Hi all..
I have been using LinageOS for quite a while now, I love it and applaud those that have worked so hard to make such a wonderful OS.
But the main reason for using it is so I can avoid google. I have just installed Linage-18.1-20211113-nightly-beryllium-signed (I did not use the GAPPS package) and when I checked the installed apps/system, there is 2 google assistant apps.
I also rooted my mobile before installing Linage using magisk-v23-0 and disable-force-encryption=-treble, this was done through TWRP 3.3.0.0 beryllium. I mention these in case there is a possibility of these google apps coming from there, but have searched on the net and can find no evidence of this..
Anyone know anything about this? If Linage is now including google apps I am going to have to find another OS, and I really do not want to..!
Cant seem to get these google assistant apps off my phone (POCO f1). Tried every wipe I could do in TWRP, tried a port of CalyxOS, nothing will shift them.. Even when I 'force halt' they just switch themselves on again in a few minutes..
Going to try going back through the LinageOS versions and see if there is one that doesnt have them.
Nobody have an idea of how to get rid of these?
It's definitely weird, very weird (and hard to believe, if I may say so).
Using LOS ever since and never ever had such thing happening. Sometimes even putting gapps on it to try something with GSF...
Did you do a proper re-install from the scratch, just like by the book?
https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/beryllium/install
Other than that, perhaps try asking in

Hi SigmundDroid (cool handle)
Have now tried E Foundation too, every wipe I could do in TRWP, nothing will shift them, they activate a few minutes after I 'force stop' them..
Am now trying to find a way of doing a full format of the partitions as these files are like viruses..
E Foundation forum folk are also a bit startled by this, think they would like to know how to remove the files as part of the install procedure, me too..!!
Just found this;
https://pastebin.com/bf9Hh4RH
3rd and 4th line down.
When I look at the google assistant apps, the first one shows at the bottom of the screen under ‘advanced’;
Version 11
com.android.hotwordenrollment.okgoogle
The second one shows;
Version 11
com.android.hotwordenrollment.xgoogle
Not 100% sure how to use those lines, but they look to be adb commands… Any idea anyone?
Similar thread from 2017: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/google-assistant-on-lineage-os.3566187/
Of possible relevance is that it's what does the transfer of accounts and settings from your old phone in newer Android versions. I don't plan on using Google Assistant generally, but it was very handy that the Lineage setup hooked into it for transferring accounts and stuff from my "old" phone.
Ah, the plot thickens..
I do get that some folk are ok with google, but not me.. Would still very much like to get rid of them. Also, those that are making google-free roms would no doubt want them gone too, can hardly be google-free with those hiding deep in the moby..
Did you clear the system partition? Some ROM install packages run an addon.d script to retain Gapps and other stuff. Of course LineageOS does not contain any Google stuff, only AOSP. So there is just another logical explanation for this. If you want to be sure, look in the LineageOS image yourself.
Apologies.. Looks like I had not made it clear, I do not now think Linage, or Calyx or E-foundation have google assistant in them.. They seem to be remnants on the phone, probably from the original rom.
But they will not easily be removed and so remain regardless of which custom rom subsequently ends up on the phone.
Am hoping someone way smarter than me can work out how to get rid of them, also hoping it will help others achieve the same..

One other thing: it can also be the product partition. Gapps are normally included in the product image in the original firmware. Did you wipe that one as well?
Its still in LOS 19.1 , despite years of complaints. Starting to look like they keep it in there on purpose, no option to uninstall, disable is greyed out..... SKETCH!
Same for Lineage 20 on my OnePlus 7T Pro. "google free" system ...
Is there an explanation somewhere why the apps are permanently and indelibly integrated? Why is there almost nothing about this on the net?
The .apks are 100% in the lineage images. You can verifiy this by yourself, if you want.
They are located in the product.img under priv-app.

Dear internet community,
i would like to adress my problems concerning the installation of Xposed and GravityBox on my Fairphone. You must know that this is my very first smartphone and i dont really know how to use them yet. But i know that i would like to be able to change my Locksreen wallpaper, whích is the only intention for me to try to install Xposed in the first place.
So lets get to the nuts and bolts:
Firstly i tried to "unroot" my phone (of which i dont have any clue what that might mean), but the program i used (universal unroot) gave me this message upon trying: "please allow root access now. If you cant allow root access your device is most likely not rooted". At this point i dont know if i am able to allow root acess to that program, which ist rediculous in itself since this program should allow me to do that in the first place. I checked in the settings but couldnt find anything that looked like root access.
The next step was to install Xposed (version 2.6.1 and then 2.7 both with the same result). After the installation and the reboot, Xposed states unter the "Framework" category that: "the latest version of Xposed is currently not active (my app manager tells me it is). Did you install the framework and reboot?". Again i did the reboot and i installed it. If try to go further into the Framework menu and press the "install/update"-button it tells me: "failed to get root access. make sure your device is rooted properly and you have not blocked shell commands".
My question now is: do you have a solution for my problem? I would be very thankfull and appreciative if you would offer me a solution, since my intentional desire of changing the Lockscreen Wallpaper is such a small thing that it is quite hillaours as to how much effort has to be put in to change this small detail. Please dear community, help me out!
With kind regards
Alex

First of all: I see no point in "unrooting" my device. Since you said, you don't have any clue what that might mean, maybe this helps.
The term "root" is comparable to the "admin rights" on your computer. Some people do not need those rights. But If you don't need it just don't use it. If you "unroot" your device, what you do is, you throw away those admin rights. I don't see why you want to do this. The only reason which comes to my mind, is if you want your manufacture to repair your phone using your warranty. They basically don't like it if your phone is rooted, and say it violates the warranty conditions. But then again: fairphone comes pre-rooted, so having root does not void the warranty of your fairphone.
Usually if a program wants to have those root(/admin) rights, a screen pops up where you have to confirm that the app might use those rights.
If you want to know for what root rights can be good for, just google "rooting android" or something like that to read up on that topic.

Seems like you are actually unrooted. To use xposed and all its cool modules you need to have root rights. Unrooting your phone to use xposed is just contra productive. Maybe install SuperSU to re-gain root rights. But maybe you need to re-flash your OS.

Wait, what? Did I understand correctly, that you unrooted your phone to use an app that requires root so that you can change your lockscreen background?
Dude, you can do this in the settings without any root/unroot/xposed stuff.
As you said it is just a small detail, and such a standard feature, so it would be CRAZY if you need to go through such a hassle.
Just go into settings and somewhere in the display or lockscreen settings you can choose a background (you might need to disable the mood background for this). I do not have my fairphone anymore, so I cannot tell you where exactly that option is. Maybe someone else can point to the the exact location of that setting.

I can't find any option for a different lockscreen image on my FP - only normal background image (wich is then also used for lockscreen, if I have mood background disabled). So I would also suggest GravityBox, which seems to be a too complex topic for your first smartphone ever...

I know that this option is there. I had a custom lockscreen background (without using some xposed module like gravitybox). I will check with a friend who has a Fairphone, and tell you where the setting is.
I am sorry. Apparently I was mistaken. Changing the lockscreen background to a different wallpaper than the homescreen background seems not to be possible. You can just choose between mood background or not. I thought I had two different backgrounds while I had my Fairphone, but seems like I was wrong. sorry
Why is this not implemented? What I know for sure is that is a feature in CM and and Samsungs stock android version. I do not know about AOSP android.
Thanks for your feedback, Hyst!
I second your question about the missing implementation, but that's quite in a row with some other phone's stock features I am missing on the FP - e.g. a more solid gps, special character search in contacts and some other things other phones can do. Then I remember, Fairphone is still quite new on the market and neither has the experience nor the financial background to act like e.g. Samsung would do. And taken that into account, I'm sure they will grow with the requirements...

Now in a later post of yours you said that it is not possible. But i qould like to go into why i unrooted my phone. I was watching a Video from this site and misunderstood what has been said. I unrooted my phone, thinking that this would be necessary to make Xposed work. By that time i didnt really know how all of this works. I know its a rookie mistake and a "stupid" one, but i learned something and i am okay with it.
The next task now is to reflash my phone. Maybe you guys have an idea as to why it wont work: I followed the instructions on the Fairphone website and it still aborts during installation.
Edit: I am not allowed to linkt external websites, so i cant give you the video and fairphone installation guide links.
Greetings
Alex
Hope I didn't get it completely wrong but just wanna throw in another idea: why don't you reset your phone to factory settings? Reflashing it sounds like a lot of work for a beginner like you.. (Didn't do it either)
Since the phone is/was rooted from release on, resetting it should do the charme, imo. If you don't have a lot of files to lose I'd try that.
PS: really funny how complicated it got for you since your main intention was to change the lockscreen wallpaper )
PPS: follow this http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Fairphone_Fairphone/Guides#How_to_partition_your_Fairphone from the 4th point on

PS: That, unfortunately, didnt do the trick
Edit2:
Since the Fairphone support hasn't replied yet, i tried another solution, but i need to ask you guys for help. I was following the instructions in the Fairphone wiki under the "How to restore Fairphone if you totally bricked it" topic. All the necessary files and programes are downloaded. Now when i choose the scatter file of the fairphone binarys the program gives me this message: "Error initialising scatter file failed. Please check the name of scatter file which you load is legal". if i press the download button the program gives me this message: "Download list is empty, please select a scatter file before executing"
I really dont get this. The fairphone binarys are supposed to work with this program, yet they are not. Can anyone help? Is there something really pbvious i have overlooked?

I don't think you need to go through that mouch trouble as you're still able to use your phone (if I understood that correctly).
How about re-installing the Fairphone software from recovery? There's a nice guide on how to do that at:
fairphone.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/202478028-Manually-install-Fairphone-OS-software-update-version-Cherry-1-6
Afterwards the superuser binaries should be back and you will have root access again.

Which Fairphone model do you have? If it's the old one (from last year's batch), did you already use the repartitioning tool to "unify" your internal storage? Which update did you try to apply (exact filename)?

Its the second Batch phone, so the FP1U. I tried it with almost any OS given on the homepage. Those are the ones i tried:
OTA_AOSP-4.2.2_2014-08-05.zip
Fairphone_FP1_OS_v1_6_OTA_2014-07-31.zip
Fairphone_Cherry_1.6_FUSE_Image_2014-07-31.zip
Fairphone_FP1_OS_1G13G_v1_6_OTA_2014-07-31.zip
The Fairphone updater tells me that my phone is running the "Chenpi" version 1.5 which i cannot find on the hompage (thats strange isnt't it?)
What else could be done here?

Applying that one from recovery clearly should have worked. I've even used it myself with my (already repartitioned) first batch phone.
If you want to be sure the .zip file you downloaded is not corrupted, compute its MD5 checksum. If you're under Windows, use a tool like heise.de/download/md5summer.html
Under Linux, just use md5sum <filename>
The checksum should match the one found on Fairphone's software update page: 664ca09368a4c922a12dc2526afe092b

1.5 is the version your phone was shipped with, I think. As they issued the update to 1.6 just a few days after the new phones started shipping, I guess they thought putting only the new image up on their website was enough.

The awesome support Team worked something out and my phone is finally rerooted! Now, i have installed Xposed, rebooted it, installed Gravitybox, rebooted it and both programs are working fine. After some fiddling around it finally has worked!! For most of you it might seem to be a small thing and really not that important, but for me it is. Honestly the only two things i really use to personalize the phone is the Wallpaper / Lockscreen and the WakeupCall ringtone.
Thank you so much for all of your support and patience!

I have a completely stock phone & I was using nova launcher from day one but I turned back to the default launcher today and noticed a strange data in the 'shelf'. It was showing that I have low %age of storage left. At first I thought it must be a bug but then after some time I checked the storage in settings and thereafter confirmed this using the app "DiskUsage".
Could anyone help me out here? Kindly have a look at the screenshot I'm attaching.
In short, System data is using 27.3 GB of storage!!!
I suspect it may be due to the flash that I did some time back when I returned to complete stock from a rooted OnePlus 3. Though I followed the official website instructions.
Thanks guys for reading this message & I know someone out there will know about this as I'm not that lucky to encounter a completely unique bug :good:

hmm, I'll wait till the O update for a clean install as setting up few particular apps (mostly banking & two-factor authentication) is really a boring/huge task for me, plus few apps have just NO backup solution like the now-defunct but awesome keyboard Fleksy, Adguard user filters. I really think Android needs a good global backup function to sync basic things like android settings, SMS, Call logs.
Meanwhile, if anyone know a solution which doesn't include formatting the phone, please do tell me !

Hello
I installed lineage 14.1 on a Galaxy S5. But I think already I have to go back to the backup I made with twrp.
I have no clue how you guys use all this stuff. I mean, it''s a serious PITA.
What I would like to know, before I continue: Is there a way to transfer my contacts from the stock rom to the lineage?
I used Titanium backup (Free) for a backup of apps and data. I wanted restore one app. But it's still not finish, after 10 Minutes. Most likely, it does absolutely nothing. So, if I want .... let's say restore 30 apps, it takes months?
Why do you guys use other OS? Is it to play around? Or do you use it in daily life? If I have to install everything from scratch and do the settings for each app, then.... no thanks.
So, what I'm missing? Is this all just for fun? I see, it's easy to root, install twrp and all the stuff. But what then? Install a game and that's it? Do I expect way too much?
Another point, why doesn't lineage not allow to show contacts only with numbers? Now I have thousands of contacts from google. Is that supposed to be cool? So, what's the point of all that. Thanks god I made a backup. Jeez.
Now titanium backup is blocked. Operartion is already in progress. How do I kill an app?
Most probably I can't use titanium backups from another os to another. Right? With that, that's all 100% useless.
Horrible.
EDIT: Please : Forget all the above questions: How do I get into the twrp recovery mode? Vol Up, power and home brings the recovery mode from lineage i guess. Vol down the download mode. I need to restore my twrp backup.

I personally use lineageOS because it even works without Google play spyware. If you have no problems with privacy violation, you should backup all your stuff to Google cloud. Install lineageOS and GApps and let the play store do the restoring.

I agree with you...
I believe that @XtraWater should think about using Google for simple Items like Contacts and such that will sync up even after restoring a device.
Though, TB is very useful for a handful of tasks, I'm not big on using it for ALL apps and app data because this may (potentially) be like a false sense of hope.
I can understand that certain apps and/or app data being backed up using TB but, only selectively.
There's a very decent selection of apps that could restore 1 or more apps at once by way of the Android Installer. In another word... It can install a handful of apps one at a time without having to manually select each app that takes much longer.
Then, if you had used TB, that backed up app data for a specific app, you can then restore the app data after the app was reinstalled.
LineageOS/CyanogenMod is a great option for installing an Android OS without the "GApps" requirement.
Here's a Fun Fact about this...
This has been a "legal" requirement since the early days of CyanogenMod (i believe it was earlier to when they were just named CyanogenOS).
In short, they were Legally presented with a "Cease and Desist" Order from the (Plaintiff) "Google" to stop providing Google Play and those additional apps/features associated with Google Play.
This is where the GApps packages were born that's another story all together...
Anyway... Good Luck to you both and I hope you enjoyed the Fun Fact!

I don't know guys. I spent hours today to install and configure lineage. Maybe the was the worst idea of the week.
Youtube keeps crashing. Annoying notifications like app ghhggy is running. Very stupid information. Notifications volume gets back to max after a while.
That's all no fun. Just a PITA.
God bless the Samsung stock rom.

Lineage is a piece of ****. It starts to reboot itself and all notifications are gone.
I wasted hours for that crap. The internet is full of users with that issue. Wtf. They should warn the users before the download.
That's insane guys.
Lineage gets in general good ratings. That means, other custom roms are even worse? Jeez. What a damn crap.
I Love LineageOS!

You did not say your exact S5 model in the OP but looking at your posts history you have a S5 SM-G900F code name klte, right?
Looking at the LineageOS stats page one can see 1.8 million active installs & 38,000 active klte devices @ the present so something must be right.
Active installs are devices pinging almost every day to the LineageOS servers.
I have been using 100% stock Official Lineage 14.1 on the S3 i9300 (my daily driver) for 7 months updated almost every week since then (currently 2018-July-05) using the built-in Lineage Updater + Open Gapps ARM Pico (2018-06-30) + Lineage ARM super user add-on and had exactly zero system crash or unwanted reboot.
As I find the LineageOS how to install wiki convoluted with adb & Heimdall especially for Windows user I did a super clean install as described here: S3 i9300 LineageOS Super Clean Install & Samsung Firmware. Maybe you could find a similar post for your device?
And I do not use any system mods like Xposed or moved any apps to the external Micro sd card like you mentioned in other threads.
The proper XDA thread if still interested on trying Lineage on your S5 klte would be [ROM] [OFFICIAL] LineageOS 14.X for Galaxy S5 | Android 7.X Nougat
OTOH reading what you posted here:

Maybe you should sell your S5 & buy an iPhone instead?

I'm quite impatient person...sometimes.... My stock rom started to freeze and lagging to a point, where it's hard to use the smartphone anymore. But yes, I didn't a factory reset in many Years..it just wasn't necessary. Two or three nights ago I woke up and grabbed my phone. The device was super hot. Never experienced that before. The battery was fine, only warm. So I had to decide to reinstall the stock rom or try a custom rom. Or by a new phone. But that doesn't makes sense to me...because the power of the S5 is enough for me. And I would have to do all the settings and installations anyway. I thought, well..give Lineage a chance. It was nice...apart from the random reboots. Now, I installed the official 6.01 from Samsung. I was quite fast done with all the settings whatever. Somehow the phone runs now even better than it was new...
I'm kinda busy the last weeks and days. With that, it's a bad timing to do such experiments. When I have more time, I'll try it again. However, I'll keep my S5, Thai Version as long as possible. I like the dimension of the screen. And somehow...it's a rock solid device. Since i used it always in a Spigen case, the S5 looks still brand new.
I love LOS. I have installed it on Samsung and Motorola phones. Also on a Nexus 7 2013. Never had a problem with any of them. Even installed lineage with microg on some.
Same for me. Have LineageOS on my Samsung S4 active, on my muns Gakxy Tab and on my Samsung S7.
Setting up LineageOS is like setting up every other phone. Except the fact, that you don't have any crapapps installed and get an up-to-date OS with monthly or even weekly (security) updates.
I'm really sorry that you had such a bad beginning with LineageOS. I hope, that after you did all the work with flashing and stuff that you don't surrender.
Regarding to your issues, you may have done something wrong.
I have been experiencing MASSIVE slow down and lag in all of my Apps the past month. When I have facebook messenger open, or my camera, everything slows to a halt. It is making using the phone a nightmare.
I tried getting an SD card, doing a full factory reset, and a few other things, but it is still going extremely slow. I have read 100s of forum posts, and nothing I can find seems to be working.
I was able to install TWRP recovery, and would like to root my device so I can start uninstalling the moto apps, or further diving into figuring out why my phone is going slow.
I can not get the Magisk to install correctly, and have tried so many things now that I am at a loss...
I tried doing a "format" doing a "wipe" putting the zip file on my external SD card, but nothing is working.
If I just go and try it normal I get the "Can not mount storage" error that seems to be coming for the device being encrypted. If I do a format or wipe it does not give me any errors and seems to install correctly, but when I reboot (it goes through the encryption process, and "new phone setup" process) the Magisk manager isnt installed. If I download the APK manually it says it is not rooted. (I tried Magisk 17.3 and the latest 18.1 and 18.1 beta)
I have no clue what to do now. Any one have any suggestions?

People kept talking about it, but I couldnt find the files to patch in Magisk, and when I used the TWRP that was supposed to be decrypted it wouldnt flash.
Would you happen to be able to find the forum post describing what to do? I searched again and couldnt find any instructions. Sorry to ask... I have seriously just been googling this for 2 straight days and cant figure it out.
Can anyone provide an update? I cant stand how slow my phone is.

1. Flash TWRP.
2. Mount /Vendor in TWRP, then flash the universal encryption disabler which can be found in this thread.
3. Format /data in TWRP using the option that requires you to type in "yes".
4. Reboot from twrp right back into twrp, then flash Magisk.
5. If for some reason Magisk claims to not be installed after flashing it, then manually install the Magisk manager app. It should fix it right up.
6. Profit.
Twrp with /vendor mounting can be found here for 16gb variants, and here for 32gb.

I just did it and was able to debloat my phone.
The stupid part is it is still going SUPER slow!!!
Any idea how I can fix slowness? I think I just need to get a different phone. This is unusable.

If no 3rd party apps are installed and it's still slow, then you probably have a hardware problem. If you do have any 3rd party apps installed, I'd try removing them one by one to see if anything improves.

Well... there is no way to see if it is slow if there are no other apps to use. ;p
Do you know if there is an app that shows CPU usage per app?
But thanks again!

I think there was a misunderstanding here. What I'm saying is, after you debloated the phone, if you didn't install any apps and it's still acting slow, then you might have a hardware problem. I don't know of any apps to check CPU usage. Best I can think of is the battery settings. It'll at least tell you what's running the most. You could also check running apps in the dev settings to see what's using the most RAM. Between the two it should give you a good idea if a system app is doing something unusual.
It is possible that you're just used to a much faster phone though. My J7 Perx was way faster than the G6 Play, and it frustrated me for a few weeks. Still kind of irks me to be honest.
After updating Realme GT ME software to Android 12, AOD does not work even though it is turned on in settings. Maybe someone can help solve this problem.
Problem solved. I did a complete phone reset. Everything works beautifully on the new UI 3.0
Hi,
did you restored with Google Backup after the reset?
I read in the web and in this forum, that the problem is common, and some people experienced it also after a full wipe restoring from the Google Backup, so you need to reinstall manually all the APPS and data.
Then I found a post that talk about the problem after a system restore, from Android 12 to Android 12, made only to clean the system. AOD worked before the restore, after no AOD.
It seems that's a problem also for OPPO ROM (seen also here in XDA Forum), know from December 2021.
Because I have 2 GT ME in my family, and some of my friens with this problem, I wrote also to Realme Support, Bug Report and some Telegram Groups, in this moment there isn't a sure way to solve, only the Full Wipe without Google Backup restore...
The only alternative way it's an APK file, but I don't know the source of this file, and if it's "safe" to make a try

We have two GT Master Edition phones and both of us have the issue. I did a factory reset and it was fixed, however as you've already said ír was broken again after Google sync. I will check those links. I wonder how could an APK fix something like this.
Hello I just downloaded it and installed it. Then I think about security. So I removed. But after removing apk Aod started working nicely.

Well because this is for oppo phones originally I think, something about colourOS. Anyway, it didn't do anything else and I removed it afterwards. What really bothers me though is the fact that it can be fixed in a fraction of a second by a 3rd party apk made by nobody. Why is there no official fix for this? Know since November...

Yes, but if it's from Oppo, I think that the certificate should be different.
Anyway I'm curious about the source of the APK...
About what you wrote, if the problem could be resolver with a simple APK installation, it's ridicolous that Realme/Oppo it's facing the problem from several month, and they don't released any simple patch...
From VirusTotal scan, I think that it simply create a user, so could be a simple linux permission problem or similar, on a process, a file or an executable
Searching for a solution, I found this link about the problem of the AOD not working after the update to android 12

in my case it worked, it consists in installing an app from the play store (therefore theoretically safe), when I solved the problem, I uninstalled it.

Thank you!
Worked also for me, and the other GT ME in my family!
Then I uninstalled the app and reboot the phone, all works fine.
A little detail : in the settings of this app the AOD, in my case, was already set to ON with the toggle, I simply moved it to OFF and to ON again and BOOM! It started working, with also the edge lighting!
Thank you again

I solved it with the simple "Reset system information only" from the Reset phone menu. it's less painful than factory data reset
