Is there a way to reduce photo size from (apparently) 12mpx down to 6 or even 3? (I rarely print posters from my phone)
I see settings to change picture aspect ration, and I see settings to use HEIF format (what is that?)
but not picture size.
Thank you!
HEIF is an Apple format that can be converted to the jpeg format if needed for compatibility.

I don't want to convert every photo I take
my question was about 12mpx vs 6 or 3
But thanx anyway.

You don't have that option. HEIF is probably your best option. I don't know where it's usage is prohibited though... so research it, sample it.

My 17 yo Canon cam has more options for image resolution.
Samsung's image editing apps are limited in capability and flexibility. More hype than usefulness. I liked my S4+'s editing software much better than my N10+'s
Samsung also choose to forget how useful expandable storage is as the increased the cam image size, perfect.
I haven't been pleased with Samsung flagship phones since the N10+ release. A lot of dropped balls and lame excuses from the butterfingers at Samsung. Samsung use to brag how different they were from Apple... not anymore, and I hate Apples.

Hi guys,
Explantion first.
I've Been messing with the settings in the camera to try and get a good picture, the preview looks good then the image is captured and displayed and it looks arse to be honest.
So this got me thinking we have a 5MP sensor good preview image it must be the jpg compression in the software which has reduced the quality.
We have no flash so we need all the help we can get and RAW will allow us to change the exposure and white balance.
So I am looking for a piece of software that will take the sensor info and save it as a RAW image. I had one for my N95 and it improved the camera quality no end. If not I may have to get Visual studio out and get coding

That would be interesting but witch camera raw do you want to use? Because there are different camera raw formats like canon or nikon who have their own raw formats.
DNG tends to be a popular one which is digital negative but any RAW filetype would be a good starting point I think. Generally they are all the same and just dump the 5mp image as a full capture
This is a real good idea. And I think it is feasible, unfortunately we need someone skilled in prograamming to take a look at the code ( I assume the Camera.exe file) and somehow stop the image from being processed and just save to file.
Many times the frustration with HTC made me wish I studied computer science ( my initial plan ) instead of a biological major.
Is it worth it? I mean if one has the option why not but really is it worth it?
I think it is, yes. To be honest the camera app is the weakest point of the HD. The hardware is sufficient, but let down badly by the software.
I wonder if HTC have had enough comments and complaints to make them re-write it from the ground up?
I know it was possible on the N95, but the output in RAW mode was rubbish so was hardly worth it. I do agree though that the HDs camera could be better and its most likely a software issue

The main advantage of RAW data is when you come to using editing software... there is just more data to play with.
True, i know the output from the N95s RAW app was only 640x480 though, whether thats a limitation of the N95s other hardware systems i dont know.
Is there any, app, mod or something else that could allow us to take RAW pictures with desire? Is something like that even possible?
I do not think this is possible because a) the Desire can't achieve the throughput required to store the giant files RAW produces and so storing the files would take a while and b) RAW comes directly from the camera sensor and contains specific information about each pixel and I'm guessing HTC didn't put a (semi-)professional sensor in the phone.
What is possible though is converting pictures from JPEG to RAW but that defeats the purpose of RAW entirely. And also why would you need RAW on a phone? While phone cameras may have relatively alot of megaschitzels, it doesn't mean they produce good quality pictures. They also require decent lenses which (almost?) all phones lack. The megapixel race is senseless nowadays as the quality is currently defined by the quality of the lens. But hey, consumers (and usually prosumers too) buy into that nonsense because higher is always better, right?
Buy a camera if you need RAW, and use your phone for quick snaps for Twitter or Facebook.
Sorry -- rant from a photographer.
That's it, man..
I'm using my canon EOS for "real" photos and my desire for facebook snapshots.
A phone is not a camera.
But let the MediaMarkt-Megaschnitzeljadt go on... ;-)
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I would say that it is certainly possible for the desire to store RAW images given the right software and hardware permissions. All RAW is, is a dump of the sensor info. The desire already takes that info and compresses it into a JPEG so it can certainly handle the process.
Overall it must be possible and if not right now it must be hackable to do it.
[edit] A quick search reveals its been done for the Nokias on symbian
What about PNG pictures ? it's not RAW but still lossless, which is better then jpeg !

Yes I am very well aware of all that facts about lenses and megapixels but I thought that it would be kinda cool to take RAW-s with your phone , and not to speak about all benefits RAW gives you when it comes to the editing

This is also what I was thinking about. A dump from sensor. I dont think it's that hard to implement, to me it seems easier than taking JPEG pictures.

The PNG would be nice too.
Anyone else? Any devs? This would be quite nice feature.
Hello everyone,
I've been trying out a few camera apps and on two of them it showed the MP my camera was on and they both said 3.2 instead of the 5 mp it should normally be.. One of the apps is ProCapture, I've been messing around with the settings a bit, but i can't seem to get it to 5 mp?
I'm really confused and I wonder how I can fix this?
Cheers

You have to buy the full version for full resolution. I know that the ProCapture free version is just a demo with limited res so you can see all the feature but at low res.
(According the the apps info. I haven't bought the full version so I can't confirm it will be 5mp but safe to assumed it will be)

Note that the default 16:9 ratio doesn't use the full sensor and is 3.7mp. switching wide-screen off give the 'full' 5mp.
Ok, thanks alot guys. Are there any camera apps you use that you find give you "better" or sharper quality pictures? Because with my stock camera it seems to be a bit random..

I just saw this in a review, is this true?
I am personally shocked this is not supported.. That is one of the reasons I want the Ultra, so that is the shot I'm taking is in ideal conditions I can get a full 108 MP photo with amazing results.. Does anyone know if there going to allow in the future?
It's true just discovered this myself
There really is no 108mp. It is 12mp that should be better than other 12mp. I know this is not glitzy as 108mp but is real.
There is no 100x zoom either. There very good 4x zoom
If anything troubles me it is that pro mode does not support the wide camera nor the 4x camera. There is no way to take raw photos with either of those. I find the HEIC abysmal. I need to see if JPEG is any better.
The raw from the main camera looks pretty good though. Perhaps better than other phones. You get verygood 12mp DNG file. That is impressive and great. You can also get RAW from the front camera.
The 4x zoom if not opened at 100% even in heic looks good. Heic though produces some awful smudging of details and halo effects
Kind of defeats the purpose.
AND not having development due to a locked bootloader.
May have to (keep) the favor to iOS side.
Seriously.

This phone just came out. Give it some time dude
No Pro Mode Except for Standard Wide Angle
Pro Mode (raw format) is a must for me in both Ultrawide and Telephoto. Since this is a simple software fix, anyone hear if and when it will happen? Makes no sense that some beancounter in the system didn't allow full Pro Mode from the start!
Hey guys! Could you download this app called Camera2 Test from the play store? It reads all the features that all the cameras have implemented with the Camera 2 API. I'm curious if a 108mp RAW mode is there. You can go to the full tab in the app and share the file in here. Thanks in advance! (perferably from az exynos device, but both would be preferred!)
EDIT: There is another app Camera2 API Probe. Just need to scroll down, share, and it will generate a link. Sorry for the inconvenience!

I uploaded one raw and couple of post processing options. One is without corrections and the other (warmer one) is to my liking. I used Lightroom.

I am yet to do a bit more photography with the S20 ultra. Here is an album of photos I took from a walk before the quarantine in my country. I will put more photos in there as I get more experience with the phone when I go out after the quarantine.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/kirilk/albums/72157713487224503
It is very fitting to my expectations. I wanted a phone camera that has wide angle and optical magnification higher than 75mm equivalent, Between 100 mm to 135 mm equivalent was my dream. SO S20 ultra is exactly that 12mm wide angle (excellent, 105mm equivalent telephoto is excellent too. There is also the larger main 12MP sensor I like. Yes it can do 108MP with tons of mathematics and that would likely get you a bit more detail at the cost of dynamic range and noise.....
PS I would very much appreciate if Samsung give us RAW files form the telephoto and wide angle. I know wide angle has distortion and likely the telephoto suffers vignetting and or distortion too but Lightroom can fix those things. Samsung should add another camera app meant for photo enthusiasts.. RAW files with high bit depth and latitude for editing in post should be the emphasis there.

Thank you so much. If i understand correctly, the flickr photos are before the update, and the dropbox are after the update right?
All photos in the above post use the same software . I got one update immediately as I installed the phone.
G988BXXU1ATBM (there are two more version strings I guess for other hardware modifications) ,431,19MB in size containing the 1st of March security updates

Thank you for your efforts! I watched a video from India today. They got the ATC1/H update first. It looks very promising, take a look:
https://youtu.be/wZoWAben4CA
The old news about the ATC2 update from Korea are somewhat misleading since the update with the lower number brings improvements that where not to be seen in the ATC2 video from Korean user which we all have probably seen.
I just got an update to .......ATCH and can confirm AF works now pretty well including close up.
RAW from telephoto or wide angle is not available . Camera2 API does not see the telephoto camera.
So I guess AF is likely the only fix.
Hi guys,
weird question I guess: How do I know my cam is working as intendend?
Tried the CRDroid-ROM, worked great, then I noticed my Cam (Gcam-mod) only does 12,5MP-shots in every mode at max.
Thought it was the ROM, now back to a wiped clean Factory February-image from Google. Yet exactly the same but with way less options.
Still only 12,5MP and compared to my other phones it's not even better. Considering I bought the P6P mainly because of the camera it's a bit of a let-down.
I thought it was 50, 48 and 12,5MP.
Am I too dumb to see my error here or what's up with it?
Thanks for your time.
The camera converts all shots to 12.5 mp. Samsungs does this too. Its false marketing.

Ah! So it does have the physical resolution it marketed but uses that as an antialiasing-kinda-thingie for downsampling? So I'm questioning my sanity for nothing and it's all fine? DAMN

This actually is false.
You have an option in the camera settings of the Samsung S21 ultra that allows you to take 108mp shots. Full res. They're huge files. But they're awesome when you need all the detail in great lighting. I was SEVERELY DISAPPOINTED that there is NO OPTION to change the Pixel 6 Pro to 50MP. In my book it's still a 12mp camera, which really SUCKS when wanted the bigger picture...
Ok didn't know
