[Q] Will Loading a rom wipe data?

Sorry for the noob question, but, yeah will loading a rom wipe my phone?
Also I was wondering if any good overclocking/undervolting roms have been realeased yet for the GNex?

In short, yes, it will. Merely unlocking your bootloader, which is step one if you're on a stock GNex, will cause your phone to be wiped automatically. After that, it's possible to install ROMs without wiping, but it's a bad idea since there's no guarantee that roms A and B are 100% compatible with each other. Every ROM I've seen recommends wiping when you first install it (many will let you upgrade to a newer version of the same ROM without wiping).

I unlocked the bootloader day 1.

on a related note: when you wipe to install a new ROM, will it wipe the entire phone storage (like when you unlocked the bootloader)? when I unlocked my bootloader it wiped everything off including my music, pics, ringtones, etc.... if that happens everytime than i might just stay away from installing new rooms and stay stock w/ root

When you unlock your bootloader, it will wipe your /sdcard/, but when you "wipe data/factory reset" it will leave the contents of the /sdcard/. So you should be able to keep your images and such, but you'll have to reinstall your apps. TitaniumBackup seems to work well enough for this. It backs up to your /sdcard/ but I still copy it to my computer just to be safe.

On my N1, when moving from one rom to another, I wipe Data, Cache, and Dalvik. Would I do the same on my GN and if so would the virtual sd card be left untouched?
If so, that would be great!

I haven't wiped cache or dalvik (dunno if I was supposed to, but so far it doesn't seem to have created any problems) but I believe that doing the above will leave your virtual sdcard untouched. After all, it has to be able to read the new ROM from somewhere, right?

[Q] How to upgrade rom without data wipe

Hello,
I have an Amazon Kindle Fire with gedeROM v1.7. I love the updates because it makes my device better and better.
But can i update my device without data wipe so i don't have to reinstall and reconfigure the entire device every time. And if I can can someone please tell me how.
My usual procedure is download file, data wipe, clear davlik and cache, flash, wipe cache restart and wonderfull a better device. But all the data and apps go with the wipe so any help would be awesome!

If you're not switching to a different ROM (ie, from CM7 to CM9, or from hashcode to energy...) then you can optionally skip the data wipe (factory reset), which will retain your data and applications...
Alternatively, you may want to take a look at Titanium Backup.

I have been hearing a lot about Titanium Backup, can you give more info about the program.

With TB you can back up any apps on your device. Then when you update a rom just download TB again and then you can restore your apps that you backed up. I love TB and use it on every device that I have rooted. It is a lifesaver!! Ok maybe a time saver anyway!! LOL!!!!

I had a REALLY bad experience from not wiping everything completely. I'd definitely do a backup, like Titanium or MyBackupPro, and wipe it all just to be safe. To many goofy things can happen if you don't.

It really depends on what ROM your flashing. There are rare occasions you can cross flash without issue. Not recommended. Just updating the same ROM so wipe is necessary, unless mentioned by the dev.
If you do wipe than BUYING titanium backup is the way to go. The free version doesn't auto install apps, each needs confirmation.
I can get any ROM on the kf or my gnex but up and running in less than 15 minutes.

this is what I have been doing and I am not sure if it's bad to do or not. I make a backup of just my data using twrp, then I wipe the caches and do a factory reset. Then I install the rom, and then restore my data using twrp

Restoring your backed up data is akin to not having done "factory reset" in the first place.
You shouldn't encounter any major issues so long as you're flashing newer versions of the same ROM and there hasn't been a large change (for example, switching to linaro).

[Q] Desire stuck on CM boot after first reboot

Hi,
I recently rooted my htc desire, unrevoked method, flashed default recovery. Before flashing the stable CM for Desire, I wiped dalvik cache, wiped all data, wiped cache partition. After the installation, I logged into my google account. Problems started when going into settings resulted in going to blank settings page. Same goes for any settings window (system, play store settings). Whats more, after every single CM I install, the phone gets stuck on CM loading screen, after installing the rom, setting everything up and rebooting for the first time. The phone is S-ON. I'll try to upload logs from debugger soon.

You should s-off before installing any custom rom. Did you make a backup before installing cm7?

Wow, really? Some custom gb seemed to work just fine with s-on. I think I have a backup but I wouldn't count on it, it may have some files missing. I'm not sure now whether unrevoked did s-off on that phone, will check as soon as I get back to it.

You don't have to s-off to install custom Rom, only a custom recovery.
However it is much more useful to have s-off than not so it's thoroughly recommended.
For instance, you can change hboot to use your internal memory partition layout and have more space. Currently you are on stock hboot with 250MB /system but your Rom system size is much less, so you are wasting space.
Changing hboot will give you smaller system and more internal memory
S-off will also allow you to change recovery to something like 4ext (see my sig), allowing more reliable and easier partitioning of sdcard.
Regarding your specific problem, not sure you did a proper full wipe before installing? Need to use the wipe data/factory reset option within recovery as a minimum before installing new rom

Every single install, wiping data, cache, dalvik cache as well. Everything done from within recovery. Logs indicate a problem with hw audio decoding, though I might be wrong.

did you specifically use the "wipe data/factory reset" option within recovery, or only the "format data" option under mounts and storage?
the "wipe data/factory reset" also formats the /system partition, which is just as important /data. cache and dalvik are just temporary files, should get wiped anyway on fresh rom install, but no harm in manually wiping.
haven't had time to look at the logs, not an expert in them anyway. you could try to install a different ROM to see if you have the same issues, or restore a nandoid (hope you made one, you should always do this before wiping/flashing).

[Q] format internal memory samsung galaxy s 4

so i formated the internal storage with team win rcovery. I installed Alpha s4 v2.0 and it works fine but when i install anyothere mods and reboot my phone it stays on the logo Galaxy S 4 logo and I have to re flash the ROM again but i have to formatted the internal storage again just to flash the rom . does any one have any idea how to fix this pls help

what do you mean like how ? because installing rom like doing a factory reset doesn't work get me on to the Galaxy S 4 logo and that it. I have to format the data just to install any Rom dont know why but im getting frustrated about it

Should be an option in mount storage or advanced section of recovery to format .

STOP!!! TWRP is known for messing up your phone when you format internal memory. It will lead to bootloops and even the rom not booting at all. Switch recoveries to Clockwork or Philz and you will be fine. You may need to Odin back to stock to fix the issue first.

What to Wipe in TWRP
If you are switching ROMs (changing from one ROM to a completely different one) then you should perform a factory reset. A factory reset wipes data and cache (which includes dalvik cache). A factory reset will also wipe sd-ext and android_secure if your device has those items. 99% of the time, this is all that you need to wipe and you only need to do it once, not three times as some people would lead you to believe.
If you're installing a nightly update, then oftentimes you don't need to wipe anything at all. However, if you encounter strange behavior, then you may want to consider performing a factory reset. Of course, if the ROM maker recommends that you do a factory reset during an update, then it's a good idea to follow their recommendation.
The vast majority of ROMs wipe system as part of the zip install. This means that in most cases you do not need to wipe system... ever.
At this point, cache (not dalvik cache) is primarily used for recovery. It's used to store the recovery log and for storing OTA (Over The Air) updates. You probably don't need to wipe cache, and cache is already wiped as part of a factory reset.
In most ROMs, dalvik cache is stored in the data partition, so if you do a factory reset, you've also wiped dalvik cache. In a few custom ROMs, especially on older devices with small data partitions, the ROM maker may have moved dalvik to the cache partition to provide you with more room for apps. Since we wipe cache with a factory reset, again, you probably don't need to wipe dalvik. There are a few situations where you may need to wipe dalvik cache when installing updates, but you will know that it's needed when you are greeted with force closes when trying to open some apps.
Depending on your device and its configuration, you may have options for wiping internal storage, external storage, sd-ext, android_secure, and/or an option for formatting data. There's almost no reason that you would ever need to use these items. These options are there for convenience. For instance, if you're getting ready to sell your device, then it's a good idea to wipe everything on the device so that the new owner doesn't get your private data. Note that these wipe options may not be completely destructive. If you store especially sensitive information on your device or are really concerned about your private data, then you may need to look into other options to ensure that your data is fully destroyed.

I an trying to wipe my ROM and reinstall a fresh ROM. In TWRP Recovery, if I hit wipe system and data wipe, will that effect my back-ups on TWRP? Trying wipe the current one and restore the very first backup after installing the revolution HD M8 9.1 .

Only wiping Internal SD will wipe twrp backups. So wiping system, data and caches should be fine.
Sometimes things go wrong though. Good to have a backup of a backup off the device. And/or another rom zip. Titanium backup backups are good to store off device too. And pics, etc.
Bad things happen... And it's a drag when all your stuff goes away. :good:
Storing things as backup on an external sd is good too... But not fool proof either.

Agree to all the above. Always give yourself multiple ways out of a jam; and taking a few minutes to backup off-device is a great way to avoid regret and headaches.
