Sorry for the noob question, but, yeah will loading a rom wipe my phone?
Also I was wondering if any good overclocking/undervolting roms have been realeased yet for the GNex?

In short, yes, it will. Merely unlocking your bootloader, which is step one if you're on a stock GNex, will cause your phone to be wiped automatically. After that, it's possible to install ROMs without wiping, but it's a bad idea since there's no guarantee that roms A and B are 100% compatible with each other. Every ROM I've seen recommends wiping when you first install it (many will let you upgrade to a newer version of the same ROM without wiping).
I unlocked the bootloader day 1.
on a related note: when you wipe to install a new ROM, will it wipe the entire phone storage (like when you unlocked the bootloader)? when I unlocked my bootloader it wiped everything off including my music, pics, ringtones, etc.... if that happens everytime than i might just stay away from installing new rooms and stay stock w/ root

When you unlock your bootloader, it will wipe your /sdcard/, but when you "wipe data/factory reset" it will leave the contents of the /sdcard/. So you should be able to keep your images and such, but you'll have to reinstall your apps. TitaniumBackup seems to work well enough for this. It backs up to your /sdcard/ but I still copy it to my computer just to be safe.

On my N1, when moving from one rom to another, I wipe Data, Cache, and Dalvik. Would I do the same on my GN and if so would the virtual sd card be left untouched?
If so, that would be great!

I haven't wiped cache or dalvik (dunno if I was supposed to, but so far it doesn't seem to have created any problems) but I believe that doing the above will leave your virtual sdcard untouched. After all, it has to be able to read the new ROM from somewhere, right?

Hi,
For example, on my galaxy s2, i pictures, movies, apps and whenever i did a hard-reset everything was deleted.
But on galaxy nexus the only thing i notice gets deleted is the apps i install, so the pictures are still there, and the files i create are also still there. I've also tried with a full wipe tool, but still they're there.
Is there something wrong with my phone, or there's no hard-reset like the s2?
I have Android revulotion HD rom with Original stock kernel.

Ive actually noticed this myself the last time I "wiped" my device and found the same thing. Pics, etc were all still there even though it put me through the steps for setting up my phone again as it did when I first got it.
Why IS this happening?

I know, but is this a bug, or is there another option for erasing everything on the sd beside doing it from the pc?
thanks
If you factory reset from the settings menu it is supposed to be a full wipe. If you factory reset from recovery it does not wipe the SD card.

I was having this terrible experience while I was trying to do a factory reset before flashing a new build from AOKP. Nothing was deleted, and I tried like 3 times : Factory Reset in Android, Wipe Data in Recovery, etc...nothing changed.
Finally, I flashed back the stock rom 4.0.2 from Google and did a factory reset and it worked, everything was erased including pics, musics, apps, etc.
So obviously it's a bug. You can ONLY do a factory reset in stock rom (ics) but not in a custom rom (AOKP or Android HD, ...).
Hope it helps.

If you're meaning me, then if you also would read, then you would understand, that i was saying factory reset, AND recovery mode wipe, so i mean, i tried everything i could. But heo_con184 explained everything for me now, and now i know it's the ROM 4.03 that can't do this.
thanks
I've got an similar problem, but in my case "wipe data/ factory reset" from recovery mode doesn't delete anything. When I choose "wipe data/ factory reset" in recovery and then choose to reboot after it tells me it finished deleting, it just boots like nothing has changed. It doesn't aks me to setup my phone (Galaxy Nexus). I also tried to wipe the cash in recovery. I also tried "fastboot oem unlock" which should delete data as an side-affect (for security-reasons). I tried CWM (ClockWorkMod recovery) to do a wipe of cash, dalvik-chache and a reset with CWM. But after all this affords every time I boot my device it shows the home-screen with all the app-logos arranged in exactly the same positions as I have arranged them (not the default positions and I'm not asked to go through setup). After showing me the homescreen for a few seconds, it reboots (thats the reason why I want to do a reset).
Has anybody an Idea how I could get my phone to work again?
Maybe flashing the OS (https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images)?
The strange thing is that I have never modified the OS. I have always only used the automativ OTA updates.

Have you tried wiping internal storage ? Wiping data wipes installed apps , your info like email and just returns you to a state of re-setting up the rom . I would think you'd need to also wipe internal storage where pics , music , downloads , nandroids etc and everything else is stored . I'm not saying it's not a bug , just asking if anyone having the issue has tried that from recovery .
One more thing to the guy who wanted to wipe everything to install a custom rom . There's absolutely no need to wipe internal storage to flash a rom . If you were installing a new version of windows would you delete all the drives where your pictures and everything else you've ever collected just to put windows on c drive ? Absolutely no you wouldn't . This is about the same thing .Wiping system , data , cache and dalvik is all you ever need to do going from kitkat to Lollipop or anywhere else . NO NEED . Recovery's and custom roms are set up like that to protect the people who might accidently wipe all their treasured stuff from storage and then crying for days at the loss .
When I'm flashing a new ROM, I like to install it as cleanly as possible. Usually a factory reset along with wiping cache and dalvik. Doing this, I know my sdcard contents will remain safe. Does wiping system in TWRP wipe out my sdcard as well? If not, I'll start doing that as well. If it does, I guess I won't.
no, only /system.
only time your SDCARD is wiped is if you choose format /sdcard.
No. Wiping system wipes /system. Wiping internal storage wipes the internal storage. The two don't cross at all.
Thanks a lot, both of you.
For giggles, what does wiping system do? Obviously wipes system, but I mean in terms of flashing a new ROM. How is it beneficial, I guess is what I'm asking.

it makes the /system partition is clean so there is no remnants of the previous rom.
most rom installs include a script that wipe it, so generally its not needed.
You will also lose the contents of /sdcard when you lock/unlock your bootloader. (root)

Hey Guys
Yep
Very useful. One up from me as well. IS TWRP only way to do FULL WIPE or are there alternatives? For example, can this be achieved without being rooted?
bump LOL does wiping the ext_sd actually wipe the data or is it still accessible via linux? im hoping that it only deletes the data table
nvm, it only deletes the data table. Data recovered, crisis averted
I know this is now 4 months old, so using twrp system wipe- wipes out the current android firmware too or no?
If you just want to delete everything from Android SD card , you'd better use eraser tool to do ,
Once you use it to erase your Android SD card , all of the data save on the SD card can be completely deleted ,

Just got a T999 GS3 today. Already rooted and installed TWRP. I do not have an External SD card, so I will be putting the ROM that I want to flash (CM10 Stable) on internal SD card. But since I have to WIPE everything before I install the Custom ROM, how do I make sure that I don't wipe the custom ROM install zip as well?
Do I just do a WIPE of cache, dalvik cache, and system? And make sure that I do not wipe internal storage?
Or is there something else to this?
Thanks!!
Do a factory reset wipe system then wipe both caches install ROM wipe both caches again and fix permissions you should be good.

No, there is a seperate option for that.
1. Factory reset
2. Flash ROM and various files
3. reset dalvik cache and cache
4. Reboot
Easy as that
Which method you followed to root? I just got the phone and look ing for the easy way to root. I heard a lot about lost the IMEI so I'm kind of worry
Thanks all. I'm now running CM10 stable and all seems to be well.

I actually used this method: http://www.androidrootz.com/2012/10/how-to-root-galaxy-s3-on-mac-osx.html. It worked fine and took about 20 seconds. I then used Goo Manager to install TWRP, and then I installed CM10 and Gapps. Whole process took literally about 10 minutes. Wasn't even aware of the IMEI issue prior to rooting. I will have to remember to backup my IMEI sometime today.
1. I stupidly selected "format /system" in CWM in preparation for flashing a new ROM.
2. Soft bricked my phone, put new ROM (slim bean 4.3beta) on SD card and flashed it successfully.
3. Everything works great, I still have CWM and slimbean is awesome but, I don't have root access. I don't know how to get it without reflashing everything (and at this point I don't know if that'll do anything)
Is there a simple way to permanently re-obtain root access? Thank you.
If it's a 4.3 ROM you'll need to flash chainfires newest su , don't have the link but you can find them throughout xda or Google search
Making the iPhone jealous one user at a time.
You can also go into settings development and enable root for apps and add on 4.3 the usually just add is enabled when first flashed on 4.3

I don't know why formatting system would soft brick? I always wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache and dalvik, then go into mounts and storage and format system, data, and cache, just to be sure of a super clean install and I have never had an issue??

I'm not totally sure about it either to be completely honest. It was confusing so I just put a new ROM on my exsd and went ahead that way.
Hi there, apologies if this is a silly question. I'm not an expert by any means, just a guy who follows the directions given on helpful sites like this.
I recently flashed the Slimkat ROM onto my n7100 for various reasons. But when I did, I obviously didn't completely wipe everything (which is what I intended).
Because for example, I installed a couple games on there and found that my game-saves were still there, also there were some bits on the obb folder from apps that I had on my phone previously but haven't installed since flashing the new ROM.
Why is this? Did I maybe miss a step when flashing the ROM? I know I did the 'wipe and restore factory settings' part in CWM, but I'm not 100% if I did the part with wiping the dalvik and cache etc.
Would that be the reason?
And If I want to give my phone a completely clean wipe what's the best way to do that now? Would I have to go through the steps as if I were flashing the ROM all over again? Or could I just go into recovery mode and wipe the dalvik, cache, system, data etc and reboot?
P.S. Yes, I know that no one who gives advice is responsible if I brick my phone.

Just a follow up - I did a wipe + factory reset, wiped cache partition, wiped davlik cache, and was surprised to find I still had leftovers on my phone. For example I had some episodes of a tv show in my downloads folder and also there was still app leftovers in the obb folder. Meh... I'll just delete stuff manually.

Well, you will have to flash stock recovery then. after that, wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache. This will erase everything on internal SD card. I assume u have backed up EFS and other important stuff.

By the way, I sort of overlooked the obvious - in the end I just did a factory wipe and reset from inside Slimkat i.e. not via recovery mode.
And that did the job fine. Cleaned up several gigs worth of clutter which apps like SD Maid seemed to have skipped over as well.
