I have a problem with my rooted One X that on close up objects the camera can not focus on the subject, this makes barcode scanner apps useless they simply do not work anymore,
Camera shots at normal distance focus properly
Any help?
I get the same problem. The camera gets a sharp picture, then refocuses, gets a sharp pic.. refocuses!
It never sets itself & stays on the sharp picture.. always trys again!
Very frustrating.

This seems to do something it certainly makes it better , still nit great though
@Op,
This is actualy normal.
Every lens has a minimal distance it still can autofocus.

Not true all my other phones focus much better than this . When I first git phone it worked .even my friends cheap huwaei focuses better on near objects . Something is broken
Not true?
I do have some experience with photography, like I said every lens has a minimal distance for autofocus.
You can read that in every manual of a new lens.
It's called 'min. focus distance'

Sorry i replied on my ohone and autospell failed! The phone USE to focus on the barcodes perfectly fone but now it does not!
My other phones can focus on these barcodes fine but now my ONE X does not
I have noticed, that HOX is almost never focusing on close object (even 20cm from the lens) if there is a distant background. Touch to focus or macro mode doesn't help. Try to make macro shot of the flower while the window view will be your background.

But the barcode apps dont offer the possibility for digital zoom
focus problem
I have the same problem, i used to have a sensation XE just prior to my One X and the short distance focusing was about 7 - 8 cm or even less sometimes. the one x is nowhere near this distance and overall quality (as opposed as to what was advertised) is not extraordinary
i made a topic about this months ago but everyone's against it.
The HOX have much longer min focus distance, i'm disappointed because this has a f2.0 lens but it cant focus as near as my XL with f2.2 lens so the bokeh in macro shot is much much smaller even when compare to the XE f2.8, and alot of image compression which degrade the quality ALOT.
It's not broken, it's just designed that way
Try Camera 360 app. Its free and comes with lots of filters. One thing it does better than stock camera is focusing better on closer objects like the OP mentioned.
Hi, anyone found a solution? Still I can't use barcode scanner (was perfect before android 4.2.2 update I think)...
TL;DR/dream response to this post:
If anybody that has Camera FV-5 (this is the app I want to use and it seems to have the best support for MF via Camera2 API and "LENS_INFO_FOCUS_DISTANCE_CALIBRATION_CALIBRATED") could...
1. Switch to MF in FV-5
2. Set focus distance to infinity (drag the MF slider all the way to the left to the "mountain symbol")
3. Take a snap of a landscape type of scene.
I'd really like to take a look at the resulting DNG/JPEG in full size.
Long version:
I'm considering selling my Nexus 5 because the MF does not work (because of mechanical reasons) with my favorite apps "Manual Camera", "L Camera" or "Camera FV-5".
This GitHub issue comment explains why it doesn't work:
The problem relates to the fact that the focus system of the Nexus 5 is not calibrated, as the construction of the focusing system (a relatively simple spring with an electromagnet) does not allow for calibration. That means that the chip cannot know when it is on a certain position or not. If you point your phone downwards (i.e. you try to photograph your feet yourself while standing up) your phone will reach infinity (i.e. the spring will stretch farther), while pointing to the ceiling will be the worst case, and even when setting the focus position to infinity (manually) the focus will be farther away from infinity (the sprint contracts because of the lens weight). While autofocusing, the camera uses an iterative process to achieve focus, and do not rely on absolute positioning.

My question now: will it work on the 5X, or does it suffer from the same hardware design fail? The Nexus 5X should be calibrated (says apps should be able to read "LENS_INFO_FOCUS_DISTANCE_CALIBRATION_CALIBRATED" from the Camera2 API), but right now I don't trust this information at all, since support for for basic Camera2 features in many handsets (even Googles "own") has been a big fail.
To be clear: I'm not interested in manually focusing flower macros. Manually focusing at objects at up to 1 meter or so works perfectly with the Nexus 5. It is focusing at things at a distance (or at infinity) that isn't working. I want to be able to snap pictures fast without engaging AF in a street setting (see hyperfocal distance) with the focus set to infinity. Phone cameras are well suited for this because their sensors are abysmal which results in a very deep DOF.
Thanks in advance!

Thank you!!! I'm sad to see that this picture isn't in focus though. I guess that means that Google has released yet another Nexus phone which is incapable of manual focusing. You can see what the picture should really should have looked like by turning on the AF and focusing at something distant in your scene.
I wonder though if it's possible to have a distant object in focus by setting the MF a little to the right of the mountains on the MF slider i FV-5. If there is a another position, even if it isn't "at the mountains icons", which allows distant objects to be in focus that wouldn't bother me much. If you, or somebody else, has the time/energy/curiosity to research it that would be marvelous.
Hi. Just wondering is your camera autofocus works correctly? Because I saw that if an object move slightly it will become blur, hard to capture if the object is moving. Before this using Xperia Z1, which have a good autofocus. Even my young brother cheap phone work better. Other than this autofocus issue, image quality is still good.
My RN5Pro is running on stock miui version 9.5 the front cam is nice in low lights but the dissappointung part is that the front cams focus is fixed so that the pictures took in front cam has a little blurry nature the details are missing and face looks like painted .. is there any way to make manual or autofocus work on the front cam .. i have tried so many camera apps but while switching to front cam the focus looks locked .. if rooting and enabling camera2api helps it .. im noob here so someone who knows plzz reply.......
....
As you wrote it, its FIXED.
The RN5 has a strange, short focus distance. The distance is about an arm away: if you take a selfie, make sure you hold the phone as far as you can in your hand. But if you use a selfie stick, its too far, and faces will be blurry.
Earlier phones had a front cam, that was fixed to near infinite, so almost everything looked "sharp".
This new objective system provides a natural bokeh effect on the front cam, and if you're in focus, its very sharp. But the focus range is really short, so you're easily fall in or out of the focus point.
I also heard this problem from a Samsung A5 2017 user.
tl;dr: There's no mechanical focus on the front can, you cant change the focuspoint.

as u said one of the pic i took had sharp details which i took in an arm length but when i tried it ones again the focus became blurry ...... i want to know that is there any way to change the fixed focus point by any means...
Theres no way to change it.

cruel thing ??????
So ,I was skeptical of posting this ,but maybe it can be a spark for new development
At first ,I believed that perhaps the camera sensor in the A70 is just 8 MP and some marketing jargon made it appear 32 MP
Idk if this app is true or not but it's actually identifying the sensor as a proper GD1 Samsung sensor with resolution of 32 MP
Yet ,the software is only reading 8 MP from this sensor ,which may mean that there is probably an issue with software rather than hardware
I am no expert ,but I thought this might help us to perhaps unlock our device's full potential
the came api responds to the apps (gcam included) that the camera has only 8mpx
is the api
there are devices where peolple with root and twrp can change this
but it is not working on A70
It's a 32mp sensor, we've always known this. 32mp IS available but only using Samsung's own api, which is only available (so far) in Samsung's camera app. You can verify that yourself by taking a photo in 3:4H mode. Look at the details and the res will be 6528x4896 - 31.9 million pixels. So it's real and it's there. I also don't understand why people are chasing this mode when it's been shown that it's no better than the usual 12mp mode. Would what be nice though is having access to 12mp through the Google camera api, this would allow 12mp in gcam for example, instead.of the 8mp we are currently stuck with. Not.that the photos are bad in gcam but I believe theres a bit more detail to be resolved if we had the full 12mp.
Yes, pics taken with the GCam are good. The pic and resolution quality is acceptable and a level above the Samsung app even in 3:4H mode. But the quality is still a level beneath my Iphone7, in my testing.
Still hoping to see a high MP Gcam or significant software updates to the Samsung camera app.
Thanks to everyone for the reply
It's just annoying as hell to have low megapixel count ,because I usually love cropping into my photos and it really limits me , specifically because of a lack of telephoto lens as I love architecture photography
Another worthy note : I tested over 10 apps that check the hardware info of the phone
None of them could manage to identify the ultrawide cam nor the depth sensor ,all of them only identify the front and back camera...which probably mean there is sort of hope that maybe the Camera2API provided by Samsung is not really fully unlocked and it strict the readings of the entire camera module
If a developer could clarify why the ultrawide isn't identified I would be super happy
Maybe its an advantage of not owning a flagship phone before coz I have nothing to campare the cam of A70, but for me the 32mp mode is really good specially when using outside with good natural light, the zoom image is very impressive imo. Yes the gcam takes better images overall but I really love using the 32mp mode from the stock camera
