Question WiFi Kills Mobile Data - OnePlus 9 Pro

When I have my wifi on, but am not connected to a network, my mobile data does not work either. If I turn off wifi, then the mobile data works. What would cause this? As a 2nd question, Just changed carriers to verizon, what does the 5G symbol look like I'm in Houston and get and LTE+ with little up and down arrows on the side. Is that it?

in addition to the advice provided, make sure that in dev options you enable 'mobile data always active' which should take care of that issue, although without an unlimited data plan you'll max out data quick

5G looks like that on my phone (with a dual sim)
The carrier is Free Telecom in France.

Not seeing the 5G by the bars, but a speed check gives 50mps which is faster than I used to get.

I'm getting the same speed as 4G because my carrier is only deploying on the 700MHz at the moment but in some special places.
I'm not even sure there are already locations in France with Millimeter-wave 5G in France from any of the 4 carriers.

Use 2G (EDGE) only AT&T?

I will be using the phone on AT&T and I was wondering if the option to turn off 3G is present or use 2G networks. This would be under mobile networks. I ask because I get better coverage on EDGE and have wifi. AT&T has also removed this feature on their Androids for god only knows why.
So can anyone using the phone on AT&T comment whether or not this option is there and if it works correctly? Thanks

Of course. Here's the standard mobile network screen:
But when you're on WiFi it doesn't matter. It disconnects mobile data anyways.
Thanks. With my iPhone 4 I was able to turn off 3G and be on Wifi and have a very strong signal versus leaving 3G while being on Wifi and having 1 bar.

You can manually drop to "2G only" when you turn on WiFi if you want, but it automatically disconnects data when you connect WiFi. All phones hold onto signals to different extents. if you find your phone always on the edge of a 3G/2G handoff, the "2G only" switch will do it for you.
You can always grab a widget to do so as well. Most of the popular ones (I use Widgetsoid) offers a 2G only/2G+3G/3G only toggle type.

Radio problems.

So, i'm in the UK with my nice shiny OP3 (on Three UK) - I am rooted with twrp, but same applies on stock.
The radio in this phone seems to prefer H+/3G to 4G, even though where i live, i have full bars on both. My nexus 5 always prefered 4G, and the OP3 is set to prefer 4G but 90% of the time drops to 3G/H+
Another interesting thing, if i use the testing menu to force LTE only, even if it's on 4G already, completely stops any signal getting through for a number of minutes until it decides to connect sometime later. I have full LTE signal in my room too.
Is this a radio problem that could be solved in the future with a software update? not seen anyone else with this issue!
FYI, when it is on 4G, it's super fast and stays connected until a reboot, where the whole process starts again

APN Is exactly the same as my nexus 5, and i even added a new one. Same deal.
I'm an IT Professional, just not a developer. i've done everything i can think of. 4G does work, but only when it wants to. My phone is also registered with my carrier correctly.
Bump on this anyone?
I am having a similar problem I guess. I have the dual sims installed and one sim randomly shows no range. Further, the network preference is not the way it is supposed to be - Chose it as 4G and if 4G is not detected it falls back to 2G.

Same as you. Anyone know how to fix the network priority to lock onto LTE first and then drop to 3G for calls?

I did notice when I do have LTE it's fine but it won't re lock onto LTE after a call on Three where it has to drop to H
I'm having a problem where the phone catches 4G+ "carrier aggregation" and it'll jump from to 4g+ to 4g and back to 4g+ really fast like almost flashing . And speed test are showing low numbers. T-Mobile USA.

Same here. Sometimes it just locked to 3g/h+ in a strong LTE area for no reason. I'm on stock oos with one sim and 1 apn. Sometimes I need to reboot the phone to get LTE back.

I first put my sim into slot 1 when I first got the device, I was having the exact same issue. I found that the data priority sim, or if you only have one sim needs to be in sim slot 2.

Yes exactly. And even then it doesn't show up straight away despite 3/4 and usually full signal. Sometimes just putting it into standby mode and leaving it 20mins can sort it... Until I get another call lol. Wondering if it's just a software or firmware issue that could be patched. Lte is fine it's just never preferred despite the options being set

APN is not the universal response. Here he faces a problem of inaccurate network type choice, APN is only to have acces to internet through the provider's proxies. It's a radio problem clearly, the baseband is probably to be corrected by OnePlus.
It's really a strange thing to see those network type issues, MMS issues are still present after all those years.

This is what I thought. It's probably an easy fix for oneplus or rom developers. Custom radios are nothing new. Let's hope so anyway!
This is happening to me as well. I'm on three in a strong 4G area but it always prefers 3G it's so annoying hope it gets fixed soon.

same problem here.
i tested op3 with 3 different carriers
on two of them - lte no problem, instant connect...
on third sim - slow connection, frequent out of range. almost no lte.
tested third sim on iphone - instant lte connect, no problem.
seems like a incompatibility with an selected cellular operators.

Could be but I'm doubting it. OP3 Has full support at least for my carrier on both bands they use (3 & 20).. Never know, the devs here will figure it out if oneplus don't

Same issue here, have never got it to say 'LTE' for me since I got the phone, best it does is 4G whilst my Galaxy S5 would happily pickup LTE. Just wondering what UK users have there preferred network type set to? Mine is on GSM/WCDMA/LTE I assume that is right as that is what it went to itself and have tried LTE or LTE/WCDMA too.

How to exclude 2G connections on the Exynos version?

Hi,
In the network menù of my unlocked no brand S9+ with Exynos SOC I can't choose to have only 4G and 3G like in LG devices, do You know if there is some secret code or something like that?
My goal is to have the phone only connect to 3G and 4G networks, and never connect to 2G network
Thanks a lot.
I didn't have that option on my S7 and I don't have it either on my S9. It has only 2 options with "only": 3G and 2G.
But I don't miss that, as my goal is having my phone connected to the best available network. For this "LTE/3G/2G (auto connect)" setting works great.

The problem is that once the phone switch to 2G, it will not be possible to return to 3G or 4G unless you close the call, this means worse voice quality and no data connection until you're stuck in 2G.
There is an app called 4G Switcher that I use to set it to UMTS/LTE only. Try it.

You are technically correct, but the chance of that happening - starting a voice call while only in 2G coverage, moving to a 3G/4G area while still speaking and needing data connection while speaking - is a very long shot. Not to mention that if you force 4G/3G and there is only 2G coverage, then you can't make a voice call at all. So between a lesser quality one and not being able to do it, I'll choose the former.
But my opinions are based on my experience, my destinations and the 4G/3G coverage in my country (Romania). There are extremely rare circumstances where there is no 4G/3G coverage here.
I'm using Vodafone Italy, one of the best mobile operator here in Italy, and when I make a long call, i mean longer than 15 minutes, sooner or later it always got stuck on 2G.
So it is a very annoying behavior, and I can't understand why on a LG phone I can exclude 2G and with a Galaxy S9+ I can't.
Any update on this? It is very annoying e.g. when you're calling inside a car to always go and stay stuck in 2G until the end of the conversation, without data connection working
I want to know this too! I always have better 4G reception than 2G but sometimes it gets stuck to 2G.
up, any update about this?

Yea this app works great. But after January 1st I do believe it will not matter. Since they are doing away with anything lower than 4g

I can confirm that even now, if I start a call under 4G and I'm driving, soon it will switch to 2G, no matter what I do, and I'm using Vodafone Italy, one of the best network here.

Cell & Data Concurrency

Hi guys,
I have a Redmi Note 8 Pro BNIB. One of my top reason to buy this phone is because it has a feature for calls not disturb the data connection while playing games.
I tested and it doesn't work. My game still disconnected when receiving a call if I'm using Mobile Data connection. But when I use WiFi, it just lag a bit but still connected.
Any idea? Thanks.

I think you misunderstanding what the features means, that's how it works. Switch connection quickly when the current one dropped to prevent disconnect. Maybe if you activated CA or MIMO or switched to HSDPA because all of them should allow concurrency connection. Well atleast HSDPA one downloads won't stop when calling unlike single band LTE will stop ( without VOLTE?)
I can't really test MIMO / CA because there's only ONE LTE bts nearby :silly:
If you are connected to 4G and got a phone call. It has to switch back to UMTS and HSPA to support voice calling. Unless you have VoLTE
*Solution: Use 3G or HSPA/HSPA+ (H+)

Try system UI tuner. You'll need to give it access via ADB.
Not sure if you can hide the actual signal though but it's got a lot of options which may help

I can't use ADB.
I thought there is an option somewhere in a menu in Android.
Good Lock has a submodule, QuickStar. It can let you hide or rearrange any element in the statusbar.
I wish there was a way to show actual signal strength (-dBm) instead of "bars".
I know there are customizations but that requires rooting which is pretty much taboo these days.

I second that. Just use GoodLock. Find the NiceLock APK and NiceLock downloader on XDA and start using it. These modules have a lot of features that we all used to grab from GravityBox, XTouchwiz etc.

If you your phone loses 5G, and reverts to 4G, that logo will change accordingly. All it is stating is what Data service you are getting when connected to mobile network. Disappears when connected to Wifi as that becomes your current data connection.
No way to get rid of the Mobile network 4/5G indication when Wifi off

P20 pro has it natively, I think it looks mental personally.
System UI tuner would be your best bet without installing anything.
You'll need ADB from a pc though, no root needed.
Once you've granted it access it'll work from thereon in.
Signal strength option may be hidden in Android so sys UI might provide it. Check it out

Lol Edge. Can't remember the last time I saw an E sign.
Remember when 3G was fast. Personally I'd turn off 5G so it's not constantly trying to find a connection, if you're in a 4G area the speed should be more than enough
I'm not sold on 5G.
This is average for me.

Yeah I remember when I looked for a 3G zone in my town, these were the times. The E sign happens sometimes but I have a spot in my town where I can even get a G for GPRS I have turned the 5G right away too because the maximum I have in my town is LTE+ and the most common is H/H+. They are testing the lower 5G and advertising it as 5G ready. The same trick was with HSPA+ and they called it 4G ready
