I go into a thread, and click to search the thread and it takes me to a search outside of the thread for the entire fkng forums.
I noticed this the other day and thought it was me being stupid. Super annoying

Ah ok, so now you have to memorize or copy the thread name so you can go out of it to search a bunch of fields to find a keyword in that thread. Very inconvenient.
It's definitely a pain for now! I prefer my Chrome browser Google Search until there's a better way on XDA...

We're talking about the "search this thread" button, which straight up doesn't work
OP, I agree. The new format is annoying. However, it does work, once you figure it out. It took me awhile:
1. Click on "Search This thread" (top right, if you are on desktop)
2. Click the "X" to close the search suggestions.
3. Now you can actually search the thread.
wow, thanks between the two hints and my experimenting, i now understand both of workarounds for the crappy implementation of search this thread function.
summarizing in either method of tapping "search this thread" button or the top of page search box switched from "everywhere" to "this thread"...
must use the "search" button instead of magnifying glass to run the search (don't hit enter on kb either).
this means for "search this thread" button, must tap the X to close the stupid sitewide search result suggestions, to be able to see that "search" button. (also for top of page search if zoom extends it too far down)
hope that helps.

the google search method seems like an unnecessary hassle since the built in "search this thread" functions as expected (as long as you make sure to X out of the suggested results and tap the search button (don't hit enter or use the magnifying glass button).

Many forums are the same way.
No big deal... make use of those nasty webcrawlers
XDA really screwed up the implementation of search in Xenforo.
It can be so much better/easier with a few tweaks.
Xenforo 2.0 had a better search out-of-the-box but 2.2 can be made better with just a few clicks.
I really dislike the Xenforo they built here.
I'll actually search Google for help before I come here and search XDA.
And I would pay a dollar if XDA would add a roll-eyes "like" option.
LOL it could be useful!

Hi xda-dev,
I just thought if we could have us thread owners to have a standard button design for a specific thread that we can use/link in our blog post or websites?
Just a thought ..
And, while on the subject: Is an RSS feed going to be made avail in new version ?

I think that's a great idea. But could you clarify: Are you speaking of the same basic concept on news sites where various social-media icons are avail to auto-repost? (twitter, digg, etc)... Or do you mean a button that performs the action of copying the thread's link & title to the clipboard, then being able to paste it anywhere on your own site, manually, into a blog post etc?

SLIGHTLY OFF-TOPIC:
I'm WAY behind the curve in using twitter, and how it integrates with what seems like 1000 different twitter-based apps... And twitpics, i'm even less clear on how and WHEN to use it, and if it's used WITH twitter, or a parallel service to twitter for just sharing photos in real time.
ON-TOPIC
So I'm not clear if your posting that image on twitpic is literally an example what you want to be able to do, or are you saying there are apps for either phone or desktop computer that will generate a template graphic as well a specific thread title linked? So, in your picture, is the thread title generated as part of the graphic itself? Or is the thread title displayed in HTML on top of the template graphic?
I am really confused but I like the way it looks! please explain further...
Okay, so now I see this, in your prior sig file.. and I see that it is a graphic that gets generated with the title of the thread rendered as part of the image... so i just have never seen these used -- but I love the idea...
So for this example here:
tell me how that gets generated -- at http://www.twitstamp.com ? and then when you apply that generated graphic, how do you also code the link to the thread, in this example?
even more confused and feeling so behind the times !
well whaddayaknow -- this looks like a pretty cool web app ! ---
so are you speaking of ...
(1) You're here at XDA-devs, and you're on, for example, this very thread...
(2) You'd like to see a simple small graphical button, as part of "thread tools" or somewhere within the thread page layout, that when you click on it, it grabs the Title of the thread, and the link, copies it to pasteboard...
(3) then you go to a site like, for example, TwitStamp.com, and insert what's on the pasteboard into the "input box" at Twitstamp...
(4)... thereby generating a graphic with link that can be embedded anywhere on a webpage etc, exactly as you would grab embed code from a YouTube video, or from a photo at photobucket.com, stuff like that?
(5) Is this kind of small-file-size "picture status" thing being rapidly used as a way to post updates, but using twitpics? So that after you generate the graphic, you post it to twitpics? And those who subscribe to your feeds can see "oh cool, that sounds like an interesting thread, i want that for my phone"... and so they would click on it and link to the thread here at XDA?
even more confused by all the permutations of pasting what where... hah hah.
Is this what you mean exactly, or is it close, or is this just one of many examples of what you are envisioning?
sounds & looks interesting....

Dear admins/website developers,
It would be a really nice feature to be able to rate a post.
-1 off topic/offensive
0 off topic/irrelevant
+1 on topic
+2 on topic/informative
+3 on topic/must read
Something like that. They use it on the dutch website tweakers.net and it's really handy.
By filtering out the off topic posts. You have a much cleaner view of the thread.
The user is free to choose the level of rating. For example I wan't to read the "thank you's".
I set the viewing level to 0 offtop/irrelevant.
But if I would be a developer I would set it to +1 or +2, so I could easily read up on new developements users have made or requested.
Ofcourse the rating of the posts has to be done by users themselves.
And they themself have to be rated as well (their credibilty).
If one user A rates a post -1, but five other users rate that post +1. The credibilty of user A goes down.
I think this is a really nice way to clean up a thread.
Popular rom threads get spammed so fast with "thank you's" and/or questions, that there's hardly keeping up with the actual developing discussion, bug reports, fixes, etc.
Cheers,
Daan

I know but I don't think it's appropriate to report a "thank you" post
What I meant was, viewing a thread on different levels.
Normal, informative and developement. Or somethng like that.
Now that I think about it you could indeed skip the -1 and just report offensive posts to the mods.
Mods will still have to remove it. Not a big deal ofcourse, probably takes 2 minutes.
But with the system above that is no longer necessary. Users become the mods in a way.
Cheers,
Daan

Nothing wrong with reporting "Thanks" posts in my opinion. I do it all the time. Dev threads get cluttered up enough without having newbies clutter it up with "Thanks" or "ETA?".

That's exactly what I mean.
Wouldn't it be nice if you, the user, could mod the post.
That way you won't have those annoying cluttered up threads anymore.
The posts are still there, but you filter them out to your own needs.
I think the biggest issue with your idea (which I like, btw) is the server overheads. You're basically asking for every single thread to have its own dedicated view. I've seen similar types of features in sites like Stack (I use Stack Overflow quite a lot) and it works very well for them, but they're not forums - they're purely Q&A sites and they discourage discussion. While that difference is not particularly pertinent to your suggestion I do think you're thinking of this site more along their terms.
The mods are there for a reason, and as tedious as it may be, cleaning threads is one of their tasks. Just report things that are out of place.

A quick fix would be to use the XDA Toolbar for Chrome. You can collapse posts, sigs, and images. It's probably going to be more to your liking than us telling you that XDA isn't going to implement this feature.
[20-Dec-11] XDA Toolbar for Chrome v1.7
I agree with the report button... Cause a mod can review it to see if it needs to be removed.. If they did it the way your talkin about.. Things could get messy since some new guys or someone wanted to be not a nice person could just down rate your thread for no reason at all... Which does happen from time to time.. I have no idea why when a bunch of others love it.

New users should not be able to mod posts yet.
There should be a rating system for the users themselves, as stated in the first post.
If user A rates posts -1 while 5 others rate +1, then eventually user A won't be able to mod posts anymore.
Well, I guess I'll have to use the report button more often and more aggressively.
It was just an idea.

Daan

Whahaha, I can see the connection.
Nice work on the toolbar!
kind of similar request: how about keeping it simpler, and have the ability to filter a thread so it shows only "thanked" posts? I think this would be extremely useful, and although I know very little of programming, it shouldn't be difficult? This way for example if I'm in a custom Android ROM thread, instead of searching or reading through posts, you just filter out the questions and other "less useful" posts and get straight to the answers or the more useful/interesting ones.
Sorry if this had been requested before (or if there already is the ability to do it..... ) but just saw this thread and thought I'd jump in

The post rating system only exists in the Galaxy Nexus forum at the moment and has been there a while now.
I'm not too sure about it though because I figured there would be buttons to click to rate the post up or down.
I couldn't understand how simply showing that message (one in screenshot) would solve anything.

From orb's response they don't care. He suggests in an offhand way to install another browser other than internet explorer.
I'll forward this to our Server admin and if there is a problem to solve XDA will do the best to fix it as usual.

1. The problem is unchanged for me; I am still seeing the issue, where (just for the sake of clarity):
"the issue" == a. hitting the back-button doesn't appear to change the displayed page when viewing any page of xda-developers.com with Internet Explorer;
b. depending on what page you are viewing, hitting the back-button might or might not change the IE history-list that you see when you click on the little blue triangle to the left of the URL entry text-box drop-down. Ditto for the IE history-list that you see in the IE history "explorer bar" that you get when you choose to "View By Order Visited Today."
I am using IE 9.0.8112.16421.
Note 1: FWIW, my browser doesn't seem to go to any pages in the domain that is the title of this thread. The unexpected pages in my history list (and there are LOTS of them) are all in one of the two following domains: statc.liftdna.com and mediaservices-d-openxenterprise.com.
Note 2: The title of this thread doesn't really help very much those people who are searching for answers to the problem that the back-button doesn't work. Since there seems to be almost a fetish on this forum about the pleasures of searching for previous posts, perhaps the title of the thread can be changed so that more people (and apparent non-people such as newbies like me) will get more satisfaction from their searches?
Note 3: there is another thread on the same topic that someone has opened up (appropriately enough) in the forum:
AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Q&A.
The thread is called "IE Back Button within forums".
Being a newbie, I can't post in such a development forum and point him to here.

Ah - my bad. Yeah, it creates a new search each time. I had seen it and assumed (stupidly) that it was just a search by user ID.

You can do this by going to the forum home, choosing Advanced Search, typing in your username, making sure the "Search All Open Forums" and "Show Results as Threads" selections are highlighted. The default sort order of the results is last threads with a post are at the top.

Is there a way to do a search only in the oneplus 9 pro forum? The filter is not enough, and the xda search does not permit to do it (or I missed it).

Did you try the "search" field and changed from "Everywhere" to "This forum"?
The new forums are ****. I don't know what the hell they were thinking. Sub categories are clearly superior by far.

Nope, that's what I missed.
Thanks a lot
I can't stand this new forum layout. I'm just trying to see if there's any ROM's or kernels for this device and I cannot find the right section. Would have taken me less than 2 minutes on the old forums.
I never buy a day one smartphone so I don't know if it's normal or not (it's not a criticism at all) but is it normal that a month after the release there is still no TWRP and ROM development with this device?

There's no way to do it with the XDA mobile app that I can find. I also haven't found a way to watch/follow only specific filters the way I previously followed subforums (e.g. get alerts only when someone posts a new thread in Development or Themes/Mods).

I'm wondering the same thing. The last new phone I bought was the OP7P and development had already taken off before I even got my phone. At this point I'm starting to wonder if any devs are even working on anything for this phone.

I apologise I don't use the app. Maybe someone knowledgable knows in this thread:
Check out the new XDA app! Let us know what you think [App rolling out now]
The new app is just an upgrade to the current XDA app, so you should be able to just go into Play and hit "Update" https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.xda.labs.play The app is rolling out now, and will take hours to get to...

They are
But there are challenges. Like being the first to create a custom Linux 5.4.y kernel, etc...
