scanned sources and it populated fine. But when I exit kodi then relaunch it I'm greeted with what looks like a blank install!
To sum up, it appears like when I exit Kodi it sends Kodi data to my usb BUT there are no settings in place to actually read that data so Kodi is blank.
Last time I made certain to remove everything. Then I took my sources.xml from my other aftv (same setup) and moved it to the problem aftv. I start up kodi, all seems fine--my movies and TV shows are there. I exit and POOF! Its gone again. If I delete my kodi data from usb drive Kodi works again but when I exit it repeats the cycle.
I'm stumped. Any help is appreciated. Thanks
***I think the issue would be resolved if someone could just tell me why data keeps exporting to my usb drive. I keep deleting it but Kodi winds up back on my usb once I exit.

This took 5 seconds on google.
Backing up Kodi is as simple as copying over the userdata folder, btw. If you don't know how to copy files, learn to use adb and get to know the filestructure of kodi a bit better using a file explorer on the Fire TV. Or just use a File explorer and copy the userdata folder to a networkdrive (Total commandar f.e. has a lan plugin), or a usb stick, or... If you don't know what a folder is... Try to learn that as well...

I appreciate the help but Ive been using Kodi since Frodo and aftv gen 1 since June 2014. Ive been through numerous kodi versions and never has the aftv just defaulted to moving all the data to usb...
In fact Im pretty sure it doesn't because theres methods available specifically for aftv to properly move data to usb.
I have to take a closer look at my other aftv. Its running the same kodi version.
***Btw my bandaid was to remove my usb stick and copy sources.xml from my other aftv. It works fine but of course not having external storage isnt a good option.
