My Kindle Fire 8 10th Gen blocks background notifications (I need this for Discord). I have made some tweaks using Fire Toolbox, but all of them look like they shouldn't interfere with notifications, background processes, or network. One potential last resort solution I have is to get a custom rom and see how that goes, but afaik nothing like that has been developed for this device yet.
First, I tried sending a test notification using Tasker. It worked, but Tasker also has a persistent status notification which may keep it running in the background.
I did a Discord test next. I logged into an alt from my desktop, and dmed my main. I could get notifications on my phone, but nothing popped up on my fire. I noticed that opening the Discord app was like opening a closed app (Slower, pings and messages take a few seconds to load in), not like reopening an app from recents.
The final test I did was from Google voice (VOIP messaging). I pretty much did the same thing as Discord, and I noticed the same things.
Some other things I did:
- I made sure that battery optimization was off for Discord
- I checked memory usage from developer options, and confirmed that Discord was not running 100% of the time
- I force stopped Discord on my phone so that it wouldn't get notifications in case that interfered with other devices
- I know that it is possible to keep 3rd party apps running, but I don't know how to do it. Nova launcher is reported as "always running".

My phone's interface has been crashing a lot lately, but I couldn't figure out why. So I installed CatLog and here's the log.
Oh, the phone is a Galaxy Nexus with latest CM11 nightly and around 23:13 the interface crashed.
Please someone help me with interpreting the log. Thanks!
Are you using accessibility settings? I keep seeing repeating( a LOT) errors from what looks to be called accessibility node, caused by 9gag it seems also.
On top of that I'm seeing constant killing and restarting of apps. Something that was seen on some custom kernels when a new lmk/oom settings were being refined and tested. Have you modified minfree values at all?.
Are you getting a popup that says something like "systemUI has stopped" or is the status/navbars just disappearing and coming back. It just looks like the system is trying to reclaim ram constantly and VERY often. Have you tried a different kernel(like dirty for instance is one of the newest and constantly worked on kernel that is fully stable for 99% of us)
Have you changed any systemUI properties? Like navbar, status bar, maybe a theme in use?
I have 4 applications enabled in Accessibility (Tasker, LastPass, Greenigy & Yatse Notification Plugin), but except for LastPass (which I only activated a week ago, after the problems started to occur) I've used them for a long time.
The kernel that I'm using is the original CM11 one, without any custom settings.
The UI is just crashing, without any messages. I have the same settings (no navbar, status bar hacks, no themes) since forever.
I thought that there is a RAM problem as the restarts seemed to appear when there were lots of apps running, or trying to edit a long G+ message. I also wiped the system a week ago and restored only a few system apps via Titanium Backup 6.1.5.3 (SMSes, witdgets, call log, data usage, blootooth pairings, stuff like that), but without much success.
I don't know what other information could I add...
I have been using the phone for about a week, running the latest version. I have noticed a lot of times I am not receiving notifications properly or consistently. My phone is pretty notification busy, so I notice when I'm missing things.
I came from a Nexus 5 phone running Lollipop, so this is my first experience with Marshmallow. I have a feeling these notification issues are due to the new power saving / deep sleep features in 6.0.
Here are the issues I've noticed so far.
- Hangounts : received notification for hangout message (not sms), opened app and it said "received 10 minutes ago". Phone was in my pocket, hadn't looked at it for a few hours.
- Ebay : no outbid notification, was outbid overnight when my phone was not plugged in and left on my desk.
- Life360 : Was not showing up on the map for location tracking when checking from another device. I opened the app on my phone and it reconnected. This happens consistently.
- Sleep Cycle: Alarm does not go off if the phone is not plugged in to a power source. When I unlock the phone in the morning, the alarm starts ringing (even though it's late).
- BaconReader : No message notifications until I open the app, or late notifications (delayed over an hour).
- CSipSimple : SMS messages are not received when phone is left overnight (this is a IP phone with SMS messaging through an SIP provider, all data related).
Email seems consistently good, which is nice. Social media apps I haven't noticed an issue yet, but I'm not really busy using those.
I tried re-installing some apps. I've also tried setting the app notification settings under app settings such as "Treat as priority", "Allow peeking", and "Wake".
Any one else? Any recommendations?
I searched and found:
Email notifications and touch screen problems after Dec update.
Missing SMS Notifications
have you restored some of those apps from a backup of your old phone? if yes, consider a fresh install of those.
else, try turning off doze for those troublemakers, maybe restart your phone, and see what happens during an appropriate amount of time. do this by going to settings -> battery -> top right corner menu -> optimisation.
I did restore the apps from backup. Some that were causing issue I did uninstall and reinstall, configure form scratch, no help.
I'll try turning off battery optimization for some of the apps and see if that helps. Thanks for the tip.
Those are all side effects of Doze - in some cases (Sleep Cycle) it sounds like the it hasn't been updated to use the API23 AlarmManager calls that should work with Doze. Hangouts should have worked - I'd be surprised if its not using Google Cloud Messaging which is Doze exempt.
Exempting apps from battery optimisation doesn't fully exempt them from all Doze restrictions but it's worth a try as it might help. It does allow apps to keep network connectivity which is likely key for Life360, Ebay and CSipSimple.
I would contact the Devs of all the apps to alert them their app isn't working properly on Marshmallow
Exempting Sleep Cycle in the battery saver allowed the alarm to work when I didn't have it plugged into a charger. I'll email the developer.
I've added exemptions to the battery saver for all apps that I use where I would never want them to decide to go to sleep. Everything seems better now, I haven't noticed any missed notifications since.
I hope hangouts was a fluke, I would also agree it should work properly...
Good evening everyone. I have a question I've been meaning to ask for a while, as I cant figure it out myself.
I have a lot of apps. Some i use all day, some I keep around (just in case i think i might ever think about using it once . As we all know, some apps use persistent notifications to keep the app running in the background. I know Oreo now has the option to turn off notifications for apps, but I don't know if disabling the notification affects it's ability to be running in the background. I have some apps that seem to be negatively affected, such as Airdroid. When i turn off the notification, my computer's ability to discover and connect to my phone is practically non-existent. Is this coincidence or is there a legit issue with turning off notifications. (I do have a rooted Pixel 2 XL, so my if there are any suggestions for a rooted phone, I'm all ears).
My second question is this: if turning off the persistent "running" notifications affects the apps performance, is there a way to group multiple apps' notifications into one icon, so my status bar stays clean? I like to keep it empty so i can easily tell at a glance if there are new notifications that require attention, like texts and message updates.
Thanks everyone. Let me know what you think or how you keep your notification/status bar clean!
Hi all,
I'm running several apps that should run all the time (AdGuard, Network Speed Meter) or for a long time (speed trap warner,...) but OxygenOS kills them after a certain period. Some of them restart automatically, some don't. Of course all of these apps are 'not battery optimized'. Is there any chance to prevent OxygenOS from killing them?
Are there custom ROMs that can overcome this problen?
I'm on the latest OxygenOS Pie Beta, but the behavior was similar on Android O...
Thanks a lot,
W
Did you try locking the app via recents menu?
Thank for the info, didn't know that.
Unfortunately it doesn't help, Adguard and the network monitor don't appear in recents. The speed trap warner automatically starts and stops when I'm in the car, i don't want to open recents manually every time.

This is not changing anything,e ven with disable battery disabled, even with adaptative battery disabled.
I have the same problem. I have not found any solution whatsoever. This is really frustrating. I've made sure apps aren't optimized. Advanced optimization is disabled. Developer options background limit is at standard. I've pinned the apps in recent apps and it still happens. Apps get killed all the time.
For example,
1. I use Google Fit to start tracking a run. Within 10 minutes of tracking, the app is closed and workout not tracked. Its not even like i touched the phone and opened other apps during this.
2. I have VoIP account setup in the default dialer. Calls come through only 50% of the time cause the dialer is closed.
3. YouTube Music, constantly gets closed if i simply pause the music. Within 2 minutes, the app is closed.
4. Trying to transfer 15GB of files through Explorer app from phone to file server, never succeeds if i don't watch the app and keep the screen on.
5. Plex gets closed and therefore my photos don't auto backup with the phone is plugged in.
This is absolutely ridiculous! Why the hell a phone with 8GB of RAM is killing apps is beyond me!
Custom ROM on the same phone, like Lineage OS, no issues. Can have optimization on, battery manager on and all. In fact, battery life is better on custom when its not killing the apps! Seems to be the only solution until OOS can stop killing apps so aggressively.

My app is not killed when i lock it in the switch app menu
There's a whole website regarding that issue on several devices, maybe it helps: dontkillmyapp(dot)com/general#user-solution
Hi all,
Just converted from Huawei to this beauty which I already love dearly
Though, having big issues with two apps I really *need* to stay active in the background. Both apps do have the option "Run in background" which are activated. I've also made sure those two apps are not Battery Optimized. I've also made sure they have all needed Access Rights (Camera, Mic, etc etc). Still - when the lid are closed and a while after, the two apps stops receiving notifications. Also, the two apps stop sending information back to the systems telling that I have the apps active and are monitoring/on watch. Opening the lid are enough to wake the apps up enough to receive notifications. I can honestly not use this phone unless I find the cause of this whatever are killing the apps. The notifications are alarms from two different monitoring systems.
Are there any other places/settings I can look to find out why the apps stop responding?
Also, where are now the setting where I can tell that these two apps should autostart on boot?
In advance, thx.
Br,
Stigh
Maybe turning this on would help maintain a stable connection: settings>apps & notifications>Special app access>Unrestricted data
I also have a Huawei, unfortunately the option of AutoStart apps isn't available in this phone as far as I know.
Can I ask if you are also having background 'clicks' from the earpiece when talking on the phone?
My wife is having same issue with her lg stylo 6, I say it's ram issues since she's using 99% ram all the time. Hers will close apps even if recent button was hit and went right back to the same one. If you find a fix lmk, also check ram and usage.

Hi, thx for the feedback, I will test this setting and see - and report back Though, as it works as long as the phone do not fall into Deep Sleep, how can it be unrestricted data? To me, it seems Android go into some Deep Sleep state some time after you close the phone - I suspect this is a Motorola-thing, not Android 10.
No, I have no 'clicks' in the backround when using phone itsself or BT headset. Have not tested the original cabled earpiece though.
