Not really an S20 specific question, but -
I want to move away from the android/google messages app. I've tried both signal and textra now. On both apps, if the sender is utilizing RCS (has "chat features" turned on in messages), I do not receive the message. If RCS/Chat Features is turned off, I get their messages just fine. I know this because I was using my wifes phone to test... turning RCS on and off and sending messages to see what would come through to my phone.
Given how prolific the android/google messages app is, am I pretty much locked into it now? I don't understand why messages sent from others utilizing RCS aren't reaching my phone when using any app other than the messages app.
Any help much appreciated. I'd really like to have the freedom to use a different app.
Thanks!

So I'm currently using GoSMS for group messaging and it actually works pretty well for grouping up messages if I was messaged as part of a group. It uses MMS to in order to make this function possible
The problem is that performance suffers tremendously when I get several at a time. I remember driving one day when friends were texting back and forth about something and I had to stop the car because my phone was completely stuck on just managing the text messages. GPS or any other apps would not run properly during the texts
Hoping there is an alternative even if it is paid
I have been having this issue since yesterday morning where as the title describes that hangouts is taking priority over messages. I literally will not receive messages unless hangouts is selected as the default app. I was thinking that this may have been started once I got a bunch of updates through the play store. However, I uninstalled updates and disabled Hangouts attempting to force the problem to stop. This to no avail.
So is anyone else running into issues such as this. Or, does anyone have any advice as to how I could remedy this issue. I know it is quite silly, but I love being able to use GIFs while texting people and hangouts doesn't support googles GIF keyboard for some reason.

This is a tough one. I've been there before but it was a while ago and I found the answer I believe on G+ but let's see if we can get you back on track here. Under settings->apps-hangouts what shows under SMS app? Click it and make sure at the bottom that sms app is showing Messages. Also in the Hangouts app itself go to settings and make sure SMS is disabled. Let's start there.

So yeah I have already done that. Messages will send the message, but the received message will come in through Hangouts. I am going to do a factory reset when I get home (the wifi at my office is terrible). I will see if that makes any difference. I hate to have to resort to that, but I wasn't having this issue prior to the most recent updates.
So I figured out the problem. I am on Project Fi. Within hangouts there is a setting in accounts that takes all calls and SMS through hangouts. Turned that off and now I am good.
FIrstly, Hello. I had an account here years ago but forgot the email/password I used(oh well).
I actually have various issues with this phone, but the most important one(at least being worked related) is this. I am able to send and receive individual text messages just fine with both the stock "messages" application as well as the "message +"(Verizon) application. I can also send out group messages just fine.... but I am not able to receive group messages from anyone I work with. All my co-workers have iPhones. I'm the only one with an Android phone.
I have tried clearing cache/data, force stopping, resetting network settings, rebooting, adjusting every setting possible in both messages & message+ applications(including disabling/re-enabling/updating). I went through the Verizon z2 force text message troubleshooting on their website and was even on the phone with Verizon for awhile. Finally, I put my SIM card back into my old Galaxy S6 phone and tested with that... still did not work.
I then tried using other 3rd party apps: Signal & Textra (neither one worked either)
I have heard that a "group text message" being sent from an iPhone only circulates on Apple servers(meaning that only people with an iPhone can get them).... however, one of my co-workers insists that he was able to get them on his old phone(Android... nexus something).
Basically, I know the problem is not this phone(right?...) That being the case, does anyone know of any way I can receive a group message originating from an iPhone without having to switch to an iPhone?
Any help is appreciated. Thank you
Update: I had a friend using an older iphone 5(iOS 10) attempt to send out a group text message. I was able to receive it. Upon doing further research, seems there's a bug in iOS 11 in which Android users are not getting group text messages.
So... it is Apple's fault this time. Additionally, I found that by using the app 'TextPlus' on my Z2 Force, I am able to receive these iOS11 group text messages. Looks like I'll have to stick with that until Apple fixes the issue.
Hi I am hoping someone might have some ideas of how to address my problem.
I am on a stock S9 on AT&T. I have had it for about 9 months...but about a month ago I started having a very problematic issue where I occasionally just dont receive a text message from someone. Its not always from the same person, and its sometimes in group texts but sometimes not. Its sporadic but often enough that its very problematic because I sometimes miss important messages without realizing.
I have been using Textra. At first I thought perhaps the problem is with Textra. But I logged in to MyAT&T portal and you can see there a log of all texts you have sent and received - the missing texts are never even showing as having been sent to me from the user.
I havent had much success figuring out what the issue is although after researching, I have noticed that some people think the culprit may be AT&T's "Advanced Messaging" function and they advise disabling it.
So I am now doing that to see if it works. The problem there though is it can only be disabled from within the stock Samsung Messages app, which I dont want to use. And if I go into that app to disable, and then switch to another Messaging app after, then every time I reboot, Advanced Messaging is on again.
If anyone has further advice on 1) understanding what the issue may be and 2) how I can permanently disable Advanced Messaging - I am desperate to receive it! Thank you.

You might have to adb push and remove advanced messaging from your system partition

I use the native Samsung Messages text app that came with the Fold 3 (can't use Google Messages even if I wanted to because it doesn't show a bunch of past texts from my previous phone that I need access to). For the past week or two, a few contacts who also use RCS Chat texting have the blue/green dots on the Contacts list in the app, but not on the Conversation list, and it won't send Chat texts, only SMS/MMS, to them. But, their texts often come to me as Chat texts. This app has no way to toggle Chat on/off to reset it, but neither Airplane Mode nor restarting my phone (including after the T-mobile update with the eSIM/dual-SIM additions) fixed the problem.
Is anyone else having this problem? Is there a way to fix it from my end? Or is it a Google server issue (it began with one of those times everyone's dot flashes off and then back on when you tap on them)? I know the person uses Google Messages because they don't have a Samsung phone (I think they have an LG). It is pretty important for one contact it isn’t working for to see if/when they read their texts. (Thankfully, for the other important one, theirs is working, and that's a Google Pixel phone.)
Anyone have an answer or also have this problem?
