Video recording in custom rom - Redmi Note 8 Questions & Answers

I'm currently using evolution x custom rom adnroid 11 for redmi note 8 (gingko) and I have never been able to record any video. Any app that I use crashes or doesn't record the video at all. When they do, it has a weird long length and doesn't play at all. I even tried ANX camera but it also crashes when I try to take a video. Video stabilization also doesn't work in ANX camera as well. Is there a solution for this?

Camera capturing Slowmotion

Hi all!! I've seen that the lost of slowmotion recording from stock rom motorola to any AOSP ROM, is a very annoying thing that developers are trying to solve porting stock camera even without this function but working hardly to port that funcion too. For me this feature was something that i won't lost on my device and looking for some cameras or something, i've found SNAP CAMERA HDR that allow the user to record slowmo videos on AOSP ROMS too. I've personally tried and it's working as the seme as the original video recording.

Google Cam For Lineage os/ Resurrection Remix?

I have tried many camera on los and RR ROM but nothing is really helping. I followed one post and installed 5.2 version . it is okay but no HDR option. How can I fix all of my prbln? Any proper solution?
planetera said:
You have to go settings - change the resolution of rear camera to 16:9 (9.0 megapixels) and it will work.
Use this version;
https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/dev-arnova8G2/#apk285
With this, you will have HDR+ working for both rear and front cam.

Will you please specifically tell which one?

Nvm . Thanks anyway .
I have installed this version and its working fine. So cool
Wrong pic ****.
Use arnova's pixel2 version and disable enable_micro setting in developer options of the app. Then you can use 12 mp back camera with hdr+ enhanced too.
And also if you want 120fps slow motion recording (4x slowed down to 30fps video), you should have miui camera installed and at least open video recording screen of the miui cam, then try gcam's slomo.
For every reboot you must do that opening video recording screen in miui cam before gcam slomo or it crashes. Looks like miui cam is enabling something just by opening its video recording screen.

MiUI Camera modified media profiles hevc / h265

Hi all,
I've been editing the media_profiles.xml for my mi note 3 and thought I'd share it since I've changed it to use hevc / h265. Attached is my file to be copied into /system/etc/. This is easiest to do with root or you can copy it using TWRP without root I would think. Make sure to set permissions after copy to 644, otherwise you might get a bootloop. Also backup your own file first! I'm using MIUI 9.6 by xiaomi.eu, but this file seems to be fairly universal across roms. This modification works with the MIUI camera app, other apps like GCam and Opencamera seem to use their own profiles so this makes no change for them.
Steps again...
Be rooted or use TWRP if not
Backup own media_profiles.xml
Copy file in attachment to system/etc and unzip
Set permissions on media_profiles.xml to 644 to avoid problems
Reboot and enjoy / test in MIUI camera app
Improvements:
Use HEVC / h265 instead of h264 and changed bitrates. Default rates on mine were 42mbit for 4k and 19mbit at 1080p using h264. I've changed these to 28mbit for 4k and 13mbit for 1080p. This should give roughly the same quality but lower file sizes. 720p and lower resolutions are left unchanged since I never use them. I've also changed the audio bitrate to 192kbit (update: also there is a file with 256kbit audio if desired, everything else is the same in that file) with a higher minimum sample rate and also set image quality to 100 for all cameras and doubled the image decoding memory cap from 20 to 40.

Great!
Great, smaller file size + better audio, even if there are still watery sound in the surroundings but the main audio is much better.

There is this to improve audio a bit further (I used the root method mentioned), seems to work on mine. Makes the audio louder and clearer.

If you're using vendor from lineage 15.1, I think this fix should work. If it isn't you can try the GCam mod I posted here https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=77901429&postcount=92
It enables hevc, set memcap to 40, and "HIGH" audio bitrate to 192k

Thanks for the mod unfortunately I still no luck to record HEVC & 60fps video.
What I'm did:
1. Delete all previous camera mod & reboot
2. Flash jason.all.in.one_minimal_BSG_hevc_Black-v2.2.h.zip in Magisk
3. In recovery wipe cache and cache art
4. install BSG Cam 5.3.015 60fps
5. shot the video with 60fps
I've tried several time but the video properties still shown 30fps & H.264 coding (not hevc).
I'm using Treble Resurrection Remix ROM with based LOS15.1 vendor & TwistLoop kernel.
Any step I've miss out?

5.2, 5.3 google hdr+ camera does not support hevc.
This way is suitable for Xiaomi Mi6. Maybe you can try.
For LOS15. Instructions for using 60FPS:
Install All in One Minimal. After restarting the phone, first open the snapdragon camera ( or MIUI camera ) and switch to the video , exit the app. ( this needs to be done with every restart of the phone ). Then you can use 60fps to record video.

Tried with Mi6 All in one Minimal (Mi6.all.in.one_minimal-v2.3.a.zip & Mi6.all.in.one_minimal_hevc-v2.3.b.zip). Both modules result of the Gcam not working or front camera black off.
Shot with snapdragon 3.0.r2 (Open, close & open again), prompt error say "HFR is not supported for selected resolution". I've set the resolution to 1080p or 720p & FPS to HFR60.
Any advise

You should not install the mi6 module directly.

In oder to eliminate possible error, I format the phone & reinstall LOS 15.1 & try again.
Because of persist.camera.dxo will crash/black-off all the camera apps in LOS 15.1, I've disable it.
With this new mod:
-Gcam is working in photo & video shooting. But the video taken by Gcam is H264 but not hevc.
-I can't get HEVC video & 60fps by using the Snapdragon camera 3.0.r2, error "HFR is not supported for selected resolution" (720 & 1080p)
-Miui Camera crash when switch to video mode. HDR not working in photo mode.
-Stock camera unable shot video, photo ok.
Above is my finding, the hevc & 60fps video still no luck in Mi Note 3.
Let me know if have any new update mod to try, thanks

Snapdragon camera 3.0.r2 selection 60HSR
Miui camera changed to 4k. Because this module is suitable for BSG's GCam, so miui cameras cannot use 1080p and 720P.
Gcam 5.2 and 5.3 do not support hevc.
Miui Camera HDR not working in photo mode. I do not know why.
To use the GCam to record 60fps, you must follow the instructions below.
First open the snapdragon camera ( or MIUI camera ) and switch to the video , exit the app. ( this needs to be done with every restart of the phone ). Then you can use GCam to record 60fps video.

Ok, I've tried again. Miui camera, snapdragon camera & stock camera all can't take the video.
Miui camera:
when switch to video mode, it will crash the camera app.
Snapdragon camera:
without set any fps, when press record button, it prompt error "Could not start media recorder, can't start video recording"
Stock Camera: same error as snapdragon camera.
Can't record video except Gcam, but Gram unable to test Hevc & 60fps.
Once I delete all in one jason camera mod, all camera app can record video again.

How to enable google camera 4k on custom roms (i.e. ResurrectionRemix)

Hey guys,
I really like the google camera but it seems like I can't get 4k (30fps) video recording up and running. If I switch it on, the camera force closes, no matter what I do or what version I use.)
Right now I am at the latest version of saneklic (2018-07-21; MGCamera_5.1.0.18_R5Plus_v.5.1.17_fix_crash.apk)
I know about the tutorial claiming you need to enable it in some "whyred.xml" which is in a "device feature folder" (a folder somewhere in system/etc/) or something like that, but there is no such thing in a custom rom: it exists only on MIUI. I've already tried every tutorial possible, but nothing helps.
4k is working with the lineage snap, the google camera picture quality is much better though and I really prefere the gcam (because of additional settings/mods)
Thank you very much, any help is very much appreciated. If someone can help me, I will donate you a coffee :highfive:

Hey man, I'm really disappointed so far by RN5, I couldn't find a way to record stabilized 4K on custom roms, not even with Open Camera which worked fine on MIUI 10. I have a two year old RN3 which records 4K with gcam (not stabilized) and takes slightly better photos than RN5.
So far i've tried RR, LOS and AEX. 4K recording crashes any camera I've used. Open Camera just gives an error. Waited 2 weeks to unlock bootloader, thinking it will open the gates of heaven. In fact been through hell since I unlocked(yesterday). Antirollback is like a minefield which I luckily avoided, then front camera barely works with gcam, some slight battery drain with custom roms and now 4K recording is broken. Feels like I've downgraded my phone.
Think I'll try to flash MIUI 10, root it, enable camera 2 api for gcam and use Open Camera for EIS enabled 4K. Btw the latest gcam by alone_in_dark works best, even front camera works quite good, try it.
Edit: I flashed MIUI 10, once I enabled camera2 api 4K doesn't work. So it's either 4K or HDR+. Thanks Xiaomi.

Can't say no to that. But since 4K (3840 × 2160 resolution) doesn't appear in open camera after enabling camera2 api, I don't think there's a fix for that. It appears only 4000 x 2000 2:1 which gives an error. I did manage to get 4K working with another third party camera, but without EIS. Because RN5 can record 4K with excellent stabilization it's a pitty not to use it. So now if I want to record something I just use another build.prop without cam2.api then reboot, and switch back to enabled cam2.api prop when I want to use HDR+

This is horrible! I mean is it a firmware issue or some custom rom problem? Unfortuantly I'm not much into mobile software development... I really really want a fix, I would even pay money for it xD :highfive:
Edit_0: If we take a look at this link; a possible solution is shown but it doesn't work... a hotfix would be cool but meh it's alright you can't have it all...
Edit_1: Installing it as a system app doesn't help either btw

Hello my friend, it seems you can have it all, I finally found a way to record 4K with EIS while having camera2 api enabled. I'm really happy now and overall satisfied with the phone. Only issue remaining is the front camera HDR+ which is beyond my knowledge, hopefully someone else will come with a fix.
So now, how I managed to record 4K? I'm on MIUI 10 (8.7.12), and using latest blackbox kernel by KunalKene1797. Don't know if these have any effect, but I thought it's good to know.
The third party camera I'm using is Snap Camera, there are certain settings which need to be enabled. I'll post a video with the settings I used and which worked best. 4K Video Support and Use Camera2 API being the most important ones. There could be other settings which could improve the recording, but I like to stay on these stable settings, because I'm pleased with the results so far.
Here's the video with the settings needed in Snap Cam https://youtu.be/gRj9LhYWv5Y(video is back)
Here's the first 4K video https://youtu.be/oQGc4gXnGU0
A test for auto-focus https://youtu.be/V41k21qKQpE
No EIS sample vs EIS https://youtu.be/_qNFNs2gq74 VS https://youtu.be/00J-3cAzLjg
Edit 1: I also tried setting higher bitrate than the default 42, however in windows at the details on the first video it shows 40 total bitrate and when setting to 64 it shows 42, either way it seems the quality was marginally improved. I guess the phone can't write faster than that or the storage doesn't allow it.
https://youtu.be/Q7Lqlr-QanA
Some stuttering can be seen from 0:08 to 0:11, but I think that's because the phone started thermal throttling, it's very hot outside and from all the testing, phone was quite hot too.
I really hope it works for you as well, take care.

Hi! Thanks for all the details. I am using the latest miui 10, and WITHOUT api2 turned on, I used hedge camera app, and the 4k eis was working fine, but phone was droping the frames / stuttering the recorded video, which is a bit annoying.
I tested your setup, and I can see that its better, but still sometimes I can see some dropped frames. It happen to you too?
Thanks in advance for any suggestion.

Yes, it happens to me as well, in the first 8 to 10 seconds, I think it's the cpu, it can't use EIS very well with 4K. Without EIS there are no dropped frames or stutter issues.
A suggestion would be to use a very fast micro sd card, haven't tested, but worth a try.
After about 4-5 minutes the phone gets quite warm and stutter is inevitable due to thermal throttling.
Flash this in TWRP to enable 4k recording in Google camera and other camera2 API-enabled apps

Problems with camera in custom ROMs

Every time that I try using an ARM64 custom ROM, I can no longer record videos, and sometimes the camera app crashes on start. I've tried the camera that comes with the ROM, I've tried various cameras from the Play Store and also I've tried Google Camera ports, but they don't work.
Help.
Use Footej Camera from the attachment.
Just a little note: with Alize v10 kernel I didn't encounter any problems even recording videos by Footej Camera only. Tried with AEX 5.4 and LiquidRemix ROMs. Here's a link if you are interested: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=76356195&postcount=33

There's a premium version of Footej Camera, which is unfortunatelly paid.
