How to go GApps-less with this ROM?

Long story short, Google's blocked in China and my dad will be commuting back and forth to and fro from there, so he just wants to be able to use OOS but without GApps, like in China. Searched but couldn't really see any OOS-based ROMs that supported going GApps-less. Help?
I think I am missing the problem? If Google is blocked in China that just means he needs to sideboard his apps while he is there or wait till he is home to install. Why would you not install them? It's not like the phone won't work if Google services get blocked. Just use different search engines and/or browser and you should be fine.

Don't want to pay for one and it's annoying , plus he doesn't use Google Services a lot so what's the point of keeping the bloat

He's travelling back and forth a lot. And sideload apps do work, but **** like backup and the stuff that happen in the background won't work. Plus he just doesn't want the bloat or battery drain of GApps

If you're rooted you can uninstall them and if not just disable them from apps settings.

Doesn't help with the background stuff. I've tried disabling it on his Note 3, and it resulted in a loop of "com.process.google.gapps has crashed" and I want to avoid that. And I might as well just go without if I'm going to disable it.
How about flashing the Chinese ROM (Hydrogen OS)? Surely that one won't contain any of the Google services/apps. I'm based in China and have gone google-less for quite some time (even in Europe actually, those services are a huge drain and alternatives are available). There's 2 ways to get apps on the phone without using Google's Play store, 1) install Xiaomi/Huawei/... app store or 2) use Raccoon (search on XDA) to download apps from GPS on your PC and then side-load them on the phone. An even better solution is to install Raccoon on a server, have a script download the latest versions once a week, have a script erase the older versions and share the apk's through Nextcloud/OwnCloud/... with your phone (grats you've got your own app store )

Google Photos Unlimited Storage (pixel feature) for Nexus 5x

Hello i want to ask, especially rom developer
in Google nexus community indonesia
there are some people using this ROM for nexus 5x
http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/development/rom-euclidean-os-t3473622
and edit the build prop to pixel
got the recognize as pixel phone on google photos and get unlimited storage
https://plus.google.com/u/0/+BayuFauzi/posts/WzekibCvPRa?cfem=1
if someone can figure it out what makes that rom special and spoof google photos
maybe it can be ported to our nexus 5x too
thanks
Um, I think we have that option on PN 7.0 atm. At least last night I was looking at the settings of my photo album and had that option.
It shows in the attachment. But I am not sure if it truly is unlimited storage.

that is unlimited but the images that get uploaded is not on 'original' quality, instead it uploads 'compressed' version of the picture. Pixel is the only one with unlimited storage on 'original' quality.
For me it detects that my phone is pixel, and syncing original quality photos, but it is taking my drive space, and i can't change it to "high quality (compressed)".

Yes, but its eating up my drive space
It must be combination of build.prop and meta data in photos...
My friend, u can get the unlimited storage for photos in any Android devices or any Android versions or roms!!!!!, it just depends on the quality of photo backup sync that u choose, if u choose the original quality you will have only the rest of the original free storage that google gave u (15g) but if u choose to back up only with the high quality instead of the original quality you will get the unlimited free storage automaticaly!!!!

Yeah but that's not what he was asking for. He's asking about the possibility of unlimited original quality like the Pixel but on our 5X.

OP5T Arrives Today: Going 100% Google-less. Some questions...

Hello! Long (LONG!) time lurker. Decided to finally make an account today to ask you guys some questions...
My OnePlus 5T will be arriving today, and I plan to immediately flash FreedomOS - and wish to go as Google-less as possible.

A few years ago I heard about a way for the YouTube app to function without the Google Play Services. Is this still possible? I want to go completely without GApps, etc.
So far my plan(s) for application replacements are as follows:
1. Google Maps -> HERE WeGo
2. Google Drive -> Dropbox
3. Google PlayStore -> Use raw APKs downloaded from the internet + Aptoide + F-Droid
4. Google Calendar -> Etar or DigiCal
5. Google Photos -> QuickPic
6. SMS -> Signal
Anything I'm missing?
With that being said- Is there really any need for me to download/flash any GApps, whatsoever?
What are the benefits on going without gapps?

Better buy an iPhone then no ?
I mean even if you completely remove all Google apps, you pay a small percentage of the phone price to Google, then you're using AOSP but still coded by Google. Then by watching YouTube you're completely in the Google system too, and watching ads gives them money too.
So you want to do this the hard way ? Buy an iPhone, use Bing, stop watching YouTube.
There's no point just breaking android by removing Google services and play store...

I just edited my message to give you some advices on some apps, but there's also a debate over buying an Android and in the same time do not want to support Google...
Do whatever you feel
Some apps are really broken when you don't have Play Services. Except crashes and missing features.
Also if you watch YouTube in browser (I suppose you won't use chrome then) you'll be limited to 480p.

I'm aware that some apps will not function correctly. I can work around that. I'm not concerned about that.
As far as the YouTube app hack is concerned, it is not a part of a browser. It is a hacked version of the YouTube app. Completely different, and is fully functional.
I have several years of experience developing/modding android, and I'm sure I will do just fine without GApps.
I am simply here asking about the old YouTube app hack method, and seeing if I am forgetting any baser level GApp.
Thanks so much for your... help...
I use iYTBP for my YouTube app as it features a black design, no ads and background listening. Not sure if it will work without Play Services but you can still try it.
Your welcome for my ...help...
Less condescension can work too.
You can use microG to spoof the Google services (at least in YouTube's case) and use iYTBP (google it, read the xda post and download from their website). Otherwise you could try NewPipe.
You don't need another SMS app, the phone comes with one from OnePlus by default.
It also has a gallery application from OnePlus, so you should avoid QuickPic (as it is pretty much adware).
You could also try to look for a HydrogenOS image on the chinese OnePlus website, but I'm not sure if any have been posted. That way you won't even need to get rid of the Google apps, as there are none.

Oh wow is QuickPic really that bad? I've never tried it, but reading all about it, it seemed nice.
That's a shame.
Thanks for the notice about NewPipe by the way, I totally forgot about that!

FreedomOS does not give you the ability to remove all Google apps.
I flashed H2OS and microg as soon as I got the phone.

Holy cow. I don't know of a more helpful or relevant post reference. Thank you so much for this!
The built in apps are pretty bad. Gallery is very limited. Messages is crippled. Dialer has a bug in it and Contacts is a bit wonky.
I put the Google apps back ON and disabled the built in apps.
You can also replace Chrome with Brave

Totally off-topic, but I purchased a phone from you on Swappa last year. LG G6 for $475.
Edit: Not last year. Got it on June 21, 2017.
Edit2: How funny is that... Small world. Nice to see you around.
I mean you can still use the YouTube app and I have ads if you use the Xposed app to install YouTube adaway molecule to be completely ad-free

Question [FIXED] Any method to get Unlimited Google Photos backup?

Just rooted my Pixel 6 pro and was trying to find a way to get unlimited Google Photos storage but none of the methods I used before work on this device. Does anyone know how I can get the unlimited storage (or if it's even possible).
* I tried the props editor method which did not work as the props that I needed to edit did not exist (or maybe its different)
* The other method where you place a nexus file in the root directory was not possible as the root directory was full, even after deleting some system apps.
UPDATE - The pixelify magisk module is the solution (thanks taanh1412 !)
Use the Pixelify Magisk module
Are you nuts? You need to PROTECT your data from gooble, not give them more!

They probably know more about me than I know about myself already, how much more could they possible learn?
Also I cannot live without the facial grouping now, it's way too useful

Magic Eraser is available with Google One subscription on all devices (including non-Pixels). No need for anything else.
Unlimited Original Quality backup is available ONLY on Pixel 1 (the 1st Pixel). The others until Pixel 5 get unlimited storage at 'Storage Saver' quality.

Yes I understand it.
I flashed Pixelify and have now Unlimited Original Quality on my Pixel 7 Pro. And I have Google One subscription, which in theory should provide the Magic Eraser, but this does not happen. I my GPhotos app is version 6.34, so it up to date.

You are right. I had to wait few hours and the Magic Eraser appeared in the "Tools" section. On the other hand there is no "Unlbur" so, the former must be related wit Google One subscription, as spoofing as Pixel 1 gives unlimited backup but as a trade off disables newer Pixels features.
