Google, I hope you're reading/listening to this:
It kind of irritates me that I bought this phone for the "Pure Google Experience" only to find out its not really that "True" experience with all these different regional builds.
People are on 4.0.2 for over a month now I believe, yet we Canadian users, as well as many others across the world are still on 4.0.1 and have been duped into believing the "Galaxy Nexus" is a true Google device. Well, it is, but it isn't at the same time. My yakjuux build from what I hear is updated from Samsung, not by you, and that irritates me.
Sure, I can flip over to yakju myself, but really, why should I have to do that??a
I mean is it so hard for Google to do, what the likes of Microsoft has been doing for many, many years? That is make one build, let's call it base yakju, then through the initial install process, ask the user what region/carrier/language/radio he/she has and have the unit download the "region packs" accordingly??
The dreaded Microsoft doesn't sell 15 different "regional versions" of Windows, its the exact same build, but with language packs that are set up after the initial install process.
That way everyone gets an update at the same time, in this case, by you Google not by Samsung, as it is believed is happening with my phone (although unconfirmed because we haven't received an update yet!)
Anyway, there are many that will say you can do it yourself, and while this is true, one shouldn't have to. Nor should we have to wait for updates as a regional build when the "original" yakju builds get updated quickly.
I'm coming from a Galaxy S, and I stated I will never buy a carrier build phone again because of fragmented updates across the world, of which Canada never seemed to get one... I said I'm going pure android. That is why I bought the Nexus.
Unfortunately, its starting to feel like the exact same experience.
Sorry if this bothers someone. That was not my intention.
Why not just flash yakju? You don't even need to unlock the bootloader (or so I've heard).

Its a matter of principle for some people.
And you have to unlock your bootloader. You can relock it after of course.

Agreed on all points! Google, sadly, is becoming a an organization that lacks focus in its endeavors.
I also come from a galaxy s and i have a yakju, international gsm, carrier free.
When i first heard that vodafone pt would have galaxy nexus carrier locked for sale, i thought right away that that couldnt be a good thing, so i went and ordered a sim free international version even more certain that what i needed was the one where no carrier touched, only Google. That worked out fine. There was no yakju variants known at the time, october or early november last year.
The move about dropping support on cdma devices was not so good, but thats on the carrier and lte fw.
Edit: re read op, and it seems he has a carrier unlocked phone.
If you wanted to escape regional builds, you should ask yourself why they exist. Different basebands for example, you probably are aware of this since you're from Canada.
I dont care about otas and etas, as long as source is available. Thats why i bought it in the first place.
Yes I can't believe why Google is allowing this. The nexus doesn't seem like a nexus now- it's just a phone that is unlockable.
It is the same case for me in Hong Kong. I finally decided not to flash yakju but to start using ROMs the second week I bought the phone.
Google needs to change this policy. They aren't going to let the nexus get more and more out of hand and less Google! As we Hongkongers like to say, give us back the "Google son"!

How could there be no regional builds when people in the world don't even speak the same language?
Sorry for my sarcasm, but you get the idea. We have different networks, systems, AC power plugs... the list goes on and on. Just look at what 'X' means in different countries.
But I agree that they can do a lot more to make it easier.
Google has always held the belief that the Nexus line is for developers. It is for the most part a stock platform for which a developer can test their products on. However, Samsung and the carriers have mass marketed the phone as a consumer phone. It really is not and the Nexus brand has changed forever.

But then you are looking at the fact that they then have to supply smaller retailers with the handset, which also means they would have a lower scope of user adoption, as well as the cost of additional advertising.
By pleasing selected network providers, it ensure that the handset is in the hands of not just enthusiasts, but also the general user. The handset will have a higher adoption rate due to the higher availability, as well as the network providers will be more proactive in advertising the phone, overall this not only increases profits, but saves money by relying on the front end to advertise to attract users.
Business is business at the end of the day.

I'm just happy that we have access to the latest ICS versions (through ROMs and AOSP). If I have to flash them instead of getting OTAs, then so be it. I can live with that.
I am 100% sure we are much better off than those still stuck on Gingerbread, Froyo, Eclair and even Donut. We and the Nexus S crew are still the first to get our hands on ICS, which we've been able to enjoy over the past 4 months whilst everyone else has to wait patiently. We'll also have first dibs on Jellybean too
Is it ideal that we already have version fragmentation on ICS? Not really, but considering the baseline version recommended for mass use hasn't seemed to have surfaced yet, I wouldn't really consider that a problem. Once that's out in the wild, I would expect most people will get OTA'd to the latest version and all will be well.
Regional builds MAY get it slower due to Samsung handling the OTAs, however I think they only did this to offload some of the pressure of single-handedly applying a global update. Even though my Nexus was shipped as yakju, I do hope Sammy pulls their finger out and updates the regional builds as fast as Google will.

i can only hope and pray that verizon has it working...i'm not holding my breath though, figure it will be sometime in may before we hear anything from big red

Since when has VZW given a **** about _ANY_ of their phones after a period of 2 months of launch? Seriously 95% of the time their advice is Full Reset, Exchange the handset for a same-model refurb, or buy a new shiny handset. They aren't their to support any of these devices, they are there to make money shoveling as many devices in as many brackets as possible. This is why they have these periods of exclusivity for launches. Which is why the Galaxy Nexus got delayed for about 1-2 months on VZW versus _ALL OTHER LAUNCH NETWORKS WORLDWIDE_.
I don't expect VZW to ever put out an update to r800x. We are stuck on 2.3.3, which breaks the compatability for any purchased PS games bought on the market. On top of that, they don't support purchases that are made through their crappy software store (VZWapps) and often charge premium prices for apps that are free on Market. They hijacked the normal Xperia Launcher to only work with VZWapps, and blocked out the functionality of numerous other things (unless you root and modify numerous things).
VZW doesn't care anything but about making money off of you. If any of them are telling you otherwise, it is just PR speak that they are told to say.
(Yes I'm a cynical, bitter person, but I still like VZW better than AT&T)

Also, I rooted my phone and deleted all the Vcast apps, rebooted and now the android market shows up in the games laumcher instead of the Vcast.... hate vcast

Couldn't they just finish that up and release a compatible *.ftf file for those interested? Instead of just tossing out all that work?
You all do realize that it is still only February, right? Android 4.0 release date was slated for a "POSSIBLE" release sometime in March or April. How about waiting until the end of April and seeing how that goes for the other models of the Play before you start complaining. In fact, in view of Verizon's slowness to adopt new updates, I wouldn't lose hope until the end of 2012.
If you have the luxury of an unlocked bootloader, I suggest using CM7.2 from FreeXperia. They are currently working on porting 4.0 to the R800 family, and it's going well from what I've heard.

We are talking about Verizon here. They don't approve anything until it's perfect. Don't see why they couldn't release a beta, and then do updates.
Verizon... and perfect releases? Dude, what have you been smokin'? I've had 4 Androids, a Blackberry and I can't even remember how many "feature phones"... and none of them could EVER qualify as perfect, no matter how many updates they released. The Play has been the closest, and it's not perfect by any means.

I've been with Verizon since 2007 & they haven't supported any phone beyond release. They've pissed me off thoroughly with the lack of releases for the Samsung Fascinate (gone due to piss poor performance) & the R800x. I hate this whole dodgy BS that seems to keep perpetuating beyond the normal. Next phone I get will probably be a flagship phone, since I know that it will get huge support from the dev community. This is completely insane & I'm getting pissed off with the general lack of community support (with a few exceptions but not many like the GSM models) for the R800x since VZW has abandoned us as well.

Remember that the biggest reason that this phone didn't sell well was the lack of support in the first place. That means that there are fewer of our phones in use than a lot of others, and we have few dev's because of that.
I like Android more than iphone but at least with iPhone you usually know some of the fixes that are in the works.
I don't know if a radio fix is coming with the next OTA update
I don't knonw when (if) I'll see an update for the Verizon Galaxy Nexus - I'm pretty sure I will but who is to say 100% other than Verizon or Android - tons of rumors like the 4.04 update and the 4.05 update etc but nothing concrete.
I suppose I'm kind of *****in but I'm also pretty sure they could make ALL of their clients happier if they released SOME info. E.g. a radio fix is in the works... or we'll have 4.04 for Verizon customers within 2 months - anything is better than nothing even if they don't' go into tremendous specfics.
Just my opinion of course.

That would be fantastic. Even if it said this month - update coming in June - that would be better than me hoping I might find a rumor that might seem credible. Then I'd know where to get genuine news relating to my device on MY carrier.
I am a looong time nexus user and I dont wish this anymore because I know it wont happend. Google works this way.
The only more or less "sure" thing is that when they say that it will be released in a couple of week is because it is already deployed in most employees devices for a long test and it will in fact be released in 2-3 weeks.
Google works this way because they don't have a ETA for when things are complete.
That's like saying telling CyanogenMod that you want more communication between them and the users so that they can post a timeline on when RC1/RC2 will be complete etc.
Things are just done when they're done.

Because...when something goes wrong, and they do not make their timeline, people would throw a fit, even more than they do now.
As others have mentioned, expecting any sort of ETA is completely unreasonable.
But honestly, this whole upgrade experience has been pretty underwhelming for two reasons: lack of communication and very slow speed. The volume bug -- a completely show-stopping bug -- took two weeks for a fix. I highly doubt it would take Apple that long to issue a software fix for such a serious bug. Sorry to bring Apple into the discussion, but it's true.
Not to mention that it's taken Google FIVE months to get NFC to be fully functional...
At the end of the day, having relatively quick updates of stock Android will probably keep me with Nexus devices, but an advertised and guaranteed monthly status update? That would be a killer USP. The silence between 4.0.2 and 4.0.4 was absolutely terrible.

Yes it sounds great, but it would just make things worse.
People would be exponentially more angry if they gave progress reports and they didn't go where people wanted. They'd complain even more because they'd know it wasn't fixing the way they wanted it to be fixed. And as soon as they promise a timetable and are unable to deliver, all hell would break loose. Either that, or they give a timetable too far in the future to keep from hurting themselves, and people complain the timetable is too far out.
Google and Verizon aren't just sitting on their asses doing nothing. They're working. Its downright insulting saying that Google isn't working hard on these updates. Just be patient ffs.

Agreed. Also with Google (or the manufacturer doing updates) it has to be approved by the carrier UNLESS you're using the GSM model of Galaxy Nexus which is independent of any carrier.
This is from a news article I read yesterday,
“HTC has delivered a ROM to us however it is still having issues the reason that other sensation types have the update without issue and ours did not come out that way is because every ROM must be adapted to the hardware of the device because we use a different radio than other providers and also have applications such as wifi calling it also has to be compatible with those. What the HTC rep told you is most likely correct because once a ROM is delivered we have 2 weeks to test it and then approve it or send it back they then have 4 weeks to fix the bugs and return it back to us, where we are exactly in that process I do not know but that is how a ROM is delivered to the customer.
The original ROM was not delivered to us in November, we started testing it just recently but I think it has been longer than 2 weeks so at this point HTC most likely has the ball.
You bought a phone and it has been announced that you are getting ICS you have every right to know what’s going on with it and when you can see these awesome features. I did go into a lot of detail about how a ROM gets to the end user (you guys) but that wasn’t to point fingers only so you would have a better understanding of why you don’t have it yet, the bottom line is the Sensation has T-Mobile’s and HTC’s name all over it and both companies want to make you proud to be a Sensation owner so we are working as fast as we can to deliver it but also want to make sure that it stands up to your expectations.”

tl;dr it says that, the ROM that HTC made didn't meet T-Mobile's expectations and has to be fixed by HTC... then sent to T-Mobile to test the ROM equalizing MORE delay
I know OP has Verizon, but that's kind of your fault for using Verizon. We all know how it is when it comes to Verizon and keeping a tight control over their phones. I personally don't consider Galaxy Nexus (LTE) to be a "Nexus" device. It comes bloated with VZW apps, Verizon has to approve the update by Google, Factory images are no longer uploaded, etc.
Kind of off-topic but I'd love to see the idea of Google buying T-Mobile USA from Deutsche Telekom (owners of T-Mobile USA) then we would never have to worry about carriers trying to keep a tight grip on their phones. Not to mention then tight integration between Google services such as Google Voice would be tightly integrated between the carrier and Google services. Just a dream of mines.

I'm gonna guess the OTA will come with the white 16 gig version on April 5th, and that the white Gnexs will come with 4.0.5 loaded. Just a hunch. The rumors have been early April, so on Thursday or that weekend is my guess.
Well, I don't know about everyone else, but my "fake" Nexus has had 4.0.4 for a long time now. I've seen 2 updates since I bought my Nexus (fairly early after release). Not EVERY update comes via OTA. The Nexus line has ALWAYS been like this. At any rate, my 3 month old "fake and unsupported" Nexus has already seen more updates than my Vibrant ever did.
As far as GSM users complaining over updates, shut up. Your phones didn't need the updates that Google implemented for the CDMA version. I don't want fixes for a phone that isn't mine. I don't want Google releasing something that isn't ready. Radio issues are up to Samsung and the carrier, not Google. Stop whining about Google. Stop thinking Google is the hold up. Google isn't the hold up. Samsung is the hold up. If you have a CDMA version, blame Samsung and Verizon. If you're GSM, place the blame where it largely belongs, on Samsung.
For some reason 80% of people on this forum seem to think that Nexus means that you get an update every month or something like that. Like we should be on 4.1.7 by now or something like that. It's the most insanely retarded community I think I've ever seen in my life.
As a member of the choir and a Verizon customer for12 years

Keep preaching.

Yea, everyone knows true Nexus devices only come with half the storage space and only on less desirable carriers.

Verizon is a less-desirable carrier for me. Just sayin'.

I like Android more than iphone but at least with iPhone you usually know some of the fixes that are in the works.

and since when do you know about iphone updates before release? Apple is the most secretive tech company ever. They only comment on issues when they get really out of hand and media goes all over it (like the recent address book privacy issues or the better known antennagate).
iOS does have private betas though, which is kinda the equivalent of aosp for android in terms of release schedules. aosp 4.0.4 >>> 8 months >>> oem 4.0.4 updates
I have seen articles where two people got the update. Some threads show people have it...My phone says i'm up to date. Can I get the official word?
These are reasons Apple is better than Android. They release an update and within a week 80+% of devices in the wild have taken the update. My two year contracts be up on Droid's before I get updated. Really sucks. Not sure why Google can't get the power over the carriers like Apple has.

Let's not start the Apple vs Android thing here but know that Verizon controls it, not Google (nor does Apple control Google..).
I duno if Verizon released the update officially but if they did, it should show on their website. Also, it's usually waves so one guy might get the update and you will the next day.

I'm starting it just sucks is all. Not comparing devices. Makes no sense I'm asking for the latest OS on a device that will be replaced by a newer model in a couple months. You blame Verizon, so I ask how is it that Apple is able to get OS' pushed to their devices the day they release to the public, but Google has a year plus fight to get a release pushed down. Hell, they released 5.1 and I bet less than 50% of their devices in the wild have 5.0

Ok, you do realize that Android is on a crazy amount of different device from different company? The OS needs to be update/adapted to every single variant there is = Takes time! Apple has to deal with their products only, which is much easier. So yeah, therefore pushing updates faster across all Iphones.
Now I do agree with you that it sucks to wait for updates longer than others but you phone is working right, isn't it? And it won't become bad cause a new model was released. Afaik, that new model will be running the same version of android as your device when it gets updated (which should be quite soon if it's not up already).
If you really want instant updates, grab a Nexus, which is Google's line. You'd get the updates just as fast as Iphones get theirs. Oh and it never takes a year for Google to release updates? Unless it's on a very very old device.

Makes sense...I buy new phones as soon as they come out, so the G3s days are numbered, so is my N4.
I just heard from Samsung Care the new "expected date" is March for the official update. WTF, I have a carrier unlocked (SM-G960U1) phone, but have to wait until every device in the world is updated, including the US minor carriers, before mine. This is the firmware all the US carriers are adding their bloat, too. It already exists. Can anyone explain this insanity?

In the US, unlocked phones represent 12% of the market so I imagine the carriers get the most attention.

I agree, but we are still going to get the version they gave to the carriers a month ago. So they could have made that 12% happy. Instead they choose to make that 12% annoyed. But hey, we keep buying so it must not annoy us too much.

LOL, it seems that as far as cell phones go, people have very short memories. Honestly, I doubt that 75% or more of users even care what version of Android is installed on their phone. Hell, they probably don't even know.

More like 90. Blissfully nonchalant. Otherwise selling phones with locked bootloder would have caused uprest and carrier preferences would have been swashed off by sung quickly
I THINK the idea is that unlocked phones must work on all carriers so the update for unlocked phones can't be done until all the carriers have released their update.
I got the update today. So far, so good. Nothing to write home about good or bad.
All 7 gotta do is plug it in to your computer and run SmartSwitch and it will update it to Pie
