I have been through three separate Galaxy Nexus handsets and they all had issues.. mainly screen related!
1st handset - got it on launch day UK.. vertical grey lines on screen and volume bug.. exchanged it..
2nd handset - last week.. horizontal grey lines on screen and paint like blobs all over the screen in lower brightness levels.. exchanged it..
3rd handset - today.. horizontal white band across screen.. and vertical colour gradient down the screen.. returned!
I really like ICS and wanted to like the Galaxy Nexus.. I am really disapointed to have waited months for this phone to be let down by poor quality control..
I have decided I will not get another Galaxy Nexus (or Samsung phone - past experience)..
Eagerly waiting for HTC's interpretation of ICS.. meantime.. I sold my HTC Desire (big mistake)..

That's harsh but I've not noticed anything wrong with my handset - perhaps my eyes just don't notice these sorts of things (or I don't seem them as an issue). I'm sure I'd notice white lines though!
there is known issue with the display when its on low brightness. it goes away when its at high brightness.
if you can't live with that, i am sorry for you. you are missing out yet another pure google experience device.
It's hard to say w/o actually seeing them, but the "vertical grey lines" may have been perfectly normal. From what I've read, there's some level of streaking that normally occurs in these types of displays. On mine, when I have the brightness all the way down and am on a white screen, you can see something that might be described as "vertical grey lines."
A lot of Nexus Galaxy's I've seen have this screen anomaly, which is the vertical streak(s) going down the phone. This is only on white/gray backgrounds, as the screen is absolutely fine with other colors. The issue can be resolved by turning off the automatic brightness and manually adjusting the screen to at and/or above 30% brightness. Or you can flash one of the auto-brightness mods to turn up the default brightness.

My gray lines are horizontal and quite clear on a lighter grey screen.

From what I understand, it's an inherent characteristic of the type of display. If it bothers someone that much, buy a phone w/ a different display.
Hey guys I just saw this and thought I would Give my experience...
I myself got a Galaxy S2 a month back barely and noticed it has the same horizontal lines... about 2 horizontal ones and one diagonal one... along with some blotches... this is a manufacturing fault due to terrible quality control which has started after the super amoled plus screens and sadly and surprisingly seems to have carried on to the amoled HD ones too... never any such issues with the super amoled on the galaxy S including tthe one I owned...
Since it's a manufacturing defect the phone will be replaced generally but unfortunately in my region there is no official Samsung dealer for the S2, I had to live with my purchase...
Again as people have already mentioned you can only see them on the lowest brightness setting or if you are only looking at a dark screen... sometimes can see the lines on grey but depends on other surrounding colours...
I know I'm not happy about iit since it was so frikking expensive, but its still something which guess I can live with... doesn't really make the phone any less amazing...
Would have loved to try the nexus... but just couldn't get myself to go for the missing features...

feel your pain m8 , ive had like 4 sII returned for same kinda issues sensation xe that twice got dust under screen. And now well first phone transparant line annoying as hell second crazy colour banding like you never seen try searching "crazy colour banding" my third arrived with broken screen so awaiting 4th i love this phone but samsung qq is awfull. I can appreciate people say its down to the tech / characteristic but if thats the case why do the reviewers never get one of these handsets .... hmm wait probably becouse they got a cherry picked one.
Anyway if it is a characteristic they could at least put something in the docs they include with phone so the consumer is aware. Or raise the parameters of the screens they pass thru in manufacturing. I know its a different situation but its not like you would except a tv or laptop with these issues so why do we have to accept it with out phones which quite frankly these days can cost more then a laptop or tv.
you do know there are version of Samsung phones with sLCD instead of SAMOLED displays, eh?
if the display is your gripe, then just waint for the SLCD versions of the same phone
like the SGS2 for example or the next version of Galaxy Nexus i9253 with SLCD

I have a horizontal line on my screen. I might be able to post some photos of it later. Adjusting the brightness has no effect.
Sadly getting an exchange. Really enjoying the phone so far.

I have the gsm GN in US. I have also noticed that at lowest brightness level screen on my phone has a darker red/greyish tint from the top of screen towards the center. But I am not returning it. I have seen similar issues with my SGS2 that I exchanged. However my retired Captivate had a perfect screen. I guess it has to do with SAMOLED displays.

Your first phone had nothing wrong with it. The grey lines are part of the Super AMOLED display. Any Super AMOLED screen will behave that way, apparently. And it's really only apparent on low brightness. I turned mine off auto and set it to about halfway and it looks great now. Can't even notice it.
As for the volume bug, that's a software issue and was fixed with the latest OTA update...
Okay. so I have a few black blotches on my screen, but I can only see them on a certain kind of black, but here's how to tell if you have this issue go to phone click on the menu key than call settings now go to call rejections from in there look at your phone screen at all every angle possible, if you don't see black blotches than you don't have an issue like I do.

Looks like a manufacturing defect, the blotches are in the same place on everyone s phone.

I don't see them on that screen because the blacks are too black also I'm in a brighter lit room. But if I am watching a movie and it goes dark I can see minor blotches.
I noticed this and I took it to warrenty but they refused to replace or fix it. I dunno what to do. Is this breach of contract?

You would have to LIVE WITH THE STAINS AND BLOTCHES...
This is widely known issue known as OLED "mura" effect
It has stains and many black dots affecting the Galaxy S2, Note, S3, PS Vita and even some of the Galaxy S1 devices...
This is due to cheap manufacturing and QA ...

Is it this, or is it a limitation of the AMOLED manufacturing process? My blotches are very minimal and I very rarely ever see them. I would much rather have the contrast of the AMOLED tech with the blotches than have my S3 equipped with an LCD.

Definitely not an limitation of the manufacturing process.. My first-gen Samsung Captivate's screen blacks are actually deeper than the my Galaxy S3 with maximum brightness, displaying the same completely black #000000 screen in a completely dark bedroom at night...
Also what I have realized is that on my Captivate's screen, it do not has any of the stains or the dots on it when viewed in a dark room.. It has a little bit of "banding" problem on the top portion of the screen, but it is less noticeable than the stains and especially the "black dots" effect...
I have the EXACTLY same problem with my PS Vita similar to my Galaxy S3, but the PS Vita has much more stains than dots than the GS3 (more imperfection) although the PS Vita is lower resolution, and slightly bigger screen. The PS Vita uses the Samsung Super AMOLED Advanced (pentile matrix)...
Also, the screen production is not consistent on the GS3. My first GS3 has Wi-Fi random disconnection issues, so I exchanged it under the 15 days policy from Rogers, for another GS3.. The original GS3 has a lot of "black dots" (approx around 15 or so) and slightly stained on the top right corner.. The exchanged GS3 was slightly better and had no stain marks and only a few black dots and a slight pink spot (when viewed on white #FFFFFF).. Also I had to exchange my second one back to the store because my battery cover had some hairline cracks within a week of usage or so..
The THIRD AND FINAL GS3 I received did not have any stains, but suffered a more severe "black dot" effect (approx. 15-20 dots).. But my Wi-Fi issue was fine, and there are no pink spots, so I have been using it until now and did not really bother an exchange....
If you are extremely lucky, you might get a "perfect" or "near perfect" AMOLED in the current generation... But still the QA is going down the toilet when compared to my First Phone with Super AMOLED, my Samsung Wave S8500 (the screen was PERFECT on this one, NO stains/dots/smudges etc...)
Samsung is cutting costs and lowering QA because it is fulfilling more AMOLEDs for other manufacturers such as themselves (its is not just the top of the line Galaxy S# series using AMOLED, mid-end and some lower ends Galaxy series are using AMOLED as well) Also Samsung has to supply for Motorola, HTC (fewer models though), Sony (only for PS Vita), Fujitsu (for the Japanese Keitai smartphone from KDDI and Docomo) and so on.....
Now all this happened in quite short period of time, Japanese keitais with OLEDs came on the market last year... Samsung Wave came onto the market in 2010, there is only a 1 - 1.5 years in between here... The demand exponentially increased as smartphone sales went up, and more manufacturers are contracting Samsung to build OLEDs..
Personally, I do not think the process of making OLEDs have improved....
THE ONLY area it might have improved is probably the PRINTING... Printing higher resolutions has allowed Samsung to increase the pixel density and decreasing the subpixels (and this is probably why the Super AMOLED HD screens are dimmer than the original Super AMOLEDs at the same maximum brightness)
That is all I can say for now...
Live with the miniscule defects such as stains, dots, smudges etc on your OLEDs.... These problems are minor issues anyways since you have to be in a very dark environment with almost complete black #000000 image to be able to pick up the "defects".... Wait for a few more generations and allow the manufacturing process to improve more and still be able to fulfill Samsung's own demands and contracted demands for other manufacturers..... (Or other companies might finally bring more and more of their own technologies in OLED to the consumer masses)...

Mine has the defect but I only see it when in a very dark environment and only on a certain black type of screen. Normally the black screen that shows up when starting a Netflix video I will see it for a moment. It doesn't bother me that much but do agree that it looks like s***! Other than the blotches in a dark environment though, you'd never see it.
I also noticed these spots too. I do not think it is a big deal foudn a few threads talking about other phones and most people agree it is common and only effects the screen when theres nothing moving on it. In other words yes you will notice it but no your screen is not damaged.

after 4 returns of LG G Pads, all of which had screen issues (adhesive yellow lines, light bleeding, 7 light spots of doom at the bottom) I've decided to up my game and move to 10.1 as something futureproof and fun to own...
However most issues pop AFTER we get our hands on the tablet. As such, I would like to ask the owners. Hand over heart - what are the + and - and what are the most common issues (if any) reported with this tablet?

There were some early assembly issues (S Pen loose in silo, speaker grills uneven or loose, BT connectivity issues) that seem to have abated because after the wave of early builds they haven't been mentioned lately. If you're a lag-freak the N10.1-14 does suffer from the occasional transition stutter or milliseconds of lag opening and closing apps. I'd peg it as lag free 95% of the time. We're getting Magazine UX/4.4 soon and the Tab/Pro's shown on video from their CES launch looked much smoother than the N10.1-14. Do you have better than 20/20 vision? A couple of people who do (or apparently do) have noticed some display anomalies when looking at certain content; most likely because of the N10.1-14's RGBW PenTile display. I can't replicate it but have only mere mortal vision.
The top reasons to get the N10.1-14 are:
Display. I think it's gorgeous no matter what anyone else says and I compare it against my N3 everyday.
Form factor. Amazingly light, slim, and small for a 10" tablet.
Doing stuff. S Pen, S Note, Multi View, Action Memo, Scrap Book and the like are huge productivity benefits and once you start using them they are hard to live without. I'm on my second round of "Notes" with the N3 and N10.1-14 replacing my N2 and N10.1-12.
The top reasons not to buy it:
You're a pure consumption user. All of the extra features of the N10.1-14 use a lot of resources and if you're not going to use them will just be annoying. You pay a lot of money for the N10.1-14 because of those features (and premium h/w that's needed to power them) and to not use them will leave you frustrated.
You're a lag-freak. As it stands there's some stuttering, hesitation, and lag about 5% of the time. It's most prominent when there's a bunch of background processing going on. Some of the proprietary apps can throw up a spinning wheel while they're processing. For example you can move content between two apps open in Multi View. It's not always instant. You can also use Air Command to copy full screens of content from various sources to be saved in your Scrap Book. It too isn't instant.
You have super human vision or live-and-die by a "perfect" display. Some people here (a half dozen?) are really freaking out about some anomalies they've detected in the display. Interestingly, other than a single reviewer who actually has 20/15 vision mentioning he noticed "something different" about the display no one outside XDA has mentioned what some folks here have found/described. The difference between a RGB display and the N10.1-14's PenTile display is that because of an indirect sub-pixel arrangement, in certain situations like specific saturated colors on specific backgrounds, there can be detectable imperfections on certain content. I have owned (and loved) an S4 before it got stolen and I moved to my Z1.
I never had an issue with Samsung, but I do remember the occasional lag/stutter. I think it's to be used to.
The main reasons why I opted for the 10.1 are:
- The stylus + multi window. I do a lot of reading/writing and I often carry a paperbook around when I read a book to keep notes. But I am not the most tidy of persons, and I thought that operating a 10.1 in multiwindow instead would allow me to keep notes as I kindled through content.
- The specs appear future proof and XDA appears to have a good community for customing Samsungs. With cleanroms and what not, I am hoping to be able to keep the functionality of the Stylus along with a more lag free experience.
- Yes, I enjoy my movies and online magazine content, so the screen is important to me.
I will order one and hope to see it arrive by tomorrow. I can always return it within 7 days, but I doubt I will (Light bleed or faulty screens however are an immediate no go for me ! )
AS a 10.1 owner, do you think my reasons are valid? Thanks for your feedback

Up until a few days ago everyone here almost universally loved the display. A couple of people started ragging on it just recently. I wouldn't have even mentioned the display as anything but "outstanding" if not for those few people's recent comments. I've tried to replicate each of the scenarios they are bothered by and just can't. One of them admitted to 20/15 vision so s/he may be seeing imperfections I don't. People that have bought the N10.1-14 on my recommendation (with the display playing a large part) have been universally pleased.
As for lag and such my i7 gaming desktop with 12GB of RAM and 10K RPM drives lags occasionally. I shrug while others will blow away and rebuild Windows over it. To each their own.
Based on what you've described you'll be blown away by the N10.1-14's productivity features. But give them some time before drawing a conclusion. Being developed by Asian's for Western users the functionality isn't always intuitive or well presented. It is logical though and the more you use it the more comfortable you become with it.
I have a 3G version that I bought in the U.S. as an import and paid an un-Godly price for it. Almost twice the $389 some people that are complaining about certain aspects of the N10.1-14 paid during a recent refurb promotion that ran. I'm happy but it's hard to anticipate what makes others happy. After the past couple of days of pretty brutal discussion on lag and the display (which I don't personally agree with) I've learned not to project my expectations and what satisfies them on to others.
Based on your list I think you'll be happy though. And even happier when we get moved to 4.4/M-UX which is imminent because leaks have started to appear.

Just came home from pc world and saw the note...
It has yellow discoloration at the edges, and on the sides, visible on the whites..Just like the lg g pads i was forced to return...
I am terrified my unit tomorrow will suffer from the same. Can I be that unlucky?

I also do not notice the PenTile grid that some people keep pointing out on the Note 10.1 2014. I've seen the PenTile grid a couple times on my Galaxy S3 when fooling with the brightness and depending on the lighting, but I've yet to see it on my Note 10.1 2014.
As Barry has mentioned, there are a lot of different factors that could be an issue for some folks. If you have the brightness up, you're sitting under a bright light, you have better than average eye sight, there are many reasons you could see an anomaly or part of the device such as the PenTile grid.
Generally the picture is really crisp and clear unless I load a website that is using some low resolution images on the site. Those appear fuzzy and stand out compared to the crisp text.

No,no, I had a friend with me. We were both mocking Ipads and how they had a known yellow tint issue on left hand side.
Then I walked over to the note 10.1 2014 (mine is arriving tomorrow by delivery), and against whites there was an obvious yellow discoloration on the bottom right corner, as if from leftover adhesive or what not. I've not read ANYTHING like that for the notes, but I just finished returning the 4th lg g pad over it (if you go over to the lg g pad section of xda, under general and QA/Screen quality, you will see what I speak of..)
At this point all I can do is pray haha
Good luck with your note. I have had mine for a few months now and have yet to experience any sort of issues with the screen. Demo units at stores I think are more likely to have issues because of the amount of wear and abuse they get rom random people/kids fondling them.
So far this tablet is totally forgotten by Samsung.
I'm still at mj6 for 3 months, the tablet lags , the lock screen takes 3 secs to wake up and Samsung does not even care.
My advice stay away from note 10.1 2014.
Why care for a product that's already forgotten by the manufacturer?

I've hard of occasional lag but I doubt a 3-4 month old tab has been forgotten
Well here is my first review.
A beautiful tablet, but a bit on the heavy side. Unfortunately I am returning this one as well - severe light bleeding on the bottom and right side in landscape mode. at least 8-9 spots illuminating the screen.
I think God's telling me to drop the tablet idea altogether..
I might try once more with the note though, it really does look beautiful

This tablet is fast and smooth. I have noticed light bleed on all tablets that I have owned (nexus 7, nexus 7 2013, Asus Tranformer Ifinity TF-701, Samsung Note 10.1 2014.
I am happy with this new tablet, since some selfish bastard broke into my house and stole my TF-701. This tablet by far has the best resolution, and the best display of all I have owned. The light bleed is minimal compared to the nexus 7s.
Maybe I got a good one, or I have just gotten used to light bleed on larger formats.
I would recommend this tablet, as long as you are comfortable with Touchwiz, and Samsung's way of doing things.

It looks wonderful but mine had severe light bleeding, 6 distinct spots at left side, 4 at bottom, nothing symmetrical about them. Getting one from John lewis tomorrow hoping I will be lucky ☺

New unit light bleed as well. 5 spots at bottom (which i didn't really mind, small ones), big one at top though...
Let's see how the next one does. I'll be getting a note, for sure. But I want to get bang for my buck Thank God for John Lewis return service, so let's see...
P.S. Whomever stated that Ipad air is superior to this device is a moron like no other...
I just picked one up about 2 hours ago from Brandsmart. With the display at 100% on a black background it has 6 at the bottom. It looks like small spot lights shinning up. It's charging now but if I notice it with normal use I will return it. I also have the tab 3 10.1 I got for Xmas. It had a few bad spots so I swapped it out. Now I'm good to go. Some are just worse then others. Kind of like women

P.S., this is the second one., compared to my new N 7 2013. First was FAR worse. Seeing this comparison I think I'll pass on the excuse that lightbleeding is part of the LCD technology

Whatever note you get you will get light bleed, but don't see the problem if it isn't noticeable in normal use, I never sit in dark room with the brightness full with a black screen, do u?

It was visible watching a movie full brightness in a lit room, and very noticeable at 40% brightness in a dark room. For 450 pounds I definitely have a problem with it especially since my travelling budget device (199 pounds) out performs with same style of panel...

Mine is fine. At 100% brightness on a black background it shows a little on some angles but watching movies or viewing pics it's not bleeding into the screen.
Yeah yours looked bad.

Here's mine at 100%
Hi everyone. I had a really strange issue hit me today. All was going great these few months but suddenly today my screen seems washed out. Blacks don't seem to be black but light greyish. And playing YouTube videos such as the one attached look terrible like it is a heavily compressed JPEG with terrible color clipping. It used to play perfectly before this. You can see the color clipping around where the dark area meets some light in the 2nd image (sample.jpg).
Strangely enough, taking a screenshot, it is really how the video should look (Screenshot_20190721-230137-01.jpeg).
Just wondering if anyone had this issue before? Not sure if it was a recent software update. I'm still on December update on my end so perhaps it's one of the apps.
A reboot also did not seem to resolve the issue.

December? Update your phone first, preferably with a full image if you are unlocked. If that doesn't work, backup your data and do a FDR to rule out a hardware issue. If you end up calling Google for support this will be step number one, so you may as well get it over with. If you are not unlocked already, now would be a good time to do it. Unlocking will wipe the phone for you.

Just updated to the July update and it's still the same. The video looks terrible on my phone when compared to a Poco F1. Any chance I could trouble you guys to see if you are noticing the same banding/washed out colors on your phones as well?
Played some other videos and the same problem also occurs, especially when there's contrasty scenes. It's as though, my screen bit depth went down a little and it looks a bit like a heavily compressed JPEG when contrasty or backlit scenes appear
I looked at the same video in your OP and it looked fine. I am on Q beta 5.

Thanks fury683! I'm guessing it's probably a hardware issue of sorts. Even some of the default wallpapers are showing banding at times
Same issues are showing up on wallpapers and images as well. Those areas where there are transitions seem to be smudging and all like a low color depth display. Moved on to Q Beta 5 and the problem still remains. The issue seems to be how the screen handles dark/dim transitions.
Just wondering if anyone has any idea how to reset the screen parameters/calibration etc?

Any luck? I started facing this problem on Pixel 3a since a few days
Facing the exact same issue on my Pixel 3 XL. Were you able to find a solution?
Check your color choices under display settings. Try Boosted if it's not already selected. Maybe you had it on Boosted, and somehow it went back to Natural?

I've noticed that same issue on my 3xl. Looks really bad, both wallpaper and YouTube blocky and compressed.
I have faced the same issue on my pixel 3xl recently. Have contacted the google support. They don't seem to acknowledge that it's an issue that's been occurring frequently. Instead they tell me it's just for my phone. Can anyone bring it to notice of the concerned authorities. I wish this is an issue which has been since pixel 2xl. And they refuse to cover it since the phone is out of warranty
What did you provide them as evidence? Ive sent a few YouTube screenshots and my wallpaper on home screen as it has bad banding at the top. All darks are horribly blocky no matter what quality I have YouTube at
I have sent them pictures of night sky i have taken and other such pictures in instagram where the contrast is very much evident. I have given my phone to the repair service and they said its a case of display mura. But i cant imagine such issues in a phone within an year and half of purchase.
4 days ago, after 2 years using pixel 3 xl I have the same issue. My screen is washed out. I don't have black any more. It is unacceptable buy a phone that costed more then U$ 700 and after 2 years I have to replace it because of screen issue. My battery is perfect, my phone never dropped and everything is working except the screen. I will give up to buy Google's phones. The only one I never had problem was nexus 5, all rhe others nexus 6p, pixel xl and now pixel 3 xl I had basic problems that if I have bought a Samsung or other famous brand will never have it. It is really a shame!
I am having this issue too ! Crazy Google Pixel. No point of buying after discontinuing google photo unlimited storage. Another disappointing issue after buzzing sound for front camera.

I believe that detailing what you were doing when you noticed the change may help discover how this is happening.
For starters, this happened to me some time ago and it suddenly fixed itself. Granted, I had the washed screen for months probably and I can't recall how it solved itself, or maybe I solved it by doing something accidentally.
Anyway, this happened again today and now I'm back with the washed screen.
I was watching a YouTube video in full screen with the volume very high, phone was hooked to charger. After a while I quit the application and realized that my screen's colours were messed up again.
It's as if there's a white matte all over the screen affecting the overall accuracy of the colors. the screen's colours get worse the less brightness there is. And when playing videos, especially on YouTube, the darkest areas appear blocky as if the video used a very low compression rate. This blockiness effect is dissipated if I manually increase the screen brigthness, but this is not a practical solution because the colors are still wrong.
My device is rooted with Magisk.
Latest Android security update June 2021.
I use YouTube Vance in root mode, instead of vanilla YouTube.

The one showing this color distortion has a bit brighter or I can say more white screw than the other. One is working fine till now. Hi thr, new to pixel lineup. Got mine in a very cheap rate in marketplace like 200 usd. But now i can see the same issue. Also my top speaker is distorted in music playback like its broken or something. And most annoyingly a portion of the left side screen has low sensitivity where it misses the touches and scrolls. Which is very disturbing for typing experience. Please dont tell me to reset, coz i did it during the purchase. I am in the middle of a project and i dont have money for a new device, please help.
I have now had my phone for a little less than 3 days, and I've been happy with the speed it' blazingly much faster than my OnePlus 7T pro. It seems that I forgot my most important task when I buy a new phone: Test the screen quality on grey backgrounds.
One the 2nd day I noticed a faint white bar going through the middle of the screen while using spotify, so this morning I tested my trusty grey backgrounds, and one of them in particular had a nice/shocking result. One the left we see my OP7T with perfect color rendition, on the right the S20 FE that shows a brownish mess with lines going all over the place. I'm sorry for the bad quality cause this was taken on an aging Nokia 7 Plus and I couldn't make the picture sharp no matter what, but it gets the point across.
I did my research. I watched all tech youtubers of note reviews/comment on this phone and I thought since this phone is largely based off of the Galaxy A51 I thought they had the production figured out. But nope.
3 years ago this wouldn't have been as much of a problem, but since I use dark mode all over the place now, I just see these lines all the time, and once you see, you cannot unsee.
Multitouch issue. I have tested another one but same problem. Finally flagship with Snapdragon for EU. But sorry the phone is not complete.

I use dark mode and low brightness settings indoors, I've not encountered this banding. I know that if you video the screen on low brightness you can see the screen pulsing but that's not a use case I'm going to deal with.
