Hello. I just ordered a OnePlus one, and now I'm looking for the accessories.
I actually have a Note 2 with a tempered glass screen protector. The other day I've met a friend that works on the construction and he died me his Note 2 that he had been using since 6 months ago, and the screen was perfect, without a mark. He sweared that had the phone dropped several times and the screen was, as I said, perfect.
It made me think that maybe the OPO with a Corning Gorilla Glass 3, maybe it doesn't make much sense to use one of these screen protector.
What to you guys think?
Not necessary but if you want the extra protection go for it.
I personally don't use screen protectors but its ultimately up to you.
I don't usually run screen protectors but I'm glad I got one for my OPO.
After a few days of owning it I noticed some super light scratches on the bottom of the screen. This was during the brand new period of owning it and the screen had not touched anything except empty pants pocket, my fingers, and t-shirt for cleaning.
Thankfully my ozrly tempered glass protector showed up the next day, and I've been running that since. Pretty happy with it.
Tl;dr: I'd run a lot of phones naked, but not this one.
Precisely, as this is a cheap phone, and also has gorilla glass,I don't see the necessity as in a Note 3 or an iPhone...
as cheap as it is at $360, a $6 protector won't hurt your wallet

The phone is inexpensive but difficult to repair or replace. I see someone doesn't know the difference between the cost of something and how valuable something is.
I always keep my phone in a dedicated empty pocket but it always gets the random light scratch over its lifetime. A good $15-$25 glass screen keeps it looking new. That way when you pull out your device you don't look like some kind of a hobo.
The Ringke Fusion comes with a screen protector free of charge when you buy the case by the way.

All you need to scratch your screen is a grain of sand.
Are glass protectors mandatory? of corse not, otherwise they would come in the package with the phone. That said, i firmly beleave they are a "must have" for any phone, as you will regret not having one as soon as you get a scratch on it. for my xperia z2 it lasted 1 week 'till i regreted not having one, when for the first time I went "YOLO" on a phone.
You don't need a 30 dollar glass protector, I've had all kinds of brands and prices and all i have to say is that they are all the same, the only thing I insist on is rounded edges, so you don't feel it as much.
I'm on my second OPO, since I sold my first one after it fell face down, slightly tilted up, since it damaged the chrome ring on the top. When it fell, along with the dent, the glass screen protector was shattered on the top left. If you did not realize this so far, the only reason my "amazing gorilla glass" did not shatter aswell is that the protector took the hit for it (shattering to spread the energy). Gorilla glass is made to take scratches, not falls.
Finally, it is up to you. Do i think you do not need a normal plastic screen protector? well, you don't. Do you need a GLASS screen protector? after my experience my opinion can only be yes. I am currently waiting for a new one and have a crappy regular protector on.
Ultimate shield has proven to be a very good, not very expensive, and reliable seller for every phone I got it for (htc one m7, note 3, xperia z2, OPO)
Not absolutely necessary, but you really can scratch the phone screen.
Plastic screen protectors scratch really easy because they are plastic. So even if it protects the screen they end up looking like crap. That's where tempered glass protectors shine, it protects the screen and still looks really nice (albeit at a higher cost).
Tempered glass screen protector is never necessary until...well, until you drop the phone once on a wrong surface...

I never really believed in tempered glass, until I saw more videos on these types of ion-reinforced glass. They are definitely not indestructible. As somebody above stated, all it takes is a grain of sand for there to be a micro-scratch on the screen. It's from these nearly-invisible weaknesses that the screen will crack when exposed to force when dropped. I believe the reason is that Gorilla Glass 3 is around 6-7 on the Moh's hardness scale, which is harder than metal, which is why keys and knives don't scratch it, but not as hard as sand or rocks.
So in other words, some type of protector will prevent these micro-scratches. The question is then, plastic or tempered glass? I've always used plastic on the last dozen or so phones and tablets I've had, but even the best plastic one (Belkin) still definitely felt plastic in their friction, it wasn't as smooth as glass, and a year later, there are small scratches in it.
Yes, it's true that the OPO is cheap enough that if you smash it, it's not a huge deal, and yes, there was a screen replacement kit I saw in another thread that was $110 or something, BUT it's the time and hassle. For me, slapping on a $15 glass protector (which I found easier to apply than previous plastic protectors), is worth it.
With the OPO, I decided to try a Nilkin tempered glass protector, and it feels as smooth as the original glass, which is great if you're a power user that does alot of quick inputs. It also seems to be very resistant to scratches so far, but I don't believe it's the 9H that they stated in the ad. The downside is that it's definitely noticeably thick, you can see it from the side, and you can feel the edges next to the cutouts.
PS. I'm no expert, so take it as you will.
My screen scrathed its hairline but it did i now have a thin glass screen protector .25mm thick very thin and looks amazing $6 was shipped from china less then week

I own the iphone 5 and it too like all phones are prone to light surface scratches. Better put some protection on it
I had been using a Zagg glass protector from Best Buy these last few months and naturally I had a very pronounced "Halo" effect. My best friend also has a Note 4 and had been using a Zagg as well though with much, much less halo than I had which I just chalked up to Zagg quality, never thinking it could be the phone. Recently said friend switched to the Bodyguardz Pure+Crown protector that claims to not have a halo since the area that would normally be affected is covered by a black aluminum bezel that has a slight curve. It looked great and I promptly ordered one but upon installation it had about 1/8th inch halo effect. After emailing Bodyguardz and submitting pictures they said no problem and would mail a replacement out however if the problem persisted then it was likely the fault of my screen.
That last part about it being my phone's fault set off a light bulb. Initially when I bought my phone I purchased and exchanged 3 Otterbox defenders because the built in screen protector did not sit right on my phone at all. In the center it was fine but as you got closer to the edge of the screen the gap between the protector and the screen became so large that stylus usage was impossible. After the 3rd Otterbox exchange I just gave up, ripped the protector out and just added the Zagg for protection since impact protection was more important to me than being dust/water resistant. The problems with the Otterbox fit right in with the problems of the Pure Glass so now I'm wondering if it isn't my phone's screen being a bit more convex than it's supposed to be.
The big question is if it is the phone, does anyone have any advice how to go about proving the phone is defective? I can't see it going very well trying to exchange a phone that is 100% functional as long as I don't add any third party accessories.

My fingerprint reader has a nic on it that causes it to fail reading fingerprints. I didn't have time to try to get it replaced the few two months of owning the phone. Finally got around to trying, And they wouldn't take it. Claimed they couldn't prove it wasn't a user caused error. Nor could I prove it was there when I got the phone.
I've have my 2XL since October 21. I've had ZAGG glass curve on it since nearly day one. I've just cracked my third one. None of the times I've cracked it I've dropped it. Both times I've pulled it out of my pocked and noticed a chip in the middle on the side and it spiders out from there over the next few days. I've had glass protectors on my last couple of phones (S4, Moto X Pure) and never had issues with either of them cracking. Sure I replaced due to wear over time, but never because they broke.
I'm not sending Zagg another $10 for a new one. So I'm wondering how the factory glass holds up. Can I just go naked? Is it just the crappy edge only adhesive on the zagg curve? Looking for other peoples experiences and willing to listen to any advice others may have. I'm going to be pissed scratching up the factory screen and I really don't think I can go back to a "film" type protector.

I've had mine as long as you have. Screen still looks fine without any scratches that I can see. Granted, I take care of my phone, but I don't exactly baby it either. It's been dropped more than a few times, and wound up in my pocket with car keys, and still no bad scratches that I can see. I think if your an average user, and don't work in a construction zone, you'll be fine without a protector :good:

I'd say don't risk it I had my phone since January got Google's screen protector loved it finger prints and smudges where non existent until just a couple weeks ago when I also dropped my phone on the ground and it landed facedown on a rock only the screen protector broke
So I bought a zagg even though a few bad reviews all saying screen breaks too easy I have had this one for a week so far and accedently step on my phone trying to get into the shower did not break my screen so far I'm having no issues except smudges already on day one.

I have given up on screen protectors for this device.
The only ones that cover the entire device are made from plastic/rubber (aka liquid skin) lol. These make no sense, they offer no actual protection to the screen and they feel like crap and look just as bad on the device.
Than you have the tempered glass protectors. You have the option of partial screen coverage, which also ruins the aesthetics of the curved glass. Or you can get the "full coverage" option that claims to have "3d, curved glass". This is by far the worst option available. These manufactures of this garbage even go as far to list serious flaws of their design as selling points in their descriptions. The most glaring examples being, "with Dot Matrix" and "updated adhesive" This is so ridiculous, the "updated adhesive" is just horrible glue that they use on the top and bottom edges of the protector and the "dot matrix" is a full coverage of spaced out semi clear dots that are sold as being added for extra touch sensitivity, when in reality the dots are only added because the screen protector is not actually curved glass, it is flat glass connected to a top and bottom edge made of black plastic. The curved plastic edges are black for one, if they were actually glass that means they painted or tinted the top and bottom edges for no reason other than to have wasted money. And because there are 3 pieces to the protector, with the top and bottom responsible for adhering the protector to the screen, the "dot matrix" is needed because the middle piece is not actually mated to the screen. Any quality screen protector claiming to be tempered glass, does not need a dot matrix and is fully adhered to the screen with a clear silicone adhesive.
in conclusion, the pixel 2 xl has corning gorilla glass 5, this is the best glass currently available on the market. So being as none of the protectors available actually protect against cracked or broken displays, there is no need to waste your time with a screen protector. the only thing that the horrible protectors actually offer is scratch resistance, so unless you keep your phone in your pocket with coins all the time don't bother wasting your time or money on a screen protector.
Had mine without a screen protector since launch, and my screen has noticable scratches, etc.
Don't risk it. Whitestone is pricey $50. But feels like regular screen and removes the worry about damaging this great investment.

I've had mine since 10/24/2018 and no issues. I haven't ever used screen protectors. I tried on a phone several years ago but after like 3 attempts and still not being able to get it on without air bubbles I gave up. Although, I do have a bumper case that gives it a gap to protect from drops. Between that and the Gorilla Glass I've never had an issue. Plus, if I do have an issue I have the Pixel protect plan to take care of that.
How's your screen faring without a protection? I've had this phone for 7 months but recently removed the protective glass due to small cracks at the edges. And now I regret what I did because I have a deep scratch that probably came from headphone jack when i kept both in the same pocket. The scratch is visible even without reflecting any sunlight on the screen. I'm totally disappointed because I thought the phone had some sort of older gorilla glass cover, gsmarena stated it had an unspecified gorilla glass version but it turns out that the phone DOES NOT have it. Probably should have done better research before buying because even redmi note 5 has gorilla glass 3 (listed on Corning's official website)

Thats nuts, i dropped my phone when getting out of the car and it landed glass down and slid across the ground, i was gutted, but when i picked it up there was nothing on it. It sounds like the antiglare/fingerprint coating as been damaged, thats probably whats showing the as a scratch maybe? Found the best way is not to keep cleaning and rubbing on the screen, use my thumb or finger to clean it.
Mine is entirely scratch-free even after many months of use. Of course, cheaper large-ape-flavour glass may have less consistent quality of hardening. Perhaps yours came from a bad batch?

I haven't noticed since I have an OtterBox Defender case and Whitestone Dome tempered glass screen protector. Same with my wife's P6P.
I don't think it scratches any more than other phones. I use a flip case without screen protector. I do have 2 or 3 miniscule scratches that are only visible under certain angles or lighting conditions. I would say that it all depends on how you protect and treat your phone.
Sand scratches all glass. Use a case and a screen protector. My 2.5 yo N10+ has no scratches or damage in spite of more then a few drops because it's always in a case with a screen protector. The case should have slightly raised guards on all sides of the display to help prevent contact on face plants.
A good case lessens high G loading that can damage internal components like BGA chipsets during an impact.
I've never used a screen protector, since the beginning of smartphones (Dell Streak 5). I keep my phone in a slim case, and it goes into a padded belt clip case (turtleback brand). My phone is used constanly, and I've never scratched one. But, I also don't go to the beach, or other functions that would allow dirt/rock/debris to get to the screen.
I know accidents can happen, but I try to treat my phones as the EXPENSIVE things they are.

I live the desert. Just for giggles I finally took the screen protector off my old S4+, it felt good.
Within 4 months in spite off being careful it had a couple scratches. One grain of sand is all it takes... and sand is found everywhere.
Any pocket grit can mar glass.
Your dry fingers are also abrasive to glass and will gradually wear it down over time.
No screen protector, never used them. Day one purchase and no scratches. I don't think it scratches any easier than any other phone.
6 month old P6P here and it is scratch free.
Somehow, I got a scratch on my screen. It's a small ding and it doesn't bother me, but it's there. I don't use screen protectors, don't like them.
No screen protector but got a case since day 1 in October. No visible scratches.
I noticed micro scratches within the first week - so I am using a screen protection for the first time in my life.

And, factually, it is true that the Pixel 6 Pro scratches quite easily, compared to previous models.
Now, why is that?
The reason is the so-called Gorilla Glass Victus. It's a new product by Corning - a product that is in use in a number of phones, including IPhones. And that's where the interesting part comes in. All Gorilla Glass Victus phones are more prone to (micro) scratches.
Meaning that the Pixel 6 Pro does scratch more easily compared to previous models, but so does any other flagship with Victus glass, currently.
You might ask yourself: Why did Corning release a product that is prone to get scratched more easily? Well, the answer is quite simple: Drop protection. Gorilla Glass Victus is harder to scratch on a deeper level and is much more resistant to drop damage, at least in theory, according to Corning.
In the end, you will be best advised to get a screen protector on. The Pixel 6 Pro is a good phone. I can't call it great, since battery life and reception could both be much better, but you will have a hard time to find a package this good (awesome camera, many software features, timely updates, good root support (Samsung hates root), decent hardware quality, good hardware values on paper) somewhere else. The Pixel 6 Pro is a phone that I can recommend, but it's still a phone that can improve in a number of areas, but so does any other phone.
Considering that the P6a is on the horizon, and it's usually a much better bang for the buck, you might be best advised though, to hold out and wait for that phone (as far as I know, the P6a will be revealed in May).

Scratches at a level 6 with deeper grooves at a level 7 just like all other glass phones...

In my experience, yeah, it scratches really easily.
I've never used screen protectors before, and I baby my phones, but within the first two weeks I had multiple scratches on the screen to the point where I had to put on a screen protector just for my sanity. I'm seriously considering getting the screen replaced entirely because of it.

Same happened to me, I never used screen protectors in the past and I could go several months to a year with very minor scuffs. With the P6 I got a heavy scratch after 3 days.
If you're worried about scratches and want peace of mind just use a screen protector. Glass is glass and will always scratch under the right conditions no matter how much GG hypes it up.
I think the oleophobic coating could be better but scratches are not a problem for me. My release pixel was 4 months without a screen protector and it looked fine, same for my new device after 2 months.
Had mine since mid January, no screen protector...not one scratch. I use a turtleback case. I've never had a screen protector on any of my smartphones. Last phone I had with a protector, was one of those old PDA type phones.
My back glass is COVERED in scuffs and scratches. I'm glad I got the white model because you really do have to inspect it properly to see it
