Title basically. My phone's bootloader is already unlocked but running stock rom and no root, but i want to be able to use apps like gpay, so my plan was to install twrp then flash a custom kernel. Is this possible to do without wiping my phone's data?

I'm just wondering why Sprint's ota updates don't require a data wipe, but flashing the stock ROM in a custom recovery needs the wipe? I installed cnexus's rooted stock on my phone and initially tried a dirty flash, but had problems, so I wiped and did a clean install and all is good. My wife's phone is being prompted for the ota and I want to update her but I'd prefer not to have the Knox bootloader. I would simply update her phone as I did mine, but she'll kill me if I wiped her data. So, why can the ota install without the data wipe but the (essentially) same ROM installed manually can't? Anybody know?
An OTA just adds new file, a rom overwrites the entire system, that's why a full wipe is always recommended. I think there is a thread somewhere here that has flashable OTAs though. It sounds like she is rooted, so why don't you use a backup app like titanium?
Titanium is great and you will never have to worry about losing data. Plus its good to clear out the phone every once and awhile to keep it running fresh.
Hey guys, I unlocked the bootloader, flashed twrp and root. Then I proceeded to do a fastboot format userdata. But after the boot the encryption was still there. Now I am running PureNexus latest build along with ElementalX kernel. I would like to remove encryption when I will be flashing another rom, How do I do that? Do I simply need to do a fastboot format userdata? Will I lose Twrp and root if I do that?
If you format user data and then boot with the stock kernel it will just re encrypt the device.
Only way to stop this to format usersata and then BEFORE booting the device flashing a kernel or custom rom with force encrypt disabled.
Keep in mind the installation instructions that come with your custom ROM or kernel though. Some require you to be on stock before flashing.
I would generally consider dirty flashing a different ROM over purenexus a bad idea, so you best revert to stock, format user data to disable encryption, do a factory reset then install the new custom rom.
You will lose everything though and have to start from scratch. You may get away with using titanium backup for backup and restoring apps if you know what you are doing.
If the ROM has a kernel with force encrypt disabled then you just flash the whole ROM through fastboot and boot it. What ROM are going to try?
Someone told me on reddit to just simply format data using twrp and that it will remove the encryption and wipe my whole internal storage. Is that correct?
I believe it does just that.
Hey,
My LG G3 currently running Android 5.0 (V21-SEA-XX), rooted, lastest TWRP flashed with AutoRec.
I want to CLEAN flash nightly CM13 and I have few questions:
1. After downloading ROM and GApps, where should I put them? Internal memory/SD card?
2. What should I backup in TWRP to get full backup? and where should I move the backup to before wiping?
3. What do I need to wipe to get the cleanest install possible? I own my G3 for over 2 years and it has a lot of junk on it. (of course without wiping the SD card)
4. Anything special you recommend me to backup with Titanium Backup?
5. Do I need to flash Modem? (My device is running 13.00002)

1. You can put them wherever you want. In internal or sd. If you are wiping internal, don't put it there
2. You can do a full backup using TWRP if you want a full backup of your current Rom, kernal, apps and so on. But it's not necessarily needed of you're sure that you don't mess things up.
3. A normal wipe(dalvik, cache and system) on TWRP is quite enough for installation of a rom. But if you want to wipe internal you can do that as well.
4. If you're not doing a TWRP backup, you can backup your apps using titanium backup. This is what I normally do, because I only usually need a backup of my apps and data, and not of the current rom(because we can reflash it later of needed).
5. You need to flash a 21B modem. Usually changing from stock based to cm roms requires change in modem.
And one more thing, you're just flashing a rom after 2 years [emoji15]
G3 D855---ROM : #DU ---Xposed
Thanks.
Few questions -
1. Why not flash 21C modem?
2. Can you tell me exactly what do I need to wipe in TWRP to wipe everything except SD card?
System, Dalvik, Cache, Internal Storage.. Data too?
Hi, on other phones I used to dirty flash without any problem.
My question is, if I use an encrypted rom (ex. Codename Phoenix) how can I flash another ROM without need to wipe everything and restore everything afterwards?

I don't think you can avoid a full wipe when going from an encrypted ROM to an decrypted ROM but I could be wrong.
Hi,
I didn't find a definitive answer looking into XDA, is it possible to relock without wiping your data?
I only want to lock it if I don't have to reinstall everything, after setting it back to stock (I'm already on Stock with Magisk) with a clean boot image.

something else what do you want with magisk without a patched boot.img ??
and as has already been said, the relock of the bootloader is connected to a wipe, as is the case with unlocking
I would strongly recommend against locking your bootloader if you are not on a clean flash. If anything in /system doesn't pass vbmeta verification, the system will not boot.
User data shouldn't matter, but the safest way is always to perform a complete factory flash including a wipe.
