Question about the impending doom of custom roms. I'm with T-Mobile and don't want to switch. So are texts included in this as well, or are only voice calls affected?

You are talking about this:
All U.S. V30/V3O+/V30S will need stock firmware, not LOS-based custom ROMs. When?
The first post is the most relevant. By page 3 the discussion had digressed into other areas.
At first, I thought only voice calls should be affected. (But... don't you need voice calls? Or do you have something like Google Voice? I have Google Voice but in the U.S. I still piggyback on my carrier's assigned phone number.)
(backstory, skip over this if you already know it)
4G LTE started out as "data only". Initially carriers had you temporarily dropping down to 3G (HSPA or CDMA) for voice calls until VoLTE (Voice Over LTE) was perfected.
But for V30 LOS custom ROMs -- which don't have VoLTE -- users still needed this temporary 3G access during phone calls. After the phone call is over, then you jump back to LTE (data only).
Now that 5G is being rolled out, U.S. carriers are killing off 3G to use those resources for 5G. AT&T is keeping 3G HSPA until February 2021, but initially it was reported Verizon and T-Mobile (Sprint) -- and their MVNOs -- are ending 3G in the next couple months. Verizon by January 1, 2020 and T-mobile allegedly in "January 2020" but they have set a specific day of the month that I've seen.
HOWEVER. HOWEVER...
T-Mobile may not be abruptly ending 3G HSPA in January 2021.
Instead T-Mobile says if your phone is not VoLTE capable by sometime in January 2021 it will be shut out of their network. This is not saying they are shutting down 3G HSPA in January 2021 -- just forcing all phones on T-mobile network to be VoLTE capable for WHEN they do shut down.
Hmmmm...
This potentially means you could still use custom ROMs a while longer if you somehow pass their VoLTE capable test? Because 3G HSPA may still be available for a while longer.
On the other hand if you do NOT pass their test, you can't use their network for texting either!

How to find out if your T-Mobile phone has VoLTE support
T-Mobile will shut out all incompatible devices next year (2021).
Check the Settings app
If your phone is already activated on T-Mobile, you can check in your phone's settings if VoLTE is being used. Open the Settings app on your phone and go to the 'About phone' menu, then tap on 'SIM Status'. If you can't find it, try pressing the search button in the app and typing SIM.
Once you find the SIM Status option, tap it, and a popup should appear. If the voice network type is listed as LTE, you're good to go.
If your Settings app doesn't have that menu for whatever reason, try dialing *#*#4636#*#* in your Phone app. This will take you to a hidden diagnostics menu. Select 'Phone information,' then check if LTE is listed under Voice Network Type.

Ok, I had read some of this before, but not all. My phone passes those VoLTE capable tests. So does that mean that my phone is capable, but still not using VoLTE because it's on a custom rom? But that since it's capable, I'll still be able to use 3g network until 2021? And that once I lose voice, I lose texting as well?

If your carrier completely switches to 4G network then you can't use even text messages without Volte
Though using Google messages with RCS may allow you to get and send text messages with internet connectivity.

My best guess, but I'm not T-Mobile:
If your phone passes those tests then it probably won't be locked out of the T-Mobile network in January 2021. If so, then you will still be able to use LOS custom ROM for voice calls, for as long as T-Mobile keeps 3G towers running.
When they do shut off 3G -- may happen gradually, not all at once -- you will not be able to make phone calls on custom ROM without VoLTE, but should still be able to text.
Texts are data, and data-only LTE signal should still allow texting.

Help improve Verizon compatibility

The OP3 does work on Verizon, however there are some "issues" that can probably be easily fixed by someone who knows what they're doing (aka not me).
So far I can confirm 1X/3G (eHRPD) works. I have to enable data roaming for data to work, but I can make/receive calls, sms, mms, and cellular data.
I've also been able to force a connection to LTE by placing the phone into "LTE Only mode". However, when I do this sms, mms and calls don't work (only data works).
For some reason the phone defaults to 3G rather than 4G even though it can use both.
3G/4G data, sms, mms and calling are working, they just aren't working together.
I have done a lot of testing on ,apns and build.prop edits but I have not made any progress.
My personal theory is that the phone is defaulting to a US Cellular APN which then attaches to Verizon's network as a roaming partner.
I really need some help from the community to get this thing working right. Any help would be much appreciated.
I just wanted chime in and say I'm also on VZW and considering picking up an OP3. From reading your other thread, as long as I have XLTE/Band 4, I should be able to at least get some use out of the phone, correct?
The idea of unlocking Band 13 sounds like a fun challenge I'm willing to try!
@notjaykay I tried to unlock b13 but the nvram would reset after boot. Here's the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=67648238
I haven't tried to get LTE working, but I've been using Verizon on my OP3 for a week now. Most of the time I use Verizon only for SMS, MMS, and calling, but on several occasions when I don't have T-Mobile LTE signal, I switch to Verizon SIM for data, too. I only get 3G in this case, but it does work pretty well (albeit slow, at 3G speeds). I'm also interested in somehow getting the phone to play nicely with Verizon's LTE.
What about "telephony.lteOnCdmaDevice=1"
In build. Prop

I just made this change but I don't get Verizon LTE signal at my house, so I'll have to wait until I'm at work tomorrow to actually test it.
That build.prop edit will not get you LTE. I suggest using this app https://goo.gl/620Kc7 and setting it to "LTE Only". You may have to toggle the "turn radio off" option. Be patient and it will work. What you will find is that when in LTE only mode you will only get LTE data. I do all my calls and SMS/MMS using my Google voice number so I don't need traditional voice/sms services. However this is the point of this thread. For some reason the op3 defaults to ehrpd (3G) rather than LTE. Until volte gets working (doubt that will be anytime soon) we will reply on CSFB (circuit switch fallback) for voice and text. Not ideal but a lot better than what we have now.
I did find this folder with a .mbn file in the OSS firmware folder which shows volte config specifically for Verizon (check the attached screenshot)
Thanks for the info, @cdkg. I wasn't optimistic about the build.prop change having an effect, but it was an easy enough thing to try just in case. Unfortunately, in my case, LTE-only is out of the question, at least for now. I'm leaning toward porting my number to T-Mobile to give them a real try for a couple months anyway. However, if this whole compatibility with Verizon <=> OP3 thing ever gets totally worked out, I'd probably come back to Verizon.

Question for AT&T LTE users

So I get LTE but as soon as I get on a call signal goes to H and I cant use data/apps while on the call. Am I using the wrong APN settings, or wrong radio maybe? Any settings help would be great, or if you can confirm also. Thanks.
Mine nexus 6 did same thing. I'm not sure that the data still work or not but everytime I on call I see LTE Icon change to H like you said
It's one of 2 things.
Either VoLTE is not turned on on your device
Or ATT does not support VoLTE in your area.
First one is fixable. Second one is not.

Then that would explain that I would think
LTE is data only, so when u go on a voice call it will got to hsdpa or 3g bc that is voice and data, so it is normal

Please don't spread information that's no longer the 100% truth. AT&T, Verizon, and (for a while now) T-Mobile offer calling over their LTE network, dubbed VoLTE (Voice over LTE). It allows voice packets to travel over the LTE network instead of legacy/3G and older networks.
The way the standard it set up, devices made more recently have software and hardware support for it, but as carriers have certification processes for their network, not all devices work cross-carrier. Most notably, iPhones (bleh) work cross-carrier because of the way their network configuration is provisioned (device identifies what network it's on, and downloads carrier configuration for that particular network). Some Android devices work cross-carrier (Nexus 6P and 5X), but the manufacturers of Android devices designing unlocked devices for some reason aren't certifying on AT&T, maybe because of cost or complexity.
Therefore, there are 3 main reasons VoLTE won't work on a device:
1) Not in a VoLTE area
2) VoLTE not enabled (this could encompass the option simply being disabled per the user)
3) VoLTE being restricted (AT&T restricting access because the device isn't certified, and/or the device not being capable)

You can't, only thing that would remotely make it work is if your imei was set up as a HDVoice supported phone in AT&T's system (s6, s7, note 5, note 7, iphone, etc). Though that likely won't work either since it'll try to provision the VoLTE and fail and yea.
AT&T does not use "Standard" VoLTE, so even if the phone supports it (like the OP3 does) and they were to allow the IMEI, it still wouldn't work. Phones have to have specific code from AT&T to do their HDVoice (according to their own customer service postings in their forums)

M8 does not receive calls on 4G, works when I switch it to 3G.

I have a HTC One M8, AT&T, TWRP recovery, flashed and rooted with ICE 8.2.2; SuperSu.
When I am connected to 4G/LTE and someone calls me, it rings on their end but my phone does nothing. I checked my IMEI and see LTE is supported. When I switch my mobile network from 2G/3G/4G (auto) to 2G/3G (auto), it connects (H, H+ icon) and my phone receives incoming phone calls. My SIM card does not mention "4G" or "LTE". I have yet to try the SIM in another phone yet but plan to tonight.
Just to help me out with my thought process on figuring out the issue I'm going to think out loud for a second:
Put my SIM in another phone and make sure 4G/LTE is on, check if it receives calls. If it works, the issue is my phone or ROM. If it doesn't work, SIM card is the issue.
Also, from what I understand, phones on 4G switch to 3G when a call comes in and my phone may not be doing that. Is there a fix for this?
EDIT: As additional info, I am able to make outgoing calls without issue on 4G.
Are you actually using AT&T as your cell provider?
Yes, and I made sure my APN settings are correct.
It's a known issue. AT&T's implementation of Voice over LTE (VoLTE) which they call "HD Voice" for some reason interferes with voice calls on custom ROMs on this device.
No real fix, aside from calling AT&T and asking them to turn off the HD Voice feature of your account. May need to ask for a 2nd Tier tech support to do it. Others here have posted they had to do that (and 1st Tier either had not clue what they were talking about, or wrongly claimed it can't be turned off).

Awesome. Thank you!
EDIT: Just finished working through the issue with an AT&T rep through online chat. Had me turn off my phone, disabled it on their end, and turned it back on. Did a test call and sure enough 4g switches to 3g as the call comes in and switches back afterwards. Problem Solved!

Not getting VoLTE on T-mobile on XT1710-06 version

Is or has anyone else been able to get VoLTE working on T-Mobile US on this model specifically? LTE and WiFi Calling work in general, but the "Enhanced 4G LTE Mode" toggle isn't there to allow VoLTE. The model has the same number of bands as the XT1710-01 model, but is on the RETLA channel, by the way.
Hi, actually I was having similar issues. VoLTE, seems to be different but is based on your Carrier mostly. If you call someone from a different carrier it may not be enabled. I'm with AT&T, whenever I call someone with AT&T and we are both with good 4g LTE, in the call, changes the status to HD. But, just with AT&T. At least that's how it Works for me. We should wait someone to confirm is this is how other carries behave.

Apologies for the late reply. Definitely no VoLTE or HD voice between me and other T-Mobile users. No matter what I tried it just never came up. If anyone's considering using this specific variant of the phone in the US, I'd be aware of the limits beforehand.

-06 is a North American dual sim variant, correct?
Are both SIM cards on t-mobile?
Could one use SIMS from different carriers?

-06 is a North American dual sim variant, correct. Updates should go through ATT Mex, I believe. And yes, you can use sims from other carriers. I used one sim card when I tried it and only utilized one of the sim slots as a result. T-Mo VoLTE just doesn't seem to have been certified for that variant.
So T-Mobile WIFI calling works on this variant of the Z2 Play? If so that is good to know especially when traveling overseas even if some other advanced features don't work.
I have an XT1710-06 retla device and I can confirm that wifi calling with T-mobile does *NOT* work on my device. There is a setting to enable wifi calling, but it never seems to connect and all calls still go over mobile. This is 100% testable if I for instance go into a deep basement that has wifi but no cellular signal -- I can browse the internet but cannot make phone calls or SMS, even though I have wifi calling turned on.
This is probably related to why VoLTE doesn't work either.
Also (as mentioned in another thread) still no updates for it past February 7.1.1 update. No later security updates and no Oreo updates.

Hi,
I'm super curious how did you get your Z2 Play to have VoLTE. I 've tried everything - new sim, IMEI of ATT branded phone, activated SIM on ATT phone, etc. , to no avail. I'm so frustrated and about to get another phone, because my HSPA signal is much weaker than LTE where I'm at and constantly have missed (straight to voicemail) or dropped calls. Please, let me know how did you get it to work.
Thanks
Maybe the problem is VolTE itself. As I tested. Unless both phones are with the same carrier and working good over 4G (good signal area) you can't get it working. At least in where I live that was true for a friend's phone and mine. So VolTE was good, until signal dropped hard. But impossible to work with other carriers.
Even it was good under Lineage OS and tested with Toxyc OS, but I saw the main thing is that 4G LTE should be firstly working fine. And same for anyone you call. Otherwise call will be normal. And for 4G LTE it depends on area support too.
Sorry for late reply

Same phone (XT1710-06 retla, rooted stock ROM on Oreo), and wifi calling on Tmobile also doesn't work for me. I can enable it in Settings, but I cannot send SMS or make calls over wifi with no cell service. After a while (a few hours) I get a Moto Settings notification that it can't enable Wifi calling, with a message underneath that says "Enabling." I can't dismiss the notification, only snooze it for up to 2 hours, and after I disable wifi calling it does eventually go away after a couple days.
Your problem is because none of the XT1710 variations have the 600MHz Band 71. It is the most recently added band and very few phones currently out there support it yet. As far as the HD voice issues mentioned...both people on the call have to be using a Volte supported phone and then HD automatically activates.

Question Problem to use Motorola Edge X30 in USA

Hello, first of all I want to say that my native language is Spanish and I am using the Google translator to write this, so there may be writing errors and apologize.
Buy a motorola edge x30 and the imported import from China. The phone is unlocked to be used with GSM networks from anywhere in the world. When I bought it, I was with Metro PCS but in Metro I was told that the phone was not compatible with the 3G networks of them. After that I started to investigate and find a web page called kimovil and there I saw that the edge x30 was compatible in the USA with all the networks of 3 suppliers: Cricket, AT & T and T-Mobile: I choose to use change to metro by T-Mobile.
Immediately I left the T-Mobile store after making the change I have tried and could receive and send SMS, receive and make calls, and get access to the Internet without any problem. After a couple of hours of having activated services with T-Mobile, the phone could not or receive more calls (the Internet and SMS continue to work normally, the problem is only with calls). When I try to call someone, the call is not done and says "Hanging Up". I tried everything: Factory Reset, Networks Reset, modify network configuration, everything ... and I can not solve the problem. I went to T-Mobile to tell you about my problem and they tell me that the problem is not them but my phone.
If anyone knows how to solve this problem, I would greatly appreciate the help because I feel frustrated. Thanks

Good afternoon. I already managed to use the Edge X30 with the T-Mobile network. You just had to put the network selector on automatic so that you can use 5G, LTE, 3G and 2G as you see fit. The problem is that I realized that the phone only calls and receives calls in 3G and 2G, which limits not only the quality of the calls but also limits your coverage to be able to make calls since you can only make them in 3G and 2G . You who also use T-Mobile, does the same thing happen to you?
I'm not sure, but it supports 5G in N1/N3/N5/N7/N8/N20/N28/N38/N41/N78 and 4G in B1/B2/B3/B4/B5/B7/B8/B12/B17/B34/B38/B39/B40/B41. or check volte settings.
you may try to install "carrier services" app by google from the play store. it solves some of my problem with data connection.

Yes I have the same issue. Whenever I make or receive voice calls, the phone falls back from LTE to 2G. I looked everywhere on the phone for 'VOLTE' settings but could not find it. Does VOLTE work for this phone on Tmobile? Very frustrating.
Has anyone been able to find the solution for the calls switching back to 2g? I love the phone but this is extremely annoying. I'm on T-mobile. Thank you
