Cyanogen - queries

I keep pondering whether to install CM11 and the dev work going on looks like its working well. I'm frankly sick of lag and the lack of smooth scrolling. I'm not rooted so I've not tried debloating it tbh.
However if I take the jump, is it easy enough to regress and reinstall kitkat/lollipop (when its ready)? I know it'll trip the knox counter but will reinstalling kitkat revert it back to OTA's?
I've been disappointed with Samsungs support of their top flight tablet to be honest. I keep being told bull about a fix is coming to address the lag and lack of smooth running but its not landed and I've now had 2 devices since July and they are as bad as each other.

Have you tried just using a different launcher. Like Nova.

Use nova and greenify. Greenify can hibernate apps so it can stop lag and save battery, it even works without root!

You should be able to revert back to stock without problems. Your flash counter will be incremented, but that's ok.

Pretty much every app listed in Greenify is safe to hibernate (unless you start checking a whole lotta checkboxes in the setings; in that case, you are expected to know what you're doing)
To be honest: I tried debloating, Greenifying, etc. all before, but even though they helped a lot, they did not get rid of ALL lag.
I can honestly say that I have been using CM11 for over a month and a half now and I still am very happy with the performance.
Batttery life is so-so, but ten again: I have forgotten what it was like on TW Plus, greenify recovers some of that battery anyway.
You should note that the CM11 development has somewhat died for the t700, which I personally think is really sad considering the age of this Samsung flagship tablet.
But the Rom and kernel that are available are pretty much bugfree as they are, so you can use it as a daily driver without a problem

Is like prerooted? How does it go? I know you have to install gapps and the rom itself but my question is about the root.

It is pre-rooted, so all you need is a custom recovery and you can start

Where are all the ROMS?

I currently have a nexus 5 and I'm looking to upgrade. The G4 looks like a great option as it have more RAM better processor, better screen and mainly an SD SLOT!!!! I currently am getting by with 16GB which is then around 10GB usuable. My question is is this phone worth getting considering I would like a custom ROM. I'd be happy with CM12 but there doesn't look like much support, I can get this phone pretty cheap but I'm not sure as the support just doesn't seem to be here. Anyone with this phone got any advice? Look elsewhere or buy it?

I recently switched to the G4 (H811) from the S6 Edge back in October. I would consider it a good upgrade. The official CM updates are already rolled out and I've been using it as a daily driver even through the buggy (not complaining) Alpha and Beta stages. As a lot of other users have already stated, most of us considered the stock ROM good enough, especially with Marshmallow rolling out pretty soon. The only reason I switched to CM 12.1 was for the near stock look and the lag in the stock ROM. I've heard good things about the CTT MOD, eliminating lag involving thermal throttling. I used MicroMod777's debloated stock ROM. It ran smoother than stock in my experience. I'll be happy to answer anymore questions you have, given my experience with the device.

Thanks a lot. I really like this phone however I don't like stock. I am happy with CM12 though as it has all the features I use. How stable is CM? Are the bugs ironed out now? How is battery life and heat issues? What type of lag is it? Scrolling lag or gaming? I saw the mod but didn't read too much into it, also is over clocking an option via kernels?

CM is pretty stable so far, good enough for a daily driver. Trebuchet crashes every now and then and I've noticed some issues with the camera (besides the actual camera app, that's just AOSP camera in general). I'm not complaining, nor rushing the devs, but it's easily usable as a daily driver. To sum it up, bugs are present, but not bad. Battery life is iffy, I can get through an entire day with 2 batteries and sometimes a charge. I'd say it's around 3 hours SOT. Heat issues are way worse on the stock ROM, nothing too bad so far on CM. Lag on CM is little things like scrolling or keyboard animations, and apps crashing now and then. I haven't tried much gaming. Over clocking is possible.

if you guys use CM custom rom, which app use for camera? is the CM camera apps as good as stock to use all features of the G4 camera? or you don't care about photos, you just need other features covered by CM rom?

I think the issue is because of the bootloader and the fact that there are only 2 variants which is can be unlocked on.
I know CandySix is coming to the G4 though :good:

The other features are worth losing the camera. It's still great for regular pictures but don't expect a DSLR replacement. They're still working on getting the G4 Camera ported to the ROM.

you can use other 3rd party camera apps but you lose some features like night shot which is used by front camera as well.
also shutter time will not be more than 0.5s, stock goes up to 30s.
Its not clear to me how CM will make use of the colour sensor and laser AF. Are shots as quick to take, are they as clear.
Low light on auto ? this is buggy right now from the few samples i saw.
Whether unlocking bootloader automatically disables these features is not clear. Because if it does then its a one way process. You lose it forever.

You get 3h sot on cm or stock ?
regardless you should be getting more, on stock.
3-4h on data, 4-5h on wifi. If your brightness is 25% you can add an extra hour in there. This is normal with stock and greenify.
If you can't get that then you need a reset.
I've seen very little to no benefits accruing to battery life by rooting, roms or exposed. if you must go down that route its about features.

3h SOT on CM, less on stock. That's with greenify and screen at around 30% brightness. I'm not going to complain to CM development for those numbers, but I'll try one of the debloated stock ROMs and report back after a few days. Thanks for the advice.

Looks like a ghost town to me. Compare that forum to the equivalent G3 forum, even at the current date in 2014, and it was way more lively.
With every passing day it looks more and more like the G4 has been abandoned. I guess you can't blame the devs, LG are being pricks about the bootloader.

Pretty clear there is not much to choose from and even then they seem to have bugs. This was a genuine question no need to be cocky although I'm sure it makes you feel superior.

Thanks a lot guys, it was basically a choice between the G4 or a Sony Z5 both have little support, obviously the Z5 has only just been released so it's to be expected. I'm just a little disappointed as the G4 seemed so perfect for me hardware wise vs price, plus the fact the G4 uses the 808 as opposed to the 810 which has overheating problems. The Moto X pure is looking like a possibility for this reason now. I tend to keep my phones fairly long so I need something quite stable. I think I will hold off for now until support for the phones I'm interested in grows, unless I see something really cheap in the black Friday sales

I'm in the exact same boat man, G4 looks like the perfect phone in terms of hardware but the software situation is just depressing. We'll see how things pan out once Marshmallow has made it to all G4s, but if thing don't pick up I'll have to look elsewhere.

The Moto X pure has very similar hardware to the G4, if it's within your budget I'd suggest looking there once the phone has been out awhile and gained support.

What's is your usage like ? if its heavy then i don't think you can do better.

debloated if you have a carrier rom, its not necessary otherwise.
How long you had the device ?
People that can't get beyond 3h sot need a reset. something is running more than it needs to. a reset fixes it. dont just do a plain restore after, install apps in small batches and monitor.

Heavy usage. I got better in CM than stock. I've had the T-Mobile G4 since around late September. And yes, I need the debloated ROM because my stock H811 ROM is the carrier one. I've also noticed less lag on it with animations, particularly the keyboard pop-up ones.

Ah, then 3-4hrs of sot is normal.
was testing with youtube and speakers on max. 1 hr of youtube eats up around 27%. 3hrs of youtube like that and its recharge time.
With bluetooth it drops to 20%. Must be some more savings with wired speakers.
with screen off and just podcasts its 10%/hour.
So far the heaviest usage is recoding with 4k. Do that for 90 minutes and the battery is flat.
I got better in CM than stock. I've had the T-Mobile G4 since around late September. And yes, I need the debloated ROM because my stock H811 ROM is the carrier one. I've also noticed less lag on it with animations, particularly the keyboard pop-up ones.

I'm actually not sure, I'm almost always using it. It drains around 10% over night (about 7 hours) if I forget to plug it in. That's on the CM ROM.

Bootloader is still annyoing to unlock for most models/ not possible, also this phone has so many different models.
On top of that we got from Lolipop to MM quite fast which may also be a reason for the lack of roms.
If I'd be a Dev I'd rather not put too much effort in Lolipop roms for the G4 if MM is right around the corner.
Dunno maybe it will get better now

New phone where to start?

Hi folks, I purchase a LG Nexux 5X and will arrive soon and was wondering where should I start modding it.
I have done several mods in other phones and on the gear 2 neo, so I know how to use odin and some adb functions.
I usually don't tamper with a new phone unless it is really slow or annoying me with some bug, but would like to know if there are some minor tweaks I can begin to tinker with that will enhance my overall experience with this phone.

Getting my Nexus 5X tomorrow but currently use a Nexus 5. With any Nexus you want to start off with setting up the Android SDK and all the Nexus drivers on your computer so if something does go south, you are ready to fix it with the factory images. The first thing I am going to do with mine is put Android N on it since I haven't had the chance to try it yet. Then root and most likely be happy with that for a while. Since Android N will probably be officially released soon, I'm sure that's when a lot of stuff will start happening around here. Hopefully Xposed will get updated to work with it. If so, that will be my setup. Stock, rooted and Xposed. That's basically what I have been running on my Nexus 5 for a while now. But if you want to try out custom ROMs, there are those too.

Thanks for your reply. good advice to save the original rom image! I will probably root too, because I usually OC my phones hopefully that won't be so much a hassle.

If I were you, I wouldn't OC at all. Snapdragon 800 series likes to overheat and throttle itself, making it slower than usual.

I have the N5X for several months.
I previously had the N4, N5, and OnePlus One (still have it, wife uses it).
I used stock, I used to flash ROMs at least twice a week minimum (same on the other devices). Various ROMs, to test their performance, their tweaks, their perks, their battery life... you name it.
However, flashing ROMs and trying out various mods feels very much like living on the road with your backpack on, rather than staying at home and having a steady job. Because while flashing ROMs, you don't always re-install all the things you had (Even if you backup with Titanium Backup, as some things don't survive data restore very well). Last week I made the decision to go stock and stay stock (well, not really, I went stock Android N Preview 5, which will receive OTA to full Nugget in about a month).
I have to tell you... I don't quite feel any difference other than losing a feature or two. Speed is still great; snappiness is snappy, no bugs and no issues. It feels great even though its encypted (by default), while all this time I was certain being un-unecrypted made the device any snappier; that was just a placebo I guess.
So yeah, you can go ahead and flash a custom ROM (or many of them!), but don't do it for improved performance. Stock performance is truly awesome, and while some ROMs make it better, for sure - it's not THAT better, not in any noticeable way. Do it for features, do it for fun, do it for curiosity, DO IT! But just know the simple truth that Stock Android 6 and definitely 7 are so good and bug-less, that there is no need to get customized to resolve any bugs or performance issues; there are none.

Agree. I used to root and ROM the crap out of phones but with the 5X I've stayed stock. Yeah, I see more ads now and miss Viper4Android but I spend no time F-ing with the phone and all the time just using it. No gyrations to go though to install monthly security updates or trying to get banking apps to work with root (like Android pay). Try it stock for a while.

I was reading that thermal problem post, it does present an issue to me because when I ride a bike I usually have the phone on the handle in a rubber case exposed to the sun and the heat that can easily reach over 35°. Thanks for the heads up.

I hear you, I have prolonged the life of my smartphones more than it should, by tweaking and using customs roms. I have had only 2 other SP in the spam of 6 years and had never had to be subject to a phone/data plan. I just ride the wifis signal or pay per use the 3g signal. Even-thought this LG is not a big inversion in itself, I hope I can squeeze several years of it and the old practice of using custom roms, seems kind of pointless or not worth the trouble considering as you say the stock is as good.

Would there be an interest in an AOSP/stock Google based rom?

I've been thinking about building an S7 ROM, and I've done some work on it, but right now, my interest is more focused in development for the 6P. However, if there's enough interest for a stock based ROM for the active, I'll go ahead and start working on it.
My basic idea was to try to totally port an AOSP/Stock Google ROM (most likely from the 6p) over to the active. There's no trace of anything Samsung in the ROM, and later on I could add some more useful features. I also plan on adding about as many performance/battery tweaks as I can find. Unfortunately, the kernel can't be modified, I've already tested some stuff with that, and nothing worked. But I would intend on making a non-root version with the stock kernel, and a root version with the eng kernel.
The goal of this rom is to try to provide a totally stock experience on the front end (because the kernel can't be modified), for those who hate Samsung and/or Samsung's UI. The stock experience should result in much better performance and battery life, and I will incorporate as many tweaks as I can to improve it even more.
So vote on the poll/leave a reply if you would like to see this for the active, and if you have any features you would want to see in a rom, reply saying what you would like.

Yeah, that would be awesome if possible. I've been holding off on rooting but something like this would have me rooting my phone immediately.

I would love for a ROM like that to be made for my Active. I actually hate using TouchWiz. I find myself using my old S5 when I am at home.
Phone would be so awesome if it ran on AOSP OS (aside from the green and pink vertical line I now have on my phone from no where, thanks Samsung).

you can kinda get this already with my Ufirm mod .. select Playstore debloat, and it strips everything out ..
so you need to select the pixel launcher, or nova launcher, along with the google apps like messenger, calendar/clock etc other wise you wont have nowt to use !
but thats just stripping down the original Rom to suit ..

are you able to tell if the kernel is blocking Gear VR ??? been trying to find out whats blocking detection of it ... as there seems to be NO logcat action atall .. so im thinking kernel ?

I would also like to see multiple CSC's integrated from which user can choose his country specific network and volte settings.

No matter what you do VOLTE is will not work on this device in India. Also most AOSP based roms dont support VOLTE at least not for India.

No because the volte in India uses a completely different code setup. Each carrier has their own code for it. This is why aosp doesn't support volte for the most part. Even when they get it working it doesn't work on all carriers.

Hmm, quite a conundrum. no issue, even without volte, an AOSP still has it's benefits.

For many devices i would agree. Not for Samsung devices and deffently not this device. Not when you consider you lose the use of all the extra sensors and camera quility

I appreciate the offer but I don't think I'd use it. I've never had a good experience with a non-stock ROM (where stock to me means the ROM that came with the phone). Many worked okay, but they tend to be buggy so any benefits are outweighed by the instability or lost features. I'm also used to the Samsung UI by now so don't feel like I'm missing anything (even though I probably am).

Yes I am also now pretty used to stock rom. Can flashing stock rom through odin with csc changed to Indian S7 variants' csc image work for Indian volte support ?

I would love to see a new ROM. Hopefully the battery life can be better than stock Samsung TouchWiz. Any ETAs?

ETA is as soon as you get it done. But to be honest you can give it up. No bootloader unlock and no root so you will have to deal with stock.
Also never and I mean never ask for an ETA it is rude and on XDA will get you flamed and ignored.

Would it be possible to have stable custom ROMs once Oreo is launched ?

Locked bootloader, no custom recoveries or roms. The cell phone companies pay big bux to have them locked and thats it, so dig a hole in a random park and bury the idea and move on.. On LG phones that i had before, AOSP roms really brought the phone to its toes, battery was horrible, overheating, lots and lots of crashes, just a total nightmare. Custom roms are great for tablets where you dont have to worry about cell service unless its a data tab then good luck. Best bet, if the phone can be rooted, freeze, dont delete all the bloatware and its gonna work great.
Cell phones these days are just like cars, they come with useless apps just like some cars come with ugly steering wheels with bunch of buttons that you will never use..

Althou there has been break throughs, and you can now get twrp working with locked bootloaders...
It's not the big win win, and even then, aosp would be much worse than a debloated stock....
I'm am now starting to see light at end of my tunnel, to work more on starting this stuff ported to our phones!

Custom ROM for improving battery life and phone expérience.

Hello all !
I recently buy an samsung galaxy s9, I love it because of his size, today all manufacturers are racing for the biggest screen diagonal, but forget about the people who like compact phones.
the only thing I don't like is that the battery doesn't really last. I use some social networks like instagram or whatsapp to chat and the battery is not consistent enough for me, I think. (I uninstalled the bloatware app and made a maximum of optimization).
So I'm thinking about the solution of installing a custom rom. I'm doing some research and I like the pixel experience or the lineageOS.
The reason of my post is to ask you, you who know much better than me, is it really going to increase the duration of use?
Do you have any advice on this ? I read that you have to calibrate the battery after installing a rom but maybe you have other advice, a rom in particular, settings to do ?

Well I have a galaxy S9(5.8" size) and it's running NezukoOS with android 11. Pretty fluid and with light use I can get it to last me all day long, however I turn it off during night. If you really want more battery life, you should considerer using a custom kernel, as that is what is really going to improve battery life. The custom ROM will bring new features and make your phone feel different, but it usually doesn't improves battery life(at least the ones I tried out didn't help battery at all).

And another question to NezukoOS or general AOSP roms.. can you unlock the device by pressing the 'invisible' home button on the screen? Is this option still available in these roms?

I used Nezuko Os and Yes the invisible home button was working for me.. But i switch now from nezuko back to the stock ffirmware cause i love the one ui design etc..

Well I never used a custom kernel as I didn't had any problems with battery life, but I do know a ROM which comes with a modded kernel. It's call Noble ROM, and brings ONE UI 3 with android 11 to the galaxy S9. I tried it out and it works pretty good, and when you install it you have a modded kernel that will ask you if you want to improve performance or battery life, here is the link if you are interested on it https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...-03-2021-sm-n960f-fd-n-sm-g96xf-fd-n.4244747/ However if you prefer the stock Android I can't really help you, but for sure there are a lot of kernels on XDA forums, you just need to search one.

I also tried noble Rome, but every time it was very laggy and the interior assistant almost always crashed. I had to restart my device very often. My phone had also overheated and I uninstalled it again. no matter how often I did a reflash it was always laggy as described above

Oh yeah that's bad. My phone also overheated when I tried it however I thought it could be because I overclock it's CPU. My main problem was the camera didn't work almost all times and I needed to restart the phone continuously, so I went back to NezukoOS.
I also liked ONE UI however I don't know if that happened to you but my phone was very slow on ONE UI and animations almost all times were very laggy. That's why I start using AOSP, and also because I really like the new features.

I am also considering whether I should stay with aosp or go back to the sttock firmware. Both have advantages and disadvantages

I don't bo back because of various reasons. First and more important, it's starting to be obsolete and Android 12 is going to be released in August I think, which makes android 10 be 2 years old. Also this customs ROMs give a lot of features that I don't find on the original ONE UI, like caffeine. Finally, performance. My phone was slow and laggy on stock firmware but now its super fast, as if it was brand new. Hope this help you decide.

What do you think about arrow os? I am undetermined which one i should give a try. I prefer a very clean and hardly debloated os.

No problem! Glad to know that this is useful.
I tried Arrow OS however I used it only for 2 days. The ROM was good and seem to be stable however it didn't have a function which for me was crucial, smart charging (charges your phone only to 80% to slow down its degradation) so I went back to NezukoOS. Arrow OS and AOSP are in general don't have bloatware and useless applications preinstalled however if you don't want a lot of features PixelExpirience(not the plus version) is going to be good for you. It's simple, very smooth and almost identical to a Google Pixel experience. LineageOS and ArrowOS however have more features built-in.
