[Q] startup apps

hey all
another question for me today...
my g2 has been slowing down quite a bit lately. almost ready to root. but first i wanted to see if i can deal with this a bit longer.
first things first, i've read plenty of posts and articles, even a thing from cyanogen himself i believe that said that taskkillers are worthless in the android operating system. that being said, according to an app i just installed called "startupcleaner2.0" i have 42 apps loading at startup. my g2 takes almost 5 minutes to boot. some of these apps are of course required apps and system things, things that i absolutely need, but then there are things like, "CardioTrainer," an app i've never even used but would like to check out sometime, or "G4" which i see no reason why it should need to run until i run it myself, or "HootSuite" which I don't even use (I just use the separate facebook and twitter apps) but just haven't gotten around to uninstalling yet.
i have plenty of space left on my sd card, and really don't want to uninstall all these extra apps because i'd like to try them at sometime, and if i don't like them then delete them (and some apps like for example, G4, i REALLY don't want to install cause i do use them, just see no reason for them to start at startup). so, should i actually make use of this StartUpCleaner2.0 and have it stop these apps from running? or is it the same situation as the supposedly useless (and potentially bad for your phone taskkillers) where it's sort of counterproductive to the way android is meant to be managed?
thanks for your input. it just seems lame that with all this space there should be a limit to the amount of apps i can have installed for my phone to run good. but if that really is the case i'll uninstall some (i just did a sweep of like 20 apps/games i never used). if not, then i'll give this StartUpCleaner2.0 a try and stop pretty probably half of these things from starting at startup.

P.S. You may always thank me afterwards when you have concluded that installing a app killer did not help you in any way improving your battery life.

You might use watchdog or titanuim backup to freeze those apps so they can't run at all while still leaving them installed. That's what I'd do, or use a startup/autorun manager.
I use Autorun Manager since I use the apps, just don't want them running at boot because like you pointed out, it increases boot times.

you know i think that is one of the things i had read telling me not to use task killers which is why i stopped using them. but there's still the fact that my phone is sluggish now with lots of apps installed in a way that it wasn't when i first got it. and i refuse to believe it's sluggish just from "having them installed" even if i'm not using them ... if that's the case, then android REALLY doesn't do a great job of shutting down tasks and whatnot on its own...
also i wasn't considering using a task killer exactly, it was something to stop apps from running at startup in the first place. especially apps that i simply don't use at all but apparently are loading.

I use the Autostarts app for the same thing, disabling apps on startup. It can help with boot times a little, but honestly it doesn't make too much of a difference. One of the problems now is that many apps that start on boot don't show up in Autostarts and other autorun manager type apps, so you can't control their boot priority. I think this started in 2.3.
And yes, don't use a task killer with Android. I used to use one a while back, and it made absolutely no difference in battery life or performance. In fact, it made some apps a lot slower to restart. That was with my old Cliq. Ever since I've had my G2 I haven't used one.

[Q] Help, stop apps from running...

Ok first off I do not need the whole lecture on Linux and how Android is supposed to work. I have had this phone for almost a year and you can say that all you want, but my results are different. I want a way or program to keep programs from automatically booting and running in the background. I have been using Go Launcher Ex and have Launcher Pro and SPB running in the background when they were never opened. No, I do not want to uninstall them as I have paid for them and like to keep them updating and check on them once in awhile to see the improvements. And that was just an example. There are also plenty of other apps running in the background I just do not need running all the time and automatically, and I will close them and they reload. So no lectures on how your phone is made to run like this, because I notice from my own personal use that when you close more programs the phone runs way smoother with less lag, no matter how it is "supposed" to work. So is there a program or something I can do or use to stop these programs from running automatically until I choose to run them? Please help.

I don't want to remove them, just keep them from running when they aren't being used. I mean really, if you only use some of them say once a week, do they really need to be taking up RAM making your phone lag everyday. What happened to having control over what is running, it is YOUR phone right?

Can't you just freeze what you want and then unfreeze when you want to us them?

Hey, would that work??? I remember reading that you could freeze apps. What program was that? Interesting... but really, I found a bunch of threads on angry users because we don't have control over what starts. Why can't the program just be there, until you decide to start it?

I use My Backup Pro but I read that Titanium works too. As to why...there is a long list of questions that could follow that intro...we are stuck accepting it.

Yeah, I've heard they want to track us and all that crap. I found a program called "Autostarts" that claims it does what I am looking for. Paid the .94 cents and am about to check it out. Thanks for the idea though. Freezing and unfreezing something just to use it sounds like a pain, just don't want them running for no reason.

Both MyBackUp Pro and Titanium Pro will freeze apps (tried both and like Titanium best because you can see what is frozen in the list and MyBackup does not have this). Either way you must keep USB Debugging checked for them to work properly, but that's no problem. Every once and a while you may notice something not working properly and you have to unfreeze ("Defrost") some apps to stop the force closing if this happens...for instance one of them was preventing me from changing my ringtones (I suspect I froze one of the media apps or music player, etc). Also you can use Titanium to remove apps or bloatware but since it keeps a list of all apps removed (assuming you did a Titanium backup) you can reinstall it thru Titanium.

I have Titanium and LOVE it as a backup. I love the option to individually install and uninstall things. It gives you more choice/power over your device. But I'd hate to have to freeze things just to keep them from running when they shouldn't be. It's amazing with all these programmers and smart people out there, that there isn't one easy solution to this problem.

You could also go against your own rant and learn how to close apps correctly and stop blaming the system. I never have apps re-open, so I don't understand this phenomenon. If you're unwilling to solve your own problem, so am I.

Let me ask....why does maps or amazon remain open all the time, when I never open them in the first place. But yet there they are...even after a reboot. What you call a "phenomenon" I see as just another day in the life of the Epic. So what do you have running that doesn't allow these apps to open. It certainly has nothing to do with the closing procedure, seeing as I never opened them in the first place

Dunno, I back or exit out and nothing but basic google services runs in the background with swype, launcherpro, and something else. That's it. I freeze nothing, I app kill nothing.

It sounds like he's talking about the apps that just start up on their own, not the ones he has opened. The solution is to freeze them or delete them or install a custom ROM that left them out.

Well that was very nice and helpful of you. Either you are very well educated and know something almost no one else seems to know, or you're a complete idiot. I have found numerous threads on this subject and have not found one answer. This is no lazy ass, I cannot Google, and I am not putting out any effort to help myself question. I have done a lot of searching. Task Managers don't work, cause the apps just restart themselves. So if you are a computer God, then why not actually be helpful instead of being a jerk and wasting time posting in this thread. It IS a question and answer thread, I do not believe I am out of line here.

Not trying to be a jerk. You started out by saying you wanted different results without changing your behavior. That may not be possible. I don't know what apps you have running. Deleting an extra launcher won't stop you from downloading it later when you want to use it. Are you using the back button or built in exit button from within the app? What apps are reopening? Exiting an app using the home key will not close it. I need more info to help and less ranting.

No, I understand the back button exits the app while the home key only "pauses/minimizes" it. And, as others have said, certain apps such as maps start up on their own. I have beautiful widgets, maps, SPB, Launcher Pro, Perfect Task Switcher, etc. etc., all running in the background at boot. It's not about me starting them, they start themselves. And even when you close them, they just restart. Why do we not have the control? There has to be a way. I do have certain apps I would prefer to run in the background, as they are used more frequently, but not just whatever apps feel like running should run on their own. Why should I have to uninstall them. Say maps for instance. It is handy to have, but really how often will I need it. So I want it there for convenience just in case. So why should it be constantly running in the background. It only needs to run every month or two or whatever it may be when I choose to use it. It's not a hard concept, but this seems to be the flaw of Android from what I have read in many forums.

Running in the background is a subjective phrase. Some run a tiny piece so they'll launch quicker or the app data may just be up behind the scene. It doesn't always mean the app is fully running. Words with friends won't close at all. I don't keeo apps that behave like that. One reason some apps stay open has to do with the memory manager. Froyo and gb are more advanced in that department.

[Q] Note 8 VERY slow... now

I've had my 8 for several months but now it's starting to slow down. I have done everything except a factory reset (because thats just a pain in the ass) but it is still slow. Short of the reset does anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

I assume your battery drain is normal, or has not changed since the slowness has happened.
You have not stated if you rooted or custom ROM has been installed.
I found a few apps will do this time to time... depending on when they update. I always monitor my apps so troubling apps are always reverted back to their previous version.
You can use security 360 to monitor your tablet... It is a very good antivirus with some nice built in features. One is memory speed up and usage.
Basically it lets you know what apps are running in background, and releases them to speed up the tablet. I like it because it is like having 3 or 4 apps all into one and does not hog memory.
You can search the Q&A for battery drain if you have issues with battery as well ... there are many threads, so at least one will help. The lengthy threads have some good info near the end... as I try to help using simple methods that work with stock ROMs.

If not rooted, do so and you can eliminate apps that you don't use and that suck up RAM. You can as well move programs to an SD Card to increase the memory available.
Additionally, rooted or not you can go in and clean out the cache of all your apps. They build up over time.

Went to Best Buy and talked to the Samsung rep and he had the answer! First, get rid of SPB launcher then use Clean Sweep (in the store) to get rid of bloatware. Fast as Hell now! App only works on non-rooted I think. But it DOES work! Thanks for the help!

SPB launcher??? It must have been rooted. I have a mostly stock ROM... never had speed issues, but it is all in the choice of apps I install.
Given that many apps are developer driven, and from my experience with developers here on the forum, makes me cautious about installing apps. I install only what I need and does the job cleanly. Sometimes the best apps are buggy when being updated to run 4.4.x, as I seen that a lot since Xmas. Though May has been a good start for the year... many apps have been sorted out, but still iffy as there are thousands of apps to choose from.
I places a thread, and an answer to battery, and apps disabling in a simple and minimalistic method. If anyone is interested, they can search for posts by me... they are within this year.

You should not have needed to uninstall SPB unless you already had a whole bunch of apps. I have 200+ Apps with no issues.
Also Clean Sweep is a nice app, but you can do this already without the added app. Open you Google search, look at the bottom left hand tab, open it and you can do the same thing.

Nope. Not rooted and the launcher worked fine but apparently it slowed the system down. Now it's smokin'.

Guys, please. The point of my thread is NOT whether the root claim is a lie or not. I am asking some questions about what can be done with it regardless, so please, if anyone knows inform me, but don't post guessing games of whether it is real or not.

So the Note 4 is actually my first device I've owned where I didn't have an unlocked bootloader. Because of this, I'm not sure whether all the modifications I've made to my past devices were enabled because I had an unlocked bootloader.
The only thing I know we can't do is install custom roms.
So... that leaves me with a question. What kinds of things can we do with just root?
On top of that, I have some specific questions (Might think of more later) :
Will root let us be able to install the auto-brightness control that the international version of the Note 4 has? If you don't know, you're able to adjust how low or high the auto brightness stages will go without turning off auto brightness on that version. It's so much nicer than having to turn off auto, adjust to where you want, and then remember to turn auto back on when you leave that environment.
Can we remap the capacitive multitask button to be a menu button instead? And to remap long-pressing that button to be the new multitask?

I'm assuming that they will. I suppose I should have worded my post different.
So it should have said, if we get safe strap we will be able to have custom roms.
It's not quiet the same as a unlocked bootloader though.

Well regardless of whether we have custom roms through some other means, I'd personally most interested in those 2 questions I stated. That's honestly the things I want most with root at the moment.

My main and only real reason for wanting root is for Ad Block ESPECIALLY in youtube. I hate those commercials... You can install Ad Block without root (as I just did) but it just doesn't seem to work as well as it did with my last rooted device... Although I'm not sure if this is the app devs getting more creative with how they get ads through or possibly even a Lollipop things...
The other main reason was so Rocket Player could delete podcasts I had already listened too.. That was resolved with the Lollipop update so I am good to go there...
Some really like Root for Titanium backup to back up ALL app data and settings... This was handy for me back when I was flashing ROMS all the time but without that capability I don't see myself having much of a need for that since the games I play store the data in the Android folder which I don't need root to copy/backup
Another great thing that has come about the last year or so is Xposed modules.. These give you just about ANY customization you could possibly want but of course in order to use them you will also need root..... There is a great app that pulls the commercials from Youtube which I will be checking out if Root is actually here... As I said before I hate hate the ads... Not that I don't buy FULL versions of some of the apps if I find them useful because I do... But with things like Chrome and Youtube I really miss the option of them being disabled... Yes I know Firefox has this built in but I like y Chrome for the ability to send pages from my PC to my phone with the click of a button....
I find that the Note 4 with the help of Apex PRO has helped me gain many of the features I once wanted Root and the ability to flash things for... So now I am just looking for the ability to kill some ads....

I'm with you on the adblock and it's one of the things I've been looking forward too also. The ads mobile gets is ridiculous, I'm fine with them on most websites on the computer but the mobile versions really kill some things.
Xposed is an interesting topic to me, I've never had any experience with it since I've never really needed it. It will be fun to see what they do. Thanks for the info.

The tool is not out. He's asking what can be done with root.
I want to delete all bloatware, install multi window for all apps, adblock, mxtube downloader, and xposed for 4.4.4

Good point I forgot about being able to add multi window for non supported apps... It would be really nice for Tapatalk to support it

you can remove pre-loaded carrier apps that cause sluggish instability. improve battery life, and speed up application start times.

Mw-pen app enabler, ive been using since i got this phone. Let's you add apps to multi window. Should work for non system apps. It's worked for me. been my solution until we get root, if we do.

Just an fyi: You can disable bloatware without having root by using @gatesjunior's Debloater utility. Here's the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2998294

How do I get good battery life

Hi guys,
So around 1 month ago now, I got myself hands on a Note10+ (N975F)
I have been noticing screen off time drain, it is around 1.8% for me. I have tried using greenify, optimizing the settings, battery saving mode etc.
It hasn't really been working for me. Screen off time is really important for me, even more than screen on time.
So i wanted to know, how could I maximize the battery life of my Note10+? Is there like a custom rom you could recommend, like Lineage or dr ketan?
Knox is already tripped bcz of the previous owner, so that is no problem. Or a other custom rom or just with rooting something.
If you know anything, I would appreciate it if you could tell me,

First, you can select apps that you dont require to be always running, to be dormant, look for this option in settings, also you can install galaxy labs, there is a similar option there also, I disabled several apps via CCSWE, that have the undesirable behavior of being always running and accesing internet, such as facebook, chrome, youtube, operator apps, etc, also, with CCSWE you can deprive apps of certain undesired services that eat batt, this a process that takes some time, as you use the device, you can obseve and decide what to disable, to uninstall, or control via ccswe, I have my note 10+ since Sept 6 2019 and the battery lasts thru the whole day, I get some 7 hrs SOT on normal std use, when I play intensive games,, that is another diferent thing

Hey thank you for taking the time to help me. I have tried what you said, I went into settings and I went through my apps and selected those that don't need to run in the background. I also downloaded CCSWE from the playstore, i saw like 500 applications, but only disable or clear data from the application.
Are there any other device settings you recommend changing?

Otherwise get PD MDM to block apks from running at boot and disable them.
Use Samsung Device Manager and set to Optimized in main window. Toggle on fast charging but don't enable any other off the top 3 dot menu. You can then disable that app too. 3rd party power management apps including Samsung's can screw it up. Cloud apps, Goggle Backup Transport/Backup Framework are big offenders on my stock 10+
Disable Google, Samsung and any carrier feedback.
To hell with Bixby except Bixby Vision/Vision Framework which are needed by the cam for full functionality.
Play with it.

Hey thanks for your reply. I would want to root it, I am not sure how. I have owned a oneplus 7 pro where it was much easier to do.
If I would root, what other options and tools could I use?
Also, I did those settings things from the battery, thank you.
Not sure what you mean with Google / Samsung feedback.
For bixby I disabled almost everything except vision and routines.

Hey thanks for your reply. I would want to root it, I am not sure how. I have owned a oneplus 7 pro where it was much easier to do.
If I would root, what other options and tools could I use?
Also, I did those settings things from the battery, thank you.
Not sure what you mean with Google / Samsung feedback.
For bixby I disabled almost everything except vision and routines.

Don't disable Bixby Framework either.
The feedback options are buried in settings, you'll run into them.
I'm not rooted so I don't spend much time looking at what I could do. You do have real time cpu/power usage capabilities with it for weeding out the hogs... for one thing.

Hmmm, can't really find those feedback options. I will enable the framework again.
I guess I will root when it is really needed to. First let's see what I can do without.

In the Goggle and Samsung account settings.
If it's a carrier phone one of the advanced network settings. Carrier phone; disable remote support, updates (unless you want an update), and all their software.
Keep Samsung account and apps related to Galaxy Store/Themes as you want to be able to download themes, icon packs and apps from there.
Excellent free icon packs... and the Good Lock family of apps.

Yea it is not a carrier phone. I get around 1.4% drain per hour now.

Should be about 1% when sleeping with AOD on.
Keep the AOD to a bare minimum though ie just a clock no images.

Galaxy labs, Battery Tracker is useful.
See if Google Backup Transport or Framework are the culprits. If already package blocked clear their data and the data on Goggle Play Services ie gms.
It can be hard to ferret out as many apks simply are thrown together under Android Services.
Worse some Google apps falsely show under Transport etc even when its blocked. That why you clear the data of gms.
Use the factory load of Samsung Device Manager to globally clean caches. Reboots seldom help.
Turn off location, bt and wifi if not using.
Do not let Playstore run or Samsung updates unless your using them.
When running clean its ide current with screen on is typically in the 100-200 ma range. A few lower and higher. If you're getting a lot of spikes 400 ma and above at idle something is using a lot of the cpu resources...

So I installed Galaxy Labs and Battery Tracker.
I noticed that Google Foto's was on top with 7.1%.
Followed was whatsapp with 6.3%
And google play service was 3.78%
I haven't seen Google Backup Transport in the list.
Would there be like a way to turn off location automaticly when I am not using it, for example that it would only turn on for google maps or something?

If you leave locations on it's a whore to a lot of apps including Google. Looks like you found your prime suspects.
Lol, WhatsApp never runs here same with FB.

Alright i'll see how that goes. Also, I got myself the original wireless charger from samsung today.
Would it be okay if I just putted it down on it whenever I am at my desk? I mean battery wize.
