I know this is a noob question, but what are the main advantages of rooting my phone? and what kinds of things can i do with a rooted phone?
I just upgraded to Gingerbread using the RUU , and i was thinking about using Gingerbreak

With root (+ENG & Radio S-OFF) you can do ALL (ROMs, Radio's, Kernels, RILs, Updates, Improve everything) that.
Without Root you can't do any of it.

WITH superuser permissions you can do a lot of things:
1-use apk´s that you can´t use without root access
2-flash roms
3-do s & eng - off for flash new basebands
4-flash new kernels and do overclock or underclock (for example,set up the speed of the processor)
5-change your screensplash, your boot animation, power off animation...
resumed: you have access to IMPROVE your device
you can do more things that i do not write...sure
Basically Root allows you to access all the underlying files, as administrator, on your phone, so what you can achieve is limited only by your skill not the software. IMHO the biggest reason for root is the ability to carry out a proper backup, after that the choice is yours.

Thanks, i needed to make sure it was what i thought it was.
After i run Gingerbreak i get the message
"not sure what happened here. Either the exploit failed or the reboot failed. Please reboot manually and see if you have SuperUser!"
Any suggestions?

I ran it again before i saw you post that, and it just worked straight from 2.3.
But now i've got 5 superuser icons, any suggestions how to fix that?

Maybe a daft answer but it's true: It's a bit of a dirty hack and will often leave all manner of strangeness floating about. Once you get around to wiping everything and putting the ROM you want on (a reboot will probably solve it) then all will be well.
Whilst you're going through the process expect more of this.
Best guess for your particular example is just the retries without rebooting.

Have to say I disagree about putting a sticky for that.
1. The site tries to limit the number of stickies.
2. Where would it go?
3. Who would look?
4. Who would find it?
5. The question has been asked and answered SOOOOO many times already that it would be easier to find one of those (search results are date ordered) than to find the sticky (trust me, I just tried).
(I've not asked the questions for answers by the way, I know the answers. Just there as a point.)

If I knew the url to the sticky, I'd post that as a reply early in the thread. The sticky could contain a moderated list of advantages/disadvantages to rooting a device.

Yes, you will void the warranty by rooting your phone and being bricked is something if you does not follow the procedures correctly.

It won't hurt anything to try it. It is an overflow routine that would apply to many devices, so I would say give it a try, the worst thing that could happen is that it just doesn't work.

O.k., not bad, it looks like the rest, which for me is good, but am still working on it.
Have you looked into CVE-2014-5207? Looks like something that could hold promise from my very limited experience, and should not be patched in our kernel.

Maybe something interesting... doesn't appear to get root access, but uid 1000 system access which could be exploited. Just throwing that out there.

I tried the srs root it said at the end that it was successful yet it wasn't and I don't really know any of details of writing these exploits which achieve root for our devises but I would think that that may be a place to start

It was said on the other thread that you can Odin back to NI1 from the OTA. How do we know this, exactly? (I'm buying the phone in seven days, and if it's updated, that being true would be helpful.)

You can but you still don't have root. You need to install the binary. Try to run expose. Or even supersu will tell you you don't have root. You can install any apk you want, but if the app wants to read/write to system it can't. SuperSU is just an app to manage what can access administrative privileges. Its not root.

Only Verizon and AT&T models have locked bootloaders. If you don't have one of these you should be fine.
Why root wifi only device?
I have rooted a couple of devices. I get it's purpose of unlocking hotspot, modifying cpu clock, adblocking, etc. I have the Tab S 10.5 and I am trying to find the benefit to rooting this device. Looks simple enough. But What will I gain? I think I have already answered my question though, maybe. I am rooting my note 3 so I can use that for a hotspot for this. But it seems the only real benefit is adblocking? Am I missing something. It has been a while since I have done this so maybe I have...

The way to look at is that rooting gives YOU control over your device not the manufacturer. Think of it as like administration rights on a PC.
Would you like it if pc manufacturers told you what you could and couldn't install on your pc?
Rooting allows you to install custom recoveries so you can back up your device, fix problems, try new custom or stock software, install root only apps such as titanium backup. You can modify system files and add back functionality that the manufacturer has decided to remove or disable. Add new functionality, maybe something that is found on another device. Speed up your device by overclocking to make it run smoother.
Change how things look and install apps such as xposed which reveals a ton of hidden features allowing you to customize your device to your liking.
Once you realise what root can do you'll never want a another device that isn't.

Hi, I have downloaded the file for the T800. However, when I unzip it there are only two files :cache.img & recovery.img. Am I missing something? Please excuse my ignorance, newbie!!

Sorry, I read that bit,downloaded odin as well, however, I recall reading something somewhere about needing a .tar file? Maybe some full instructions would be nice for us new to rooting a device. Thanks for the reply

The tar file is the file you have downloaded.
Just leave it as it is and flash with Odin.
I shouldn't have to provide step by step instructions, this is what XDA search and Google is for. This info is everywhere.
Basically:
Install Samsung usb drivers.
Disable Samsung kies if installed.
Boot your device into download mode - Hold POWER + VOL DOWN + HOME.
Run ODIN , connect USB cable, look for 'added' message.
Load the tar file into the AP slot, click START.
Wait for flash to complete, device will reboot and root.
Enjoy your rooted device with custom recovery.

Cannot complete root on T-800 (Lollipop 5.0.2)
I've tried rooting twice on my T-800 running 5.0.2. In both cases ODIN says passed. However, I do not see either supersu or TWRP. When I ran root validator I got the following:
Root Unavailable
su/id/echo did not execute
I had installed the supersu app manually, but even that says the binaries are not installed.
However, Knox says it has been tripped. (using Knox Status app). So looks like I have the worst of both worlds here (well, other than bricking). Is there anything I can do different? Thanks,

Did you see the red android after rebooting?
Supersu should have already been installed before booting into twrp.

I have an apology to make. Your troubles seemed to have been due to the SuperSu script not running because it had become corrupt. I realised something was wrong when you said you had to install SuperSu with TWRP.
All fixed now.

Hello XDA community,
I recently traded in my old iPhone for this new LG G4, and am so glad to be converted from iOS to Android! Anyways, one of the main reasons I switched is because root access would enable me to maximize the potential of my phone. The only problem is...I have looked vastly throughout XDA and other Android developer havens for root guides and have gotten so confused as to where to start. Can somebody direct me to the right place, or even better, guide me through the process?

It seems daunting but the first things you can do prior to the flashing are
-Get the software you need installed and tested
-Learn how to put your phone into download mode
-test to make sure your phone can communicate with your computer the way it should
-Download all the files you need (stock kdz and matching rooted image version)
Take the time to read each step, and if you have any questions, ask before you proceed, not after you have completed the step.

I will definitely look into that thread! Quick question, what exactly is flashing? I know it has to do with modifying the operating system..but I honestly do not understand the purpose and benefit. Could you explain that to me?
Flashing is basically copying OS onto your phone and installing it.

Yes. With this method, you are basically putting a portion of the OS on that is already rooted. That is why it is important to make sure you have the correct versions.

I followed all of the steps provided in the link you shared, and believe that my device is now rooted! At least, I think and hope. How can I be sure? And if it was successful, what should I do next to make use of my root access?

You should see the SuperSU app. Open it, it may/should prompt you to update.

I have been trying very hard to grasp on this myself, and not post a thread like this but I'm afraid my head is spinning and I'm hoping someone here will be kind enough to help me.
I have owned an M8S for a while and would like to gain root access (mainly so I can use link2sd and expand storage space). I followed many links and threads carefully, but I am nervous to begin any process as the instructions are... vague, I guess. There are many of you who disagree with me I'm sure, but please be patient with me.

I have rooted several android devices before, and I've never been very confused by the process, but this one has left me lost.

I don't have the M8S, but the process looks straightforward (similar to M8, as well as most fairly recent HTC devices):
1) Unlock bootloader via HTCDev.com (go to the website, and its pretty self-explantory)
2) Use fastboot to flash TWRP custom recovery
3) Flash SuperSU and Busybox using TWRP
I'd also add a step before 3 above, use TWRP to make a backup of the stock ROM. Once you have that backed up, anything that happens from step 3 is reversible by restoring the backup.
In fact, everything in the process is totally reversible by RUU, with the exception that the bootloader flag will only every say RELOCKED instead of LOCKED.
Is there a particular question, or step you have a problem with.

Just read and learn as much as you can before doing anything. Don't do anything that isn't form a current, reputable source. Do those things, and you will be fine.
portachking, I am very new to rooting and all that follows it. I would be very grateful if you post back your experiences when you have time, with the challenges you met (if any) and how you solved them...
I read from this page that "When the phone is rooted in changes to the phone are reset on restart". Is this the case for you as well?

2nd Link in the top post describes it (with link to SuperSU).
To root, just flash SuperSU 2.67 in TWRP.

It didnt work.
I did everything exactly as described. I have twrp, open it in fastboot with cmd. When i am in twrp, i clicked install, and installed the supersu beta zip and busybox zip. Still i dont have root access.

I tried it multiple times, from my internal storage and sd card. I have bootloader unlocked, i use fastboot boot twrp version 2.8.6.0 if i remember correctly (not at home at the moment) and clicked install. Then i made sure i install the zip super su and busybox file from the root of the sd card, and tried internal storage as well. From that screen, it seems it installs correctly, but when i reboot and use a rootchecker app, it says im not rooted.
Can someone please help me? Ive read up on lots of posts and watched youtube vids of twrp rooting to see if i did it correctly.

Please confirm what version SuperSU you used.
When flashing SuperSU, it should have given you the option of "systemless root" or "traditional root" (or something along those lines).
If you picked systemless root, it probably won't show up on root checker apps. Seeing as Link2SD is your main reason for root, have you checked that the app works or not?
