It's just software. But probably will significantly affect battery life as camera has to work all the time screen is on and has to process images.
I doubt they use camera, my guess is they use the RGB light sensor...

Really good program.

I'm not sure if I'm the only one, but I find the Galaxy S III's screen to be terribly dim in sunlight. Poking around the internet, I found that Samsung manually cut down the maximum display power, nearly halving it from the S II.
The Galaxy S III uses a 1280-by-720, PenTile AMOLED screen, which is higher resolution, but dimmer than the Galaxy S I and Galaxy S II screens, Soneira said. The culprit seems to be power management: in trying to get decent battery life with a huge 4.8-inch display, Samsung had to turn the brightness down.
Power consumption figures bear that out. Samsung cut maximum display power from 2.1 watts on the Galaxy S II to 1.3 watts on the Galaxy S III, dropping maximum brightness from 289 candelas per square meter to 224. The lower power usage, however, lets the S III get solid battery life even with the larger screen: running time with the display on increased from 4.4 hours on the Galaxy S II to 5.6 hours on the S III.

My question is if it's possible to manually increase the display power, since in my understanding it's being artificially lowered? Like similar to under-clocking or something? Sorry, I'm not really that tech knowledgeable.

Lux or ScreenFilter (they just make a dark overlay on your screen basically)
The Thanks button is just to avoid "THANKS" posts in threads. Don't defeat the purpose of why it was introduced.

Well, at night the screen looks really bright, even at its lowest setting. With an app such as "screen filter" you can use your phone in bed or whatever both without hurting your eyes and (potentially?) saving your battery.

Anyone else find the screen to be lacking sharpness?
I'm coming from a gs5, and this phone doesn't seem as crisp with text as well as images.
Went to best buy tonight and looked at the 3 they had on display and they all looked the same.
I also think the colors are muted compared to the gs5, but I'm not sure if that is a bad thing or not.

the colors "seem muted" to you coming from a gs5 because the gs5 colors are saturated. the note 4's colors are more closer to the right color spectrum than any amoled display has ever been. the note 4's colors are more natural, more realistic.

Thank you, I do understand that. But it still doesn't explain why the screen seems blurry compared to the gs5.
It's almost as if everything the extra resolution is causing it. If I look at a very high resolution picture, it appear to look fine, but then everything else seems slightly off.

I thought I was the only one. I got my Note 4 yesterday and of course I didn't take my eyes off of it for a good hour or so and I thought it was in my head that my vision was blurry. After reading that the phone may not get root and the display disappointment, I'm strongly considering taking it back and keeping my S5.

Yeah, doesn't do anything except change the colors slightly. The more I'm using the phone the more I get used to it. I really hated the S5, so I'm not going back to it(the bluetooth wouldn't work properly with my car).

This.
At the PPI we're talking about for all three phones (Note 3, SGS5, Note 4) unless you have better than 20/20 vision and/or are holding the device less than 10" away differences in sharpness wouldn't be detectable. Difference in display quality yes. It's about visual acuity which is the lowest common denominator.
As for the Note 4<>Note 3, the display seems "better." What better means to me (which is purely subjective) is it's brighter on the same setting I previously used, it seems crisper, and the colors seem more realistic.

Subjectively, based on your tastes, sure, why not. Objectively, not so much...
Our detailed Lab tests show that there have been significant display performance improvements in the new Note models [4 & Edge] including higher resolution, higher absolute color accuracy with better calibration, higher peak brightness with improved screen visibility and readability in high ambient light, and higher display power efficiency, resulting in a number of new records for Smartphone display performance.
What is particularly significant and impressive is that Samsung has been systematically improving OLED display performance twice a year with each Galaxy generation since 2010. With the Galaxy Note 4 there are many significant improvements over the Galaxy Note 3 that we tested a year ago, but also with the Galaxy S5 that we tested in March, and Galaxy Tab S that we tested in June. The most impressive improvements for the Galaxy Note 4 are in the pixels per inch and resolution, the Absolute Color Accuracy, Peak Brightness and screen viewability in High Ambient Light, and display Power Efficiency, which we discuss in turn below.
http://www.displaymate.com/Galaxy_Note4_ShootOut_1.htm
Here is a side by side. Maybe it's just because everything is bigger that it looks slightly blurry to me.
Not sure how good this will look.

The only thing that matters is how you think it looks. Like so many subjective things discussed on XDA (lag, battery life, overheating, build quality, AOSP vs. overlay) if you're looking for consensus it ain't gonna happen.

Just tried out light painting mode on the camera and noticed the image is flipped/ mirror. This is using the rear camera..

i light painting, there are 4 sub modes... light graffiti is the only one that is flipped. i am guessing they worry when ppl write letters with light, it might be opposite, hence image is flipped/ mirror...
so, i guess need to be careful what is the selected mode when using this light painting. i didn't notice the sub-modes until much later.

managed to finally test with p9.. and.. ya, it's also flipped for graffiti painting. so I guess it's a feature.. and I can see why though I don't necessarily agree.. if a person looking at the camera when doing like painting, then ya, flipping image might then make the alphabet look "correct". but I'm the type that write "correctly" when doing this.. so flipping the image means my alphabet is no longer correct..
but.. I'm ok with it I guess. just good info to know.. plus, make sure you know which sub mode you're using.. coz if you left it at graffiti painting when you wanna capture traffic, then image is flipped/ mirror..
how wide is the actual display area? i know the official widness of the phone im reffering to the actual display area not the black bars just whats displayed can someone measure it?
reason i ask is the nexus 6 is listed as 3.27 wide the a70 as 3.02 but unless its a opticial trick the nexus 6 seems to have thicker black bars on each side then the a70 so i wonder how much wideness in actual display im losing
well ill let everyone know next week! i said screw it and bought the a70

The display is 7cm / 2.75"wide. The bezels are 0.3cm wide on the side so the phone itself is 7.6cm / 2.99" wide. . The 3.02" figure probably includes the buttons I guess lol
