Step 5 of the upgrade instuctions say that if you want install add-ons, you need to click Advanced then Reboot to Recovery. However, my phone, as mentioned in the instructions can happen, goes to a black screen. So how can I install Gapps after side-loading LOS?
Has anyone successfully carried out the upgrade?
Try this:
Connect your phone to a charger or pc....(make sure its charging)....then press and hold (vol up + power button)...until android one logo shows up, as soon as the logo shows up just leave the power button but still holding the volume up button until it enters lineage os recovery menu. Then flash your gapps...and then factory reset,....then reboot system. It works.....good luck

My problem was not that I didn't know what to do. The problem is that on my phone, I just get a blank screen when I boot to recovery. The recovery still works, but it is hard to use if you can't see what you are doing. However, as I have another phone where I can see the recovery, I was able to use that as a guide.
Ok

Hello! I have the exact same issue! Is there any known fix yet and can I contribute somehow?
I haven't found a solution, but some workarounds are given here: https://gitlab.com/LineageOS/issues/android/-/issues/4170

The TWRP workaround did not work for me, but I awas able to install it blindly.
Is there any way to run the LOS Recovery on a windows PC in VirtualBox or something? Then I could make some screenshots of the Recovery Menu so everyone with the same issue can at least do it blindly in theory...

Hi, I'm trying to flash Clockworkmod using this method.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1446593&highlight=clockworkmod+recovery&page=10
But now I don't seem to be able to get it to go into recovery mode at all any more.
I hold down up home and pwer and it gets to the screen with the picture of the android and the box with the arrow coming out of it. But then it just seems to reboot.
The phone still works other than that.
Is there a knack to getting it into recovery mode thaqt I just haven't got?
Ok I've managed to get it into recovery (but only once- there's clearly a knack to it I'm missing)
But the problem now is that it's still the stock recovery.
My phone is rooted and debugging is on.
any ideas (on either)
u use adb to flash? if that didnt work y not try to flash using odin v4.43?

I seem to have the same problem, did you figure out how to go in recovery without getting reboot right after you press the menu button?
EDIT: I might have been pressing buttons in the wrong order or too long/short. As soon as I see samsung logo I released power button and I holded menu button a bit longer. I'm not sure about the last one tried again with a short press and it worked as well, I think the most important thing here is when to release power button.

Go into an adb terminal and type in
Code:
adb reboot recovery[/quote]. If you don't have adb, search up minimal adb and fastboot, and how to use it.

I've seen people are viewing this post if anyone know how to fix my problem please help or message me, the minimal adb won't work unless the device is turned on in usb. debugging, I can access my recovery with phone on easily but while it's powered off I should be able to get to custom recovery by pressing volume down and power while phone is off, but this method isn't working. So if I get in bootloop I can't get into custom recovery...please anyone any ideas
Well it should be as simple as holding down power and volume button down things but i guess you've already tried that method many times and it didnt work so you ask then, right?
If your phone in bootloop, you can flash tot files and it will back to stock re-root and re-install trwp.
If your phone still (or already) normal, you can download an app that can take you to custom recovery such as rebooter or power menu, thats it.
Yea phone isn't in bootloop, but if I put a Rom on phone I have no way to access the recovery because the volume and power won't take me to the recovery, so if it goes into bootloop I'm outta of luck I don't understand why the hardware buttons won't take me to the recovery, have you ever heard of this problem

How long are you holding the vol down and power buttons? It should be around 15-20 seconds, then your system recovery screen comes up, you choose factory data reset, yes, and then TWRP comes up. If that isn't working - are you sure your buttons are working OK?
If the phone is turned off is there any other way to access it while phone is off?
Yes buttons work fine I hold it down and it just goes to Verizon screen ?
Actually when I hold it down it just stays on logo and reboots back to logo over and over and over
Actually I hold it down and it reboots to logo over and over its like there's no recovery there I don't understand lol
If anyone has any ideas or thoughts on how to fix this please let me know

OK... Does your phone boot into your ROM at all or are you bootlooped? If your phone boots, download an app called flashify and get the proper twrp .img file for your model and flash the image using flashify. It's an easy app to use - just make sure you're using the correct twrp .img for your phone...from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/orig-development/recovery-twrp-touch-recovery-2-8-2-0-t2966129
If you are bootlooped I would suggest starting over and reflashing back to stock using the tot or kdz method. Here is a guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-lg-g3/general/restore-verizon-to-stock-t2827878 I know it can be a pain to get the download tool working properly sometimes, so it may take some effort to get it working, but be patient (and read a lot if you get stuck) and you will get it working.
I don't know how you got borked...maybe it was an un-bumped twrp image? Either way, it is what it is, just try not to do it again Good luck.
Thanks much I'll try this
When this happened to me i would
1: remove battery
2: insert battery
3: hold volume down and lock button at the same time
4: When the LG Logo pops up release the lock button for 1 second (while still holding the volume down button), then press down again
5: A data reset/restore menu appears, and when you choose to reset/restore, TWRP boots to recovery.

Hmm. That worked for me. I'm not sure what next.
Hello,
I installed a custom ROM (ViperOneM8+4.6.1) on my M8, which is the international edition M8QL_UL.
I now suspect this ROM is not compatible, as the phone is stuck in a reboot loop - the white screen with the red text at the bottom appears, and then about 35 seconds later the screen goes blank and it restarts.
I've tried holding the power button down to try and turn it off, but it won't stop restarting.
I've tried holding the volume down + power buttons to enter recovery and it doesn't work.
Adb and fastboot don't work either - the phone isn't on long enough to appear on my PC.
Please let me know if there's anything I can do at this point?
Cheers.

There is no button combo that boots into recovery for this device. I believe you mean the button combo to enter bootloader. Folks will often call this recovery, but bootloader and recovery are 2 completely different things (and this is an important distinction), and folks need to stop thinking they are the same.
Since the phone is bootlooping, just hold the vol down button during the next "loop" and you will enter bootloader.
Once in bootloader, then you can select to boot into custom recovery. Then restore your stock nandroid, if you made one before flashing the custom ROM (and you should always make a nandroid of the stock ROM before flashing a custom ROM).
If you didn't make a stock nandroid, you'll need to use RUU or find a stock nandroid that matches your firmware number.

Fastboot only works in bootloader-fastboot mode; adb only works in OS or recovery. So neither is ever going to work while in a bootloop. Get into bootloader as I've described above (and select fastboot); and you should at least be able to use fastboot.

Thanks for the suggestions and advice - I've got the Pandora Rom back on it now and won't be fiddling anymore I think.
I actually managed to get it sorted by holding vol-up and power for a good 15 seconds based on advice from the M8s thread, just in case any one has the same problem and vol-down doesn't solve it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=63177320&postcount=658

Power+vol up reboots the phone. You stated the phone was already in a bootloop, which means it was already rebooting over and over.
Vol down (just vol down, no need to hold power button) during any reboot will put you into bootloader. If it doesn't, its because you didn't hold vol down long enough.
Hey everyone. I'm a novice at this, but I've gotten tired of Xiamoi's updates and decided to try Pixel Experience I downloaded the latest version of TWRP and flashed it per the instructions on the website. I know that unless I boot straight into it, it'll be overwritten by the stock recovery, but that doesn't seem to be possible. Both power + volume up, and adb fastboot reboot recovery just take me into a boot loop until I hard reset. And then of course, the stock recovery is back.
I tried Orange Fox, and various other versions of TWRP, and the same thing happened. This phone really does not want to boot into a custom recovery.
This has been a difficult question to google as everyone just gives obvious solutions like "reboot straight into recovery!!" I'm hoping someone else has experience with this.

If you install PE successfully it won't overwrite your current recovery. As far as I know only stock MIUI removes custom recovery when it boots into system.
To boot into TWRP with the phone off press and hold volume up + power button. When the Redmi logo appears release only the power button (keep volume up pressed). When the TWRP logo appears you can release the volume up button.
Ignore the root part if you don't want it.

I don't have PE yet, I'm still on stock MIUI. I'd like to switch to PE but I can't get into TWRP or any other custom recovery.
Also I have tried this several times-- as stated in the post, volume up + power just sends me into a bootloop, and the next time I restart, MIUI is able to remove the custom recovery.

Sorry, I mistook your post for the same couple suggestions I'd been given, and was way too quick to write it off. Using the downloads in the video description worked like a charm. Thank you so much!
So, I was on /e/ os, and I wanted to switch to lineageos, so I downloaded the zip, flashed TWRP (as recovery) went into it, flashed los, rebooted, got to boot screen, and right as it was about to go into setup, it turned off. I tried again, same thing, etc etc. I tried to go into fastboot and recovery, nothing. It's stuck at the Recovery mode... loading... then it has purple led at the top. it is the canadian h812 version.

Hi. I don't know exactly what the problem is and how to solve it. I would wait for an answer steadfasterX, or someone who knows the exact answer.
I would try to do this, but as I wrote above, I do not know if it will help or not:
Factory reset hardware key combo (https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/unlock-unofficial-g4-unlock-any-lg-g4-device-with-usu.3760451/)
As written above the regular key combo to get into the LG factory reset screen changes a bit:
power off device
disconnect any usb cable from the device
press volume UP + power button and KEEP THEM BOTH pressed until you see the LG logo the first time! THEN you have to immediately release the power button (ONLY that) and press and keep holding the power button directly again! Keep them pressed until you see the white LG factory reset screen
After that, I would try to go into the recovery, to format and restore or reflash.
Hope this helps. But it is better to wait for the answer of the knowledgeable. Good luck!

It worked... I hope the factory reset actually fixes it. (by it worked I mean I got into it)
Nope. Didn't work. It freezes up and says 'Secure booting error :1003' MODIFIED!' with a purpleish pinkish led.
Boot in fastboot and execute:
fastboot format userdata
(this will erase all internal data, pics, apps etc)
Then let it boot.
