Tethered device is crawling along at around 0.20Mbps - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions & Answers

Not sure if anyone is even reading posts on the Note 8 but here goes
I've had this phone for a few years. It was running stock Android 9. I have the base unlimited plan from Verizon on this phone which means no tethering. So I thought.... I'm in the market for a new phone so if I brick this one, no big deal. I read that once rooted, you could enable tethering with any unlimited plan so after some Googling, I found a site that walked me through installing a rooted copy of Nougat.
Once it was on there, I was able to enable tethering and I attached my kid's iPad and away she went..............at 0.20Mbps. I remember a LONG time ago that you could bypass this artificial speed limit on tethered devices by messing with the DUN/TTL stuff but I think Verizon caught onto that. Then I tried a NetShare and PdaNet and while they DID solve the speed problem, some apps on the iPad (Roblox for example) give me a network error (guess it doesn't like going through a proxy that those 2 apps set up?). I also read that using a VPN connection can solve this problem too but a friend of mine messed with VPN stuff on his phone and I just remember him complaining about connection problems with apps from time to time so I'm trying to avoid that scenario.
At this point, I'm thinking about just going back to Pie and using NetShare and telling my kid that only YouTube will work when tethering unless somebody can point me to some settings I can mess with, now that I have root access, to speed up a tethered device.
TLDR: With my fancy root access, can anything be done to speed up a tethered device THAT DOES NOT involve having to mess with buying a VPN account?
PS I can't help but feel Verizon is intentionally slowing down my network speed on this old Android phone. In the 2 years I've been using my Note 8, surfing the internet on 4GLTE has gotten noticeably slower as time goes on. My speed tests always come back around 5Mbps and my wife's iPhone 11 (or 12?) FLIES when she's surfing the internet.

Tethering with NFSFAN's ROM's and Bell's Unlimited Mobile Browser

Hi everyone,
What is the story on tethering the HTC Touch with NFSFAN's latest WM6.5 ROM? I heard there was a patch that prevented Bell from realizing it was tethered data usage? Can anyone confirm?

It works just fine, and has for me in every ROM version out there.
Just remember it is called "unlimited mobile browser"......not unlimited data. There is a difference. I use mine when internet is not available and I want to use my laptop instead of the phone to browse XDA, etc. I wouldn't tether and start downloading torrents or songs from limewire etc. That kind of "data" would probably raise a flag. Can you think of any browsing on your phone + gps use (say...google maps) + titanium / m2d weather etc that would use 200mb in an hour????? Probably not, so I use it for browsing, not downloading.
I believe there is a screenshot available on page 1 of NFSFAN's ROM thread.

I was under the impression that there was a “special” way that Bell could tell that you were tethering under the official ROM. I thought there was a “hack” that removed this so that Bell could not tell (except perhaps by shear volume) if you were tethered or not.
How “safe” is it to use it for casual (ie. web browsing, email) internet usage? Am I going to get dinged with a huge bill?
Or, is there no such “special way” that Bell could tell even if I was still using the official ROM?

They can't tell your tethered, it is safe for casual browsing.
I was just warning you about the "sheer volume". You think it would be common sense not to tether and then download movies but you know some people.
I use it once in a blue moon just for browsing, and never was charged any extra, but i use a WDM rom, as long as no one abuses it we should be fine.
Torrents away!
I have pushed over 14 gigs a month on telus using my vogue as a tether, faster than my rogers lite! Have been doing this since Rev A in Sept 08.
Yup, they won't find out if no one goes and uses more than 4 GB in a month (Sprint)

Like others said, it's safe!
I've used multiple NFSFAN ROMs over the past year + on my Bell Touch, and have never run into tether charges. One month I did about 8GB of data tethered to my Acer Aspire One while travelling out of province, and no overage at all.
Just woundering something:

Connect your phone to your (generally) laptop and wait for a pop up on the phone to ask whether you want to share it's internet connection to the PC.
That's all there is to it, at least with NFSFANs ROM.

Nice! Thanks!
everytime i connect using internet sharing it disconnects seconds later, any ideas or fixes on this
anyone know how to tether with bluetooth os osx 10.5?
i can pair the phone for things like the sailing clicker remote but bluetooth pan wont work and i think ftp stopped working aswell any ideas?
as for using data on there pamphlets they at least used to mention downloading and streaming things like videos, messaging
so i asked at a bell store about the data stuff i could use and i asked about torrenting and showed WMtorrent and they said as long as i followed the abuse policy anything is fine they even noted it on my account
so if torrenting a say 1gb file on the phone is fine and tethering looks as if the data originated on the phone
whats the difference if the torrent was tethered or from the phone its self
currently this month ive used 4.38gb of data and no issues ive done above 6 before though
I use wifirouter to tether with since my internet sharing doesnt seem to want to stay connected for no more than 5 minutes and i play world of warcraft everyday using my vogue for internet and i have used as much as 10 gigs of bandwith and never got charged thru sprint as long as you have the unlimited data on your service plan, which i have the unlimited everything plan with sprint, been doing this for about 3 years now and never once got charged.
I have been tethering the Vogue now for over a year. Streaming, DLing firmwares, upgraded client blackberries, downloaded tunes. Basically done what ever I want. BUT Not often. once or ywice a week.
LOL, as a point though. I do use it for internet radio (resco) for HOURS at a time on device (& up to 9GB/month). so if they ever had an issue, I'd just blame it on that.
Ironically my bill only shows about 10MB of usage!
Im also having trouble like DWC316 my connection shows it is good, but I still cant get any web pages to load Im on sprint and I did have some issues getting my data connection with nfsfans v14 but now it works great on the phone but not on the laptop when I tether...any Ideas?

Wireless Tether DRASTICALLY SLOW, help please

Hello,
I tried searching for this issue and could not find any help in the topics, though I see some others are having the same issue with out resolution.
My phone via 4g get's about 3-5mbps when I run speedtest on the evo...
I start wireless tether and the fastest speed I can get via my laptop is .7mbps.
I updated my wireless driver to allow maximum power and that has allowed the speed to stay constant and improved the situation a little. ( there was a post somewhere on here, so thank you for that one)
Any ideas/help on how I can get my wireless tether speed to match closer to the 4g speed the phone gets? I am using google's wireless tether pre3 version. I have tried all 3 versions ( from the stable one, pre2 and pre3) all having same issue.
Is a full 2-4mbps loss in speed normal via wireless tether?
I am using rooted stock 1.47 rom and have tried fresh ROM with same results.
Any tips or help is greatly appreciated.
Same here
Hey, thought I would add to the chorus...with a large caveat.
I average about 5-7 down and about 1 up pretty consistently in my home on the phone. But, when I just browse and surf the web via the Android Wifi Tether (2.07) on my phone, I only get around 500k-1meg via Speedtest.net. However, if I look at the stats on my Tether application while I view things like FB, I spike to well over 3 megs at times. AND when I get torrents, I am using my full bandwidth that my phone says I have available to me, with almost nothing lost (as far as I can tell) from the 4g service, through the Wifi, to my computer.
This might not mean too much, and in fact I might never have noticed anything, until I tried to watch HD videos on my Laptops browser connected to my Evo via the Wifi app. It simply will not give me much more than 700 k (you can track what the site (for example, TheDailyShow) sees as "available" to you), even though I know I have more than that available to me at that exact same second (because I tell the torrents that I had been downloading to slow down, and immediately speed back up again after I try to watch HD videos)
It's not the same issue, but I think they are related. Have you tried torrents to see what you actually have available to you? Try something common and legal, so as not to piss anyone off.
I know I have the capacity, and I know my phone can handle it, I just dunno why I can't get that bandwidth that I know I have access to via the Tether application on my Evo all the time that I am browsing.

[Q] rooted 3g drop on wireless tether.

Im running Skyraider 3.5 sence with s-off radio 2.15.0.07.28 build 3.26.605.1
Im running into a problem with wireless tether 2.0.5 pre 14 or any version will stop working after a few mins. i have looked for something on here but I have been unable to find a fix. So I'm wondering if there is one. If there is im sorry for the repost. i can't seem to figure it out.
If any knows the right way to fix this im all ears.
This was one of the biggest reasons for rooting my phone. It worked great before 2.2 came out. Once I went to 2.2 rooted it stoped completely. I rooted into 2.2 using a method from Mejdam on youtube. I even tried the stock method that was on here to go back to 2.2. Then rerooted with unrev. still nothing.
Thanks.

I seldom ever use my wifi tethering...but when I noticed the version number in your post, I decided to upgrade, and found 2.0.5 RC1. I decided to test this new version out because last time I used wifi tether, it worked fine. I think I was using pre-10 (it came with SkyRaider 3.3). Well, I am noticing the same problem. It starts out just fine, really fast & responsive, then after a minute or so it goes intermittent, the 3G icon comes and goes and it just becomes worthless. We are both using SkyRaider 3.5. My baseband radio is newer though.
Anyone else?
UPDATE: if you have a file: "\system\etc\sysctl.conf" then rename it, reboot your phone and try wifi tethering again. This fixed this problem for me.

Rename the "sysctl.conf" to what?
I've also been having this problem for a long time now and so far haven't found any fixes.
I looked for the file you are talking about and cannot find it using Root Explorer, either I don't have it or it's hiding really well.
Also does anyone know where I can get the stock 3G Hotspot app?
VZ has blocked you on certain tethering traffic due to 3g abuse without the tethering contact ($20/mo).
I have experienced VZ blocking various 3g tethering activity on my previous phones. This block is based on the phone's EIS#.
When I changed phones, the block was gone until I spent a couple solid days on my corporate vpn.
I've recently been blocked from my corporate vpn again. I don't know what steps I'll take to get it re-enabled, but I suspect I'll enable their tether contract, to open my access, but shortly cancel (pro rate cost).
I don't know when i'll take time to do this..
Let me know if you have success with this.

I had a gut feeling that VW had something to do with it once 2.2 came out and they offered the 3g hotspot for $25. Ill keep looking to see if anyone is able to get around it. I'm not gunna hold my breath though.
It's not a 2.2 thing our a smart phone thing. This has existed since my first experience in 2004, on a basic cell phone tethering with 1X.
It's easier for VZ to block us rather than hold us to the End User Agreement.
I should be able to call VZ soon to enable their tethering, see if it opens my access, then cancel the tethering service for a prorate charge of 1 day.. By the weekend.

From what I recall reading in the past, Verizon cannot tell if you are tethering when using the 3rd party wifi tethering application. Are your comments based on your own experience, or can you supply a link that suggests Verizon is blocking our tethering applications.
EDIT: Just FYI, I found another thread, specifically on this subject:

I just renamed mine to "sysctl.conf.bak"
The file above was added by myself back when first posted that it would "increase your 3G speeds." And it actually did for me. But I suspected it when I tested the latest version of the wifi tethering application. When I renamed the file, things got instantly better as far as tethering goes... I have been using my wireless tether application for a little over an hour now with absolutely no problems.
So this was a guess on my part, but my tethering is now working fine and not dropping my connection. I hope this works for you as it has for me. If you don't have the file on your phone, then it's time to look elsewhere.
(don't forget to reboot after renaming the file)

My comments point-out that VZ can safely assume you're abusing tethering by the amount of data used within a certain timeframe. -- an amount that is not typically possible when only using phone and apps (non-tethering traffic).
Thinking back on the first time I encountered this in 2004, I did call VZ tech support. This was their answer.-

[Q] Slow LTE Tether - Wired & Wireless

I've run Wifi Tether, EasyTether Pro, and ClockworkMod Tether. All give me tethered speeds <= 1Mbps up and down.
This is a Galaxy Nexus LTE with unlocked bootloader and Root. Stock otherwise and no radio update.
Running on OSX 7.2.
I can run the speed test from the same location and get 25Mbps+ while running the test from my phone.
I can do this while running any of the tethering apps as well and I'll still get blazing speeds on my phone, but terrible on my computer.
It's definitely not a USB problem as the computer is USB 2.0 and there are no other devices plugged in.
It's also not a general computer issue as I've tested on other machines, both Mac and Windows.
Anyone have any ideas on how to hunt down the problem?
Looking for any suggestions at all...
I've only run Speed test once while tethering, but my speed was 1Mbps just like you. I should mention that I have a stock SGN and that I have the hotspots option in my plan. My download speed just a minute later using only the phone was 15Mbps.
I wonder if there is some internal throttle in ICS or Verizon's version of it.

I do wired tethering via PDANet and average 3 - 5mbps with this phone. It was about the same before & after root. I think it could also be tied in to the radio(reception issues). With past 4G phones I had both better reception and much faster data speeds. I'd say we're probably going to have to sit tight and hope that Verizon releases a fix soon.
It may be related to the stock ROM. I'm running CM9 and get a cap of around 12mbps on wifi tether. Never tested on USB, but I have to assume the cap is due to Wi-Fi limitations.
When tethering via USB, your tether speeds will be limited to the same speed as the slowest USB device connected to your PC at the time. That means unplug all other USB peripherals (where possible) or upgrade them to faster models if you want improve your tether speeds. Koush posted this in his notes somewhere (either in the app description itself on the market, or on his Google+ page) - I remember reading his full disclosure about this issue.
TL;DR version = unplug all USB devices and see if your tether speeds increases. If so, plug them back in, one at a time, until your speeds slow, which can help you determine which device is the culprit. Replace said device with a faster model, or don't use it when tethering.
Edit: I found it! Here's my source for the Tether being limited by your slowest USB device. The quote is here: "Tether speeds slow?
Your USB speed is limited to the speed of the *slowest* peripheral you have connected. It is recommended you unplug any unnecessary/slow USB peripherals to get maximum Tether speeds." That quote is taken right from the app description itself, which can be found alongside the app here: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.koushikdutta.tether

I don't think it's a radio issue. My data speeds to the phone are REALLY high. The only time I have a problem is when the data passes on to the computer. The speed I see on my phone is never an issue regardless of how the phone is configured (to tether). The speed issue is only on the computer side. It's also not a computer issue as I've stated above.
Last I heard, VZW is planning to "fix" signal issues by making the signal icon report a higher value than what it's getting. The DB reading won't change, so they're not lying but they're not telling an honest story either. Surprise!

To clarify my response in this post, I'm not attacking anyone's response. I'm only trying to narrow everything down for anyone who may stumble upon this in the future.
Thanks for the input everyone!
I did a backup and wipe. Installed tether and ran before a restore. Same problems...
I will try a different ROM and get back to you all.
I usually get 20 mb/s down on 4bars of LTE, when tethering with wifi tether beta 3 Located Here and i got 6mb/s tethering to an iphone 4s and 2 ipod touches
I agree I have no problems pulling over 25Mbps using the WiFi Tether app that was linked above. I will say that I would recommend going to the site and go under downloads and use the 3.1 pre113 (experimental version). I have found this to be the most stable for me with the best connectivity.

Understood.
My issue is not with the tethering software though... something deeper within the system configuration is awry.
I loaded the 'AOKP - Team Kang -Build 15' ROM and tethering is blazing. I guess I'll just bounce around on ROMs until I find the cleanest build that is close to stock.
I considered loading stock and wiping out everything, but I don't want to lose what's on /sdcard/ .
From what I understand, loading the stock ROM will completely wipe.
If anyone knows a way around this, please let me know.

When you are flashing different roms you should always wipe data and cache to avoid any issues. I am using the stock rom and then I rooted with CF-Root through fastboot and have no issue with WiFi Tether. I stock with the 113 experimental as it seems to work the best for me on this set up. I would just copy you sd content and the paste it back over once flashed back to factory.
Right. I was trying to avoid copying the SD content again. I have quite a bit of data... :-/
I switched back over to my stock backup because the custom ROMs I tried all crash when I restore from Titanium. Seems as though they all won't run unless you keep the gapps that the dev includes in the ROM.
After some more consideration, it seems as though my tether is pulling data from the 3G side while the rest of the phone runs happily on 4G.
Any ideas?

More info about my problem at the above thread.
Still struggling with this issue...
I have upgraded to 4.0.4 and I noticed speed improvements that lasted the period of the previous weekend. No clue why...
Some other details that might be helpful:
Android-Wifi-Tether is slower than the stock tether with both upload and download speeds slow.
Have tried third party ROMS and experience the same issue. (Slow download, fast upload)
EasyTether Pro now works as you'd expect 4G tether to! Speeds as fast as everything else that runs from my phone.
ClockworkMod Tether is slow like Android-Wifi-Tether. Up and Down speeds < 1M
One server in Columbia, SC on speedtest.net reports speeds > 6M down and 2M up.
Does anyone have any clues as to the difference in the way these two programs operate?
I'm on a Mac and when I first connect I get an error that there is no internet available. I have to turn wifi off and back on from the computer. I leave the phone alone for this.
I've run speed tests on Windows machines with same results
I know someone with a Mifi hotspot that has the same issues I've been describing here. Even with the Columbia, SC server on speedtest.net
Verizon has yet to make contact with him.
Any ideas?

(Q)Solution/fix for alleged T-MB unlimited tether crackdown?

Hello everyone, so as some/most of us know t-mobile has supposedly caught onto the whole unlimited tethering evade method we've all come to use, love and appreciate...none the least I do, very much. It's the reason why I started rooting and getting deeper into "getting the most out of our device" scene.
Anyways, I have been tethering with my grandfathered unlimited plan for a long time with no issues. Methods used from native app mod's built into roms, flash able zips that modify the necessary files no matter the rom, modifying apns/xmls, foxfi, svtp hot spot app and my favorite the WiFi Tether Router app.
Recently though, I've been getting messages about mobile hostpost data usage "x amount has been used" ??? At first I thought it was related to me upgrading to lollipop rom, bootloader baseband and all via Odin...so I downgraded to kit Kat (nk3) which is what I previously had. I did so and tethered like I normally do....bam! got a message x amount of data has been used? So I read around threw a bunch of Q&A threads, general, roms, note3, s6, note4 threads and it's becoming more of a concern to people. Glad/sad I'm not the only one.
Note:I'm currently full nk3, running effortless, lean kernel tethering with the WiFi Tether Router App.
