Question Disable automatic system update downloads - Google Pixel 6 Pro

Hi all.
Question as I cannot seem to figure this out or find a way to do this - with P6P (running SP2A), is there any way to turn off the automatic downloading of system updates?
Not referring to automatic updates installing, which is turned off in developer settings, but the downloading of them which happens in the background automatically. Turning off automatic system updates doesn't stop them from downloading automatically.
I don't have an unlimited data plan and this just used 449mb over cellular yesterday, so my quota is pretty screwed since I still have 25 days left in the cycle and I usually only use ~650mb in a month.
P6P; rooted; SP2A build

[Q] After updating to 2.3.4 cellphone keeps donwloading updated version of an app

After updating to 2.3.4 cellphone keeps donwloading updated version of an app (in this case Angry Birds Season) multiple times. I already deleted the app, unnistalled but the only way to stop it seems to be deactivating any type of internet connection (wifi/3g)
Any way to fix it?
try unchecking 'automatically update' in the market page of that app
Happened to me. I uninstall update of market app. Then run market to see
Got a Headache? It's all in your Head.
I have to wait for it to finish downloading the multiple copies. It stopped after that. However, I want the app, and hoping the issue stopped I tried to install it again, but it started all over.
About the market update, the option "automatically update" is only turned on for foursquare (which I have to test again yet, was not working since last try).
Sometimes this happen due to the internet connection having intermittenly disturbance while updating which resulting having your device rescan and reupdating again and again. Or it can be also from human error as you press update button multiple times which triggered to a multiple downloads.
The last one comes from the app(Market) itself. You may try uninstalling the Market app and reinstalling it again to create new database and cache from a fresh installed.
Hi thanks!
I replaced the old market by the 3.1.3. Seems to be a bit heavier though.
I also noticed that the internet connection got a bit slower than the usual after upgrading. There is any optimisation to be done?
It also happened with me and I think it's mainly because of internet connection and pressing update multiple times just update it smoothly it will not download multiple time. It's really pain to download one update multiple time
Next time just press the update once and it will eventually updating, sometimes it take a little bit longer to start the update process so you got to be patient on this.
Internet connection normally base on your service provider(Telco) and distant between you and the transmitting tower. To optimise it, you better get the APN update direct from your service provider and stay within the coverage area..
just one thing.
Few apps internet and gps related are not working as it should, like foursquare.
How do I know if I made a full upgrade or not? Because I might want go back to 2.2.1

[Q] Google Services using massive data constantly... what's going on here?

Ever since upgrading to Lollipop (5.0.1), my G3 has been consuming vast quantities of mobile data (much more than it does on Wi-Fi) , at a rate that is threatening even my 1GB monthly cap. I have never had this issue with this phone before upgrading, nor with any other phone I have owned, and I can't find any resources about it online. It appears to use small amounts of data (a few KB) continuously throughout the day, not in large chunks, so it is not Google trying and failing to download a software update like come CM users have seen.
I uninstalled every app that I did not have before the Lollipop upgrade, as well as any potentially troublesome apps, to no avail. Then I tried booting into safe mode, removing all my synced accounts except the main Google one, turning off sync for that account, turning off data backup, clearing the caches of all my apps, and not opening any non-stock apps for a day. Even with all that, it still ran through a few megs in just an afternoon. Turning everything back on and setting accounts back up did not increase or decrease the data consumption. Restricting its background data does stop it from using mobile data, but it also seriously cripples my device (Play store stops working, sync stops working, calendar etc. stop working...)
I attached screenshots that show its data usage. It decreased considerably around June 9th because I finally got Wi-Fi in my room. But even still, it continues to eat my data for no apparent reason. I REALLY want to avoid a factory reset (and I doubt it would help anyway, since it was factory reset for the upgrade, and running everything completely stock doesn't help).
Can anyone give me some ideas here?
Info about the phone:
Model: LG-D851 (T-Mobile)
Android version: 5.0.1 (stock, rooted)
Kernel version: 3.4.0
Software version: D85120b
Network: olleh (South Korea, the same SIM card I used with the phone before the upgrade)
Google Play Services version: 7.5.71 (1955121-430)
Google Services Framework/Google Account Manager versions: 5.0.1-1602158
Hey, try limiting background data. There should be a tick above the usage graph.
Also many people have problems after upgrading to lollipop, including me, you should try factory reset. I had like half of my apps broken and frequent crashes after upgrading.

Hi Martin, thanks for the reply. I'm trying to avoid restricting background data because I often have to go long stretches without Wi-Fi, and a lot of my apps stop working properly if background data is restricted. And I don't want to factory reset because it takes me days to set my phone back up to how it was.

[IMPORTANT] Major security concern with oreo

There is a weird problem that I have been facing after updating to official OxygenOS vs5.0.1 from Nougat through OTA. The phone seems to access Internet by itself.
Before and after every update, I clean Cache for proper installation. However it came to me by surprise when I saw page long Privacy Agreement which says it will access everything in my phone even if you are not part of " User experience program" whether you keep it ON or OFF.
So now the problem is.. every night when i turn off Data and WiFi, the phone seems to somehow access Internet as I see new mails, FB updates, New Whatsapp msgs in Notification every morning. And Toggle and WiFi still OFFFFF !!! After checking the time, updates only between 5AM to 7AM. The phone still access Internet between these hours and this is happening the day I installed OTA 5.0.1 and Agreement which is mandatory to accept. The " User Experience Program" is turned OFF. After this Incident, I have restricted background data for most of the system and user apps. No Special Data access to any application. Still the problem is same. Only the day when I woke up early the other day to check if Data is ON again at 5-6AM. It wasnt and no access that day but other days its same.
Is anyone else experiencing the same?? My phone is not rooted and no bootloader unlocked..!!
This is a serious matter for all Oneplus users as we have bank and personal details in phone. Let me know if anyone else facing this issue.
This only effect those on oem software which I figured most would avoid by now with all the times they have been caught.

Is there a way to force system updates to download over wifi only?

Android 9 (Pie) was just pushed onto my Pixel XL.
I was shocked to find that it had done so while I was away from a WiFi network. And, thus used up about a GB of my monthly data plan quota.
It's been awhile since I last looked into this (probably back in KitKat days)... but is there still no way to force Android to download system updates only over Wifi? I would have thought that Android OS would have incorporated some method of giving users a way to control the type of connectivity over which system updates download. At $10/Gig, I'd like to have a more explicit way to control how much an OS system upgrade is going to impact my family's monthly data plan costs.
Does anyone know of a way to force Android OS system updates to use only wifi (not cellular data)?
By default, update uses only WiFi. You may have hit resume download by mistake. That maybe the reason it used your mobile data. As far I as know and experience it, it uses only WiFi by default. So, no need to force it to use WiFi only.

If you're on Fi, and it sounds like you are, then contact them and let them know what happened. They will usually issue a one-time credit to cover an update over cellular.
Also, if you disable automatic updates under developer options, you will have control over when an update downloads. However, there is no explicit "update only over WiFi" option that I am aware of.

Thank you for the suggestion @jaytv
I called an spoke to a Project Fi customer service rep and they were able to credit my account for the 1GB of data that was used to download the update.

My research [so far] suggests, and the Project Fi rep confirmed, that there's no way to force updates to download 'only' over wifi.
Also, looking at the developer options, at least as they exist in Android 9 now... as I read it, the "Automatic system updates" toggle in Developer options suggests that it will "Apply updates when device restarts". That sounds to me like the device will go ahead and download updates automatically, but it will [or not] automatically apply the update upon device restart. In other words, it doesn't have any thing to do with which type of network connection over which an update will be downloaded.

Glad it worked with Fi. As for the toggle, it has been my experience that when it is used, the update does not download untill you give it permission.

I've disabled Automatic system updates in Developer Options.
Will see what happens when the next system update comes around.

Play Store completely broken while using mobile data only

The android play store is completely broken for me. It's been doing this for the last two weeks. Never had an issue before. I rarely post on XDA anymore because I never have problems with my phone and I'm tech savvy enough to troubleshoot my own stuff but I need help with this. The play store will only download apps and updates via wifi. After troubleshooting the app sometimes I can get it to work but most of the time it will be stuck at 99%, 49%, 36% downloaded or will just say "waiting for download" . I want to be able to use it without having to use wifi. I'm pretty sure it's a bug.
My play store settings:
App download preference: Over any network
Auto update apps: Dont auto update
Troubleshooting steps I took
1. Force close, clear cache
2. Force close, clear data
3. The above + restarting
4. Clear cache of play services and restart
5. Clear cache of download manager and restart
6. Full factory reset of my phone
7. Restarting mobile data, turning off/on wifi/Bluetooth
After the full restart I started to believe that an update somewhere broke the play store. I'm fully stock non rooted on Verizon. Every other app works just fine if it needs to use mobile data. I'm really frustrated and would like some assistance with this.
What email account is your playstore showing it is using? Is it a fully legitimate Gmail account? Or is it an email account that is a student account? Maybe business related?
And have you disabled any apps?
Possible fix...
I've been having the same issue on my rooted S8 since about a week after I bought it two years ago. I could never download new apps or do updates over the air. Now, I just in the last week bought a Note 10+ 5G and set it up with the second of the two Gmail accounts I have. I'm still using the same SIM card I've had for over a year. The Gmail account having issues with OTA updates is over 25 years old now, the newer one's about five years old. Now, as much as I'd like it to be the Note's not rooted, and if I'm logged into the newer Google account it's quite happily grabbing Play Store app. updates over the air.
You beauty!, you say. "Fixed it you have", would say Master Yoda.
Um, no.
If I switch back to the older Google account I instantly lose the ability to download anything over the air. Grabbing stuff while the device is connected to the internet via a wi-fi hotspot works like a charm, but I've tried every solution offered to me by Google technicians and Android experts alike and STILL can't get it download and install an app. when I'm anywhere other than hooked up to my home router. Go figure!
So yeh, just letting you know you're not the only one.
EDIT: Just had a play around (pardon the pun) with -> Settings -> Google Settings -> Google Account
Try this out and see how you go.
1. After you land in Google Settings, make sure the Google account you're having OTA dramas with is showing.
2. Tap on 'Data and Messaging'.
3. Tap on 'Data Management'.
4. Tap on 'Update Drive-enabled app. files'.
5. Tap on 'Over Wi-Fi or mobile data'
Back-arrow your way out, check that your handset is NOT connected to the internet via wi-fi, then go to Play Store, check for updates and they should download without issues over your mobile service provider's network connection. Please note that your mobile data allowance will be used, but you should also be able to wander the streets and grab new apps without needing to connect to a wi-fi hotspot.
Yippee! Oh, and don't applaud...
just throw money.
