Try system UI tuner. You'll need to give it access via ADB.
Not sure if you can hide the actual signal though but it's got a lot of options which may help

Ok forget about the carrier.
Can the network logo be removed without ADB.
I can't use ADB.
I thought there is an option somewhere in a menu in Android.
Good Lock has a submodule, QuickStar. It can let you hide or rearrange any element in the statusbar.
I wish there was a way to show actual signal strength (-dBm) instead of "bars".
I know there are customizations but that requires rooting which is pretty much taboo these days.

I second that. Just use GoodLock. Find the NiceLock APK and NiceLock downloader on XDA and start using it. These modules have a lot of features that we all used to grab from GravityBox, XTouchwiz etc.

If you your phone loses 5G, and reverts to 4G, that logo will change accordingly. All it is stating is what Data service you are getting when connected to mobile network. Disappears when connected to Wifi as that becomes your current data connection.
No way to get rid of the Mobile network 4/5G indication when Wifi off

P20 pro has it natively, I think it looks mental personally.
System UI tuner would be your best bet without installing anything.
You'll need ADB from a pc though, no root needed.
Once you've granted it access it'll work from thereon in.
Signal strength option may be hidden in Android so sys UI might provide it. Check it out

Lol Edge. Can't remember the last time I saw an E sign.
Remember when 3G was fast. Personally I'd turn off 5G so it's not constantly trying to find a connection, if you're in a 4G area the speed should be more than enough
I'm not sold on 5G.
This is average for me.

Yeah I remember when I looked for a 3G zone in my town, these were the times. The E sign happens sometimes but I have a spot in my town where I can even get a G for GPRS I have turned the 5G right away too because the maximum I have in my town is LTE+ and the most common is H/H+. They are testing the lower 5G and advertising it as 5G ready. The same trick was with HSPA+ and they called it 4G ready

I have a Tele2 sim, which uses Netcom's network, in turn causes my phone to roam at all times, which is normal for how things are here. The problem is that the Roaming sign by the signal bars replace the speed-signs, so I don't know if I'm using Edge, 3G or HSPDA... Except for going into the settings, about phone and checking the status there.
The Galaxy S I had showed the speed and traffic with another icon besides the signal bars, so it had it sorted.
So, I want to replace the R-sign with the speed sign, in short.
tele2
i don't know if you solved your problem, but i am curious if you have.
here's the thing: a friend of mine has just as i have a prime, i am rocking vodafone he is using tele2. my vodafone card works in both, a kpn sim works in both... his tele2 works just in mine in his phone it just shows the R as in roaming on top of the range bar and nothing else.
Now is that particalur issue not the main problem...though it tells me something now: the main problem is that on his phone, just showing the R it refuses to go on the internet through 3g or H or whatever, besides wifi of course.
Anybody got a clue on what might be the issue?
thnx in advance

The R is the symbol for roaming, the apn settings are probably wrong.
/Edit: After a little research (google) it seems the problem is because Tele2 uses the networks of Netcom and Telenor where they do not have coverage themselves.
Don't worry though, the Roaming charges is not "international" charges. So you will not be skinned to the bone from your phone company.
Only fix is to change operator.

we don't know...tele2 doesn't know...we tried everything in every way possible...it's too weird...propably something simple you wouldn't think of....
Did you try checking the option that allows data connections while roaming? That's off by default of course in stock android.
my ADP1 (1.x android) had a big fat warning that "data connection was lost because of roaming" Not sure what ICS displays in that case...
I'm in the Netherlands and also on Tele2 and have the same issue. Because here Tele2 uses T-Mobile masts, I have to have international roaming turned on or I get no data, regardless of APN, so my phone thinks I'm roaming all the time.
The same is true for my other family members who are on Android and Tele2, but I'm the only one with ICS. Even though our phones all need to be set to international roaming, we are not billed as roaming.
No answer for you, just hoping for a solution without having to root (because I don't want to yet )
Same goes for me. I'm with Telfort (Netherlands), which uses KPN network. I've already tried installing different modem, but that doesn't seem to help.

This sounds promising to me, but I actually don't understand anything of it. Could you explain?
It's good to see there are more people with this particular problem, in different countries too. Hopefully someone will come up with a solution soon. Even if you don't have this problem, why wouldn't you want to see you connection speed travelling abroad?

OK, i understand what you mean now! I copied systemUI.apk from system/app folder (upload with dropbox, quite easy), changed .apk to .zip and got all the .png files from the res folder in the apk.
Then it turns out there are very neat little icons with corresponding file names. There are files for G, 3G, E, H and 4G connection speeds. And there is a 'R' for roaming file. Off course i could change that png to, lets say, the H icon. But then i still won't be able to see my connection speed right? I will just always see an H icon, since i'm always roaming.
What i am, and supposedly others are, looking for is the place with the settings for these icons. I would like to tell my phone that even when roaming, i just want to see an icon which displays the connection speed, not the fact that i'm roaming.
Little off topic: what is the difference between blue and gray icon colors?
Thanks!

I am feeling very stupid. Turns out that the solution is very simple, I just had to change a very normal setting. Go to: system settings/more (under wireless and networks)/mobile networks (or in Dutch: systeeminstellingen/meer (onder draadloos en netwerken)/mobiele netwerken). Turn off (data?) roaming (NL: gegevensroaming) en turn on national data roaming (NL: same, since it's not translated). Maybe do a short flight mode, and voilà, you can see you network speeds!
Nice one, it wouldn't have occurred to me...I expected to have to live with it until my contract ends in a few months.
Definitely not using Tele2 for much longer...everyone in my house is having I issues with texts not arriving, regardless of handset.

Good luck with a different provider, but don't go with Telfort than!
I've been working on a fix since a long time now. If you are in SD community then you prolly know me. Anyway I was able to fix this on two of my phones and it's working fine. I tested for 12 hours now. I'll also tell you in the end what problems I'm seeing. I'm also working on a fix for that.
I noticed that a service is started when the fallback happens but if I kill that service the network also dies. But if you follow the below method it safely starts a new service which kills the one that's responsible for killing the 4G/LTE
1. Upgrade your phone to 13B firmware
2. Root 13B
3. Now download Shortcut Master lite app from play store.
4. Now add these shortcuts to your favorites in the "Shortcut Master lite app". You can search for "LTE" and click on search button
LTEBandSelection
LTETestMain
LTE System Selection
CDMAPreference
5. Now click on "LTEBandSelection" and enable all the bands
6. Save and reboot
7. You now need to enable your data and turn off your wifi. Make sure your phone is in Global mode (in settings >> Mobile networks >> System select)
8. After your phone is rebooted open "Shortcut Master lite" app.
9. Now tap on LTETestMain
10. Select Click on CDMA preference.
Now choose Band preference and select "any"
P_REV_Preference ---> "MOB_P_REV 3
This is important.. EVDO Revision --> Rev A
11. "LTE Connect w/o IMS PDN" must be checked
12. Now go back to your main menu in shortcut master lit app
13. This step is very important. Changing the timeout is important. Tap on LTE System Selection
Except "Scan duration" add a couple zeros to all the other timers. For eg: T_mpsr timer (Min) is 200
The fallback timer will reset itself after reboot. But don't worry the configuration is already updated with the new value. For some reasons the shortcut master lite app is not picking it up.
14. Now finally click on "CDMA preference" in the main menu and make sure it has the value you set in Step 10
At step 10 or 13 your network should go away and your phone should complain about "no network". That's fine. just ignore the message.
Now finally reboot your phone. That's it. You should now have 4G LTE and it won't fallback to 3G or H+
The only problem is when I'm on a call my 4G LTE is dropped to 3G/H+. But after I hang up it goes back to 4G LTE after 12 seconds. I don't know if it's an expected behavior. But I'm trying to see if there is a fix for that.
I tested this with Tmobile. Make sure your APN settings are correct.
Not working for me on Cricket (AT&T). Still will always go back to H+, 4G LTE only works when I select CDMA.

Awesome, thank you! worked for me T-mobile.
it initially didn't work but I had to turn data off then on.
It also cycles me to 2g speed for a few seconds sometimes but that may be due to poor signal in building.

Yeah It's due to the poor signal. I got that too. You can check your signal strength using LTE discover app.
But overall it's working fine for Tmobile. I'm gonna try and fix ATT tonight.
Is 13B the main thing in the solution? I've changed these settings before on 11A and wasn't fixed. I tried these numbers on 11A and still don't work.
Also, unless a phone supports VOLTE, it'll fall back to 3G/H for calls.

I tried in 11A and it didn't work for me. So I guess it needs 13B.
So I tried various combinations last night for AT&T/Cricket, but I was not able to get it to work. No matter what I tried, when I had 4G LTE, voice wouldn't work and whenever voice worked, I was back to H+.
If others are reporting that T-Mobile works reliably on 4G and nobody can figure out how to make this work for AT&T, I guess it's time to switch to T-Mobile.

No. Hold on. I have a solution for ATT too. I tried something last night. Actually while I was working on a solution for ATT I found that we don't even have to go through the steps I mentioned in my OP to solve the problem. It boils down to invoking a service and killing a native VZW service.
The ATT solution I have works but in low signal area 4G fades and it doesn't fallback to 3G or H+. I had to recycle data to get 3G or H+.
It's Working!!!!!!!!! Thank you!!!!!!!

Yes, that same thing happens when you switch to CDMA mode with AT&T. Voice doesn't work then (obviously), but it also doesn't fall back to H+ automatically, when you lose 4G coverage you pretty much lose signal all together.

Yeah I know. I also know why that is happening. Actually I think it's a bug in the baseband firmware. But we can fix that issue by just overriding the command that was sent by baseband firmware.

Root? I just flashed the rooted sys image. That's it. instead of copying it in the FAT32 memory card just copy it to your phone's internal and you don't have to deal with split and merge stuff
If it drops out of 4G on a call then you're talking on 1X. So no video chat, no HD voice and no voice + data?
So, i'm in the UK with my nice shiny OP3 (on Three UK) - I am rooted with twrp, but same applies on stock.
The radio in this phone seems to prefer H+/3G to 4G, even though where i live, i have full bars on both. My nexus 5 always prefered 4G, and the OP3 is set to prefer 4G but 90% of the time drops to 3G/H+
Another interesting thing, if i use the testing menu to force LTE only, even if it's on 4G already, completely stops any signal getting through for a number of minutes until it decides to connect sometime later. I have full LTE signal in my room too.
Is this a radio problem that could be solved in the future with a software update? not seen anyone else with this issue!
FYI, when it is on 4G, it's super fast and stays connected until a reboot, where the whole process starts again

Yes exactly. And even then it doesn't show up straight away despite 3/4 and usually full signal. Sometimes just putting it into standby mode and leaving it 20mins can sort it... APN is not the universal response. Here he faces a problem of inaccurate network type choice, APN is only to have acces to internet through the provider's proxies. It's a radio problem clearly, the baseband is probably to be corrected by OnePlus.
It's really a strange thing to see those network type issues, MMS issues are still present after all those years.

Hi,
In the network menù of my unlocked no brand S9+ with Exynos SOC I can't choose to have only 4G and 3G like in LG devices, do You know if there is some secret code or something like that?
My goal is to have the phone only connect to 3G and 4G networks, and never connect to 2G network
Thanks a lot.
I didn't have that option on my S7 and I don't have it either on my S9. It has only 2 options with "only": 3G and 2G.
But I don't miss that, as my goal is having my phone connected to the best available network. For this "LTE/3G/2G (auto connect)" setting works great.

The problem is that once the phone switch to 2G, it will not be possible to return to 3G or 4G unless you close the call, this means worse voice quality and no data connection until you're stuck in 2G.
There is an app called 4G Switcher that I use to set it to UMTS/LTE only. Try it.

You are technically correct, but the chance of that happening - starting a voice call while only in 2G coverage, moving to a 3G/4G area while still speaking and needing data connection while speaking - is a very long shot. Not to mention that if you force 4G/3G and there is only 2G coverage, then you can't make a voice call at all. So between a lesser quality one and not being able to do it, I'll choose the former.
But my opinions are based on my experience, my destinations and the 4G/3G coverage in my country (Romania). There are extremely rare circumstances where there is no 4G/3G coverage here.
I'm using Vodafone Italy, one of the best mobile operator here in Italy, and when I make a long call, i mean longer than 15 minutes, sooner or later it always got stuck on 2G.
So it is a very annoying behavior, and I can't understand why on a LG phone I can exclude 2G and with a Galaxy S9+ I can't.
Any update on this? It is very annoying e.g. when you're calling inside a car to always go and stay stuck in 2G until the end of the conversation, without data connection working
I want to know this too! I always have better 4G reception than 2G but sometimes it gets stuck to 2G.
up, any update about this?

What configuration do I need to choose using the app to exlude 2G?

Yea this app works great. But after January 1st I do believe it will not matter. Since they are doing away with anything lower than 4g

I can confirm that even now, if I start a call under 4G and I'm driving, soon it will switch to 2G, no matter what I do, and I'm using Vodafone Italy, one of the best network here.
When I have my wifi on, but am not connected to a network, my mobile data does not work either. If I turn off wifi, then the mobile data works. What would cause this? As a 2nd question, Just changed carriers to verizon, what does the 5G symbol look like I'm in Houston and get and LTE+ with little up and down arrows on the side. Is that it?

in addition to the advice provided, make sure that in dev options you enable 'mobile data always active' which should take care of that issue, although without an unlimited data plan you'll max out data quick
5G looks like that on my phone (with a dual sim)
The carrier is Free Telecom in France.

Not seeing the 5G by the bars, but a speed check gives 50mps which is faster than I used to get.

I'm getting the same speed as 4G because my carrier is only deploying on the 700MHz at the moment but in some special places.
I'm not even sure there are already locations in France with Millimeter-wave 5G in France from any of the 4 carriers.
