Whenever I first install an app and it asks for permissions, the choices are "allow only while using the app", "ask everytime" or "deny". I'm curious if this means that even when the app is in the background that it can still be using the permission? For example if Facebook is running in the background is it using the location?
Is there a point to using Permission Ruler on OneUI 3?

I looked at my screen while it was plugged into the comp and noticed that there were 2 debugging icons at the top - one of them is debugging asking permission to access my gmail account. Why would it want to do that?
Check again. The symbol is used for more than debugging. Read the screen that comes up when you tap on it. It should tell you what specific app it is. Usually gallery 3d, Google voice or another Google based app.

didn't know I could tap on it without granting permission. when I go into it it says Gallery (this must be the new froyo gallery apk I loaded earlier today) wants to access my gmail account to access my picasa web albums, which I don't have set up on the phone.
Gunna set to deny - I don't use picasa anymore anyway. Thanks.
Yeah no problem. I can understand how that could be alarming until you understand how it works. That symbol is also used when an app fails to install.

What files would i need to remove to completly remove/disable the stock text messaging app? I found a vanilla one i like very much and i keep getting double texts in both. D:<

You can turn off notifications via going into the stock "text messaging" app through your apps list and then go into "messaging settings" and uncheck the "notifications - status bar" button.
Then you will only have your new text msg app notifying you.
It still shows up in the new messaging app.

You can delete it from /system/app via root-explorer or adb Or you can uninstall it using TitaniumBackup.
download the app rootuninstaller.
and then uninstall it.
I tried to use system app remover to remove messaging. I still get double texts in my vanilla message app.

last time i had this problem (double sms received). i re-flashed the rom.
btw, i wouldn't remove the stock messaging app through, i think the 3rd party sms apps actually use the system one for the actual work, they're more of a "front-end". just disable the notifications should be fine.
if you install another sms app and now actually receiving double sms (not just the notification), i think there's something else wrong...
Stock Note 2.. up to date..
for some reason I cannot find my email Icon. I just started a new job and we have to use exchange. I set up the email account via Sync accounts..
Now here is the kicker.. I cannot find the EMAIL icon in any grid to place it on my home screen. I looked into Settings... App Manger.. All and there is an icon there for it. .But for the life of me I cannot find it anywhere to add it to my home screen for easy access..
Anyone know how to magically make the icon reappear on my phone with out having to do a wipe?

I assume you are on the TW stock launcher? If so, try this: touch and hold empty space on home screen... select "Apps and widgets".... under Apps tab, select "Email". There's also an Email widget on the Widgets tab
The widget works.. but I am just looking for the email Icon.. I cannot find that little guy any where..
Is it hidden or disabled

Go to your app drawer then tap your menu soft key. The show hidden apps is at the bottom of the list.
There are no apps currently hidden... it never showed up in the app drawer this way. ..

If you can set up your email and you have a widget that works I sure do not see how you could have lost your email icon. Did you tuck it away in a folder? Post screen shots of all your app drawer pages if you do not mind.
Here you go.

That is weird. The only odd thing I noticed was that you have two gallery icons. The only thing that looks like email appears to be Microsoft's icon. Are you running any icon packs.
Everything is stock. ..no packs what so ever.

If you're rooted, go to /system/app folder and see if you have "SecEmail.apk" or "SecExchange.apk". If you do, you can try reinstalling the apks. If not, you need them. Easy to root if you're not.
Not rooted.... still can't figure it out. .. The icon does show up for ways to share attschments etc. ..

Install a file explorer that will allow you to get to /system/apps then tap on your SecEmail.apk, you will have to enable unknown sources, it should try to install the email apk. I do not know for sure if it will install or not and it may not even help. Reset your security setting for unknown sources if you want afterwards if you like. I have heard that some Samsung apks cannot be installed after initial boot.
It starts the install...but it does not complete it. I have astro by the way.

I'm noticing these processes run in the background and I'm wondering what they are:
"LIA S4URecommender"
"Font Server"
Also, is it safe to freeze these, and what do they normally do?
Don't know what lia s4urecommender does but font server is what lets you select a different system font in your settings. They are both safe to freeze

In settings then accessibility there's an option for 'app locker' under the services heading. Any idea what this does?
I just have talkback and switch access.

Seems it would be there from a third party app.
You'll have to hunt it down manually.
I have an app lock on kids' nexus 9 tablets, but I installed it and it allows me to lockout apps I don't want them to have access without me around.

I have talk back and switch access but also Nova launcher. I would say your app locker selection is from an app you installed.
