hello people,
okay im thinking of buying a WP7 device but but i can't decide between Omnia 7 or LG optimus 7,
i can get either one of them in 16gb, as i can just get the omnia 7 16gb from germany change the language to english and the optimus comes in 16gb only anyway so storage isn't problem
the only difference is that the omnia is bigger and has better screen according to people, but i dont really care about having/not having an SAMOLED while the lg looks slimmer and easier to hold, and alot of people have said the back and search button on the omnia is too sensitive so im guessing that would be bad when reading or playing games
so question 1; can you stick the omina in a skinny jeans while sticking an earphone in the head phone jack or is it too big?
2: would having a 3.8inch screen on the lg affect gaming and reading books on the phone as it seems almost all smartphones are required to have a 4.0inch or bigger screens
Well i have a Mozart because of its nice "pocket-size".
But i have to admit that the Omnias screen is really nice and has a lot of advantages while browsing/reading etc, but i prefer a phone which easily fits into my pocket because i am not reading or surfing all the time.
Seriously, most of the time your phone will be in your pocket, so you have to test out, which phone you prefer
I'm posting this from an LG quantum. I believe it has the smallest screen of all wp7's. I've checked out the focus, and to be honest I don't at all think my experience is any worse. Everything comes thru clear and looking very high res. And even that would be a plus of a smaller screen, higher pixel density.
These phones are very high end, I don't think screen size will make that much of a difference.
Oh and skinny jeans? Really? 2007 called, it wants its feminine douchebag fashion back.
Omnia7 has a better form factor and of course the amazing amoled, and IMHO it does matter. What I don't like with the optimus 7 is its home key button, it looks quite cheap and I believe it doesn't wake up the screen if pressed coming from sleep. As for the omnia7 back and search buttons, its true...being quite sensitive. I have a fried who has big hands and keeps on hitting it accidentally as he uses the device for browsing. For me, I already get the hang of using it without hitting it. So it takes a little getting used to but the pros outweigh the cons that's for sure especially if you say you can get the 16GB version. I only have the 8 but I'm I still have 2 GB left after all the stuff I have.

I would go for the LG. I've had my HD7 for about a month and I hate the capacitive buttons more than I could have ever imagined hating them. I have to always be conscious of how I hold my phone because if your finger grazes the wrong part of the phone you'll get kicked out of whatever you were doing. I type way slower than I used to type on my much smaller iPhone because I need to be extra careful when I hit the space bar; if I overshoot it by a millimeter I hit the home key. I also type slower because I can't hold the phone with my optimal grip, the capacitive buttons force you to keep your hands clear of that area.
For the life of me I can't figure out why someone would prefer capacative buttons.
I would go for the LG just because it feels better built the Samsung is all plastic and feels a little cheap.
Screen size I think is negligible in this case as .2 inches isn't really a big deal. At least I don't think so.

The size difference is about .5 I believe when you are comparing thinness.
I would say that the screen difference is neglectable at best.

Omnia 7 uses metal. Probably explains why it is 20g heavier than the Focus.

Yeah actually at first I wondered why LG would make the home button on the quantum a physical button, but after reading about the sensitivity, and noticing how sensitive the back and search button on mine are, I'm glad they did. And I assume it was on purpose with this knowledge?
You can use the iPhone as a comparison, assuming you've used one. It has a 3.5" screen, and I find it's big enough for most tasks.

IMO 4" are better than 4.3" in this case HTC really has lost their way.
That said, I wish there was a Samsung device with a 4.3" (or perhaps even 4.5") screen.
i wanted to get the Samsung Omnia 7 just for the amoled screen. But 8GB of memory is too little for me so i got the HD7. The screen wasn't as bad as i expected (coming from the HD2) its really nice and colourful.
4,3? damn before i would buy that i would go for a 7" one
$10 credit card sized phone and serious touch tablet

My point wasn't that bigger was too big, but that if 3.5" isn't too small, then neither will 3.8/4" be.

The Omnia 7 has a more or less complete metal casing.
I'd get the LG Optimus 7. I compared it with the Samsung Omnia 7 in a store and I THINK THE SCREEN ON THE LG IS BETTER.
Why:
1)
Most OLED screens have a lower effective resolution than normal LCDs because they have fewer subpixels. If you compare both you will notice text on webpages etc is looking jagged on OLED displays and much smoother on normal LCDs.
Search for "pentile matrix" on google.
2)
OLED screens consume big amounts of power when the image is very bright (black text on white background like on most web pages). To reduce power the OLED is auto-reducing brightness if an image with many white areas is displayed. WTF! This would p*ss me off. At least the store units did this and changed brightness while scrolling from dark areas to bright areas on a web page.
3)
OK the black levels on OLED are better but the LG's arent that bad.
Viewing angles arent good on the LG but I dont notice this at all in daily use.
Other points:
4)
Hardware buttons instead of touch (though the buttons arent that great but they do their job).
5)
Many free LG exclusive apps available.
6)
Hacking: Integrated MFG-tool with many options like a basic registry editor without unlocking (unlock works fine btw).
I bought an Optimus 7 and its working quite well. Second on my list was the Mozart which is also very nice, but I activated the capacitive search button by mistake all the time while testing.
Optimus 7 downsides:
-Headphone out has sligtly audible background noise, even more when on an active GPRS connection
-My device creaks a bit if you press it in between your fingers with force
-Pinkish spot in center of pictures taken with camera
-Supplied headphones are a piece of **** at least compared to my Koss Porta Pro
-First unit had broken bluetooth, had to send it in for repairs, now its ok
-Ringer volume is kinda low (no secondary speaker)
Hi all,
Every time I get a new phone, I like to write a guide giving my impressions and help anyone that may be interested in getting it as well.
Just to give you an overview, I've had android devices since September 2010.
Device history: Motorola Cliq>MyTouch 3G Slide>HTC G2> MyTouch 4G Slide
Now onto the Glide...
Build quality is solid, albeit cheap at times. It's very plasticky and light. All of my previous phones have felt much more dense in the hand. The shiny plastic bezel around the sides gets scratched up very easily, as does the top bezel over the screen. The top bezel wear is mostly from using the keyboard, as when you go to press the top keys, your fingernails may scrape the bezel. The back cover is nice, although I prefer soft touch finishes. My G2 felt the best in the hand. Back cover withstands knocks fairly well, and doesn't show scratches easily.
The charging port cover is a nice touch.
This is the biggest device I've owned thus far, and the bulk is becoming apparent. I wish Samsung worked a little harder on getting the form factor down in size a bit, because I feel as though it's not as optimal as it could be. When I pick up a phone, I want to feel that I'm holding nothing but the screen and keys I need. This phone feels a little wider and taller than necessary. Very blocky. If they tapered the edges more, this phone would be much easier to hold. There's a lot of space between the soft keys and screen and around the screen in general. This is about as big as I will go for form factor, because it's just starting to get a little unmanageable.
I wish Samsung made the screen a little bigger or added a trackpad, instead of making room to stick their logo on the front. The amount of space it takes up is deliberate and offsets the entire screen on the phone.
Screen: It's very bright and colorful. I appreciate the extra screen space over my old phones. This is about the limit for screen size for me. I don't think going any bigger would make the phone any better. I will however mention that the screen resolution is quite low for a screen this size. I didn't think I would notice it as much, but text does become hard to read when you try to zoom out on a webpage. 75% of the time, this is not a big deal but it's prominent enough that I mention it. There's a subtle hint of sharpness missing when it comes to the screen.
I hope that future phones will work more towards having edge to edge displays or displays without bezels (such as the Droid Razr M).
Keyboard: It will take some time to get used to, but it's a decent keyboard. Tactile feedback, although the keys are flat. Not the best keyboard I've used, but heaps better than my previous phone the 4G Slide. The keys are big enough that the flatness doesn't matter much. But it is hard to type on this phone without looking, if that's your thing. The G2 keyboard is hands down the best keyboard I've used on a device. I like the accent colors for different symbols and numbers
Battery: The stock battery that comes with this phone is very good. It holds a charge very well and can last you through the whole day with light to moderate use. I find myself charging my phone less than my previous phone, even though the screen size is bigger. Definite plus.
Speed: This is all relative now. Any phone you buy today will have more than enough power for your daily tasks and beyond. I have noticed that the Tegra 2 chipset is terrifically fast and tackles anything I throw at it effortlessly. I did not expect anything less. I would like to point out that, when under load, the phone does not feel as hot as my older phones did, even though the temps still go fairly high. While playing GTA Vice City over an hour the temperature peaks at around 50 degrees Celsius. I suspect the plastic helps with this, as when my G2 got that hot, the metal accents made it uncomfortable to hold.
What's interesting to note is this: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmarklist.2436.0.html
The Tegra 2 ranks all the way down at 640. But just the fact that it's on the list impresses me. I expect that phones will catch up to laptops in terms of computing power within the next 1-2 years. They are already matching laptop chips from 8 years ago.
Faults:
I sorely miss my physical trackpad. I used it on a daily basis, and it's a blaring omission on this device. I would always use my trackpad to wake the phone, as it's very easily accessible and the easiest button to locate on a device. It's also much easier to reach for, vs. the power button. The similar sized Relay 4G manages to incorporate a physical button (not trackpad) in the same size as the Glide. The trackpad was also a great way to edit text on screen without the keyboard open.
Speaking of the power button, I kinda wish it was placed up top. It's in an awkward position, very close to the top corner of the phone. If it's going to be that high up the side of the device, might as well put it on top because you index finger has a longer reach than your thumb (yes, I've thought about this extensively).
The charging port is poorly placed. It's almost impossible to use the keyboard if your phone is charging. There's no good way to wrap your hands around the phone when charging. Also puts unnecessary strain on the cable and port if you're talking on the phone while charging, as it's at the top of the phone. Having the headphone jack right next to it only compounds the problem. Although the keyboard is still ok to use when you have only headphones plugged in.
There is no notification light. Very big miss on Samsung's end with this one. Why they couldn't throw one in is beyond me.
I will update this review, the more I own the phone. If there's anything you'd like me to comment on or compare, please let me know. I'd be more than happy to add it.
Nice review, you showed pretty much the most important downsides of the phone. I would also add RDS radio, which to me is the most important omission. The led notification can be decently passed with NoLed app.
I got mine just a week ago, and I can say I enjoy it, it's surprisingly powerful. As my first smartphone, can't really compare, but overall, it met all my expectations, and for the money I paid (155$) it is a pleasure. In Europe one can't really find anything close as performance to this.
Great phone overall.
Indeed this is an S2 variant with QWERTY sans FM radio hardware and larger screen. I was thinking of getting an S3 Mini instead will probably go for a second Captivate Glide for my gym and car audio use.
God knows when we'll see an S3 QWERTY variant.

I doubt we'll ever see any more QWERTY devices. The last one was released in September 2012, and there hasn't been any word on a new phone coming out. And very few of the phones available are actual high end premium stuff. Not the mid range garbage you're used to seeing all the time.
They are getting quite rare and hard to come by.

Speaking of the Relay 4G, I actually just picked one up.
I can safely say, the hardware is flawless. It actually covers EVERY one of the faults I listed with the Glide.
I don't want to trade in my Glide just yet though, considering dev support for the Glide is much further along (nearly perfect).
If anyone would like direct comparisons or side by side details, please let me know. Both of these phones are arguably the best Android QWERTYs currently on the market.

Hi gtmaster! I found this forum (and you!) looking for a comparative between captivate glide and relay. I read your great review about the glide, and I'll be very interested if you could write some sort of summary telling what is better and what is worse in the relay.
Of course my biggest concern is how the keyboard performs (if not I wouln't be looking for a qwerty ), but for example, how the 5MP camera in the relay compare to the 8MP in the glide, regarding pictures and videos?
Thanks in advance mate!

I think this is a great review. I just wanted to add a few notes from my own perspective.
Keyboard: This is the worst keyboard I've ever owned. My previous devices have been blackberries up until getting a Stratosphere last year. It's soft, the targets are imprecise, and the tactical feedback is... squishy. Being 4-rows sucks, and aside from that it's marginally worse than the Strat in feel (strat is 5 row and, well... better.) Still, compared to BB, a joke. This keyboard actually drops to the level of being fatiguing to use. Where I would have no problem writing a novel on the BB, and a blog post on the Strat, I've actually started to use the virtual keyboard even for poking around in C source files on the terminal in VIM.
Hardware: Damn this tegra 2 is fast and silky. I have a side-by-side debian install and even building C++ projects I feel is only limited by the SD card speed. I can't see needing to upgrade this guy for a long time. Unless the Blaze has a much better keyboard (and has 1900mhz support, I travel the globe, dammit.)
Network: Has been pretty good. I'm travelling in Costa Rica right now, and I get HSPA+ almost everywhere. A few times I have had to re-register on the network (even a reboot wouldn't get me back) but I blame that on latin america cell service.
Wifi: Reception is about on par with other phones. Not as good as my Nexus7, nowhere near as good as my laptop, but if I'm reasonably close to the signal it does OK.
Battery: Bad. I got even got a giant 3800mah beast. Fortunately with thegreatergood's cm10.1, latest litekernel, inverted apps, and ondemand governor, I've gotten it to where it is serviceable. Being a former BB user, I still scratch my head when people think getting through almost an entire day with barely using your device before it dies means it's good. I can get about 2-3 hours of screen time now before things start to get low, and it can idle for days. I'd like more, but soldering the stock battery in parallel to this monster I have in here doesn't seem like an awesome idea.
Overall I'm extremely pleased with this device. It's so fluid and smooth - all of that "Android lag/stutter" I've come to expect over the years (developing on android and such, just never using one as my personal device) is all gone. It's not as "smooth" as my wife's jesusPhone4s, but god the UI on her phone seems so primitive and ugly compared to mine.
I feel like this is the first phone (thanks to thegreatergood, dman and CM10 team) that I'm really happy with since my torch, but I use it more than the torch because that was basically only good for talk/text/email. This phone is inferior at the text/email part, but better at everything else. And I can run a full blown Django dev server on it so I can code on the road .

So in response to your query (better late than never)...
The Relay 4G is much better than the Captivate Glide in a lot of key areas. I feel as though Samsung deliberately took the Glide back to the drawing board and corrected most, if not all of the flaws the phone had.
For starters, it's a much better device to hold. The back of the Captivate Glide is very slippery, despite being raised and textured plastic. I don't know why but I'm always scared of dropping it. The Relay 4G has a soft touch finish on the back which nicer to hold and easier to grip. Even though the Relay is marginally bigger than the Glide, the tapered and rounded edges make it fit in the hand naturally. The hand is not made to accommodate flat and angular objects well. This is especially apparent when you hold up an iPhone 4/4S/5. Sure, it's a high end device and feels like a luxury item, but it never felt ergonomic.
The phone has a notification light (Hurrah!). It also has a physical home button. It's well placed and easily accessible, making the phone to turn on a breeze.
The keyboard. Ok, this is where things get interesting.... It's not a bad keyboard by any means. I've used quite a few keyboards over the past few years and this one is somewhere in the middle. On the one hand, the keys are very responsive and properly spaced out (horizontally). But on the other hand, the whole orientation of the keyboard is shifted to the left for some reason. It doesn't feel centered or natural. You can grow accustomed to anything over time, and this by no means a deal breaker but it is a quirk to be mentioned. Also, I noticed that the keys themselves are very thin. Although the typing and feedback is precise, there's not much room between the keys vertically. I feel like Samsung focused hard on trying to cram a number row into a dedicated keyboard space and slightly ruined it.
The camera is decent. It's by no means the best camera you will ever use, and it will get the job done in a pinch. But don't ditch your old point and shoot for this camera. There's a lot of noise whenever you take pictures with a lot of detail. If you put in a little effort though, it will give you some great shots for a phone. I think when Samsung was designing this phone, the camera is where they cut corners and I'm glad they decided to do that here. I'd rather they cut corners here than with the keyboard, battery, or design.
The way I see it is, if you're buying a phone for its camera, you're buying it for the wrong reason. The cameras that manufacturers slap onto the back of phones these days are monumentally better than they used to be, but in the real world they still pale in comparison to a dedicated point and shoot. Sure you can probably get some amazing shots when you put them side by side. But with the phone, the angle, lighting, distance, location, status of your marriage, amount of mortgage you have left, what day of the week it is, and what kind of car you drive all have to be just right to get those amazing shots. Smartphones are closing the gap, but we're not there yet folks...
Overall the Relay feels solid in the hand, but at the end of the day it's still plastic. I don't care what you have to say about plastic or what kind of finish you put on it. The phone still feels cheaper (notice I didn't say cheap outright). It's solid I'll give you that, but you don't get the sense that you have a high end crafted device. Nor is this meant to be. Plastic and quality never go in the same sentence, no matter how hard you try. You cannot escape the fact that this phone is very generic bland looking, plasticky, and boring black. Personally I don't care so much for looks as I do for functionality, but ever since I've moved away from HTC devices and into Samsung devices, I noticed that the physical presentation of the phone isn't anything to write home about. Although I will say the styling is slightly better than the Captivate Glide. But that's like saying Rosie O'Donnell is slightly better looking than Whoopi Goldberg.
The Relay is, what the Captivate Glide should've been. After spending some time with the Relay, I realize that the Glide was more of an afterthought, rather than an actual phone designed for people who love a keyboard. So would I say you get one? ABSOLUTELY. But do I expect more from Samsung, or any manufacturer that's going to make the next android QWERTY? Yes.
Does any of that really matter? Not in the least. Because whoever makes the next QWERTY (assuming there is one), knows that it's a lukewarm market with no competitors and the sole buyers being the low-mid range market, texting teenagers, and us.
Thank you for your reviews.
I don't own a Relay, but reading the specs it looks like glide has better camera (as you said), more powerful processor (please correct me) and gorilla glass, which Relay doesn't have.
Relay apparently has no FM Radio, which is a lack in Glide (not the main, yet i would enjoy).
Glide has 4 soft keys on the front, instead of Relay's 3 (and i think this is a point for Glide, for esthetics and functionality).
Looking at the specs, i don't understand what makes Relay so far better than Glide.

No, the glide is definitely slower. Gorilla glass is just a gimmick as far as I'm concerned. Sure it may be stronger, but it all depends on how you drop your phone. If it impacts a certain way, it will crack. Sometimes you get lucky and it won't. It has more to do with the design rather than the glass itself.
I would much rather have a physical home button, even if it means I lose a soft key. The ease of use is tremendous.
The relay is an all around better package than the glide. It's not amazingly better in any single way, but all the little changes add up to make a big difference.

Battery on the Glide, and Relay AT&T
Hello,
Thanks for the great reviews.
I've got two questions, first is the Relay an AT&T phone? I was under the impression it was not.
Second, with regards to the battery on the Glide, for me I've found it rather disappointing, if I barely use the phone, I can get two days out of it. This is not ideal, I don't want a phone just to sit around, I want to talk, text, that's the main maybe some google play stuff, a hard day of use and I've got to charge the battery nightly. I'd love to know tips on battery improvement or a battery of the extended variety that will work with the glide?
Thanks.

1 full day's use with a battery is not considered to be dsiappointing in the Android world. It is rather considered fair.

this is something noone else has thought of either because it's a very stupid idea or because noone wanted it or thought about it, but i thought i could try any way, this app disables the edge display on the galaxy note 10, it disables it both visually and physically, touch will be completely disabled, i plan on having button shortcuts added too so you can launch the camera for example like a shutter button, this is a very niche idea that i doubt will be of interest to anyone, i am considering releasing it just as an experiment though, i made this thread to see what interest it gets in order to know if i should release it or not, my way of thinking when it comes to apps is just different, i don't like curves i don't like edge displays hence why i tried to get rid of it both for design and for the picture being distorted by the curve, theres ofcourse bugs associated with this, as the screen is meant to reach to the edge text or buttons can be difficult or impossible to press, so yeah a very niche idea but honestly it's growing on me to the point of the phone looking strange when i disable the app, it completely changes the look of the phone makes it almost unrecognizable like a note 9 with a flat display
Wasn't able to add a picture
It sounds interesting, I will try it if you release it
It really is growing on me

thank you i may actually do that at first i thought it was a stupid idea everyone would hate but it's growing on me see the last picture i posted it's not ugly.
Good luck for you. But just curious why you bought this phone if you don't like curve screen.
Your idea is basically making a think bezel at the side.
Regarding accidently touching, Samsung already made an app called Edge Touch, which can customize area that immune to touch.

well theres no new phone without an edge display, theres two things i hate with new phones, edge displays and curved display corners, i just want a square flat display but thats pretty much if not impossible, i bought the note 10+ because it looks similar to a sony xperia with thin bezels, i only bought the note 10+ because it has a boxy design something that appeals to me, otherwise i would never buy it if it looked like a galaxy s10 i wouldn't even look in it's direction, i just tolerated the edge display but i never wanted it it ruins the phone the curved display corners ruins it too these are things that makes me want to send it back and buy a sony again but sony has curved displaycorners too which i hate so much i ended up sending the xperia 1 back as i could not stand those corners, the bezels on a xperia 1 or 5 are also uneven thicker at the top than the bottom which i can't stand i am also not a big fan of the 21:9 aspectratio which leaves practically no phone left, all phones look exactly the same the one plus 7 looks like a galaxy, the rog phone looks like a galaxy with thin bezels and ridiculous back, what i wouldn't pay for a sony xperia xz1 same metal build and design with an oled panel and bezels as thin as the note 10+ i would pay 1500 or more for that for that as i find myself wanting to go back to my xz1, the note 10+ is not good enough for that cost but it's very very close, the design makes me incredibly biased towards it, i also don't like how warm the display is even at the colest possible setting every time i look at the xz1 i just prefer the display more, i know about that app i use it myself, this app was meant to also remove the edge display visually.

There is the S10e which is relatively new , then there it the Oneplus 7, Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro, and many others with flat Displays, your just meaning there isn't a Note that has a flat Display

s10e is way too round so i can't get that one
mi6t too round
oneplus 7 too round and a notch
what i require from a anew phone
1.boxy design like the note 10+ (anything rounder than the note 10+ and i won't even consider it i got the huawei mate 10 pro and it's nice but too round but i still got it as i knew flat square displays were a dying breed)
2.square flat display with no rounded screen corners
these are two things that simply do not exist in a new phone apart from the razer phone but that one has giant bezels and no oled, for some reason they are that rare the xperia 1 and 5 is as close as i can get, xperia 1 and 5 and note 10+ are the only phones for my taste theres nothing else i've looked everywhere it just doesn't exist it seems people are obsessed with round phones why i don't know, it's like i am an alien when it comes to smartphone design taste, i just don't understand why people want a curved display and when they say anything bad about it it's that it's pretty but not practical, i neither want it for the look or for it's feel.

I'm not obsessed and think that the wrong term, The edge Display (Agreed not practical) as in its functionality, however it does aid in the slimmer feel, mainly yes aesthetic, I have the Mate 20 X 5G also, that is a flat Display (7.2" of goodness) but I do appreciate the curve as it looks and yea feels good.
We are all into different things and for an OEM or OEMs to cater for every individual likes or wants (needs) then come on that's just not viable.
You are another level cookie ...... cant imagine there will ever be that device for you, especially now with the waterfall Display and folding phone Era
Not having a good not everyone is comfortable with the curve that's perfectly fine, but it's not going to change with Samsung, They might evolve the note line into the fold, but as if now the curve is here to stay.
The App is a solution for you and if it makes it a better experience then that's great, for me personally, obviously I bought the Note knowing its curve, so its neither a hindrance or a bother to me....

yeah i will never have the perfect smartphone i actually designed my own because of that
www.facebook.com/symetium/videos/2135545376537234/
did a curved design too this is where a curve is justified and i do like that type of curved design
and the app was not made just for that reason it was also made as a fun test
i use edge touch as that also disables the edge screens , find it within goodlock

Apple is trying really hard to make their phones uglier than the Pixel! Have you seen the new design?
Late reaction but I too want the ability to deactivate the edges of my screen. My reason is that that XServer XSDL used in combination with Linux Deploy will take all the available screen to display and that leads to buttons on the curved edges being almost hidden. I realise this is either very difficult or impossible to achieve and that a simpler solution would be to find/make another XServer application but this can be help in other situations. But since this thread is there I was hoping to check if zzcool or anyone else had a solution.

If you use something like the Zizo Bolt case accidental touches just don't happen.
This phone need a good case or it will be damaged... eventually.
I use the curve portion to house One Handed Operation plus, it works out nicely.
Occasionally I need to rotate into Landscape mode when cut/pasting, more often I do that for lengthening the search bar though.
I like the curved display... after some adjustment.
The square corners is what I really like... rounded corners look hideous.
iPhones look goofy... trix are for kids
if you HAD to pick one Negative about the phone, what would it be?
amongst the list of things i don't like, i must choose the one thing i use every single day, multiple times a day.
the POWER Button.
my previous device (huawei mate 20x), had a taught power button which didn't wiggle around, satisfying click when pressed, and for a bonus, textured and colored.
the Fold: aside from failing to combine the Power button and the Fingerprint Scanner, the power button on the Fold is just like any other Galaxy device: cheap, thin, loose, and mushy to press.
anyone else have something that erks them using the phone daily?
I have problems with the fingerprint reader. I misplace my finger a lot. I miss FaceID it was so much smoother.
I don't use the button. I double tap the screen instead.
The front screen sucks. I can't text, email on it. It's so small. I love My fold, but the front screen kills me!

Thanks, it worked for a lot of my apps except Flipboard. For some reason it keeps acting like a phone app even when I set it to 952 dpi.

here is something almost everyone doesn't think about when wishing for an edge to edge, top to bottom, front display:
how much imbalance it would create on the phone. one handed use would be completely be gone.
- for someone not using a launcher: reaching up top to swipe down notification shade
- whether using standard navigation buttons, or using edge swiping: imagine reaching all the way down just to hit he navigation area
- people who use swipe one handed for text, it actually is perfect ergonomically the way it is now.
- not everyone has big hands
during and even before the Fold presentation almost a year ago, everyone was criticizing the front screen size without thinking about it in depth, and people STILL criticize it in newer videos, made 2 or 3 months ago.
all they see is bezel and think "its 2019/2020, wtf are we doing with huge bezels?!?!?"
i hope samsung doesn't listen to all these brainless people moaning and groaning about screen to body ratio % in their next folding tablet device.

Actually the front screen doesn't have to be all the front, but it definitely needs to be wider. It's just to narrow to write fast and without issues. It works, but it's cumbersome. I mostly swipe or dictate because typing is too annoying ?
To your main question, one thing I hate about the Fold:
There are some things which could be better, like the fingerprint reader integrated into the power button, no notch, S-Pen support, wider front screen, glass screen, IP ratings, faster charging (like Note10+) and much much more... but there's just 1 thing which really annoys me: the selfie cameras. They're all ****ty. Even compared to S7 until Note10+ it's just ****. The can't focus on something you tap. All Samsung flagships can do it. It's so ****ty I don't take any selfies anymore. Even using GCam doesn't change anything because it's a hardware thing. To be honest, they could have added the Note10 selfie cam on the small front and no other cameras. They could also remove the notch since the cameras are very bad ?
Seems like the Vivo X Fold is going to give Samsung competition for the Fold 4.
If I thought I could get the Vivo X Fold to work on my US Carrier - I would give it a shot. Perhaps by the time the Fold 4 is introduced, it might be available in the US and that might push me towards it.
Anyone else here considering getting a Vivo X Fold?
Isn't the Vivo X Fold a re-branded Oppo Find N?
More curious about the Google Fold.

I am looking to sell my fold 3 for the vivo x fold. It's really my ideal hardware. The fold 4 isn't going to really drastically change that much. I really don't want a thinner device I want a more usable front display. right now, that's not happening for the Fold 4. I doubt it'll be the ideal for the fold 5 either.
Having said that I am buying it very VERY soon. Also the Vivo X fold works on every US carrier 5g.
Every. Single. One
I would try the Google fold over the Vivo. I doubt VZW would support Vivo phones.
I'm not sure if any software is gonna be as mature as Samsung's. Add to that the pen support is essential to me so probably no. I'm sticking to the Samsung folds for the time being
Nope. The hopefully Pixel Fold interests me more. I also really like the Oppo Find N

Got mine yesterday.... Bootloader cannot be unlocked, no root available, and no XDA forum for the device, despite request for forum submitted a while ago.... Other than that hardware including screens is amazing - way better than my Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2. Once forum is created, development starts and we get bootloader unlocked - this will be true king of foldables
Also, if you're like me and don't like white colored charging stands - this looks better and works better than original Vivo 50W wireless charger https://www.giztop.com/xiaomi-mi-100w-wireless-charging-stand.html
It charges the phone ridiculously fast
anyone who says no is kinda being disingenuous or is afraid of change. I have went from Samsung to Oneplus, to Huawei and the Now The VIVO X Fold. Its a great phone.... with one.... flaw that I'm working on removing....
For me no Spen support is a no-no. I had 3 Note devices (3,7/fe,10 lite) and can't go back for a device without some stylus support.
What are Vivo like for track record for software updates? One of the major draws for me for the Fold3 is the 3+ years of updates.
Got a ZFold3 ,and going for the ZFold4 , mainly because of the software/customization/root , SPen support and DEX
But also because of the IPX8, and the side mounted fingerprint ( which I like so much )
That vivo X Fold has a nice hardware, but for me is 70/30 software/hardware TBH

youll probably be able to root the vivo x fold first, unless youre getting a Exynos (Lesser processor version) of the device.
So device is in hand (it got delivered early) and these are my initial impressions:
It's larger than the fold and that's evident on the cover screen. It actually feels like a phone rather than a cramped remote control
It feels premium and while people complain it is heavier than the fold 3 I can't feel it that much. The weight is better distributed when the device is closed. Definitely the fold 3 feels lighter when it is open
Materials are super premium. The vegan leather feels nice. But other parts of the device feel seamless as well. Definitely a premium device
Fingerprint sensor is so fast. Day and night compared to the Pixel 6 Pro - actually Google should be ashamed.
You can OEM Unlock the X Fold! I found the option and it is enabled. Now whether or not it is actually enabled is anyone's guess but seeing the option there (and by proxy developer options) is rather great.
Putting my sim in the device I received the error because I'm not in mainland china, 5g won't work. But I suspect strongly my 5g will work. Currently using UK sim (3).
Camera is actually rather good. There's tons of configuration I haven't gone through in totality. But the photos are much closer than you realize. Which is to say on the main sensor Samsung and Vivo are neck and neck. But in zoom and other categories, X Fold demolishes Samsung
Software. It's a lot to take in and absorb. Mainly the keyboard could use some work and the alternatives I haven't found a split keyboard so if anyone knows of one, provide a suggestion.
You can also make the same argument for launchers available. Vivo stock launcher works, but there's a lot of swiping where you expect one action and you get a completely different action. Again it is probably due to using a chinese rom
Similarly, there are some things that don't directly translate when language is set to english. It's an annoyance rather than a frustration but you get what you get. It's not a global rom
Google Now feed I do miss. Again it's the muscle memory I was referring to in point 1
Software is SMOOTH as butter. The fold isn't so smooth and that's an issue directly with Samsung based devices. Which is a shame.
Charging is fast. That is all. It's slightly above the 37 minute claim BUT it's very fast charging.
The crease you can't really see it versus the fold 3 you can see and feel the crease.
Dual SIM! I came from a US variant fold 3 which didn't have dual sim capabilities so seeing that in the x fold is a treat.
Silence rocker! I see you Vivo - great idea.
There's a lot of bloat on the device. There's really no way around it and it'll take time to remove the bloat. I haven't tested rooting the device (yet) but I probably will at some point
There's something really satisfying about the tactile feel of the device and the opening and closing of the device. It's spectacular.
Increasing the speed of animation in developer options are greyed out surprisingly. It is okay but such an odd choice especially since OEM unlocking isn't greyed out
Those are my immediate thoughts. My major annoyances are the lack of split keyboard from third party alternatives and at the moment a launcher. HOWEVER if the bootloader can be unlocked (and at least I see OEM unlock there...) we could have some very fascinating options with any luck
Edit
Googling yielded a ton of options. By default the font is rather big - decrease the font size and that's one huge pain point taken away. You can also have an app launcher too rather than the nano shortcuts that is on default.
Slowly getting through the os and finding it actually pleasing. There's some software concerns with third party apps but I would say this is SUPER EXCITING

This is really insightful - thanks!
I saw videos on YouTube also showing "no crease". But, when I got my Fold3 the creases was hardly there as well. It tends to increase in size the more the device is used. I would be interested in to get update on this as your device ages.
But, thanks again for this.

On the Fold 3, I use SwiftKey and have it set to a split keyboard. I've been using SwiftKey for a super long time. Only thing is you can't have a different setup on the front screen, so it'll be split on the front, too. Not an issue for me since I don't really use the front screen except to respond to med reminders and start a new mode on my Apollo Neuro (anxiety device) and phone calls.

I'll definitely try that now and report back

This is really insightful - thanks!
I saw videos on YouTube also showing "no crease". But, when I got my Fold3 the creases was hardly there as well. It tends to increase in size the more the device is used. I would be interested in to get update on this as your device ages.
But, thanks again for this.

When I received my fold 3 day one I saw the crease. By day 3 it was a bit of an eye sore. And I rationalized it was a tradeoff due to the technical limitations available. However, it was something that bugged me. Immensely.
Having said that I see the construction of the hinge is a bit different almost taking their cues from oppo and Samsung to have a cohesive solution. More likely than not there will be another crease - it's just a matter of time. But one day is a bit too quick for me
Regarding the crease, do you leave the phone (any foldable) closed or opened during the night?
I have found that leaving the device open during the night decreases the crease quite a lot.
Also, do the same while charging. The device heats up during charging and the plastic screen also heats up.
Does Google pay work? I'm in the UK to and been considering one of these
