I've created an app that wakes ambient display when you take the phone out of your pocket or if you have the phone face down and turn it over. The app is in addition to Google's ambient display and does not change your lock screen in anyway.
I added a few other paid features for lift to unlock, wave to unlock, pulsing at an interval, and battery percentage display on the ambient display.
I have a thread going on the Pixel XL forums and a number of people have been testing it out. I think it's stable enough to start spreading the word.
Please let me know if you have any suggestions or run into any problems. Thank you!
Check it out: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.compass.ambiturner
I'm interested, but it appears your link is dead.
Edit: found it in play store. Went ahead and got pro for lift to wake.

Thank you! I fixed the link...cut and paste truncated the link.
I'm testing it since four days and can absolutely recommend it.
No battery drain here at all. Proper functionality and even more options with every new version.
Keep up the great work.
Edit: do you have PayPal? I'm gonna hook you up with a beer.

Haha, thank you. The app support is more than enough thanks!
Just bought the pro version. Coming from a note 7 and missing that ambient display, this great app will do.
Looks great.
Thank you very much sir
Trying it on a Nexus 6p. So far i'm loving it.
Bought pro, thanks!
So I've done some limited testing with the app white listed from doze and so far it improves the responsiveness significantly. I don't know the battery impacts yet, but if it's not noticeable I'll add code to prompt users to white list it.
Other upcoming changes:
Advanced settings to adjust wait times for how long the phone has to be in your pocket or laying flat before a wake can occur.
A pulse option that initially pulses faster when a notification comes in, and progressively shows down until the timeout.
Possibly change in lock screen battery indicator appearance.
Filter on laying flat thresholds. I suspect the accelerometer incorrectly reports the phone tilted while it is laying flat on occasion.
Just bought the Pro version, thanks for the nice app.
Unfortunately the ambient display doesn't light up on my Pixel if the phone is unlocked, e.g. by SmartLock. Typically, I have the phone lying next to me on the desk at work or at home und the phone is unlocked by location based SmartLock. This is where I would like to see incoming notifications without touching the phone. Do you think this is possible to implement?

Doesn't work for me.
More important (maybe only for me): the screen doesn't light up without interaction if the phone is unlocked by smartlock. That's the same behavior as with the ROM build in ambient display feature. It only lights up the screen when the phone is locked.
Thanks a lot for looking into that. This would overcome the disappointing original Google ambient display implementation!
If i can help somehow (testing,...) please let me know.

Tested again..
Ambi-turner enabled.
In display settings
Ambient display : on
Display timeout : 15sec
Security settings:
Pin lock screen after 10min
On/off button locks immediately
(I'm not on an English version, hope the translations are understandable)
The phone is in an area where is unlocked by location based smartlock.
Test 1: wait for 15sec until the screen switches off, wait another minute, send me an WhatsApp from 2nd phone: i hear the notification sound, screen doesn't turn on. If i turn on the display using the on/off button i am on the home screen.
Test 2: switch off the screen by on\off button, (i can hear the lockscreen notification) and send me a WhatsApp from another phone. I hear the notification sound, screen turns on and shows the message. If i turn on the phone by on/off button I'm on the lock screen.
Pixel, version NDE63H
Just bought pro - nice job!
I' ve just tested it on my Nexus 5 with PureNexus 6.0.1 rom. PN has ambient display function in settings but it doesn't work because Nexus 5 doesn't have pick up sensors or pocket sensors. Therefore I've been looking for some solution how to wake it, for example cmactions-wave to wake or similar. For the previous period I've been using GravityBox but it's battery hungry.
I see now that ambi-turner works also, so testing it ATM...

Thank you. I'm posting an update soon. I'm testing a new mechanism that is waking the screen up much more reliably than the current version.
Has anyone noticed any issues while using Lightflow? I have been having issues where my phone won't turn on for about 20-30 seconds sometimes and I have turned everything off and Lightflow was the last that I turned off and so far I have not had this issue again yet. I'm just wondering if anyone else had seen this as well.
I had an issue where I would charge my phone at night. I would wake up in the morning and try to turn the screen on but it would stay off. I would have to reboot it to get it to work. The second time I unplugged the phone and could tell it was unlocking with the finger print reader but the screen would not come on. I forced the reboot and when it came back up I had a notification that lightflow was using more battery than it should. Uninstalled it and haven't had the problem since.
Yeah that app got wayyyy to complicated years ago.
I use Lightmanager now. Much simpler havent had any issues
Light Flow seems to be working well on my 2XL.
As far as Light Flow being complicated, it does have a lot of options but that's a good thing IMO, not a negative.
The devs are attempting to make a program that works well with all brands of phones and Samsung, HTC and LG seem to have different methods for controlling the LED.
Light Flow can bypass the OS to control the LED.
I would suggest you email the developer before you give up or move to another program.
I think Light Flow used to have their own forum here on XDA and maybe they still do.
Seems Navigation Bar Hider can have that same effect. Just installed it last night, and had my first experience with that effect. It's a lot less scary now that I know it's not just my phone, or just one app doing it. I wonder if it's the phone, the OS, or the Apps implementation on the OS. I personally think it's more software based though.
Update: Just looked at Light Flow (never used it personally). It looks like it has an effect with the lock screen. It's a theory, and I don't actually plan to test it if I don't have to, but I THINK both it and Nav Bar Hider having an effect with lock screens (with how I had it set up to be active with everything) is what causes it to not come on when you unlock after extended time. Since i have tuned hider to specific apps instead of generically on by default for everything, the symptom has not come back.
Are you on 8.1? A lot of users have been having a similar issue on the beta.
I've had better luck on Pixels with Light Flow Legacy: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rageconsulting.android.lightflowlegacy
no issues for me with lightflow on 8.0 or 8.1 so far...
Working fine on mine with 8.0.

I do not, not rooted.
only thing checked there is the nexus 5 setting, it must have been enabled by default, I don't remember ticking it.
Hows the battery usage with lightflow anymore? I abandoned it when I got my Nexus 6P as the device would never sleep with lightflow.

Ive never had an issue with it, using it since Nexus 5.
No issues here with my 6p or pixel2 other then it seems to go to sleep if my phone is motionless. Once I wake the screen the led comes on. No battery drain either.

Hello everyone,
I seem to be only able to get Light Flow(Paid version) to work but only while the screen is off and not while the screen is on. I am rooted and I tried setting the options for both root on and root off and I have the option set for the LED to be always on while the screen is on, but again I can only get the LED to show with the app while the screen is off. I'm hoping that someone here can help me out by sharing their settings that they are using that enable them to have the LED on while the screen is either on or off. Maybe they could even share their own settings backup file if they have the app working while the screen is on?
I don't use light flow but I do use immersive mode for the navigation bar and I too have the same issue with the screen not coming in once I plug the charger in. I have to hard reboot the phone. I thought it was the Root causing the issue but it's not. I think it happens when hide the navigation bar

It is a hiding the nav bar issue. The dev behind "Custom Navigation Bar" has supposedly figured out the problem and said that it doesn't happen when using that app for immersive mode.

Hello everyone,
I asked a question last week but I think it may have been missed or overlooked, so I am bumping it in hopes of getting an answer.
is anyone here able to get the paid version of this app to show/change the notification LED while the screen is on? I am able to change the color of the LED and it shows for all the notifications that I have set while the screen is off, but no matter what I do, I'm unable to get the LED to light up with my notifications while the screen is turned on, even though I have the setting enabled to do so.
So I would like to know what settings ppl are using to enable the LED to light up while the screen is either off or on? because ppl have mentioned in this thread that they have the app working for both screen off and on, so if someone that has this working could please share how they have the app configured, or what they did to get this feature working, then it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks a lot guys...
Can anyone tell me if there is a built-in "night mode" on the 2XL? Coming from an S7 Edge there was an option in the settings that at a preset time the always on display would switch to a very minimal display that was only across one edge of the screen, it made for a nice alarm clock without being too bright overnight, then at a preset time it would revert to its normal settings of a large clock, displaying notifications, calendar etc.
I know I could use something like Alarm Clock Plus, but am trying to avoid having to install an app if there is built in functionality to do the same thing.
Thanks.
no
Short and sweet. Thanks. There are definitely a couple things Google could learn from Samsung on just small things like that though.
yep. but in the dark the ambient display is not bright so dont be afraid of burning your eyes.
The closest thing I have to what you are asking is using Tasker to turn off AOD when DND is enabled.
I have a profile to enable DND overnight, which in turn disables AOD.

That's not a bad idea, I paid for Tasker long ago (run it on my Nexus 7 in the car) so it would just be a case of setting it up on the Pixel.
There is a clock screensaver for when phone is plugged. I don't use always on display but want to be able to see clock without touching phone. You can adjust tue brightness of it via nightmode switch. Under display - screensaver h clock ...

In case you were wanting to actually implement this, I double checked how I did it, and it's with the paid plugin "AutoTools".
I turn the AOD on when I'm connected to BT in my car since it's on a mount and also off at 10pm. If the task runs when your screen is off you do need to turn your screen on for it to take effect. So I check if my screen is off. If it is I have it turn on and off briefly.
trigger always on using tasker auto tools
New Task
Plugin -> Autotools -> Secure Settings
Configure
Custom Setting
Setting Type = "Secure"
Name = "doze_always_on"
Input Type = "Int"
Value = "0" OFF/ "1" ON
I've done some testing and I can't tell if it even works...not sure if a reboot is required or what each time...maybe someone else can add to this.
The below article might be fine for a stock Rom, but doesn't seem to work on Nitrogen with a kernel/magisk.
You need to have ambient brightness turned on though, otherwise, the default values are used and these overrides don't work.
https://www.xda-developers.com/customize-google-pixel-2-always-on-display-brightness/
If you hit the battery saver before you go to bed that will deactivate always on.
Turn battery saver off in the morning and always on will be back on.
Should solve your problem!
Or just flip the screen over. That deactivates it as well.

I just lay a business card over the sensors, since my thin case has no lip!
Just download it on the Playstore NotifyBuddy. The app developer XanderApps made an amazing simple app to bring back a simple and beautiful notification light when the screen is off. Easy to configure, allow all the permissions, pick the apps you want it to show the light for, choose a color, and that's it. You can tinker with the settings for the duration of the blink, how long it takes to blink again, and how long it blinks for, which is a big one for me because other apps do not let it go for very long from what I've seen. The developer also said that there is screen in burn protection built-in! The only thing is AOD settings get disabled when there is a notification as well as screen-off fingerprint unlock and a double tap of the screen is needed to wake the phone up, or alternatively press the power button.
No notification light is an issue I had found with the note 10 + coming from the Note 8 and this is resolved for the most part
Lemmi know what you guys think about it !

Haven't logged in in awhile but it can be used with or without edge lighting. I just tested with a 15 second delay (found in the notify buddy settings) and it works.
Have a nice day !
I like the idea of it but I don't like that it doesn't work as well there like when I plug in the charger it doesn't allow the display to turn off until I manually do it
Hmmm, I just tried on my Note10 plus. Plugged in charger, screen timed out at the 30 seconds I have it set to time out, charging led was present.

Fingerprint unlock doesn't seem to work unless you tap the screen to wake and then fingerprint unlock. Also the position seems to change slightly every time the notification blinks. I was putting it around the camera hole and the first blink is perfect around the camera but then the others are off to either side with each blink. Once these are fixed and I make sure there's no battery drain, I would probably buy the premium version.
Hey Guys,
So something very annoying I've noticed so far since owning this phone. I could have it laying on the table/counter, whatever. I have lift to wake and any other motion related setting to turn the screen on disabled, however, if I so much as nudge my phone while it's sitting the screen will always wake. Does this happen to anyone else? Is there some other hidden setting I've yet to disable and need to? Is it a glitch or something? Appreciate any ideas or suggestions.
Thanks!
You are not the only one observing this behavior. I believe it's a software glitch. It's has been mentioned on other forums as well.
I don't think it's a glitch. People have said the "fix" is to turn off fingerprint option. So I'm thinking it's actually a feature to turn on the screen so it's ready for your finger print. It's different than lift to wake because it only shows the Always On Display. Lift to wake, goes past the Always On Display and to the lock screen. I've tested it in my pocket and it's stays fully off.

There is doze_quick_pickup_gesture option that you can set via adb. Just setup adb shell (google how to do it if you don't have it), then enable developer options on your phone (google it too), then connect your phone to your PC and execute this command in the shell:

Yes i think its a bug when adaptive sound is on and it hears loud sounds, ot turns the screen on. Just try banging the desk or hitting two spoons when near your phone with adaptive sound on and off... The screen lights up when its ON bit doesn't when its off
I am having just the opposite effect. I lift my phone and nothing happens. I have to click my power button for it to go on sometimes.
If you refer to Lift to check BLACK SCREEN It is a feature for easy to use fingerprint so that very helpful for me
