I had vibration disabled for SMS in Android Messages but they're now all vibrating even though that setting is still disabled. Setting it to enabled and disabled again does not resolve.
Looks like each individual contact has its own vibration setting which is not changing based on the global app setting. It appears that we would need to disable vibration for every contact individually, which is potentially thousands of screen taps.
As notification settings have changed in Oreo and this only happened after the 8.0.0 update I have to assume it's a bug with the OS.
Am I overlooking another way to disable vibration for SMS or have you experienced the same thing?
Either the Google design team were drunk or this a bug; this is a horrendously stupid design.
It's worse than just SMS too, if you have an app with no explicit option to control vibration, you can not turn it off.
I upgraded to Android 8 just 3 days ago and I'm about to clean slate my phone and go back to v7.
They seriously need to add a global option for vibration.

I searched but so far nothing helped.
I have had the phone for about a week and up until this morning the phone would always vibrate for a text and a call (even in silent mode) in which I had the settings. Starting today (this afternoon) I would only get vibration during a call and not a text. I checked the settings and it's still the same (VIBRATE on ALL in the main settings) and VIBRATE when receiving notifications for GOPROSMS.
What seems to be the problem? No matter what I do it won't vibrate during a text even after I restarted the phone, pulled the battery, etc.
Thanks
open both SMS apps
the stock SMS app, and the Go SMS app
verify each of their notification settings
nope still doesnt work
but I deleted GoProSMS and downloaded handcent SMS and now the vibration works even though all the settings in GOPROSMS were correct.
I looked it up and it seems that GOPROSMS was updated today, may that have caused the problem?
Same here, I have pretty much messed with all the settings and now after uninstalling go sms the notifications seem to still not work.
i'm using Go SMS as well, but it vibrates fine for me
I learned that vibrate does not work for me unless I leave haptic feedback on at maximum. the lower haptic feedback is, the weaker your vibrate..I usually don't like haptic feedback but it seems like it has to go hand and hand with vibrate.
that's explains why i didn't have the issue, i always have it on, to the max
and i always enable vibrate on any app that supports this feature
personally it makes the phone feel more realistic
it's probably an addition from the PS2 controllers with vibration
Has anyone noticed that Whatsapp seems to override the "Do Not Disturb" aka DND settings?
I keep getting popups even though I have "Alarms only" DND activated. I do not get sounds but only the popup which activates the screen and lights up the room.
I also noticed that if I set settings-->notifications-->whatsapp notification to Level -1 (as in no notifications) I still get popups, usually the second msg from the same person activates the popup and screen lights up.
I also tested my wife's phone Mi5 with RR nougat as well and same occurs with her phone so it is not a phone thingy but rather a broken DND by android/LOS or RR bug.
Could someone test this with their phone and with another rom perhaps?
Steps to reproduce:
1. Set phone to DND (alarms only) and check that Whatsapp does not override dnd settings (settings-->notifications-->whatsapp)
2. Turn screen off and use another phone to send whatsapp messages (from 1 to several).
3. Check if you get popup messages from whatsapp.

Am I the only one using DND and whatsapp here?
Hello. I had this issue as well, perhaps it is indeed a problem with DND and heads up notifications, as I was surprised when I activated DND and still got WhatsApp notifications.
You can always disable notifications per app, but that's not a proper solution. On the other hand there is an option in Settings->Sound->Do not disturb, which allows you to customize certain aspects like what should it block. That was the solution for me, there is an option to block all visual disturbances with screen on or off, however this may be an option not available in the stock ROM (I'm using Dirty Unicorns, curious name, awesome ROM). Still look for the option in your settings :victory:

Cheers mate for the reply.
Unfortunately I have that setting already enabled, so all visual disturbances should be blocked when screen is off. But if that setting works for you in DU, then perhaps my Z2 RR has a bug and as well Mi5's RR.
I bet this is not a ROM issue but rather WA or Android issue cos the same thing happens with RR, AEX and iirc AICP.
I would like the default vibration for a new message to be more noticeable. So I went in and changed the pattern in the settings. It didn't seem to change. Then I went and changed the pattern for that individual contact and still no change. Am I missing something. Plus the reminder vibration a minute later is just one short vibration.
Are you using the built-in app (Messages) for texting? Or is this in a different app (texting app or what's app, etc...)
I am using the built in message app. I need to because of poor reception at work and use the wifi calling to send messages. I contacted Samsung and they said the OS a software issue allowing the vibration changes to work.
hey gang,
I just got a Pixel 2XL and for Gmail and WhatsApp even though I've got vibration off in the system settings as well as in the app, the damn thing still vibrates when a notification comes in.
This happens on both mine and my brothers 2XL, are we missing a trick?
I've tried to reset app settings but issue persists.
2XL
android 10 - build QQ1A.191205.008 - fresh install
Thanks!
Also happening here... I have spent many hours but haven't found a solution
So the way I found around this is to turn off vibration under Accessibility > Vibration and haptic strength.
Not ideal but it works and the phone will still vibrate if a call comes in.

Did you try switching off the vibration from WhatsApp settings -> Notifications -> Vibrate?
Oops, I see that you have already tried that. Never mind!

Hey guys, finally I've come to a solution after hours of searching and experimenting.
For your information I'm using a Pixel 2 XL running stock Android 10 December build (latest).
I narrowed down the problem by making notification tests with apps other than WhatsApp, like Telegram and Messages (from Google).
The problem:
When setting WhatsApp's notification preference to "Silent" (in Android's App info) - having WhatsApp own settings to no vibration neither sound - the very next message received will turn "Silent" option back to "Alerting". This will make phone vibrate (if phone on vibration mode), regardless of your preference of no vibration.
Note that this problem occurs only when phone is on vibration mode.
It happens with WhatsApp and Telegram but doesn't with Messages, making it clear that it's a bug of the app and not of Android itself.
The solution:
1) Adjust WhatsApp's own settings as your wish (if your reading this probably you don't want group message vibration neither sound).
2) Open Android's App Info and tap Notifications
3) Select group or message notifications
4) KEEP IT ALERTING
5) Choose Advanced
6) Tap Sound, then My Sounds
7) Choose None
8) Save
That's it.
It seems to me that faulty apps like WhatsApp and Telegram are currently not able to set None value to the notification sound. And, since Android turns sound to vibration when on vibrate mode, those apps will vibrate regardless of user setting.
The procedure described above will ultimately set None sound directly to Android system, shortcutting the apps poor programming.
Thanks for reading this and please give feedback whether it helped you.
Hi all. I have CN rom (Tencent Games label). I previously had a Galaxy S21.
I have discovered that many of the frequent apps I use don't notify me well on this RM6. For messaging, I expect a sound, a screen wakeup, and a badge on the lockscreen for apps like FB Messenger, WhatsApp, Outlook Email, etc. How can I get this happening on the RM6?
I also note that when I am in a voice-call on Whatsapp, that after the lockscreen timeout ends, the headphones (speakers and mic) stop working through the lockscreen. But if I unlock, the app (and open voice call) are still there.
I feel like the lockscreen is main issue, but I cannot see any suitable options to change the settings.
Help?
Regards, Sirdiver
i've the same issue in EU Rom, it's a software problem and for sure it will be fixed in the upcoming updates.
Same issue here.
Has this been fixed ?
The biggest issue i am facing right now with this lockscreen is not able to see who is calling me through normal phone call and WhatsApp call. The screen does not showing any details of the caller & keep blank until i unlock the screen. The notification settings on redmagic is so confusing with so unnecessary options. The worst part, after cracking my head configured with so many settings only for the notifications, it doesn't working as expected. Waste of time
Do any of you guys face not having notification icons on the Always-On Display? Not able to fix this issue after tweaking most of the settings and the phone has already been updated to the latest version.
