Question Stuttering Scrolling In Some Apps? - Google Pixel 6 Pro

Anyone noticed this? Telegram and Twitter for eg, the scrolling is pretty stuttery, it's like the CPU touch boost isn't working on them?

Not sure what you would call stuttering.
It is known that Telegram and Twitter have some optimizations issues with the new 120Hz panel, they revert back to 60hz (you can easily notice this when activating le "show refresh rate" in developer options). That should be easy to fix with a small software update. Even though (you might have noticed) it only effects Telegram when you are INSIDE a group/chat, if you scroll through the "list" of groups you are in, it uses 120hz.
Or do you really mean "stuttery" like playing a game with 15 FPS and you think you are inside lag-hausen?

Is this an A12 thing? The scrolling on my [email protected] for eg is a heck of a lot smoother in Twitter than on the P6P. Edit: Twitter is running at 120hz, so it can't be that.

We don't know at this point, since no other phones has A12 released yet. It might be A12 related, it might be P6 related. What is clear however, is that this should be easy to fix.

I have noticed this on P5 and a little less on this device. Android 11+12. I don't get why this happens on modern devices.

Weird. Like I said, it doesn't happen on my s21U. It's obviously a software thing but i wonder what.

Did you copy your phones apps over from another device? Have you tried reinstalling your specific app? Maybe it's a glitch or bug that is caused by this. It's usually a wise idea to do a delete cache/data once you encounter problems with a certain app.

It happens on Twitter and Reddit apps for me also. It was mentioned on Verge review too.

Man, it's happening in more than a few apps for me. Scrolling down a page in Chrome will stutter! (And that's a system app — I can't try uninstalling and reinstalling it.) Yes, clearly a software issue, but it's not trivial. Hope they fix this; the phone is otherwise stellar.

It is not related with Software I guess because it works fluidly SD 888 from last year. I took a video about it Here is the link.
Both have android 12 and both have the same settings on Twitter app.

Lots of stutter in Chrome and the Google app for me. It's really annoying.

yep, I had this going on in my PayPal App, the display will flicker around almost violently, and I was typing so you wait a sec, it settles down type some more, etc. I made a decent feedback report on my end, with a great screen recording capture of the "seizure-like" display issue, LIVE! es

This used to happen to me from upgrading my phone too many times without doing a full wipe first (which I then started doing on the android flash site). Nowadays, I always do a full wipe with each update and I haven't experienced that stuttering since I began doing so.
It just stinks always having to setup your phone from scratch every month if you continuously update like I do lol.

I thought the same thing at first - as with my previous phones that had TWRP, this was never a problem. But honestly, I only just started believing in what I mentioned this past week. By February, I hadn't wiped me phone since I had gotten it in December and was experiencing the problems that you described. I thought it was a bad phone, however, after COMPLETELY wiping, then reflashing and setting everything up again the problem was resolved.
But just this week I updated my phone to the June Beta 2 / GPR3 Beta 2 (Build: S3B1.220318.003) and decided not to wipe it clean...and now I'm experiencing the annoying stuttering/temporary freeze issues yet again.
Granted, it's a beta... But I'm not too sure it would have these issues - the same issues that had occurred in the past when I wasn't doing full wipes on my phone when updating. So I suppose I'll have to wipe my phone and start over on QPR3B2 and report back with the results. I'll probably do this within the next few days.

Delayed Notifications In Android P

First off, I disabled adaptive battery in Android P. Ever since the upgrade from 8 to 9, I noticed that notifications are right around 5 minutes late. I have a couple time-sensitive apps that I need notifications right away. Gmail and another app for my home automation. In Android 8, the were flawless. However, ever since going to 9, not so much.
I also noticed that when I delete messages in the gmail app for gmail and an IMAP email server I have it does nothing with the messages on the server. I login to webmail from a computer and the messages are still in the Inbox.
Anyone have any ideas? I am going to try a wipe again to see if it resolves the issues, but I am out of ideas. I had the above issues in Android 9 beta as well. I would downgrade and it fixed them.
I have the same thing and it turns out it is a common issue with Pie. I have not found a solution yet. I have read all kinds of things people have tried and nothing seems to help. Sorry that I can't be more positive. Hopefully Google will figure something out and fix in an update.
Here is a two page post I started about the issue but there are also many others online describing the same thing:
https://forums.androidcentral.com/android-pie/904647-notifications-delayed-stopped.html
My thought is that the delayed notifications are due to Android Pies implementation of adaptive battery. Maybe try excluding the apps you want to receive notifications from in a timely manner?

You don't happen to have data saver in the quick tiles turned on by accident do you? That does prevent notifications from getting pushed. Both my parents had this on and a bunch of notifications came through after turning it off. I made sure to remove it from even being an available option.

been fighting with this issue as well, but it only seems to be gmail, and a couple other apps, my sms notifications seem to come through fine, at least as far as I can tell. I've turned off adaptive battery etc, nothing seems to make a difference. sometimes i can turn my screen on and all the notifications will come flooding in, other times they come through 10ish min later.
yes i have also these issue
and i opened thread on these https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-2-xl/help/gmail-sync-problems-pie-t3839357
also i tried many apps, but instead of gmail but yet i didn't find any solution

Made sure it was off early on. No change.
The best way to describe my issue is that once the screen times out and has been off for at least about 5 minutes, notification sounds are delayed. It is sort of like the phone goes into a deeper sleep or something and then the problem arises. As soon as I use my fingerprint to wake the phone, all notifications blast through.
The delay can vary. Sometimes it is only 15 minutes or so, but often it is much longer. It is almost like once in a while an app wants to call home or something and to do so wakes up the phone just enough to allow some notifications through.
There also seem to be some issues with individual apps and notifications that may be fixed when a developer updates their app for Pie. For example, most apps notify immediately when the screen is on or within that first 5 minutes or so after the screen goes off. But since installing Pie, Kuna always has a delay of 5 to 10 minutes before notifying. Kuna does this 100% of the time. In fact if I have the phone awake, looking at the screen when walking out the front door, when the motion sensor is triggered, immediately there is a notification icon. But the sound notification is always delayed. This seems like an issue with Kuna and they are well know for being very slow with updates and fixes but eventually they do fix things. But the notification sound delays described in this thread do indeed seem like a system issue with Pie. Hopefully enough people will have the issue that Google will figure it out and fix.
I am having same issues after updating to Android P. At first, notifications came late about 5 min, but then they started to vary some coming in 15-30 minutes later. Can't figure out what is causing the time difference but either way I can't find a fix. I spoke with Google support and they had no fix as well.

Nope, they didn't mention anything about existing issues or being aware of the issue.
Any one found any solutions or fixes? I feel like my notifications are becoming even more delayed now and have also realized I'm not getting a lot of various notifications at all (through many different apps).
I am guessing you all are aware of this, and have tried, however I just found this recently and thought I would share for anyone that doesn't know.... Settings > Apps and Notifications > Advanced > Special App Access ..... Lots of options here with one of them being battery optimization for individual apps. After I upgraded to P, hardly any of my frequently used apps were given full battery use. Haven't played with all the other options there, however just granting apps full battery seemed to help me out.

One of the first things I tried was giving full useage, (no battery optimization) for all apps that I want notifications from. Did not help. Many other apps are still being optimized. I thought I had previously found a way to turn off all battery optimization but because I do have many apps in that list that are being optimized, I obviously did not. Right now I can't find a global setting to turn off battery optimization even though I thought I did before?
So I noticed this morning, that the main app/notification that's super delayed (5-10min after the event should have triggered) it doesn't happen when my phone is plugged in or i have the screen on in my hand. Even after going through all the battery save features and making sure this app is exempt from them, it still happens if the screen is off, or my phone is off the charger. super annoying. wish there was a fix for this already!

Verizon sent me a replacement because of this problem. I was apprehensive, but got a very nice re-furb. Still have the same problem, but I got a phone that is indicated as Verizon on the LG site. In developer mode, the bootloader unlock button works. I guess everything isn't bad. I sure hope Google straightens this out soon.

This happens only with Gmail on my phone - WhatsApp and Messages send instant notifications. Messages isn't optimized, the other apps are.
I can live with that, no big deal. Perhaps disabling battery optimization for Gmail would fix this, though.
Interesting note: I was talking to YouMail support today about something else but I asked about an issue where I get an email and transcript of a new voicemail but when I go to the YouMail app that voicemail is not shown until I drag down from the top of the screen to refresh the list. Support told me they are aware of this but can not do anything because it is a problem with the "latest Android version causing delay". So it is becoming a more widely known issue and hopefully Google will fix soon.
Thanks for all the feedback. Speaking of delay, I think I have tried just about every fix here and then some and still no luck. Wiping the phone did nothing as well. At this point, I would almost like to revert back to v8 to get this fixed.
I tried this supposed fix, (reply #51). https://forums.androidcentral.com/a...ifications-delayed-stopped-3.html#post6355714
No idea if it worked for me as when you restart the phone you need to do it again and less than 30 minutes after I went through the steps, my Pixel2 got the October update for Pie and required a restart!

Question Gmail syncing / notifications problem

I have a problem with Gmail not syncing properly.
From time to time, it will stop notifying me of new emails.
When going in the app, the mails will come in, without the need to swipe down to refresh.
It has been a couple of days like this now...
Pretty annoying.
And to state the obvious...
Yes, I have enabled syncing.
And YES battery optimization for Gmail is disabled...
Not even the intelligent thingy.
Anybody had the same?
Any ideas?
Have read al lot of topics about it, but no clear solutions...
To my knowledge, Gmail has been having these issues for at least a few weeks now, it's not only you.

Via adb?
Don't want to do that every reboot...
No changes are needed, it is working off and on for people randomly. It stopped working for me for 4 days, then 2 days ago was fine again.
I've done manual syncing for a long time.
Sick of unreliable busy things running around in the background.
For the last couple months I've kept Google play Services* disabled unless I sync Gmail, I rarely use Gmaps or Playstore so I don't care.
My stock Note 10+'s battery usage is down to >7% an hour SOT using the Brave browser constantly. That means not only less charging but less strain on the battery out of the gate. I don't consider Google to be a trusted vendor so limiting it's access is a good thing.
*keeps Find my Device from autostarting it's bloody self as well.
I've had this issue with Android for quite some time now. With my S21 Ultra, all I had to do was disable doze with adb commands and never restart my phone. It was so nice getting email notifications at the same time as my iPhone.
I thought I could do the same with the OP9 Pro, but this isn't the case. I too have turned optimisation off, turned doze off, and keep the app open in the background - to no avail.
It's so sad to receive a notification on my iPhone that is fairly important to my business, only to get it anywhere between 10 minutes to several hours later on what is supposed to be my business cell. I'm unfortunately outside of the return window with the phone, otherwise this frustration would've lead me to another iPhone.
So insanely frustrating. I don't think I'll be carrying an Android phone much longer if this persists and the iPhone 13 is as good as I'm hoping it is.
I removed universal gms magisk module and somehow it worked again

The beautiful thing about Android is there's almost always a 3rd party work around.
You're not locked in.
Glitches aren't uncommon, but most are small ones. Finding work arounds is a part of Android ownership... use it's flexibility to your advantage.

Question Gboard intermittent freeze

Does anyone else have this issue where you are swiping and it will suddenly freeze and you have to wait for it to unfreeze, maybe Gboard needs updating for Android 12

Not specifically Gboard, but quite literally only just today I've been getting some little lags on my Pixel 6 Pro and experience the same freeze on SwiftKey.
Running Kirisakura and all has been well with no new apps installed recently, but indeed today been getting some weird brief lags....
Unsure what the cause could be, but thought I'd share my experience nonetheless
I had a ton of Android 12 issues that were tangentially related to Gboard: minimize arrow persisting even when the keyboard wasn't visible, mysterious System UI ANRs after using the keyboard, etc. At some point I had opted in to the Gboard beta and opting out to the production release build fixed all of my issues.
Yes. Sporadically
I've been having intermittent issues with both Gboard and Swiftkey. There's been a few times when the keyboard doesn't display when I'm trying to message or send an email. I have to restart the phone. A bit of a pain in the butt. BTW, I have not received the December update.

Trying the beta version now to see if that fixes it
I do also encounter some lag when typing. Already contacted google support about it. You can either wipe your phone, if the problem isn't gone you are able to send it in for warranty.
I assume it is a software problem, so I won't do anything for now.
But glad to see there are more people who have the same problem.

As you worked out seems pointless wiping the phone when its most likely a software issue, the Gboard beta is so far ok for me
I've switched from beta to stable
I do also encounter lagging when browsing in chrome or switching between recent apps. Not a huge deal breaker, but it should be fixed

Oh I'm glad this is being recognised! As whilst I don't use Gboard (SwiftKey instead) I have the lags, which aren't just typing but also when scrolling and so this lag explanation of occurring when the battery percent drops makes sense as it is very much intermittent.
Will hope to see a fix soon.
This is getting worse for me, was out typing before when it just locked and then after a few seconds a load of gibberish came out
I wonder if this is the cause of some entire screen lock-ups for some of us until we turn the screen off and back on?

If it is the Accessibility Services issue plaguing others, it's pretty crazy how extreme the issue is for some. Vs the small delays/hithces that I've read, the majority are suffering. Hopefully Google fixes this soon as I don't want to play device lottery with a refurb.

I just had it happen once on a fresh install of the Jan build when I was scrolling through Discord. Haven't updated the apps yet so that could of been why. I also ran the Pixel repair tool and I'll see if it happens again. It is pretty annoying when it happens and having to stop what you're doing to turn the screen off and on again. Don't really want to deal with Google during a time where their support is non-existent and end up getting a scratched up, dinged up refurb replacement. That or get a replacement and the same crap happens.

Question What the hell is wrong with this phone, Random stuttering and fps drop

The software in 6 pro is buggy as hell, Now I'm getting random refresh rate drop in everything, Gmail, Play store google now all apps, Just whenever it feels like it.
Nothings changed app wise but now randomly when I wake the phone or just scrolling around it's stuttering like it's at 30hz not 60hz, Even with forced 120hz in dev settings it still does it makes 0 difference.
And do not disturb mode wow do not disturb means do not disturb not waking my screen at every notification while I'm asleep, I've tried custom options here as well nothing works there either, It's either no notifications at all on lock screen or status and no screen wake or everything together.
Honestly this is the worst phone I've had for bugs, I'm on November so they have already done 1 update.

Honestly this is the worst phone I've had for bugs, I'm on November so they have already done 1 update.

I had to flash proton aosp ROM so I can have a smooth experience, and my god the apps open like lightning, no lags or jitters

I'm seriously getting fed up with it, If this January update doesn't drop before my return window it's going back, The worst Pixel experience I have encountered to date with Android 12 it's still beta imo, Shoddy, So many software issues disgusting from Google to be honest.

I may try that at some point, I mean what's the purpose of having forced highest refresh rate in dev settings when it does jack **** not to mention it shouldn't do this full stop, This is my third 120hz phone and by far the worst in terms of smoothness and refresh rate all over the damn place.

If defo does not run at 120 all the time even forced, something's making it drop, I made a post like yours before, lots of others having the same issue. I'm not sure on what to do, I don't really want to have to run custom ROMs tbh, yeah if Jan's update doesn't fix it then I can't possibly stay with this device

To be clear, it's likely not Android 12 itself that seems like it's still in beta, it's Android 12 on the Tensor CPU. After all, no previous Pixel phones running Android 12 beta would be able to test how it ran on Tensor.
I will say that Google should've done more internal testing of Android 12 on Tensor before the release of the P6P, since they couldn't possibly receive feedback from the public about it.

Try it before your window. Unlock the bootloader, flash stock ProtonAOSP 12.2 and play around. Safetynet passes right out of the box and everything save one or 2 things work. Plus tweaks. Then if you don't like it Android Flash Tool back to stock and send 'er home. Stock Android 12 on this device is simply awful all the way around.
Easily the worst performance on a 120hz phone I've used this year. Google for whatever reason seem to be really struggling getting this thing to work as it should. I really don't want to root because I just haven't got the time anymore to be doing all that stuff and I really shouldn't have to but in its current state the phone is so disappointing.

I'm on Dec update and the jitter and smoothness has improved but it's still not like other flagships around today. I'm praying the Jan update fixes a lot of it.
After a while of using proton it still has a little bit of jitterness about it, not sure what's causing it

Yeah I agree it could be Android 12 itself but then Google should have tested more and not releasing just for the sake of it, I mean look at OP they had to pull the 12 update, I am getting constant refresh rate drops now when I unlock my phone and start scrolling in apps even after restarting the phone it is ok until I lock the screen and then unlock and bang 30hz it looks like, Terrible just terrible.

I may do cheers but as one other posted it is still jittering in proton but I am not sure whether that is the same refresh rate drop, I cannot believe this wasn't picked up in testing it is basically rendering my phone useless at scrolling because of the massive refresh drop at the min, I wouldn't mind it was all good for a couple of days and I haven't changed anything just started doing it on it's own as many others have reported.
Simple they released the phone with rushed out Android 12

It is definitely curious why so many folks are having so many problems and then there are those like me who don't have any issues. Maybe it was a quality control issue where not all components were closely enough alike.
Internal testing lmao. No way Google did. They had to of had prototypes of these phones, no? Preorder day was a disaster and next year it will be exactly the same. It's been a trainwreck from the start for many of us but not all with this phone. Imagine the average user, not an xda user, who have so many issues. Think they'll buy another Google phone? Nope
Those having refresh rate problems better make sure it's not a installed app. I used an app called Kinscreen and it forced 60hz. I read others here saying they had the same issue with other apps.
It's definitely not component parts because I just flashed the updated November update from Google web installer and it's smooth again, btw the November firmware has all the December fixes as I haven't come across any of the old November bugs, some little we jitters here and there but no where near as bad as I had on the December build, revert back to November and then wait on Jan build

I don't think that's conclusive that it isn't (or is) component parts. All it confirms is we don't know what the root cause of the difference in experience is. I never had any problems on October, November, or my current December update.
I've had random drops in frames when scrolling web pages on chrome and other areas of the phone, and you can easily see how it'll jitter a bit. Idk what causes it but I don't think I've seen it recently.
One bug that drives me nuts, is if I go into the messages app and open a conversation, the keyboard will not be on screen but the app thinks it is, so I'll have this giant open space where the keyboard is supposed to be. I have to swipe right to "lower the keyboard" then tap inside the text box to bring it up again.
I'll be installing proton tonight and see if I notice a difference with anything, as I'm always thankful for custom roms that do a better job than stock.

Question Display failing

Keep getting constant purple lines going across my display, even after wipes and after updates, I honestly think it's about to fail.
Never dropped, not once, no water near it all all.
Ouch. Photos?

Even if you did drop it, if there is no obvious damage to the screen I bet you can RMA.

Getting that on apps like YouTube - especially when watching videos in portrait mode and scrolling through the comments?
It's not a hardware fault - it's a software fault.

use the Android Flash Tool and install the latest update. If it still happens after that, contact Google Support. Tell them you used their Flashed Tool and they should send you an Advanced Replacement because you've verified it's a valid warranty issue (they won't require you to send it in for "repairs" after using the flash tool)
if it is a software issue, the flash tool will fix it 100% (if its not some persistent bug)

With all due respect, how would flashing the same, presumably flawed, software update fix anything?
I think the occurence happens due to a the variable refresh rate - heck, the issue may well be tied to the app itself rather than the android software.
Videos run at 24 or 60 fps and the screen adapts to that. Browsing through the comments section changes the refresh rate to 120 hertz. The issue may well be linked to the disparity in refresh rates (and handling hereof) as the purple lines are only present a couple second after touching the display (and thus as the screen ramps up to 120 hz)

So you're getting purple lines across your display just like op's issue, and no one has replied with a similar issue (nor have I seen this specific issue appear on reddit or on this sub that was actually a software issue) - and you don't want to try a factory reset/re-flash to try and resolve it? I mean that's fine. I feel if most of the users on xda had this issue, they would want to look at trying to fix it - especially because it doesn't look like a common issue. Again, nobody can know every issue and how to resolve it so having insightful community dialogue is what xda is all about.
From what I've seen over the past 13 years using Smart Phones, purple lines while playing video is usually a hardware issue - but it's extremely hard to tell without photos and videos of the problem. The issue where the screen would flash quickly during changes in refresh rates was fixed in the January update. Also, I take it that when you force a high refresh rate (or turn off smooth display) it doesn't occur.
You replied with a comment that had a question mark and then followed up with a statement. I think most of us on here are just trying to help, but it's all good. Hopefully your issue gets fixed in an upcoming update (whatever your issue maybe, since again, it's really hard to gauge without a video of the issue). It's my fault for jumping to conclusions and in hindsight I should have replied asking for a video of what you were experiencing. But it's all good. No worries.

Just because you haven't seen it, does not mean it does not exist. In fact there has been a thread about this before. That's why anecdotal evidence is a poor measure
I appreciate your contribution and who knows, it might just work. You're right about purple lines often being a hardware failure, but the purple lines are in many cases (though not always) reproducable, consistent and for me and the few others who have posted about it (again, poor evidence) tied to one app.
I don't see the issue with following my question up with a statement. The statement - or a further explanation as it truly is - serves the purpose of describing the issue to greater detail.
I appreciate your time and your utmost respectful way of responding.
Here's the link containing a video showing the issue.

interesting. now we're getting somewhere - I actually replied in the comments on that post because I also had the blue flashing lines appear once (or twice). I then used the flash tool to flash (or cli with the download image) the December update (before they pulled it) and enabled the options wipe and flash all partitions (or again not sure if I manually reflashed with cli, with the all partitions command). restored my device through Google Backup and haven't seen the issue since.
If I were to guess, looking at that video again - I would guess it's an issue with the Display Firmware Profile (so hardware firmware that either a future update and/or reflashing android should/hopefully resolve it ((leaning towards the latter since it might have fixed my issue, but again its hard to tell because I flashed a new build, December, and wiped)). But it's a wild guess. The lines for me weren't purple but more light blue that had tiny imperfections in the lines, like an old tv monitor or something (similar to that video).
This post reminded of other devices who have those pink or purple lines striped down the screen which most often that not, is usually a deeper issue closer to the hardware side where a repair is usually necessary. But it's been almost 2 months since I had that issue and I haven't looked at any updates on that thread since (I don't think anyhow).
