Android 13 will disable all haptics in Silent modeGoogle recently dropped the first Android 13 developer preview release for its Pixel devices. We’ve already talked about some of the new features and changes coming in the next big Android upgrade in our original coverage, but Android 13 DP1 has a lot more to offer. A closer look at the build has revealed a few features that Google didn’t mention in its announcement post, including a Gboard-like clipboard auto clear feature, a Camera Obfuscator app, and two new home screen layouts for the Pixel Launcher. But that’s not all. Android 13 DP1 also includes a change that disables all haptics in silent mode.
For the unaware, Android currently doesn’t completely disable haptics when you switch to Silent mode. While the haptics for incoming calls and messages are disabled, those for interactions, like gesture navigation, button presses, etc., continue to work. But that changes with Android 13. If you switch to Silent mode on Android 13 DP1, all haptics (including those for interactions) are disabled (via Esper).
Interestingly, the “Vibration & haptics” setting is grayed out when you switch to Silent mode on Android 12L. It also shows a warning that says, “vibration & haptics are unavailable because [the] phone is set to silent.” However, haptics for interactions continue to work in the Silent mode. This changes in Android 13, though, and all haptics are disabled as soon as you turn on Silent mode. This is a minor yet welcome change that will help users avoid all distractions in silent mode. It’s a handy option for those who like to use their phones in the dead of night when even the slightest vibrations can cause a disturbance.

I'm coming from a Oneplus One and have always scheduled my phone to priority notification at night!
Can't seem to find the setting for the same on my oneplus 3! Am I missing something or does OnePlus want us to do it manually every night with the physical toggle which doesn't make sense at all.!![emoji36] [emoji35]

Completely agree with you. I like the slider, but coming from a Nexus 5 where I've also scheduled my Do Not Disturb nightly I don't want to and am not going to remember to slide to Priority every night...
I read an argument about it not appearing as you could have conflicts in the slider saying one thing and the software another, but still... I think that can be overcome, the software just overrides the button until the next slide...
I would say that this is the worst design "bug" in OxygenOS on the OP3 I have seen and I hope that OP rethink their decision to just completely remove the DND function from Android which, frankly, is just a lazy implementation.
@Nooner, the software should never override the button. The hardware slider should always have precedent. However, OP could have left the DND function in and then just limited the minimum user DND setting to the slider setting. At least then the user could still use the quick setting pull-down, or the nightly auto schedule etc, e.g. to set to priority mode even when the slider is still in normal position.
I would rather not have the slider and just use the quick setting pull-down given how in-frequently I use it and given I have now lost the auto rules.

exactly, the software should have authority over dnd schedules and hardware toggles should be able to override it if toggled manually by the user.... its PITA to do it after I'm already disturbed once every night since I bought the OP3! [emoji36]

I really like my new Oneplus 3, even its size, which I thought would be unbearable. But after using it for a couple days I have at last found something that I really dislike. From what I can tell, the do not disturb settings from vanilla Android have been nixed in favor of the alert slider. Thus one cannot automate times during which, say, the phone allows no notifications or allows only priority level notifications. Nor can do not disturb settings be activated from, say, a widget on the device: the alert slider must be used for everything. I presume the reason is that they don't want the settings to conflict with the slider (eg, going into a do not disturb mode when the slider is in the bottom most position).
However, I would like to be able to control these things from software. Is there any solution involving rooting? The only thing I don't want to do is install a new ROM (I don't want to lose the dash charging).
I am really interested about this too. Loosing the automated acttions such as DnD and Night mode are a setback for me.
Are there any ROMs out there which have at least tackled the DnD issue? The slider could be used then for something else (lock portrait mode, lamp light etc...)
Most apps and widgets I've tried since posting simply don't work, with one exception. I've found that the app Do Not Disturb by Cabooze (sorry, can't link) replicates the missing functionality and seems to mute notifications even when the alert slider is set in the bottom position. This is really not ideal (I would trade the alert slider for stock do not disturb in a second) but is an adequate stop gap.
Thanks for the info, that app seems to be working. But the feeling is the same. I fee like back in the days the function did not exist in stock, looking for tricks/apps and wondering if what I found will be reliable... still hoping we see soon solid custom roms which also offer a solution for all the missing automation.
You can surely use tasker for this...
i've designed an Alert Slider software override (non-root) for the OnePlus 3 (probably works on the newer OnePlus phones as well) It allows for scheduled setting of sound profiles. Need some advice on interest and how to Beta release.

I had vibration disabled for SMS in Android Messages but they're now all vibrating even though that setting is still disabled. Setting it to enabled and disabled again does not resolve.
Looks like each individual contact has its own vibration setting which is not changing based on the global app setting. It appears that we would need to disable vibration for every contact individually, which is potentially thousands of screen taps.
As notification settings have changed in Oreo and this only happened after the 8.0.0 update I have to assume it's a bug with the OS.
Am I overlooking another way to disable vibration for SMS or have you experienced the same thing?
Either the Google design team were drunk or this a bug; this is a horrendously stupid design.
It's worse than just SMS too, if you have an app with no explicit option to control vibration, you can not turn it off.
I upgraded to Android 8 just 3 days ago and I'm about to clean slate my phone and go back to v7.
They seriously need to add a global option for vibration.
hey gang,
I just got a Pixel 2XL and for Gmail and WhatsApp even though I've got vibration off in the system settings as well as in the app, the damn thing still vibrates when a notification comes in.
This happens on both mine and my brothers 2XL, are we missing a trick?
I've tried to reset app settings but issue persists.

Thanks!
Also happening here... I have spent many hours but haven't found a solution
So the way I found around this is to turn off vibration under Accessibility > Vibration and haptic strength.
Not ideal but it works and the phone will still vibrate if a call comes in.

Did you try switching off the vibration from WhatsApp settings -> Notifications -> Vibrate?
Oops, I see that you have already tried that. Never mind!

Hey guys, finally I've come to a solution after hours of searching and experimenting.
For your information I'm using a Pixel 2 XL running stock Android 10 December build (latest).
I narrowed down the problem by making notification tests with apps other than WhatsApp, like Telegram and Messages (from Google).
The problem:
When setting WhatsApp's notification preference to "Silent" (in Android's App info) - having WhatsApp own settings to no vibration neither sound - the very next message received will turn "Silent" option back to "Alerting". This will make phone vibrate (if phone on vibration mode), regardless of your preference of no vibration.
Note that this problem occurs only when phone is on vibration mode.
It happens with WhatsApp and Telegram but doesn't with Messages, making it clear that it's a bug of the app and not of Android itself.
The solution:
1) Adjust WhatsApp's own settings as your wish (if your reading this probably you don't want group message vibration neither sound).
2) Open Android's App Info and tap Notifications
3) Select group or message notifications
4) KEEP IT ALERTING
5) Choose Advanced
6) Tap Sound, then My Sounds
7) Choose None
8) Save
That's it.
It seems to me that faulty apps like WhatsApp and Telegram are currently not able to set None value to the notification sound. And, since Android turns sound to vibration when on vibrate mode, those apps will vibrate regardless of user setting.
The procedure described above will ultimately set None sound directly to Android system, shortcutting the apps poor programming.
Thanks for reading this and please give feedback whether it helped you.
Simply turning on my phone from wake cycle activates a random app.
For example it may open a quick dial app and call someone or it may open gmail or it may open the calendar.
For some reason simply waking it up is like pressing my finger onto a selection on my phone.
I have the latest April 5 security on Android 10 but it also did this when I was on March security and Android 9.
I did flash.all with latest bin hoping that would fix it but nope.
