That didn't work already tried ended up having to do the commands
Fastboot oem unlock
Fastboot --set-active=2
Then reboot into recovery wiped all data

If you can enter fastboot, flash latest twrp recovery, nuke everything and sideload a rom/put a rom in external sd and flash from there... Should work...

Hold down the power button and the vol. up button for 20 seconds or so.
As soon as it goes dead, switch from vol. up to vol. down.
Fastboot is where you are now.

hi! well, to flash recovery it's plenty of tutorial around, and you can look on twrp official site too... to delete everything, just select full wipe in recovery and to sideload follow this guide http://teamw.in/ADBSideload

this is the basic instructions

fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.8.1.0-m8.img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot-bootloader
then sideload this Rom to your phone
http://www.renovaterom.co.uk/OneM8/ROMs/Renovate_4.5.0.zip
TWRP / Advanced / ADB Sideload - swipe to sideload
From PC adb / fastboot folder
you use
adb sideload Renovate_4.5.0.zip
make sure the rom is in the same folder as adb / fastboot

Re-Locked Bootloader (i think?)

Today i did something very silly and used the Asus Flash tool to flash what i thought was the correct raw image for my ZE551ML (to try and re-lock the bootloader), it turned out that I in fact flashed the ZE550ML raw file by mistake !!! Upside is that the only difference i saw was the change in screen resolution and no harm seems to have been done to my phone.
I have now found a ZE551ML raw file and flashed that to my device and it seems to have worked and re-locked the bootloader.
The boot screen is now black again, but is there any other way to test or find out if it is indeed re-locked?

any custom recovery can not be flashed if bootloader is lock.
recovery was installed means bootloader is unlocked.

You can run a tethered TWRP without unlocking.

That was likely the "tethered" recovery then. Try the untethered, but of course skip the part where you unlock the bootloader. In short:
reboot into bootloader
fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
reboot into recovery (press volume down twice until "Reboot recovery" shows up, then press power button)
If that boots into TWRP I suppose the bootloader is still unlocked. It may not be the easiest, but it should give you an answer.

Seems bootloader is still unlocked.... TWRP untethered stuck so back to the drawing board lol..
I would love to know what the process for unlocking does when the terminal commands are processed. I have a spare ZF2 with a broken screen that I can experiment with so no great loss if I trash it...
Any recommendations for reading... or do I need to maybe learn a bit of code?
I saw a method on here somewhere where a couple of files are flashed from the ifwi.zip file found in stock rom (I think that is a method used in another zenfone variant .... The 5 or 4.) which re locks the bootloader.
Doesn't work on the ZF2 though....

Remove lock screen security and set it to swipe. Then boot into twrp a couple of times. If it starts working, then add your security back in.

Happy to help my friend :good:
After helping one of my friends troubleshoot this on his pixel 2 xl we came to the conclusion that twrp doesnt seem to like the phone having a saved fingerprint either. disabling the fingerprint and keeping the password works. we havent tried turning it back on after the first decrypt though, will post after further testing

so during our initial testing we had two fingerprints which seemed to upset twrp. after a successful decrypt we added one single fingerprint and now it decrypts properly
I'm getting this suddenly even though I deleted pin and fingerprints. Maybe I need to return to stock recovery again somehow? Then flash twrp all over again. Anybody know where to get stock recovery?

Sorry, yeah I ran fastboot flash boot boot.img, do I need to boot it like the 1st step of installing TWRP? The android symbol with the red triangle and 'no command' is what I get after trying to enter recovery after flashing stock boot (to verify stock recovery was back). I don't see stock recovery though, shows that no command and Droid red triangle instead. I'm still critical unlocked from when I fastboot flashed factory image yesterday.

Ah, now I understand. The droid dude in surgery, is the stock recovery. You have to hold power button and volume up simultaneously a couple seconds, then release volume up. It's a little tricky though. You can just fastboot twrp now if you'd like.

So turns out the problem both before and just now when I tried flashing twrp and it was still frozen.... I forgot to flash magisk after flashing the twrp installer zip :crying::crying: It was trying to run TWRP on an unrooted system. Doh! I booted twrp a 3rd time, flashed twrp installer AND magisk. Now all is working fine.
It's the little things that always mess me up

Badger50, you've been a great help and I hope you can come thru again for me. Maybe I'm missing something but I just finished updating my Pixel 2 XL to the June update and went to boot TWRP so I can flash Magisk and install TWRP but I get to the teamwin recovery project 3.2.1-2 splash screen and it's just frozen. I never got to flash anything. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Default recovery.img

I have a moto z2 force that wouldn't boot up after the newest pie update. I managed to get it working by flashing the files in fastboot but now seem to not have a recovery. Does anyone have a stock recovery .img I could get to flash? It would be much appreciated.
It also goes directly to the bootloader upon bootup. It doesn't boot to the main OS until I press start. But it does boot up and works so far after i do that.
This is the Verizon variant.

PHP:

As far as recovery, what makes you think you don't have a recovery?
