I know this is a noob question, but what are the main advantages of rooting my phone? and what kinds of things can i do with a rooted phone?
I just upgraded to Gingerbread using the RUU , and i was thinking about using Gingerbreak
You see the development thread?
With root (+ENG & Radio S-OFF) you can do ALL (ROMs, Radio's, Kernels, RILs, Updates, Improve everything) that.
Without Root you can't do any of it.

WITH superuser permissions you can do a lot of things:
1-use apk´s that you can´t use without root access
2-flash roms
3-do s & eng - off for flash new basebands
4-flash new kernels and do overclock or underclock (for example, set up the speed of the processor)
5-change your screensplash, your boot animation, power off animation...
resumed: you have access to IMPROVE your device
you can do more things that i do not write...sure
Basically Root allows you to access all the underlying files, as administrator, on your phone, so what you can achieve is limited only by your skill not the software. IMHO the biggest reason for root is the ability to carry out a proper backup, after that the choice is yours.

Thanks, i needed to make sure it was what i thought it was.
After i run Gingerbreak i get the message
"not sure what happened here. Either the exploit failed or the reboot failed. Please reboot manually and see if you have SuperUser!"
Any suggestions?

Maybe a daft answer but it's true: It's a bit of a dirty hack and will often leave all manner of strangeness floating about. Once you get around to wiping everything and putting the ROM you want on (a reboot will probably solve it) then all will be well.
Whilst you're going through the process expect more of this.
Best guess for your particular example is just the retries without rebooting.

Have to say I disagree about putting a sticky for that.
1. The site tries to limit the number of stickies.
2. Where would it go?
3. Who would look?
4. Who would find it?
5. The question has been asked and answered SOOOOO many times already that it would be easier to find one of those (search results are date ordered) than to find the sticky (trust me, I just tried).
(I've not asked the questions for answers by the way, I know the answers. Just there as a point.)

If I knew the url to the sticky, I'd post that as a reply early in the thread. The sticky could contain a moderated list of advantages/disadvantages to rooting a device.

Guess its again a n00b question, does rooting will brick the phone or void warranty...
Yes, you will void the warranty by rooting your phone and being bricked is something if you does not follow the procedures correctly.

I am having so many problems trying to root. Im going crazy.
Quick info - I'm running 1.47.651.1 and have hoot .79, not .76
I've read all the threads here, and over at the androidforums, in regards to rooting. I've tried the ota simpleroot method, toasts method, etc. I've followed step for step w/ YouTube videos, etc. NO LUCK.
Currently I've just got a basic root, with unrEVOked3, with the clockwork mod. I only.used unrEvOked for a partial root, because every method has failed me so far. I'm a wreck! I've done one nandroid backup, after installing unrEvOked. I know that I need NAND support unlocked in order to flash custom roms, such as cm6. This is what I am trying to accomplish now. As ive said, I've tried several methods, and have done all the reading my brain can handle. All my drivers are up to date, including my adb drivers. I've got the Android sdk installed as well.
Simpleroot seems to work up until step #4, but then after rebooting, & going into the hboot screen - where it should load the pc36img file, & I should see the blue progress bar along the right side. Unfortunately, this never happens. Instead, it says the image cant be found, & displays that in green text, then just takes me back to the hboot menu. Yes, I am in charge mode. Yes, usb debugging is on. -- what's this I read about being in HTC sync mode? Is that crucial for performing step 4? i havent read this anywhere else, so im just curious. Trying to explain my situation/scenario as best I can, bc I'm really frustrated trying to root my new evo. I do have the HTC sync installed, FYI.
I know unrEvOked worked successfully, & I've at least got a partial root, since i can wifi tether no problem. I just need too unlock the nand. I end up going in circles reading the forum posts related to my issue, as they all say use simpleroot ota to gain nand access, or part 2 of toasts method. I've tried, trust me. I wouldn't be posting here if I wasn't rly stuck.
Please, someone help! I would be forever grateful if you can get me full root and gain nand access.
Everyone else is doing it, i just want to join in!
Thanks.
If there's any other information I can provide, i would be more than happy to assist. I've seen others with my same problem as well, but haven't found a solid fix yet. So thanks again on behalf of them as well!

Stop being a rent-a-mod.
Have you installed .net framework 4.0, htc sync, and disabled virus scanners on the machine you are using?
There were no error messages you overlooked on step 3 of simpleroot?
Does step 4 bring you to recovery by itself or does it sit there hanging and you manually do it yourself?
Use this method it only requires ADB and the 2nd part of Toast
Utilize the thread mentioned below. I am a new user for posting and can't do links yet but it has method in which you utilize shell commands via adb.

Thanks for your honest help. Sorry this isn't in the q&a like the above user suggested. This seemed to be the place where I would receive the most help.
Yes, I've got framework 4.0 installed, and HTC sync. All virus protection is disabled.
There were no error messages on any of the steps. I've followed it multiple times, very carefully. Even step for step with YouTube videos.
Step 4 does not bring me to recovery. Sometimes it reboots, then reboot again into hboot, but doesn't load the pc36img as it should. Just brings me back to the menu. Other times on step 4, it will reboot, but then won't reboot again into the hboot.
Hope I've answered your question.

+1 I came into development on Saturday and there were 8-10 questions/comments at one point. I mean really with the attitudes of people what's the point of having a Q&A section... really? And to top that there seems to be this underlying assumption that if you post a question in dev that you'll get more(?), better(?) help. *shrug* Honestly, people can call me rent-a-mod, or that annoying guy who jumps on people if they post a question in Dev, I don't really care.... I get annoyed when I specifically come to a subforum (Dev in this case) expecting to see a particular subject and instead I find myself double checking to make sure I haven't clicked Q&A by mistake.

I can understand it being annoying, I am in no way saying it is acceptable. I am simply referring to the attitude people have taken toward the noobs of xda. It is not necessary.
Your statement quoted above is bull****. 9/10 threads in this section ALWAYS contain things like [ROM], [KERNAL], [METHOD], [HOW-TO], [PROGRAM] OR [TUTORIAL].
Honestly, you are trying to say that you come into this section after knowingly clicking on it, get confused as to where you are and it upsets you so much that you have to be a **** and tarnish the reputation of these forums to new users?

Next time I will take a screenshot since Toast moved all of the threads now. And, NO, I knew I was in dev, I was being sarcastic and trying to make a point.
Also, I used no profanity in any of my posts, although I was direct, and simply stated what I felt. I do not feel that any of my posts degrade or tarnish anyones name. Truth be told my very first post in XDA was in dev asking a question, and someone posted "wrong forum" or whatever.... and it was a learning moment. I didn't feel degraded or tarnished. I guess these days there are a lot of sensitive people on XDA. read: everyone should mind their p's and q's. *shrug*

Hey,
I'm pretty new here but I used Simpleroot for my first root as well. Sounds like if it is not loading the PC36IMG file it's either named incorrectly or it's not on the SD card. Can you verify that you have a file PC36IMG.zip in the root of your SD card?

Yes, I've got the pc36img.zip on my SD card, and it is named correctly. I've even tried formatting my card.

Have you contributed anything to the G2 root effort? Some of the best Android hackers are working to root this phone; in fact many of the same ones who came up with the method you posted in your first post.

Not trying to be rude, but present some facts. Try it out. Show us the code. Explain your findings. And present your idea in a clean, intelligent, organized manner. That means capital letters. That means punctuation. That means use the space bar.
I agree with, I'd say, ~90% of the other users here. All the useless crap in this forum is doing absolutely nothing towards getting actual development accomplished.

Haha good luck. People keep posting about what should be done yet have no idea what actually goes on to do any of this stuff. It isn't as simple as "making" it, you have to know HOW to make it. Please go to the think tank thread.
thinktank thread is good but the WIKI is even better. I just wish it was updated more often -- but anyway this thing has everything short of #g2root irc

READ THIS REALLY F*CKING CAREFULLY --- it is great reading. If you have ideas after reading it (i said read it dont glance it dont masturbate on it just read it as if it was your last will and testament) and then speak up.
Look not to rain on ur parade buddy but in order to do that on the mts you first had to install the enginering img to the phone that allows unsigned packages. Now since we have a copy of the eng img for the g2 (we as in the devs not me) and the phone will not let you downgrade to it so therefore the mts way of loading a custom recovery won't work. I traded in my mts to get my g2.

As for OP, post this in the thinktank thread. Why did you bother making your own thread? You only had an idea, which is what the other thread is for. If you had tried it out and had success, then it may be a different story.

Hello everyone
I am looking for some guidance as I have a stock DHD 2.3 (freshly updated) If there's someone who can tell me the steps and eventually the links because I don't know the order of the rooting process nor where to find the tools I shall hit the thanks button madly and hope I won't end with a big digital brick..
also any recommended ROMS?
thanks in advance
Well, you need to downgrade first DOWNGRADE LINK.
Then after radio S-OFF (you dont have to, but it'll be much better) you can install ROM Manager and flash CWM recovery.
The CWM recovery will allow you to flash new Custom ROMs to your device.
You can then go back up to 2.3, or do whatever you want really.
I can't suggest any ROM to you, because everyone has their own taste in ROMs. I flashed a Stock-ROOTED 2.3 ROM and modified it to my liking using many different MODs out there.
But the android development section contains many different ROMs.
EDIT: CWM recovery will add many advantages to your phone. One big advantage is backing up your phones current ROM (aka Nandroid).
If anything goes wrong while trying to flash other ROMs or MODs, you can just simply restore your backup (and if you know where the problem is, you can restore only part of the backup). This feature is what made me install (or flash) CWM recovery.
And plus, it makes flashing ROMs and other stuff so easyyyyyy!!!
This forum isn't here to hold peoples hands to get them through rooting processes etc. All information is gathered in quite simple guides that are available for everyone to read so we won't have to explain over and over again to the thousands of new users how to do everything. Your question have been asked countless times and you would have found multiple threads with everything explained thouroughly if you used the search function (read the rules). But instead you created a new thread and made it harder for the next person to find information because this forum is filling up with a lot of similar threads that could have been avoided if people spent some time searching the forum. I don't mean to be offensive, but you have to be able to do something on your own if you want to enter the world of custom roms etc. New users should do some researching so that they know what they're getting in to and not just jump in head first and hope that somebody does everything for them
Anyway, here's something to get you started:

I tried to get Visionary+ but it has Trojan virus... anywhere else safer?!
and I don't get it, after permaroot is S-OFF (radio s-off) and after that what?! after my phone is S-OFF I install RomManager or is there sth in between?
Heres a genuine link .. LINK
well, after S-OFF, you install ROM Manager, then choose the first option from ROM Manager ('flash clockworkMod Recovery').
--ROM Manager and CWM recovery is not a MUST, but is needed to flash ROM and MODs to your device.
let me make it clear...
radio S-OFF is to allow you to flash new radios(if you dont know what a radio is, search ).
ENG S-OFF allows you to do more extreme things and can get you out of a 'nearly bricked' device (so i've heard). It makes your phone VERY flexible and allows you to modify nearly everything!
^--this is to my knowledge--^
anyway, this isnt needed to be rooted, it just increases the amount of thing you can do with your phone.
CWM recovery flashes over your stock HTC Recovery. Its also not a must, but also allows MUCH more flexibility.

I am having difficulty finding the thread here and I saw a few websites but not sure if I trust them. What is the best method, how-to for someone that has never rooted an android device before (done many iphones). Any good picture step-by-step procedures anywhere?
Thanks guys. I searched but had a hard time finding it here vs Google. Here is one I found, but unsure about it.

Search before jumping and make sure you are good with returning to stock. All of this info is in the forums already.
Thanks but that doesn't look like a step-by-step instructions on what I was looking for. :/
Now is this how we start the new year off....OP the information has been provided, just take your time and do your homework, give attention to detail, so you do not wrong your device.
Other Members just provide as you have done, and no need to bash, Thank You all.

I was going to say something mean but I decided not to.
I still don't see instructions anywhere on that page on how to do this root. Pretty sad I am getting better responses on other Android sites than this one. Plus what I do see is his rom has issues with 4.1.2 update.

You amaze me but I will try one more time to help.
Look at the link I gave you in post 2. Download the app in post 1 of that thread. Install it and follow the instructions from that thread. They are there and detailed. You press a few buttons and are rooted. There is no ROM on that thread.
I say this in all seriousness and am not trying to be mean, but you need to stop and think before you move forward. If you are having trouble reading this thread and the one I linked to you, then you probably don't understand what to do without causing damage. Read, read, read, read, and then read some more before you go any further. There are also numerous threads in this forum giving detailed step by step instructions.

This video might help you, it exlains the thread/app Gvndeb60 posted:
http://youtu.be/G2_zHqsC4BE
There is a guide on Android Central with videos may help too! Same for process for the 4.1.2 update.
If you are having trouble understanding All those easy steps that are laid out for you. You should do research before rooting. Some things include learning what you can do when you root your device. It won't take long if you have some background in editing your phone system. But by the looks of it your going to seriously mess up your phone. And even if you are getting better responses on other sites. If you don't learn to respect people here you will be confused because every site that talks about rooting or provides a rom will lead you back here. This community is huge so learn to embrace and read threads before attacking our fellow members.

just follow the video and you're good to go.
I did the root, but removed it since it broke my camera. So I need a root that does not break my camera and that doesn't require replacing those files as I saw online many not recommending it.

Do the root by itself. Don't patch the exploit, as that's what appears to break the camera. I believe there's an option to undo the patch.

Simple easy to follow took less than 5 minutes... as opposed to my htc inspire 4g which was a pain in the ass! Before you root anything ask whats the design goal..identify the risks and BACKUP everything and make sure you know how to restore it! Lots of incredibly talented folks here it's ok to not know what your doing but not ok to not know who to ask before bulling ahead and making an expensive mistake!

Maybe this is a dumb question, but people say to backup your device before you root. I thought that making nandroid or titanium backups required root... So how does one restore to an unrooted device without first rooting?

I've never done any sort of backups prior to rooting any phones in the last 3 yrs. Everything u need to unroot are available online.

Probably not before rooting. Using the Exynos Abuse apk, you will root in 5 seconds. It will put Super user on your phone and you can get Titanium Backup and then backup all user and system apps to your SD card etc. You can then debloat apps etc. You should probably uninstall the app with TB and keep it for a few days to make sure your phones works properly before deleting the app. Before flashing a ROM you should always backup incase something goes wrong you have something to flash back to.
can someone point me to a 157 stock rooted rom? i can't seem to find it anywhere on this forum. Unless it doesn't exist for some reason?thanks in advance
you are kidding me???
http://forum.xda-developers.com/sony-xperia-z1-compact/development/rom-d550314-4-0-157latest-t2957307
1) check your sarcasm, i'm not your son
2) that's not stock
3) if this is all that's available, i will use it, thank you for pointing me to it.
There is some threads about it that's first. Second you should even type in google or on xda here couple words before starts new thread. Third you should flash 108 kernel than use newroot and after that flash again 157 kernel. And that's all procedure
Happy flashing

I wouldn't be here unless my searches came up fruitless.
Answer me this, if i do the OTA update and root that, would it reset my bootloader? i know it will reset the recovery

I think I remember reading if you do an OTA with an unlocked bootloader you could brick it.

People are baffled how others, especially People with around 500 posts can start such threads when the methods to root can be found in the General section, which have been there for weeks, and if you've not found a stock rooted ROM or as close as in the first few pages of both development threads that suits your needs then you're out of luck. Simply flash a stock ftf and root it if you want a clean as possible ROM, then mod it to your own needs.

Thats most People say who start such threads when what they're asking for is usually on the first or second page of the General section. http://forum.xda-developers.com/son...rmeare-d5503customized-de1279-697814-t2931326
how you feel about it is irrelevant, if i'm telling you my search didn't work, it didn't work. Why would i voluntarily be dicking around here wasting time with you sarcastic people?
I appreciate the link

Again, members with nearly 500 posts should know where to find the most common files, so telling People you've searched, except for using your eyes as pointed out, then expect a little sarcasm.
