S20 Ultra Fast charging/Super fast charging problem - Samsung Galaxy S20 / S20+ / S20 Ultra Questions &

Hi everyone,
Gonna expose my problem here maybe im just a little monkey who doesn't understand how fast charging/ super fast charging works for my Samsung s20 Ultra Exynos.
I've bought the phone 2 weeks ago, all worked well, in the begging I've remarked that fast charge is working with his 25w charger. After 5 days got like an update or something like that and since then the fast charging and super fast charging doesn't work anymore.
I've tried already : factory data reset, whipe cache, toggle untoggle fast charge/super fast charge setting, changing the charging bricks, changing cables. I always get that "Cable charging" notification and it takes like 2 hrs to charge from 20% to 100%.
Should I send it back into warranty ? Any explanations or maybe some advices to solve this problem ?
I'm excusing myself if I've posted this thread into the wrong section.

First, if you're phone is running fast, stable and fulfilling its mission, let it be!
Updates break Samsung's. Disable OTA updates.
Use known good charger/cable, buy another Samsung 25 w brick otherwise.
Fast charging will not engage if battery temp is too low or high at beginning of charge cycle.
Minimum temperature is 82F for reliable fast charging, 85-80F is better.
Screen must be off.
Try toggling fast charging on/off 3 times.
Try in safe mode.
Erratic charging is a sign of battery failure; is it's capacity still good?
Check rear cover for signs of bulging; any battery swelling is a Li failure, replace asap if so!

Tryed with 45w brick too, screen always off, did already the safe mode.. capacity is good .. Rear cover no signs of bulging .. guess it has some problems .. ill send it back ..

Temperature warm enough?
Meh, better safe than sorry...

See my ramblings here.but the bottom line - stay away from Samsung. Their battery issues started with S7 / Note 7 and we feeling the echos until now. But then again - if it's not a battery - it will be screen issues, if not screen then Wi-Fi ...

Fast charging tips and tricks

Here are some fast charging tips and tricks that actually work :
1- Turn on your airplane mode.
2- If you are waiting for any important calls or messages then ignore step one and simply turn off any unused feature like wifi and bluetooth.
3-Atleast once in a month charge your mobile from 20% to 100% this enchances battery life.
4- Atleast once in a week restart your mobile or switchoff the phone for 5 mins remove battery and reinstall and reboot.
5-The most effective is that buy a charger of a mobile like note 3 coz it charges faster than normal grand 2 charger(use at your own risk)
6- If you feel your mobile is getting hotter while charging turn off power saving mode if issue still remains turn off the phone.
Why use another charger? Using another charger than that specially designed for the phone may apply different voltage/current intensity to the battery, and thus affecting its efficiency...
You shouldn't be using another battery, every phone has its own battery charger, it's not a battery cell!!
I'm using a note 3 charger for my grand 2 for about 7 months and well it haven't affected my battery or phone and I bought it from a Samsung store and that person said it won't affect the battery but only charge it fast
"charge it fast" means going abnormal... Nothing's called charge fast and drain the same, if you charge your battery faster than it's intended to be, it'll cause trouble, most probably draining fast or the reactants of the battery wearing out fast, and 7 months are nothing lol!

Im using note 3 charger in almost a year too.. but i feel that charging with the same speed as original charger, and yes my phone still normal till now

Is it ok for battery life to only use wireless charging?

I'm a complete noob on wireless charging and this is the first time I have bought a device that has it. I bought the plain flat wireless charger for use with this Note 7 to have by my computer desk and now I'm thinking of getting one for where I place my phone every night to charge. My question to anyone who has had extensive use with wireless charging, is it ok to ONLY use wireless charging? Even overnight? Not sure if it matters but I turn my phone off to charge every night.
You should have no problems only using the wireless charger. The only difference is that wirelessly charging your phone will be slower then using the fast charging cable that came with the phone.
Side note, I've started turning off fast charging when i charge overnight. Don't need it to charge quicker at that point and figure it may give the battery some extra life after a while. I usually avoid charging overnight so it doesn't sit at 100% for hours.
Back on topic, I think wireless creates more heat...heat bad...do the math. Plus taking it on/off charger constantly is def no good.
Only wireless charge my s7 edge and doing the same with my note 7.
If the battery get very low and i need to use the phone ill put it on the cable.
But no damage will happen. The phone has built in safety and the charger does also.

Hi. I feel your frustration!
I did a little online research regarding battery life and charging and found a site that has real qualified experts with Ph.D's in this science.
Bottom line is all charging shortens battery life.
It appears to come down to a few rules.
Don't fully charge your battery. IE don't leave it on all night as we do.
Don't let your battery fully drain.
Don't use quick charging.
Don't use wireless charge.
Use the proprietary charger that comes with your mobile. (mine came with a quick charger though?).
Heat and built in obsolescence seem to be the problem. Its very complex and its best you Google this subject yourself as there are so many forum 'experts' one never knows what to believe.
Did you know that fast charging stops at 60% and then goes to trickle? If that's the case why cant we fast charge....its so confusing.
Research this yourself. Its best.

I am not certain we should worry so much about all this. At the end of the day we have to put a certain level of trust in the manufacturer of the phone, that they have put the effort in to making sure we don't damage or shorten the length of life to the device because of the technology they have introduced.
For the record, I 'slow-wireless' charge my devices overnight and top up on a fast charge cable whenever I need to. I never let it completely discharge and I don't recharge above 80% generally. No noticeable issues over the past 2yrs.
.
Thanks for all the reply guys. I wasn't really worried about the it being overnight since I know that these manufacturers let it get to 100% and the let it drain, then charge again so it's never fully saying at 100%. I just didn't know the long term effect of wireless charging. Looks like all charging effects it. Haha. I'll turn off quick charge and see if that helps anything. I work form home so I'm almost always by my charger. I guess i just shouldn't be as worried because no matter what the battery will get worse over time. I bet it's not really hard to pull the back off this phone either to replace it.

Hi, Cant disagree with what you write however......lol. Many years ago a doctor would prescribe medication and said medication came with no manufacturers information just the dosage and time that our doctor prescribed.
These days drug manufacturers have to give highly detailed literature with all medications. Here is my point at last.
If you read the blurb given, for say a pain killer, it may list pain as one of the side effects. I once purchased an over the counter sea sickness remedy for my son and in the blurb it gave NAUSEA as a side effect! Certain antidepressants can cause suicide! Now if we parallel this to company's who 'just' manufacture mobile phones imagine what they know that they DON'T inform us about? Just food for thought. :highfive:
Oh another point...how many owners actually read that massive manufacturers owners manual? Should the owners manual be read no end of situations and misfortunes would and could be understood and avoided.

sorry. the software and power managment in Android will not allow the battery to destroy itself or even degrade itself. it does not matter anymore how you charge them, for how long, etc. The only thing that can harm it is cheap cables that fail and cross wires externally, which then route voltage into the port.

I know the software will help it last longer and not do immediate damage, but you can most definitely degrade it quicker.

This sounds like BS. When Samsung investigated 90+ cases of exploding batteries, it found that 26 reported cases were fraudulent scams - this was in the news today.

This.
I would believe the below from the article before I'd believe Samsung's stupid enough to make the same or similar mistake twice. I was worried about QC on the replacements considering how fast they're racing down the production line. Mine's perfect BTW. Any articles about Samsung because of what's happened is guaranteed click-bait. A Note 2 overheating on a plane made front page news with whatever (still to be determined) happened to it being tied back to the Note7 issue.
"The issues being reported in South Korea are related to minor errors with the mass production of the new units."

Mine seems too also but I thought it was all in my head. It seems smoother and snappier for want of better words. My old phone would occasionally get choppy and stutter as if it was struggling with something in the background. The new one doesn't. It's on AT&T and the new phone's shipping s/w was the same as the old phone's updated s/w. Curious.
My s7 edge and note 7 (both exploding and non-exploding versions) have always had times where they charge slower than they discharge. (Waze + Pandora when it is super sunny, so 100% brightness. Even on QC2.0.)
The new note7 (and/or new firmware) pops up a warning to say as much. The S7E had an overheat warning that came up occasionally in similar conditions (even air-conditioned, DC summer is warm..)
I think the only difference is the notification that its happening, which is nicer than discovering after a drive that you have been losing power the whole time.
I'm experiencing the very slow charging issue. In fact when I was watching a movie while fast charging it was losing charge!?

I have experimented the same thing, actually ending with less batt while using and charging with other devices, so, this happening with the note 7 indicates nothing wrong with the batt
Customers in South Korea who received a replacement device have reportedly complained the phone's battery is overheating and drains too quickly after use, according to a report by YTN, a TV network in the country.

Fast charging does not seem to want to work on my new one, with stock charger brick and cable. I am hoping I don't have to go BACK to TMo and get another new phone.
my replacement seems identical to my original, same charge speed, same discharge speed.
as for the people saying about watching movies and such and the battery ending up lower, that is normal, if you are running the screen and charging not only does the battery get warm, so does the CPU so the phone will start to throttle the charging. I've had phones in the past that refused to charge once the CPU got above a certain temperature. this is just people being paranoid or looking for a way to get money as mentioned above with the fake tales of exploding batteries.

Odd. I use my Note7 (pre and post replacement) with Android Auto via USB. Android Auto really puts a load on the phone. Even off the wimpy output from my car's USB port the phone never loses charge and frequently gains it. My previous Note5 was the opposite. It would stay even most of the time but would lose charge on occasion. The only difference between the two scenarios is I got a Orange-E 12" Type C USB cable to use with my Note7. So my experience is different than yours.
I suspect the screen is the big drain. 100% brightness is vicious. Isn't the screen off for android auto?
Things it's usually doing when it drains (starting from 70% or so) :
Overheating (direct sun, no ac pointed at dash or top/doors off)
BT music streaming + wear
GPS
100% brightness
QC2 (aukey car charger)
Even without overheating that combo usually only gains me about 5% over 30 minutes.
Unrelated, but without getting too far off topic is AA worth the jump? (~900USD if I want my steering wheel controls and stuff)

Yep. When in use and the display is on its black with the Android Auto logo. But the phone's still using all its radios and if navigating pushing data to an 8" display so the phone's definitely under load. I have a Samsung Fast Charge car adapter but the problem with Android Auto is it doesn't let you connect by BT so the car's USB power output is all you get. But as a comparison under the exact same conditions the Note7 definitely either drains less or gets more power than my previous Note5 and both phones are/were configured identically.

A black screen with amoled means the only pixels lighting up are the ones in use. The screen itself is a massive drain so the more pixels are lit up, the more the juice is drained from the battery. That's why AOD doesn't kill the battery fast.

Ive used a USB multimeter on both my old and new note7.
No matter what, old or new note7, the charging rate gets cut exactly in half when charging with the screen on. This happens when using a quickcharger or a normal 2.4a 5v charger.
So if you want full speed charging the screen needs to be OFF.

On my replacement Note 7 I noticed that if you are doing allot with the phone, it still gets hot, the battery does take a little longer to charge with both the Samsung charger that came with the phone and an Anker IQ 2.0 / 3.0 charger. The phone does seem a little snappier/faster though.
I just want a removable battery to end all this bull * and I will pick the battery I want to power my phone.

I beg to differ, because they have that wireless backpac battery that is completely sealed from water for the Note 7. The purpose of the permanently installed battery is for the NSA to track people since the battery cannot be removed from the phone.

Redmi Note 8 Pro not charging at 100% after less than a month of use

Hi, I'm currently experiencing some problems with my Redmi Note 8 Pro.
I've had my phone for less than a month, and it's starting to get issues with the battery.
The battery, whether I charge it with the original wall charger, or I use a computer to charge it, or o use an alternative wall charger (that is for slow charge), it can't get to 100%.
It gets stuck at 99% and says, full charge in 2 minutes, even though the 2 minutes have passed long time ago.
I haven't done a full battery drain, and I always try to use a slow charge charger.
I also haven't done a full cycle without using the phone, maybe that's the problem.
But I'm worried, and I need some help, because I got the phone (as I said) less than a month ago, I haven't even payed the first installment.
I'm still within the seller's warranty, but I need some advices to what can I do, because returning the phone to the seller, to make a change, is gonna cost me 15 to 20 days. And I don't have any other phone to use.
Please, if someone can give me some advice, or tell me what to do, it's completely welcome.
Thanks.
And by the way, I'm using the Global 128Gb version, if that helps.
Edit 29/01/2020: I did a full discharge, because I couldn't read the quotes earlier, and I didn't realize how big the problem could be. Now, the phone can't go over 79%.
I didn't expected this issue with my RN8P, but with other phones (cheap noname ones).
A discharge to around 5%, and a full charge without unplugging did the trick for me.

When I cannot tell if its some HW related problem with your phone or battery but I am really wondering why you want to do full charges (and/or discharges)? It is known to wear battery way faster. Li-on or Li-po batteries do not have memory effects and it is known to be best to always keep them charge for example between 15-20% and 80-85% trying to never get bellow or above.
This phone has a pretty big battery, that normally should be enough to bring you through a day of normal use (if it does not you may want to check your hungry apps running in the bg) but maybe you are an heavy gamer or use your phone for some heavy usage stuff?
Even then, it would be best to do 2 quick 15 to 50-60% in about 30 mins with QC2 (18W original Wall charger) rather than one unique full charge.
Looking at what you said with slow charging you probably know all of that already, but the faster you charge the battery, even if same %, the faster it will discharge. As odd as it is, remains factual.
I dont know if you ever used an external amperemeter or similar to check what kind of current was actually going through your battery while charging, but if you do you will notice the first % goes way faster to charge than the last few %. The chip dealing with the battery charge, charges slower and slower toward the end because it could damage the battery, when on the opposite it is rather safe to quick charge the % in the middle.
Also you may want to check your alternative 'slow wall charger' to make sure it provides you with a steady voltage current (V). If it is fluctuating too much, it may damage your battery.
If you want to do further research about the subject, there is a note on the RN8PRO Telegram group explaining how to calibrate your battery by deleting some system files (root needed as far as I remember) and having some charges/discharges steps. Personally I have not done it because it requires to go to 100% and 0% a few times, and depleting a Li-ion/Li-po battery completely can damage it irreversibly. They are not meant to be discharged fully period. Now battery should not be completely drained when OS takes the phone off, that said we never know for sure since we cannot change that setting unlike on our windows laptops, but I dont want to take the risk.
When you are stuck to 99% it kind of looks to be the OS not being able to know if the battery is fully charged or not. In that state of things, have you tried to turn off the device without unplugging to see if the off-mode charging screen (the small battery screen with % when you turn your phone off) also remains at 99% or gets to 100% at some point? Because maybe all you need is to restart the phone to make OS aware the battery is fully charged. Could be a SW known/unknown issue/bug to be fixed with future updates for all I know.
But again, I don't think you should fully charge and/or discharge (if you do) your phone when you can avoid it.
Just my 2 cents.
Hope this helps,
Regards,

Hi Muad.Dib,
Well, I wanted to do that full charge a/o discharge because I thought it would help with the issue (turns out, it didn't, it got worse as you said) but I didn't know the effects of this before, I always thought it wouldn't have any effect. I wish I could have read your reply before doing it (I was busy and couldn't read it).
The battery lasts for more than a day (or it did before), and I always try to keep it clean from battery draining apps, and I don't play games that much on the phone, less than an hour per day.
Do you recommend me to do those 2 charges to 60% in my state? (phone can't get over 79% now).
I haven't ever used an amperemeter because I don't have one, and neither I do know how to use one of those.
If you can lend me a hand and give me the link to join the Telegram Group, it would very helpful ??. But I don't want to root the phone yet, cause the seller's warranty stills intact.
And yes, I have tried it and the off-mode charging screen keeps showing me 99% (or kept, because now it keeps at 79%). And I also tried few restarts and it didn't fixed it. :c
And I'm sorry, I wish I could've avoided it, but I read your reply too late.
Thanks for trying to help me anyways.
PS. I will try to do a factory reset to see if the MIUI update has something to do with the issue (because the seller told me to do it, and I will do it, though I don't think it could solve the issue). Please, if you have any advice before I do it, you could help me a lot. ( I'll do it something around 11:00 AM in GMT -03:00)

Hey.
Very strange what is happening to you it's probably the first time I read about something like this.
Please note I am no battery expert either.
From own experience and friends, usually when you wear a battery (or it worn by itself after use or bad storage condition before being sold) it still goes up to 100% but does not retain original design capacity anymore. The usual behavior is like for example you still have like 30% left, and suddenly it drops to like 5% and you only have a few seconds to plug it in the charger.
When that's happens it is time to change battery.
In your case I really have no idea what could prevent HW/SW to reach 100%.

I haven't ever used an amperemeter because I don't have one, and neither I do know how to use one of those.

Oh those are easy to use as I meant some kind of small USB device that you plug in between your charger and your phone. They are cheap and you get them for like 10 bucks on Amazon. Readings might not be 100% accurate but they still give a decent idea as they display Voltage, Amperage and accumulated capacity/used current for device plugged.

If you can lend me a hand and give me the link to join the Telegram Group, it would very helpful . But I don't want to root the phone yet, cause the seller's warranty stills intact.

As I said I am nothing like an expert or anything so I am unsure what I can do to help. However I did check the telegram group and I confirm you the battery calibration thing is a rooted thing.
To find that group it is pretty easy just search for Redmi Note 8 Pro OFFICIAL from telegram and join the group.
You find quite a few things there.

And yes, I have tried it and the off-mode charging screen keeps showing me 99% (or kept, because now it keeps at 79%). And I also tried few restarts and it didn't fixed it. :c

Normally nothing you could have done, could have damaged the battery this way. Depleting it completely could have shorten its life or damage its overall capacity, but by all means there is no way in just a month you could have damaged the battery to this point. So either the OS is not reading things right (what version of OS and phone do you have - which region is your rom?) or either sensors or battery have a problem.
Since you still are under warranty period I would definitely get it replaced. Maybe you got a faulty batch or something. This happens.

This definitely cannot hurt to try.
If that does not work return the phone.
Just to know, based on your flag I would assume you are in Chile but I may be wrong. If I am not mistaking it is summer there and probably is pretty hot. I wonder if 'too hot' could damage the battery.
Hope this helps.

Question Thermal throttling

After 2 days of trial and error, it's thermal throttling due to battery temp.
It hits 96.20f on the battery and goes from 2.8mah at 15w to 8-900mah at 6w
Full charge speed comes back as soon as it's under 94f
This is something I never dealt with with my OnePlus phones....
6000mah always, no issues 40 minutes to full..
With my testing, I've found that,
While charging
Power saving mode with CPU throttle, screen rate throttle, Bluetooth off doesn't help keep it from throttling...
Charging, I can play a YouTube video slid to the side off the screen and browse the internet and after a good 10 minutes or so it's bouncing in and out of fast charging
Playing a game while charging get me around 400mah charging lol
Takes 10 minutes for a single percent when gaming when it gets up in temps
I'm a business owner and a heavy user when I'm using it.
I atleast now understand how it works and what the limits are.
Brightness is half way and on auto.
I would be fine with it getting a bit warmer to keep the fast charging going for sure...
Now I set it in front of the AC if I need some quick charging lol
Slight edit.. it even throttles charging when closed and not being used...
You telling me this phone I paid almost 2 grand for throttles like a baby after a little light use? I noticed today that Enhanced processing has been removed and the option to change the screens resolution has also been removed. I swear my note 20 ultra still kicks this phones butt
It's give or take, it doesn't like charging,
I was playing genshin impact when it got warm and dead lol, but when charging it's straddling the throttle on and off if your using it for sure, download battery charging monitor pro and watch for yourself
She games well I love it, I'm sure I'll be able to manage it, but just coming from a one plus it's mehh
Samsung has limited the charging speed while its in use since their old models blasted some time ago left and right. That is the reason samsung no longer gives faster charging speeds like other brands. We are stuck with 25w charging plus slow charging while using the mobile
It only hits full speed when the screen is off

Incorrect, I can take a screen recording. If the batter stays below 96f it won't throttle.
Like I said my fix is to put the phone in front of my ac for a minute flat for like 15 minutes of play while charging at full speed.
It has nothing to do with the screen being awake.. it's all on the battery temp.
I tested it by putting my phone in front of the AC when warmed up and as soon as it drops below 94 it's back to full speed.
Yes it's Samsung, but they will learn someday when other phone companies start pushing into the US like OnePlus has

pushing a battery thats charging full power is asking for a fire to happen. This is EXACTLY why Samsung and other manufacturers put these safety measures into play. Users think they know better when they don't and create safety hazards. Like dude please learn basics about batteries before you start a fire.

For starters, I came from a one plus with 2x the charging speeds. What makes them so special to have it down?
And on top of that, I deal with lithium polymer batteries on a daily basis. Owning rc cars I've handled 100s of those "house burning down" batteries.
The phone doesn't even get warm.
I'm sorry your just used to following Samsung and what they say is the fastest standard for something lol
They gotta lack somewhere
I understood those limitations are for battery life. But you can be unhappy about it.
That's understandable and personally I don't care if the charging speed is not blazingly fast.
I remember my Note 7 well.
