4k Max - Won't recognize 256GB USB Drive - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I have a SanDisk 256GB Ultra USB 3.0 Flash Drive that I want to use with my 4kMax firestick. But the stick won't recognize the drive. I have the same SanDisk drive in 128GB that works just fine in the firestick but this 256GB won't. It's formatted in Fat32 so I have no idea what the problem is. I've read other folks using drives larger than 128GB just fine so I'm confused as to why I'm having issues.
Any help much appreciated. Thanks!

So... on a whim I plugged in a USB hub and the drive works now. I have no idea why a hub is necessary to make the drive work but it's working so I guess all good. Thanks!

If it worked on a powered USB HUB, it's maybe a power issue!?
The sticks power supply is a bit weak.

[Q] Supported USB - OTG External Hard Drive Between 500GB - 4TB

I want to buy a external hard drive to use with my SXS with the USB OTG cable that I purchased, I know there is a power drain error if you just connect it directly to your phone, I need one that is USB powered as I have TONS of 720P & 1080P movies and music on my desktop computer that I want to watch/listen to on my phone that are between 4GB - 12GB/5MB - 12MB.
So I wanted to know what External Hard Drives between 500GB - 4TB that you are us [ing] or [ed] or can recommend that do not require AC/DC Chargers that you connect to the wall, I have a USB Y Splitter Cable and a portable USB charger so I can power it when I'm on the go.
Thanks in Advance, look forward to you recommendations

I'm interested in this as well, unfortunately I can only advise what doesn't work.
I have a 1TB WD MyPassport which I use with a powered USB hub, the XS sees it but won't mount - If I erase the drive the XS will see it and tries to format but then locks up before completing.
Frustratingly it works fine in my Asus TF300T.
I also have a 120GB SSD which I haven't quite worked out what to do with so I bought a cheap USB caddy, the XS works fine with this but the TF300T can't mount it argh!!

I haven't checked need to try

I'm sorry if this sounds like a completely nooby and stupid question, but would connecting an external hard drive actually work? Even if you sorted out the power issues, would the phone actually recognise it, and be able to use anything on it? It's not like a mini-SD card, and I've never heard of this being done before.....

Could not work out how to get it to "just work" but after installing [root] NTFS Mounter I managed to get a flash drive working, my 750GB WD Passport USB3 however not, I can see the powering it but my guess is not enough, the lights flashing but unlike the flash drive its not mounting.
As for Kernels. I am using the Note 4.0.3 with stock samsung kernel so my guess is it can work on any phone however power may be a problem.

I only got my cable yesterday, before ordering it I did some reading and also heard that a special kernel will be needed for the NTFS support, but after getting the cable I figured worth a search on the play store before going that route as the last few times I tried custom kernels it was dismal experience and with the emmc bug I would rather not be going for a factory reset as ICS is not yet official in my country.
Getting my older 320GB USB2 drive back in about an hour so will test and see if that yields any better results.
Forgot to come back, tested with my 320GB, even used the pc and a powered usb hub for extra power on the y cable with no luck, even combined the power is insufficient.
Don't see any way of getting an 2.5" drive working on the OTG cable.

Dont have one to try with, but I could hear on the spin of the 2.5" that power was at least a problem, may not be the only one, but my ability to test has ended. However I see no reason y it would read an ntfs flash drive and not a hard drive, well with the exception of the 3TB maybe, being so new and all.

I do have a powered HDD (only a 180gb) but I'm wary of rooting my phone this early into the contract for little reason.... If I pluck up the courage to do so I'll test it out, but I'm assuming the link previously posted is the only way of connecting the two? If there's one that doesn't require root I'll test if for you within the hour, but otherwise I'm not going to rush it

dude which phone du u have??
OTG is an inbuilt function on phones which are supported.
root is only required to increase power output which is not needed in external powered HDD
P.s. I have a 1TB seagate but my phone is sola(no otg support) but it may be ported in the near future so am here to check

The app that does the auto mount and enables ntfs support (if needed) requires root.
Personally have no idea how to manually mount.

Recently got a powered usb hub for my Raspberry Pi, thought I would give that a test.
Connected the 2.5" HDD to the powered hub and then connected the hub directly into the phone. Hard drive works perfectly, even copied some files over to it with no problems.
Power is ultimately the downfall here with the OTG, cannot get enough via the cable, wonder what the battery tax would be if you could get enough power over it.

Quite probably wont work, the power end of an OTG cable combined with the phone was still not enough, the power end is meant as booster, it provides at most half of what is needed, the phone at least mine, was not capable of supplying the other half.
You would in most cases need the usb hub to completely power the drive in order to use it on the phone.

OK with 1TB, but ...
I have got a 1TB transcend 2.5" external HDD. the cable has two usb connector, one for data and one for power. whenever I connect the HDD to my galaxy note, it doesn't show anything, just the LED on the drive turns on. but when I connect the power connector to my laptop, it works and device shows my HDD without any problem. so I think the problem here is the power.

USB OTG
Hey guy's
I was just looking for a solution but could not find one.
Now i tried the "Pargon NTFS&HSF" and it works without any problem.
Find "Pargon NTFS&HSF" in Playstore.
Just install and open app then connect the HDD ( i have a LaCie 500GB 2,5) and voila.
Note: if you disconnect the hdd please unmount first or will damage your're hdd resulting in reformatting.
Tested on :
Phone : Sony Xperia, Samsung S2 & S3, Nexus's and gooapples V5's.
Tablet: Sony, Toshiba, Samsung, Nexus(+google), Asus, Poloroid and Ramos W30.

Can't seem to use external hard drive on my Tab 3

Having trouble accessing external hard drive. I have a USB thumbdrive, formatted to FAT32, and the tab will not even detect it. I tried a external hard drive, it has its own power adapter, formatted to fat32, still can't see it. The USB and External Hard Drive works fine on my S3 and my Note 3. Is this a hardware limitation?

AFAIK yes, the ground pin is left out, so no hardware support plus kernel support is missing in standard ROMs as well. See this thread as well. Someone said you can build a special USB OTG cable with own power support, but I haven't tried for myself.
My S3 and 3 8.0 both detect my 16gb thumb drive using the Samsung dongle.
I will probably get a 32gb thumb drive today, and also test it.

Biggest Flash drive?

I have the Samsung galaxy tab s 10.5 and I would like to know if a 256g flash drive will work? I watch movies and TV shows on the go, 64g is not enough (the Simpsons season 1 - 25 needs about 100g) I don't have a computer anymore just my tablet. I bought the seagate wireless plus 1tb and I couldn't get it to work, don't want to order a 256g flash drive and have same trouble. Any help would be great
Sorry no I am not rooted and due to the fact that I use my Samsung allshare cast hub daily and root items can't use the hub
Anyone?
Don't you mean SD card.? Some people say the highest you can go is 64 or 128gb
128 GB is the highest you can go

He probably means OTG cable with a hard drive. Simple drives tend to work the larger drives need more power to work via USB.

There is an available of cable that's a "y".....one leg is the USB and the other is another female micro USB for your charging cable. Can't remember where on ebay I got mine but it does work for my external hard drives with my GS5
128gb sd card is not big enough so I thought k would try a 256gb OTG flash drive. Has anyone tested?

This question left me extremely curious, so I have just purchased an OTG cable which will arrive in a few days. I will test out a few different EXT HDD sizes and post what the maximum my OTG will allow.
I do however forsee an increase in the discharge of the battery for larger storage devices, but we shall see.
Can't wait to see what u find
I'm gonna buy a sandisk ultra 64gb microUSB otg and I was looking for a bigger one but this must be the biggest one they have, can't wait to test it out. What I'll do is if my shows or movies won't fit I'm gonna have to erase the ones I've seen then try to make them fit. I suggest you get a 128gb micro SD card plus a big sized flash drive then you should be okay.
Sent from my SM-T805
So I bought an OTG cable off ebay, and it arrived. I didn't change the format of any of my external drives as I don't have the space to store anything currently anywhere else. The tablet registers there is a drive connected however it can't mount the storage device due to an unknown format. The externals I tried were 2 portables (1x 500Gb usb2.0 and 1x 1Tb usb 3.0) and 2 desktops (1x 1.5Tb and 1x 1Tb both usb 2.0). Over the next few days I will attempt to reformat the 500 Gb and 1Tb portables, and the 1Tb desktop and see if that produces any results. Due to work constraints this may take a few days, so thank you for patience. Results will be posted as soon as possible. Current format of all the externals is default NTFS.
Another Option
There's another option in which would require multiple devices unfortunately due to the limited storage. Its a product I currently use myself called "Toshiba Duo 2 in 1.
http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/...flash-drive-toduo64grd?searchTerm=Toshina Duo
Unfortunately I am still working on my other drives. There's is a lot of moving data around (limited to USB 2.0 speeds), so please keep posted on my other externals.

MicroSd Problem

Hi, i bought this Xiaomi TipeC Adaptor
and this MicroSd Reader, to combine them toghether with my OP3.
But they just don't work toghether.
Separately, everything is fine, Xiaomi Adaptor charge my phone, MicroSd are working fine with other adaptors or with Pc, the reader either is working fine with Pc or others smarphones.
Did i miss something?
Thanks
still one test to do, connecting one OP3 on a PC with that adapter and see if you can transfer some file with MTP.
Did you turn on OTG in the OP3 settings? If you did, try it with a different OTG device and report back

Yes man, i did, Otg it is on and it is working with a TypeC MicroSd Reader. Recognized instantly, can move files. Same MicroSd.
So, every single piece is working fine alone or in combo, just not working this combination, with XiaomiAdapter (TypeC to Micro Usb and MicroUsb MicroSd Reader) but i can't get why.
Maybe the Xiaomi adapter doesn't pass enought electricity to power the MicroUsb MicroSd Reader.
But I don't know how to "overvolt" the Otg Adapter in order to make it work.
Not sure why this occurs but I've had the same exact issue trying to use micro USB OTG adapters with a USB-A flash drive.
USB OTG just doesn't work unless you use a USB-C OTG adapter. Same thing happens in the Nexus 6P

It's the power requirements of those adapters. Powered USB hub should work. Same reason my stock work dell kb works but not my Logitech g910. But with a powered hub it works fine.
Okay, that's what I was leaning towards. Older devices having higher power requirements. Any knowledge or recommendations of portable powered usb hubs?

However the Msata Drive works on a Galaxy S7 and My PC just fine. Thoughts?
