One of my biggest gripes about Android is the fact that notifications are often delayed. This is because Google has implemented doze - a feature which saves battery life. That's great 'n all, but I absolutely need my notifications ASAP as they're paramount to my business.
I've used the following adb command for a while now to disable doze: adb shell dumpsys deviceidle disable. I know this only works until you restart your phone, but I don't mind doing the command line once a week.
However, it looks like this command does not work for the Pixel 6 Pro. I'm not sure why, but it just doesn't. At first, I thought it may have been an Android 12 issue, but that turned out to be completely incorrect as my new S22 Ultra that's on Android 12 suffered the same delayed notifications ailment, but was remedied by the aforementioned adb command. Now my S22 Ultra gets Gmail/push notifications immediately and on time. So it might be the SoC that's to blame for some reason.
I like the Pixel 6 Pro, I really do. I enjoy Google's UI, the physical look of the phone, etc. but I cannot keep a phone that does not receive notifications on time. Is there a different adb command or a way to disable doze to get notifications on time on the Pixel 6 Pro?
And before anyone recommends it - yes I've tried not optimising Gmail, different email apps, and all the app workarounds - nothing works. Same applies for the S22 Ultra and all my previous Android phones. Only disabling doze allows for push notifications to come through on time.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm not keen on keeping this S22 Ultra, but will if there's no genuine workaround for disabling Doze on the Pixel 6 Pro.

Disabling battery optimization (long press app icon - app info - battery) essentially turns off doze for that particular app. If it's just emails/Gmail you're worried about, do that for the Gmail app. You'll theoretically get your emails on time, and the rest of your phone can zzzzzzzz in peace.
Also of note, Samsung changes a **** ton of the aosp code before using it for their OneUI ROM. It very well may be an Android 12 change than Samsung either reverted or did something else with.

You won't have to hook it up to your command prompt every time you reboot, either.
Why don't you simply disable optimisation for the apps you need instant notifications for? (Settings > Apps > [AppName] > Battery Usage > Unrestricted)
Again, I've tried that and it simply doesn't work.
I just sent myself an email after leaving 3 of my phones down, idling for 8 minutes. The S22 Ultra and iPhone 13 Pro received the email within 5 seconds of each other, and the Pixel didn't receive anything until I turned it on and unlocked it. Battery optimisation removal is the first thing I tried and it didn't work.
It's not doze then.
If the notion actions are driven through gservices, then that is another aspect of the problem that needs to be "not optimized".
Easiest and best way to solve this kind of problem is to use better software. Fairemail will deliver instant notifications and uses a direct IMAP connection rather than routing everything through gooble.

I get what you're saying, but you shouldn't have to use a different app to get notifications. Gmail should work within a reasonable amount of time. It's a problem if you have to turn on your phone for a notification to appear, especially from a Google app.
Op should do a factory reset. And during Android set-up, uncheck device settings (and apps for good measure). Turn off app optimization, and test it again.
But I've seen this issue on Android phones (and iPhones), and no one has ever actually resolved the issue. It seems like it's random when the issue occurs (or doesn't).
I have seen one user report that the adb command to disable doze does work on the Pixel 6 Pro. Not sure how accurate that report was though.
Maybe also try adb shell dumpsys deviceidle disable whitelist + <app package name>
You may want to check what app bucket the apps you want instant notifications for are in (Developer Options>Standby Apps). If they are in either Active or Working Set you "should" be getting notifications on time. If they aren't set to one of those categories you can try changing it to Active or Working Set, although the app may just change it back.

I assumed just like you that the problem is with doze .
But , after using the adb command everything works fine except Gmail.
So I replaced Gmail with other email client and now everything just fine.

If this was the case then wouldn't we all be seeing the same thing? When i order something off Amazon on my PC my Pixel 6 Pro goes off at the same time the email arrives on the PC even if i have not picked my phone up for some time.
There has been odd behaviour for some people with Gmail not doing notifications in push mode. Had this with my OnePlus device, but seen it reported for Google, Samsung and other devices for Android 11 and 12.
For some uninstalling the app and re-installing solved it, for others factory reset. Some could not get it to be resolved at all.
Some needed to sort the Google services app as well as Gmail.
It wasn't Doze that was causing the issue though.

Can you try this: Go to Settings, System, Users. Create a new user (just a brand-new google account with Fake Information (you can delete it later)). While logged into that profile, lock the phone. wait 10 mins. Then go to a different device and send an email to that new account. How long does it take for the email to come in? Turn off wifi and try it on mobile. Any difference?

Im on lineageos pixel 3xl. Have always used the dumpsys deviceidle disable command on previous phones with success. It was the only thing that worked. Battery optimization settings were never enough. Anyway, running the command also solved the problem on my pixel 3xl running lineages. Until about 2 weeks ago. I did recently install super freezze. Uninstalling it now. Will report back if it fixes my issue.

This is an issue with the introduction of doze. I can confirm that on every single Android phone I've used since doze was introduced "think it was marshmallow, could be wrong". I have experienced this issue with all my pixel phones up to 4xl, Galaxy s21 Ultra, and OnePlus 7 Pro and 8 Pro. Executing "dumpsys deviceidle disable" via rooted device in terminal or the adb command via computer fixes the issue 100% every time. I also experience no extra battery drain. Google simply needs to get rid of doze it's no longer needed. I carry an iPhone along with my android of choice and only when device idle is disabled do I get my notifications instantly just like I do without fail on my iphone. It's very depressing to have to jump through hoops to get important instant notifications on an Android phone.

well, first of all, I must admit that owning OP3 is one great experience. hardware is great and software feels so complete, that I have almost no need to root and/or install custom ROM. that being said, I'm still running stock OOS 3.1.2, as I can wait for better RAM handling and changing color balance slider to right-most position worked good enough for me regarding color balance.
but, I have a little issue with Doze:
I regularly have missed notifications, and some of them should really be high-priority and go through even in Doze.
basic example would be Viber call coming in. I could understand that Viber message is not reported immediately, but call should wake up device for sure.
I have used couple of other devices with Marshmallow before (Samsung with CM13 and Moto G3 with stock ROM), and neither of them had any issues with missed Viber calls nor messages.
now I put my phone on a table once I enter the office, or I just leave it once I'm at home, and I can be sure I'll have couple of missed Viber calls when I pick it up couple of hours later. that's not meant to be like that!
I know that I can exclude Viber from "Battery optimization", but I would not like to let Viber be completely and always active - I need just high-prio notifications.
also, I did not have to make any manual exceptions on CM13 and Motorola.
so, anyone else experiencing similar missed important notifications?
how did you handle this issue?
will some of upcoming OOS updates (3.1.3 or 3.1.4) address this issue?

You can disable Doze with this adb command to get your push notifications working . It won't survive a reboot, hence the command needs to be issued after every reboot.

I just installed OxygenOS 3.2.0.
It says in the description "Fixes some notification issues" and it seems to work now properly (at least for WhatsApp).

WhatsApp definitely had issues before the update. Some notifications came 10-15 minutes late. Now it seems to be working fine.
On OOS 3.1.3 I was experiencing delayed gmail notifications. Tried to change battery settings to exclude gmail from dozing without any success.
But then I cleared data for gmail (settings > apps > gmail > storage > clear data), forcing it to setup from scratch. And voilá, since then I am always getting my gmail notifications on time!
Just upgraded to OOS 3.2.0 and my gmail notifications still work as expected. I don't use Viber or WhatsApp, so I can't tell if clearing data would do the trick for them too.

It is not excluded from battery optimization, i.e. it work like it should: gmail sleeps in doze, but notifications are not delayed!

Unfortunately my gmail notifs stopped. Let the phone lay still and flat on desk for a while and sent a mail from my desktop. No notification on phone until I turn on the screen. :crying:
Tried to clear data again, but this didn't help.
Go to settings - battery. Tap the hamburger menu. Select battery optimization. Check if WhatsApp is mentioned in the list of NOT optimized apps. If it is not, add it together with any other app you wish to continue running during doze.

well, the test needs to be done just as you said. maybe some people are testing without giving the phone enough screen-off time. I will try and see what happens, since I am facing this issue both pre and after last update

Disable Doze
You can try to disable doze with the app called "Disable Doze" :good: in the Play Store, which prevents doze completely without root. I had problems with mail notifications which could not be solved by disabling battery optimizations. With the app it is solved now!
No need for this. On 3.2.6 you can turn off doze in the settings.
First off, I disabled adaptive battery in Android P. Ever since the upgrade from 8 to 9, I noticed that notifications are right around 5 minutes late. I have a couple time-sensitive apps that I need notifications right away. Gmail and another app for my home automation. In Android 8, the were flawless. However, ever since going to 9, not so much.
I also noticed that when I delete messages in the gmail app for gmail and an IMAP email server I have it does nothing with the messages on the server. I login to webmail from a computer and the messages are still in the Inbox.
Anyone have any ideas? I am going to try a wipe again to see if it resolves the issues, but I am out of ideas. I had the above issues in Android 9 beta as well. I would downgrade and it fixed them.
I have the same thing and it turns out it is a common issue with Pie. I have not found a solution yet. I have read all kinds of things people have tried and nothing seems to help. Sorry that I can't be more positive. Hopefully Google will figure something out and fix in an update.

You don't happen to have data saver in the quick tiles turned on by accident do you? That does prevent notifications from getting pushed. Both my parents had this on and a bunch of notifications came through after turning it off. I made sure to remove it from even being an available option.

been fighting with this issue as well, but it only seems to be gmail, and a couple other apps, my sms notifications seem to come through fine, at least as far as I can tell. I've turned off adaptive battery etc, nothing seems to make a difference. sometimes i can turn my screen on and all the notifications will come flooding in, other times they come through 10ish min later.

Made sure it was off early on. No change.
The best way to describe my issue is that once the screen times out and has been off for at least about 5 minutes, notification sounds are delayed. It is sort of like the phone goes into a deeper sleep or something and then the problem arises. As soon as I use my fingerprint to wake the phone, all notifications blast through.
The delay can vary. Sometimes it is only 15 minutes or so, but often it is much longer. It is almost like once in a while an app wants to call home or something and to do so wakes up the phone just enough to allow some notifications through.
There also seem to be some issues with individual apps and notifications that may be fixed when a developer updates their app for Pie. For example, most apps notify immediately when the screen is on or within that first 5 minutes or so after the screen goes off. But since installing Pie, Kuna always has a delay of 5 to 10 minutes before notifying. Kuna does this 100% of the time. In fact if I have the phone awake, looking at the screen when walking out the front door, when the motion sensor is triggered, immediately there is a notification icon. But the sound notification is always delayed. This seems like an issue with Kuna and they are well know for being very slow with updates and fixes but eventually they do fix things. But the notification sound delays described in this thread do indeed seem like a system issue with Pie. Hopefully enough people will have the issue that Google will figure it out and fix.
I am having same issues after updating to Android P. At first, notifications came late about 5 min, but then they started to vary some coming in 15-30 minutes later. Can't figure out what is causing the time difference but either way I can't find a fix. I spoke with Google support and they had no fix as well.

Nope, they didn't mention anything about existing issues or being aware of the issue.
Any one found any solutions or fixes? I feel like my notifications are becoming even more delayed now and have also realized I'm not getting a lot of various notifications at all (through many different apps).

Settings > Apps and Notifications > Advanced > Special App Access ..... Lots of options here with one of them being battery optimization for individual apps. After I upgraded to P, hardly any of my frequently used apps were given full battery use. One of the first things I tried was giving full useage, (no battery optimization) for all apps that I want notifications from. Did not help. Many other apps are still being optimized. I thought I had previously found a way to turn off all battery optimization but because I do have many apps in that list that are being optimized, I obviously did not. Right now I can't find a global setting to turn off battery optimization even though I thought I did before?
So I noticed this morning, that the main app/notification that's super delayed (5-10min after the event should have triggered) it doesn't happen when my phone is plugged in or i have the screen on in my hand. Even after going through all the battery save features and making sure this app is exempt from them, it still happens if the screen is off, or my phone is off the charger. super annoying. wish there was a fix for this already!

Verizon sent me a replacement because of this problem. I was apprehensive, but got a very nice re-furb. Still have the same problem, but I got a phone that is indicated as Verizon on the LG site. In developer mode, the bootloader unlock button works. I guess everything isn't bad. I sure hope Google straightens this out soon.

This happens only with Gmail on my phone - WhatsApp and Messages send instant notifications. Messages isn't optimized, the other apps are.
I can live with that, no big deal. Perhaps disabling battery optimization for Gmail would fix this, though.
Interesting note: I was talking to YouMail support today about something else but I asked about an issue where I get an email and transcript of a new voicemail but when I go to the YouMail app that voicemail is not shown until I drag down from the top of the screen to refresh the list. Support told me they are aware of this but can not do anything because it is a problem with the "latest Android version causing delay". So it is becoming a more widely known issue and hopefully Google will fix soon.
Thanks for all the feedback. Speaking of delay, I think I have tried just about every fix here and then some and still no luck. Wiping the phone did nothing as well. At this point, I would almost like to revert back to v8 to get this fixed.

No changes are needed, it is working off and on for people randomly. It stopped working for me for 4 days, then 2 days ago was fine again.
I've done manual syncing for a long time.
Sick of unreliable busy things running around in the background.
For the last couple months I've kept Google play Services* disabled unless I sync Gmail, I rarely use Gmaps or Playstore so I don't care.
My stock Note 10+'s battery usage is down to >7% an hour SOT using the Brave browser constantly. That means not only less charging but less strain on the battery out of the gate. I don't consider Google to be a trusted vendor so limiting it's access is a good thing.

I've had this issue with Android for quite some time now. With my S21 Ultra, all I had to do was disable doze with adb commands and never restart my phone. It was so nice getting email notifications at the same time as my iPhone.
I thought I could do the same with the OP9 Pro, but this isn't the case. I too have turned optimisation off, turned doze off, and keep the app open in the background - to no avail.
It's so sad to receive a notification on my iPhone that is fairly important to my business, only to get it anywhere between 10 minutes to several hours later on what is supposed to be my business cell. I'm unfortunately outside of the return window with the phone, otherwise this frustration would've lead me to another iPhone.

Activate Developer options>Standby apps, all buckets should show as active, if not power management is active!
Power management will cause erratic behavior.
You need to be up to speed to use an Android effectively.

So many people (including me) already mentioned this issue with Gmail notifications. It is definitely a bug and OnePlus is aware about it. Not sure when it will be corrected...
Waiting for an update, I recommend to use "Spark" app which is working good for all my mailboxes.

The beautiful thing about Android is there's almost always a 3rd party work around.
You're not locked in.
Glitches aren't uncommon, but most are small ones. Finding work arounds is a part of Android ownership... use it's flexibility to your advantage.
I thought I was the only one who had this problem.

A reboot a day seems reasonable...
Maybe 11.2.6.6 update fixed this problem, I don't have the problem for now.
Ok so i just got a 6 pro. Rooted day 1 before activation. Running Android 12. Seemed to work fine for a few days. Seemed.... So now my notifications are delayed or not coming thru at all unless i restart. My old phone was a Samsung Note 8 rooted as well. I wanted to get away from Samsung even though I loved the UI because my friend has a pixel 4 XL. Abd i loved how his phone had a better signal than mine, sane carrier and next to each other. Ive googled and watched yt vids to fix this issue. Nothing helps. It will work for 5 mins or 5 hrs then just stop. Even txt wont come thru on Signal. If i restart it will seeming work again. I rarely ever had to restart my Note 8. At this point i just want my brand new phone to work. Since the initial root i havent factory reset or wiped and reinstalled the root. Not sure what i should do first. Also not sure if going to 13 would fix this. Some stuff i read says yes and some stuff says 13 is buggy too. I wish i could put Android 11 on this phone and call it a day. Can anyone please help me? I dont wanna return my new phone.

Hi. Have you tried setting any of the particular apps for which you're having trouble with timely notifications to not being restricted from background usage? Long press the app icon / App info / Battery / Unrestricted. In App Info, you can disable "Pause app activity if unused" for those particular apps.
My wife and I have a lot less trouble with timely notifications on our Pixel phones than we did on our two Galaxy Note 10+ phones.
Yes. I've done all of that. I've set battery to unrestricted. Every tip I could Google. And it's still intermittent. It's driving me nuts. I just need this phone to work.

I've always had notification issues (late, none) since doze was first introduced. Every phone I've had I've had to run the following command to get notifications:
adb shell dumpsys deviceidle disable
The issue is, this command (which disables doze) has to be run each time the phone is rebooted. I use Tasker to run this script on my rooted P6P on each reboot (you can also use SManager). On my work phone (a non-rooted S10+) I have to open a command prompt and type the command.
I'm not an Android programmer or expert, but running this command has always worked for me. I realize disabling battery optimization and stuff is supposed to do the same thing, but that has been inconsistent, and some of my phones didn't provide the ability to change battery options for some apps.
Also, look for any rogue Magisk modules you have installed.

I too was having delayed notifications and could not for the life of me figure it out. Turns out it was NordVPN causing the issue. I changed the protocol from "Recommended" (assume that's NordLynx) to "OpenVPN (TCP)" and it fixed it right away!

Just asking a big favour really, as nothing else comes close to the specs I want I'd like to purchase a poco f5 again once these three issues are fixed:
Pocket mode not working
Memory management closing apps after a little while (despite being locked, set not to close, no power restrictions etc). Even play music app was being killed and Chromecast controls constantly...
Notifications delayed massively again despite the same changes as above point. 15-20+ minute delays.
Ps. I tried debloating and changing every setting I could find. I believe issue is due to MIUI powerkeeper dameon but removing that removes ability to set battery saving on apps at all.

And where did you experience all of those?
1. Pocket mode in recent Xiaomi devices are might not correctly working because of virtual proximity sensor I believe, cmiiw.
2. If you tried to keep a lot of apps running, of course some might have to be killed or put in a sleep state. You can't keep all the apps keep running in background.
3. This is the direct result from point above. Do note, apps use various method of receiving notifications, some rely on google service (mostly google apps, I believe this is most battery friendly way) while some manage the notifications themselves (this requires the app to be kept running in background, or occasionally given a queue by OS+kernel to be awaken periodically to receive the notifications)
tl;dr: if you want every apps to be as responsive as possible, you have to have a bigger ram and non stop power supply (not running in a battery)

I appreciate your help but this phone does have a proper proximity sensor, it's just not used in the software correctly for some reason. HW tests pass ok . I wouldn't have purchased this phone otherwise, I've had the misfortune of owning devices with the virtual one... Ugh... Never again.
Understood but the 12GB is not being fully used. If you remove power restrictions from these apps they should remain in memory and running in the cached / background state. Xiaomi powerkeeper which is in addition to the stock Android ROM appears to be closing apps regardless. All xiaomi cleaning or clearing options are disabled.
Indeed the applications in question are using Google's cloud messaging notification systems and it isn't an issue on aosp based ROMs on other phones even others in the house at the same time on the same network (doze active or not), but these custom ROMs aren't available for this phone yet.
I'd have probably kept it if the pocket mode worked but I draw the line at my phone dialing emergency numbers when locked in my pocket which happened within two days of ownership. In testing pocket mode didn't work correctly at all, seems others have the same problem.

Regarding about the proximity sensor, I need a confirmation from any owner of this device because it's failed to be mentioned by any reviews. Though elliptic labs didn't mention any Poco F5 and GSMArena might not properly mentioned it (their site mentioned Poco F4 not having a virtual one, while it does use one). Elliptic labs isn't the only one that supply such technology too. Please take a look in an app such "device info hw", see if it's reported as elliptic labs or Xiaomi sensor.
You could try Xiaomi.eu rom if you have already unlocked, though doubtful it will resolve the issue. Or you could try turning off MIUI optimization to see if that can turn off the aggressive doze on google service.

The phone got real proximity sensor. Verified by waving hands over the sensor and placing the phone stationary. The position of the sensor is in top right corner where the signals are shown in ui.

An easier way to check for the future is just to use another camera to check for emitted IR light when the screen is turned on.

I have the chines' model .
for notification : just disable com.miui.powerkeeper by typing the below in CMD command ( plz search for method)
pm disable-user --user 0 com.miui.powerkeeper
and you will receive the notification instantly for all apps .
Note: make sure to unoptimized the apps from battery optimization

I wonder if the Note 12 Turbo has the same problem. That had been out for quite a few months before this phone... I see the Note 12 Turbo Chinese firmware just had an update today.
