[Q] Now CM 10, 4.1.2 going to 4.2.2. How easy to go back?

I've been running CM 10, 4.1.2, on Verizon gn. Works fine.
But I can't leave well enough alone, and want to try 4.2.2.
That should be easy right, just flash the recent CM 10.1. No cache wiping. Right?
But if I do that and I don't like it. how do I go back? Is it as simple as just flashing CM 10?
Also, I have Ti backup. The backup folder is sdcard/TitaniumBackup. I've read that 4.2.2 creates /sdcard/0/ for data. Does this mean that my present backup will be deleted?
Any help appreciated.

Since you are migrating Android versions, I would recommend that you do a full wipe, so system, data, and cache (and restore apps from TiBu if you must). You can do a nandroid backup from recovery; if you don't like 4.2 just restore it. When restoring a nandroid backup everything will be exactly the same.

I just upgraded from 4.1.2 to 4.2.2 and had the same concern about being able to go back if I had problems and knowing that the partitioning of internal storage would be changed.
I recently got my GN back from Samsung after getting the screen replaced. Before sending it off, I totally wiped and reset the phone to stock. I made sure I did a full Ti backup first, then a Nandroid backup, and finally copied the entire contents of internal storage via "adb pull" to my desktop computer. When I got the phone back, I reversed the process and was able to restore the phone entirely to where it was before the wipe.
I did the same operation before upgrading to 4.2.2, without wiping the phone. So if I'd have wanted to go back to 4.1.2, I'd have wiped the phone, including internal storage, and restored as described above. I'm pretty confident that this would have removed the new partitioning from 4.2.2 and reset it to where it was before the 4.2.2 upgrade.

So I do a nandroid backup from TWRP 2.4.4.0, system, data and cache
From TWRP flash the CM 4.2.2.
Do nandroid restore from TWRP?
Flash gapps, restore apps from TiBu.
Now if want to go back to 4.1.2:
Flash 4.1.2, wipe system data cache.
Flash gapps, restore apps from TiBu
Do I have this correct?

Nandroid the entire thing from TWRP, wipe system, data and cache from TWRP, flash CM10.1 and gapps from TWRP, restore apps from TiBu in ROM. If you don't like it just restore the nandroid from TWRP. TiBu only restores apps, nandroid restores everything: ROM, account, system settings, apps, etc.

The only extra thing I referred to was making a full copy of your phone's internal storage to your computer using "adb pull". This would allow you to wipe the internal storage and restore it, in case the partitioning change from "/storage/sdcard0" to "/storage/emulated/0" needed to be removed. But if TWRP's nandroid backup and restore takes care of this, this step isn't necessary.

How easy? Dead easy.

S4 wipe data internal or external etc

Helping my aunt do her phone to add google edition rom 4.2.2 i know how to root and install cwm but I know I need to transfer the rom do I need to transfer it on sd card because wipe data factory reset will delete all internal storage? And using that rom do I need to flash the tmobile kernel?

You need to flash the T-Mobile kernel, if you want to put the ROM on the internal SD card simply flash it first then wipe.

It doesn't matter whether you put the ROM zip on the external SD card or the internal memory. Before you flash a ROM you want to wipe cache, dalvik, data, and system.. not after. Wiping those partitions won't touch your internal storage; though it is true that if you want a clean slate after flashing the GE4.2.2, you could go through the steps, then wipe internal storage only AFTER the flash.

Can you link to me the tmobile kernel I want to make sure I get the right one so I have no problems and
it's only the ge edition 4.2.2 and 4,3 needs tmobile kernel right but the rest don't?
and wipe data factory reset deletes internal right?
So flash first then wipe data factory reset?

Download the Rom you want to flash.
If it is not for the SGH M919 (T Mobile S4), you will need to also download ANY SGH-M919 Kernel.
Cut out the middle man and just grab a GE rom from the T Mobile Development Thread.

Throw the rom onto your external SD.
I recommend wiping everything for a clean slate, especially because you are changing everything about the phone, (data, factory reset, caches, internal, system).
This rom specifically gives you a nice little Aroma (or customization) while flashing the rom onto the phone.

T-Mobile kernels are in the Original Android Development section here. And no, it's not JUST the 4.2.2 and 4.3 needing TMO kernels; it's ANY Galaxy S4 ROM you flash outside of the T-Mobile development section. Best way to remember, if you download it from the T-Mobile section, no need to flash a kernel. If you download the ROM from any other S4 section, you WILL need a T-Mobile kernel. Also worth noting is that there are kernels for TouchWiz and AOSP/CM. A TouchWiz kernel will not work on AOSP/CM and vice versa. The GE 4.2.2, having the TouchWiz framework, can use any of the TouchWiz kernels here (not AOSP, also useless information if you d/l from the TMO dev section); but I won't comment on what kernels the 4.3 can use as I'm not exactly sure.
And as for what to wipe, it depends on what recovery you're using; I haven't used CWM in almost a year, so if you use CWM my recommendations may be a little off. I've used TWRP ever since it was ported to my previous device, so my directions are from using TWRP; the only time internal storage will be wiped is if you select it from the advanced wipe menu. None of the other options (dalvik cache, system, data, cache) will wipe your internal storage. If you are simply changing between different TouchWiz ROMs, there is no need to wipe data. The data partition should work fine between all TouchWiz ROMs. If I'm switching between TW ROMs, the order I use is to: wipe dalvik, system, and cache at one time; then flash the ROM and, if the ROM isn't for the M919, flash kernel. The only difference in my method when moving from TW to CM or vice versa is that I format data also. I haven't experienced too many problems saving data between ROMs of the same type; i.e. ParanoidAndroid and CM, or different versions of TouchWiz... but if you're moving from a CM variant to a TouchWiz ROM, it's really a good idea to go ahead and wipe your data partition.
And as always, if you experience problems in any ROM you flash, try wiping everything (dalvik, system, data, and cache) and trying from a clean slate. Another thing to keep in mind, if you use TiBu to backup your apps and data, there can be problems if using app data between CM and TW. When you restore, be sure to check App only and not App+data. I definitely wouldn't recommend interchanging app data between 4.3 and ANY version of 4.2.2.

Stock Backups

for some reason my stock backups from the virgin ndc do not boot after i use a lp or mm rom. im using twrp 3. Someone posted about the stock backups not restoring but no help in that thread. clean wipes do not work either.

Clean wipe means, also wipe internal storage. To boot a KitKat ROM or restore a backup after lp or mm, you must wipe everything except external sd. It's the way lp and mm encrypt the internal storage.

Are you sure you're wiping internal? Not just wipe data, format internal (data/media) storage. Do it twice if you have to. If you've definitely done that, then your backup is corrupt. Because once you wipe internal (and data and system) you've removed all traces of mm or lp. So the previous rom has nothing to do with FC. Are you trying to restore titanium backups of apps from mm onto kk? Don't.
Also, have you moved apps to external sd on any rom? If you have, and not properly removed that data, it can cause problems.

no the fcs happen right at boot. dont see how my backup is corrupted and yea ive wiped internal storage. not that much of a noob lol just new to this device. what i did was restored with ndc tar and then flashed twrp then booted back to stock to make sure everything is ok. Then make a backup then clean wipe again to install lp or mm roms then if i do another clean wipe and restore stock backup fcs on boot.

Question about roms that require full wipe (newbie)

It has been a long time since I have installed roms and when I did in the past my HTC incredible had a sd card so it was easy to get data on/off the device.
I have noticed that several ROM installs for the HTC One m7 require a full wipe which would wipe my restore backups as well. But I wanted to maintain my TWRP backup so I can revert if the ROM doesn't work or if I don't like it's features.
Can I maintain the backup and install or do I have to full wipe ?
Can I pull the backup off and then put it back on. I am sure I could get it off but once I have a bad install not sure how I could put it back on the device.
I have S-Off and Unlocked Bootloader on Verizon device.

Full wipe means BOOT, CACHE, DALVIK CACHE, DATA, & SYSTEM....
NOT INTERNAL STORAGE! NO rom install requires wiping internal storage, as THAT'S where all your TWRP BACKUPS, pics, videos, Roms, etc. Are all stored on your devicw.
So in a nutshell, NEVER WIPE INTERNAL STORAGE. IT ISN'T NEEDED FOR ANY ROM INSTALL

OK Thanks that makes more sense. Some instructions say to do exactly that "Wipe Cache,dalvik,data,system" and some say "Must perform Full Wipe" and the later was making me think I needed to wipe the whole device.

Need help to install custom rom

Hello,
I don't know why my lg g3 phone doesn't want boot on custom rom.
I have the LG G3 d855 model, 16gb memory and here are my procedure to install every custom rom :
1. Flash Stock ROM using LGUP (the version of the firmware is not important but the possibility to root is)
2. Install KingRoot and get root
3. Install AutoREC and enter to the recovery
8. Flash Recovery TWRP 3.1.0-2
9. Reboot to the new recovery
10. ADVANCED WIPE (wipe cache, dalvik cache, data and SYSTEM)
11. Flash baseband 21C
12. Flash CUSTOM rom
13. Wipe cache and dalvik cache
14. Flash Gapp
15. Wipe cache and dalvik cache
16. Reboot
I think I did nothing bad...
but the phone does not start and it stays at the initial logo screen (not the LG logo, but the custom rom logo). I waited over 10 minutes to boot but nothing. Even though I install the identical rom again or install an anoter rom, each time the same issue.
This happens with all custom rom (xenonhd, resurrection remix, and now lineageOS)
I can use and boot on stock rom but each time I want to install a custom rom, my phone doesn't want to boot. The phone display stays at the initial rom logo screen.
It seems that I am alone to have this problem.
I don't know why and I search everywhere to find out the solution...
PS : My phone never restart by itself. I never have bootloop with my phone when I using stock rom and same with custom rom..
The problem is the boot with a custom rom. The phone don't want to boot and stay on logo loading...
Any suggestion may be help.

1. Once you installed TWRP you don't have to go back to stock to switch roms. From then on you can just download zips and flash them.
2. You need to delete everything (including system) except internal and external storage ( so you can still flash the zip for xceed, otherwise you will delete it). Remember that you will lose all your apps including your data with it. You can backup them with titanium backup tho. Pictures and video's will still be there as they are stored on the internal or external storage.
3. You also need to flash the GAPPS package after flashing rom, for xceed (7.1.1), pick nano (ARM)
4. Wipe cache and dalvik after flashing and reboot.
5. Make a backup before you do so !!!!!!

1. I think that but with specific rom, some people tell us to flash stock rom before flashing a custom rom. eMMC bug related ?
2. Deleting the system changes nothing because the system is wiped when I flash the rom, right ?

2. Try it, you won't be able to boot until you flash a new rom, but it could help. That's why you take a backup in the first place. It is more 'clean' and if you don't try it you won't know.
3. Sometimes you have to flash gapps directly after the rom or you will be in for a bad time if you do afterwards.
Once you have TWRP recovery installed it's the easiest thing ever to flash a new rom. Make sure your zip files are downloaded okay. Download the MD3 to check it. Try to download via MEGA app or so, because browsers downloads tend to have errors sometimes.
Apart from that. Don't root via kingroot. They have had some suspicious cases where malware was installed on the phone when rooting.
If nothing's works. Go back to full stock through KDZ, root wit your PC, install TWRP via autorec, go to recovery, wipe everything, install modem 21C, install rom and gapps, wipe cache, reboot. Don't try anything other than that.

I have a question.
Can you give me a gapp 100% compatible with all custom rom with android 7.1.2, because i think opengapp are not reliable. Maybe the gapp will cause my issue and the rom won't boot.
