VS986 in trouble /solved - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Good day everyone!
I have LG G4 VS986 UsU /e/. I took apart and looked at the motherboard - VS986. But my camera hasn't worked for a long time. I tried all the firmwares for USU'd vs986, and the camera did not work on one of them. So I decided to try installing the stock firmware (maybe the camera will work on it).
In general, I started the firmware process, according to this instruction:
[UNLOCK][UNOFFICIAL][G4] Unlock ANY* LG G4 device with UsU
Spoiler: FAQ 28)b)
1. extract with SALT system + boot + modem partition of the stock ROM kdz of your choice (I took this one: VS9862BA_00_0525_ARB02.kdz)
2. flash them in fastboot:
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash modem modem.img
3. boot TWRP (if you do not get into TWRP at the first try it gets overwritten. if that happens you must re-flash TWRP in fastboot) - here i am stuck!
4. flash the baseband package of your model
5. factory reset in TWRP (obviously all your data will be lost - so backup before)
6. if you encounter issues FORMAT data in TWRP (obviously all your data will be lost - so backup before)
But got stuck at point 3. The phone cannot boot into TWRP and FASTBOOT, but it can into DOWNLOAD MODE. Does anyone have any options on what to do next and how to fix it?

When booting into android you can use adb to reboot into fastboot with: adb reboot bootloader
...but the above procedure has to work in any case

That was the point - Android did not boot completely (showed the installation of applications 1-33, and then rebooted and showed the splash screen).
I was able to start Android later:
I typed it, - I held down all three buttons (volume + and -, and the on / off button) - and licked out the menu with the proposal to format the data and answers "yes" and "no". After formatting, Android is fully loaded!
Alas, the camera still doesn't work. And now, when I booted through adb to Fastboot and flashed TWRP, I cannot enter the Recovery menu! Tried to go through the Fastboot command: fastboot reboot recovery; and pressing the buttons doesn't work either. The phone just boots into the system. Are there any ways how to get the Recovery back?

the process to enter fastboot works. 100%. maybe your volume button is not working properly.
yes you have to format data when you flash a new ROM. that is the case always when switching between ROMs - and stock is just another ROM so here you need to do that as well ofc.
fastboot reboot recovery does not work here. you have to use the key combo and if that does not work for recovery as well you likely have an issue with your hardware buttons. after flashing TWRP you have to boot directly into it otherwise it will be overwritten on boot. so adb reboot recovery won't work either. last but not least fastboot boot does not work when UsU'd.
so. first of all fix you volume button. maybe disassemble the back cover and see if you see dust/dirt anywhere near the volume button. try pressing the vol down button harder when trying to get into recovery.
if all that does not help and you cannot fix the button problem you could ofc flash TWRP in fastboot to both: the recovery AND the boot (!) partition. Then you can reboot and it will directly load TWRP. here choose reboot-> recovery to be in the correct slot. last you push the boot image from the stock ROM to the device and in TWRP press install (switch to "img"), select the boot image and choose "boot" as target. now you can reboot and TWRP should be still there. but honestly.. fix your volume button

You were right. The volume button "-" was not quite functional.
I thank you, steadfasterX, for your support. Thanks for the advice. All the best to you!

Hopefully someone can help me out of this,
Thanks in advance,

Setup adb/fastboot.
Download the 4ext recovery img:
http://www.4ext.net/ddl/bravo/recovery.zip (extract the zip), and put it in the platform-tools folder of where your android sdk is.
Boot the phone into fastboot (hold power and back), then use this command:
Code:
fastboot boot recovery.img
Once your in recovery do a full wipe and flash a ROM.

It needs to be recognized by fastboot not adb. Download and install HTC sync then uninstall it leaving only the drivers behind. Also install these: http://downloads.unrevoked.com/HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe
Then boot the phone into fastboot mode (power and back) and run "fastboot devices" to see if it's recognized. If it is follow the instructions in my first post.

Yeah, it's working, thanks a lot!
I tried to boot with "back + Power" several times.... but without USB connected...
EDIT: No, it wasn't regarding USB...
This only works from time to time, more less then more.. (hopefully you know what I mean)
Okay, now I have a way to get into the recovery, a big step forward!!
What now?
I'd like to "install" this recovery now, as I did before on my HD2 in the past but this is far long ago, so sorry for this stupid question:
How to replace the actual existing Recovery with the booted 4ext one?
On 4ext.net I found a way with a booted rom, but without...
Later on, I'd like to flash CyanogenMod 7, so I already downloaded the suggested PB99img_cm7r2.zip.
I remember this has s.th. to do regarding partitioning, right? What do I have to do with this file?
Can I flash this with fastboot ?
During usual bootloader startup it says "No image or wrong size"
AS you may see, I know a little, but it's damned long ago...
Sorry for my worse english, but I don't know how to describe this better
Hopefully you can help me anyway,
Thanks a lot in advance!!

Use "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" to fully install the recovery. Rename the hboot(partition) file you downloaded to "PB99IMG.zip" and put it on the root of your SD card. Boot the phone into hboot and it will search for the file. When it finds it select yes to install it then reboot.
Go into recovery and wipe everything except the SD card then flash the ROM.

Hi,
thanks a lot for these great hints, but sadly I'm unable since yesterday to enter fastboot mode
System always starts into HBOOT - and dies, weather I press any additional keys to the power button or not...
Any alternative way to enter fastboot mode?

I know and this worked yesterday, but it started with problems, as mentioned above.
Today I never had access..

Fastbooting android whose recovery is not opening.

While trying to root my redmi 1s, i accidentally pressed a wrong button due to which it seemed like if recovery is no longer functioning.
The mobile is getting struck at mi logo and is not proceeding forward.
Pressing volume down+power button successfully opens fastboot screen. Earlier when I was connecting it to mi suite on pc, i was able to flash. But due to incomplete charged battery, flashing procedure stopped. After the recent windows update, mi pc suite is recognizing the android but is not able to flash it. It pops out a dialogue box saying "cant flash the device". Any idea what can i do now?

Flashing twrp is done by fastboot using adb tools. First install the USB drivers of your phone. You can simply google them. Then go to this link https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B_43Fi9T_yqvUy1jOWk0cnJyZEk
and download the four files in the adb folder. Now download the latest twrp image i.e, twrp 3.0.0-0 from this link
https://dl.twrp.me/armani/
keep the adb tools i.e, the four files you had downloaded and the twrp image in the same folder. Rename the twrp 3.0.0-0 to recovery.img. Now hold shift key and press right click on your mouse. From there select open command window here. Now open fastboot and connect your phone through Usb and type this code
Code:
fastboot devices
This is to check wheather your device is connected or not. If it's connected then it will show some code. After that type this code
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
That's it twrp will be flashed right away. Then you can flash MIUI or any other custom rom.
Thank you

A big thank you. I owe you for helping out. By the way after installing recovery I tried downloading rom(both armani which was earlier working and miui official). The script gets sideloaded successfully but again the operating system is not loading. ie mobile is still struck in bootloader

FP4 stucks after unlock the bootloader

Hello together,
today i tried to install /e/ OS on my new FP4.
I did everything like in the official description:
> ## Unlocking the bootloader
>
> 1. Boot the device
> 2. Enable and connect Wifi
> 3. Enable Developer options
> 4. From developer options, enable OEM unlock
> * Get the unlock code from [this site](https://www.fairphone.com/en/bootloader-unlocking-code-for-fairphone-3/) and enter it
> 5. Reboot on fastboot by running the command in the PC console `adb reboot bootloader`
>
> 6.*Tip:** All the console commands are run on an adb enabled PC and in the `adb` console.
>
> 7. Ask for unlock with `fastboot flashing unlock`
> 8. Approve with <kbd>volume +</kbd> then <kbd>power</kbd>
> * The device proceed with a factory reset, and automatically reboots
At 8 i maybe made a mistake, when you are in the fastboot mode, you can choose different options, i choosed something like FFBM or something like this. Then the device restarted and since that it always shows the "blue dots" like in the beginning but nothing more happens, since hours.
I turned it off and on again, without success.
I can not load the fastboot again via ADB, because the device is not recognized.
If i try to use the volumeUP or VolumeDOWN at the startup, nothing happens and it restarts again after a few seconds.
So there is no way for me to enter the fastboot mode again.
So I have two questions to you, lovely community.
One is, can anybody help me?
Second, can somebody tell me how the different options are called in the fastboot mode, so i can google it and do more research.
THANKS a lot and sorry for my english :slight_sm
Hi,
Are you able to launch the stock rom or are u stuck on bootloop or bootloader page ?
If you can launch the stock rom, enable oem, debugging and unlock bootloader in developper options.
Then connect phone to pc with the cable and type adb devices
see if the phone is recopgnized.
Then adb reboot bootloader and do all steps of the official guide.
If you use Windows I suggest you to put all file to your adb folder, type CD /path/to/folder/
And copy paste all commands at once, this will avoid error of mishandling during fastboot operations.
If you stuck on a "waiting for phone" when you are in fastboot mode, check you driver, or test with a linux machine or see Hulk's solution here
If you stuck on a bootloop just use the key combo to enter bootloader. check on the bootloader is everything is ok (unlock) if not redone steps to unlock bootloader, then flash recovery from /e/ os folder fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Then enter in recovery use the combo key to have the menu choice between bootloader, recovery... then enter recovery and wipe data...
Then restart the official guide of /e/ os.
You may ask on /e/ os forum too many much more Fairphone user are there and can help you (link i gave you above).

Hello,
thanks for your reply.
I posted the same comment at the /E/ OS Forum as well.

I can not enter anything else, using ADB is not possible because the device is not recognized and the combination of volumeUP and power or volumeDOWN and power only restarts the device.
Do you have a FP4 and you maybe can tell me which options in the top of the fastboot menu you can choose?
Something like reboot and so on.
I will try the solution in your link in a few hours when i have more time.
Thanks a lot and BR
Bootloader menu options are "start / restart bootloader / recovery mode / power off / boot in ffbm / boot to qmmi"
I don't understand your problem if your bootloader is unlock you must have accesss to bootloader.
Are you sure you didn't relock bootloader before checking the rom is correctly installed ?
Contact /e/ support to have the precise combo key to enter bootloader. sometimes it change from phone to phone.
Does your computer works well with adb and fastboot before ? did you already flash rom ? Maybe a driver is missing or adb/fastboot is not on the last version. You may try with a linux pc to aovid those problem.
From /e/ Os website : https://doc.e.foundation/devices/FP4/install
How to Boot into bootloader mode
This section will be relevant later throughout the guide, when you need to reboot into bootloader mode.
Remove any USB-C cable and turn off your Fairphone 4
Tip: If you cannot turn your device off, remove the battery for about 5 seconds, then put it back in.
Press and hold the Volume Down button.
Insert a USB-C cable connected to the power (can either be a power outlet or a computer).
Release the Volume Down button as soon you boot into bootloader mode
For more details on how to erase the data on your FP4 refer this guide
I just try this and works great : power off the phone (if you can't just remove battery as said), press vol down and plug the usb cable
My phone has the bootloader locked and flashing locked and it works. try this
You are my hero.
I dont know how many times i read that but i was to stupid to do that correctly.
Now i tried it again and it worked well!
Thanks a lot!
Problem solved.
Just for other idiots like me, i choosed the option boot into ffbm into the bootloader menu, this was my mistake.

when I type Fastboot devices my Phone is not regionized what should I do?

Normally PC does not find your device as MTP device while you Hold POWER+home+volumeDown button(I mean fastboot mode without phone bootup).Coz it Shows device as MTP device after Phone bootedup(online).Maybe you tried install its driver as MTP by chosing manual install ? first download and install real usb driver(Adb&fastboot driver) of your samsung phone. https://developer.samsung.com/android-usb-driver then install it. then replug ur phone. Then go Device Manager of your PC,then replug your usb cable, and if you see New Device found like "unknow device or fastboot" then click them then click Properties on it, then click Update driver then click browse for Driver then click Let me pick from list then UNCHECK(unclick) "Show compatible hardware" then find your SAMSUNG ADB driver(if u cant see then click PORTS maybe it installed under Ports drivers) then click next to update it as Fastboot driver . but You can change your PC language to English for See same words in your Pc menus for I help you better coz im not German . but if already your secreen opens ? then you need go phone Settings / about phone/ Tap your phone Firm version 10 times and enable developer menu then enable USB ADB debug for install adb driver easily.if your phone screen not showing anything on screen . then you must just do fastboot mode by fastboot mode keys for install fastboot(samsung android usb driver or ADB driver another name)
When I am in the recovery mode then I see the MTP Window. When I am in the Download Mode I see the other window. I don't now waht the fastboot mode is.

Ignore what the other guy said above, fastboot is not a thing on Samsung phones. You can make it work with some patches however, but by default there is no fastboot.
ok can you tell me in detail so what do you think is the problem and wehre can I find these patches

Did you follow all the steps on the XDA thread?

There should be no issues if properly following the XDA thread's instructions.

Thank you for remaining me this option I forgot about it, but I installed a custom Rom, but I'd like to run again on the original software can I install it again. If not, it doesn't matter, but it would be better.
The Rom won't start, the start sign appears but doesn't finish loading.

Stuck in Fastboot. Can't boot to anything except fastboot. Flashing stock ROM does not help.

Hello everyone.
Wifes Redmi Note 8 Pro (begonia) is stuck in fastboot. I have tried to flashing stock rom (many different versions) using MiFlash (have tried two different versions of MiFlash) and phone still stuck in pure fastboot. When I restart it, then it go straight to fastboot.
I have tried to flash custom recovery - TWRP (many different versions), but can't boot into it. Commands like "fastboot reboot recovery" or "fastboot boot twrp.img" does nothing - it restart, but again go straight into fastboot.
Commands like "fastboot flash recovery twrp.img" success, but can't boot to recovery.
Phone is unlocked and all flashing ends with SUCCESS message.
Have also tried flashing using SP FlashTool as it's in this video
it also ends with SUCCESS message, but phone is still stuck in fastboot screen only. Tried to flash it with battery, without battery, but it had no difference.
This stuck happened, after official MIUI freezed and none of hardware buttons worked. Battery died, phone went off. Then I have powered it and then this pure fastboot happened.. I have checked hardware buttons, but they works correctly.
Spoiler: Some screenshots..

Try to press Volume down hard for 50 times. Then try to throw from high to the pilow/blanket many times. It's usually a hardware problem (Volume down got stuck). If they can't get help, you can try flash Engineer rom to test.

I have tried to replace hardware buttons from another device. Problem is still here.
Made the experience that USB cables can be faulty. You can charge the phone with this cable. But you can't establish a working data connection with this cable. Sometimes it looks like it works, but it doesn't really ... you have weird behaviour. Therefore it is always a good idea to have many USB cables to switch.
Suggestion:
At first get Google's up-to-date ADB and fastboot: Linux or Windows.
Then get the latest TWRP recovery for begonia.
Then boot your device to bootloader mode.
Now try the boot-option within fastboot:
fastboot boot <twrp-recovery>.img
(Maybe try different USB-cables if this fails)
Now you can install/update TWRP within this booted TWRP instance
--> switch to install image and choose the recovery partition to install it.

Have tried two different cables. Fastboot boot recovery.img says success, but it loads back to fastboot.

You really updated your fastboot?
Maybe try a different USB-port --> USB-ports on the back of your PC should works best.
The ones on the front plate of your PC are sometimes not satisfying!
And try another USB-cable (lend one from a friend).

Good to know, saw some with these kind of problems. Some can get out by engineer rom and some not. You're one of the lucky guy
Are you still facing the issue ???
Sorry for my bad English!!
I'm a Mobile technician, and this method work for me!!
I have tried this with my Redmi k20 !!
It's a lengthy process !! But it will help you !!
1)- Extract the Fastboot rom
2)- copy adb files from your adb/ platform tools folder and copy it into the extracted Fastboot rom folder !
3)- open ' images ' folder from extracted rom
4)- connect your device
5) open cmd in images folder ( shift+ right click- open command window here)
6) type in cmd :-
fastboot devices
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
( Wait for some time - 5 min atleast )
fastboot flash vendor vendor.img
( Wait for 3-5 min )
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot flash vbmeta vbmeta.img
fastboot flash userdata userdata.img
fastboot reboot
7) your phone will automatically restart
( But still there will be no recovery or full rom..but it will just restart to miui- setup page )
8) again connect your phone in fastboot
9) open extracted Fastboot rom folder
10) run as administrator (or double tap ) the file -
" flash all.bat "
11) wait and watch --- it will take around 15 mins
12) your phone will automatically restarts
13) check the stock recovery is appeard or not ( it will definitely show the recovery )
14) done !! Enjoy
